Taking their place in December were the Mitsubishi Lancer, Dodge Dart, Subaru Impreza, and the tenth-ranked Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
The best-selling car in Canada in December was the year end winner, Honda's Civic. Not since February has any car other than the Civic ended a single month as Canada's most popular car. Not since 1997 has any car other than the Civic ended the year as Canada's best-selling car. (Year end rankings for 2012 are upcoming.)
Although it's been a rough year for Ford's midsize sedan, as one model was departing and another was slow in arriving, December 2012 likely is the starting point of something very good for Ford Canada. Fusion sales jumped 33% last month, and the Fusion only trailed the surging Honda Accord by 43 sales. Accord sales ended the year up 27% thanks to huge gains in the fourth quarter, gains like December's 179% year-over-year improvement.
The Hyundai Elantra posted typically strong sales results in December, but the Accent continued a worrying trend, as sales were cut in half and its ranking fell from 11th in November to 20th. The Accent ended December 2012 just 27 sales ahead of the Chevrolet Orlando; just 50 sales ahead of the Volkswagen Golf.
