November 2012 Top 5 Best-Selling Trucks In Canada

Now that we're six days into December, Ford Canada has surely sold its 100,000th F-Series pickup. Through the first eleven months Ford sold 99,331 F-Series trucks, 35,176 more than the second-ranked Ram's total.

Ram sales fell in November but are up substantially this year. GM will soon be replacing its trucks, and not surprisingly, sales are down despite hefty inventory and healthy incentives.

Canada's two best-selling trucks also happen to be Canada's two best-selling vehicles, and by a healthy measure. Canada's best-selling car, the Honda Civic, was shown with its 19 closest rivals earlier this evening. The Ford Escape, Canada's top-ranked SUV, was profiled with the 19 next-best-selling SUVs and crossovers just minutes ago.

November 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs In America

2013 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum Cayenne Red
America's 20 top-selling SUVs and crossovers accounted for 219,682 of America's 1.14 million new vehicle sales in November 2012. The Ford Escape trailed the leading Honda CR-V by 1363 units, but was the highest-selling of four American brand SUVs in the top five. Year-to-date, the CR-V's 15,042-unit lead over the Escape is not something that can be overcome in December, particularly if CR-V sales continue to rise and Escape sales continue to fall.

The chief newcomer on November 2012's list of the 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers in America is the Nissan Pathfinder. With 23% of its year-to-date sales coming in the eleventh month of the year, the Pathfinder nameplate owes much to the fourth-gen model that was recently introduced with more of a crossover angle.

The best Pathfinder sales year in the last decade was 2005, when 76,156 were sold. It seems unlikely that Nissan could sell 8000 Pathfinders each month now, but if it did, that 96,000 annual rate would have a hugely negative impact on the Murano, or at least one would think. Ford is doing a fine job of selling a big crossover-that-used-to-be-a-truck, the Explorer, alongside the smaller Edge and the better-selling Escape. Perhaps Nissan can do the same with the Pathfinder, smaller Murano, and better-selling Rogue.

All 265 Vehicles Ranked By U.S. November 2012 YTD Sales

12 different auto brands are represented in this month's top 20 list, although they hail from just eight different auto manufacturing entities. The Lexus RX was the only premium brand vehicle to crack the top 20, although you will soon be seeing in this month's luxury SUV sales post that Cadillac SRX sales shot up 13% to 5340 and BMW had a great month with the X5 and X3.

GoodCarBadCar makes all these sales figures readily available through the Sales Stats homepage where you can select any make, model, overarching manufacturer, or the total market. America's 20 best-selling cars have already been published along with brand-by-brand rankings and the country's five favourite trucks.

November 2012 Top 5 Best-Selling Trucks In America

Not exactly an eclectic bunch, America's five favourite pickup trucks. The order did change in November 2012. Usually the Toyota Tacoma and GMC Sierra are in opposite positions.

Ford sold more than 50K F-Series trucks for the fourth consecutive month in what was the F-Series' 16th consecutive month with a year-over-year sales increase. Ford hasn't sold this many F-Series' trucks since November 2005. And not surprisingly, Ford's press release was keen to point all this out. What they didn't say was that the F-Series outsold the GM twins by nearly 14,000 sales and is ahead on year-to-date terms by more than 70,000 units.

October 2012 Top 5 Best-Selling Trucks In Canada

2012 Ford Ranger red
Ford Canada's Ranger Volume Was Down
To 23 Units In October 2012
Canada's five top-selling pickup trucks accounted for 15.3% of all new vehicle sales in the country in October 2012. Sales of GM's twins plummeted. Individually, the better-selling GMC Sierra slid 32%; Chevrolet's Silverado fell 24%.

Ony 2.7% of the Tacomas sold were rear-wheel-drive. Tacoma 4x2 sales are down 38% this year. Sales of the 4x4 model are up 35%. The Tacoma outsold the Tundra by 494 units in October, but Toyota Canada is certainly not a small truck-based company. 38% of all Toyotas sold in Canada last month were small cars: Corolla, Matrix, Yaris, Prius C.

Ford is most assuredly a truck-based company, however. Four out of every ten Blue Oval vehicles sold in Canada in October was an F-Series. 32% of the Chrysler Group vehicles sold were Ram pickups.

As will always be the case in the future, historic brand and corporate totals (monthly and yearly going back to 2004) are now available through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, along with results for more than 260 currently sold vehicles. That's where you'll find out that Ford also sold 1126 Rangers in October of last year, to go along with 6950 F-Series pickups. This year, Ranger sales predictably dropped, all the way down to just 23 units. In other words, total Ford truck sales barely dropped even as Ford's total truck offerings were cut in half, in a manner of speaking.

Canada's total truck market will be fully analyzed in the coming days. For now, check out the five best sellers in the table below. Pertinent links are clickable at the bottom of this post.

October 2012 Top 5 Best-Selling Trucks In America

2013 Ford F-150 SuperCrew silver
An eclectic bunch they are not. In fact, this group of best-selling trucks is arranged in the exact same order as it was last month, and for most other months in recent history. So we won't dwell on it - GoodCarBadCar will publish a complete October 2012 pickup truck breakdown in a short while. There'll be much more detail on offer then.

Let it be said, however, that the GM twins came close to the Ford F-Series this month, ending October only 3190 units shy of America's best-selling vehicle line. Apart from the Silverado, America's best-selling trucks also managed to either match industry growth or exceed the average. That says something about how people feel about fuel prices.

These were the five best-selling pickup trucks in the United States in October 2012. Pertinent links are clickable at the bottom of this post. Best-selling car and SUV lists are upcoming.

September 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs In Canada

2013 Mazda CX-5 red
By no means are all twins identical. In the case of SUVs and crossovers competing for attention in Canada, many of the best sellers are at least siblings, if not fraternal twins. But identical? Not at all.

Consider the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento, Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage, and finally the Toyota Highlander and Lexus RX. Together, these eight utility vehicles accounted for 6.1% of Canada's new vehicle market in September 2012.

Yet in terms of volume, not one of those pairs measured up to the individual Ford Escape last month. Escape sales are down 6% this year but shot up 21% in September, even as the overall industry reported 6.4% growth. The Escape is now 6955 sales ahead of the Honda CR-V in the race to end 2012 as the best-selling SUV in Canada. Despite a productive September, last year's second-ranked Dodge Journey has slid to the third spot as sales have fallen 1% through nine months.

Many have asked lately about the well regarded Mazda CX-5's low volume. The CX-5 was America's 26th-best-selling utility vehicle in September as the class-leading Escape sold 5.2 times more often. In Canada, so dominant is the Escape that even as the CX-5 ended the month as the 13th-best-selling utility vehicle (obviously much better than the little Mazda fared south of the border), the Escape still sold 5.3 times more often than the CX-5.

Historical monthly and yearly sales results for 282 different vehicles can be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or, for non-mobile users, near the top right of this page. The U.S. version of this post was published eight days ago. Key best seller links are clickable at the bottom of this post, but first you ought to peruse September 2012's list of the 20 best-selling SUVs in Canada. Nine brands are represented in the top 10, eleven brands in the top 13.

September 2012 Top 5 Best-Selling Trucks In America

2013 Chevrolet Colorado family
GMC Will Also Sell A Version Of
This Chevrolet Colorado In
Order To Challenge Toyota's Tacoma
Every time an analyst makes a remark alluding to the inability of any non-Detroit full-size pickup truck to sell, the Toyota Tacoma is offended. Routinely America's fifth-best-selling truck, victor over ten other trucks, and July's fourth-best-selling truck, the Tacoma is actually a fairly popular vehicle.

More Tacomas left Toyota showrooms in September 2012 than the original Prius. The Tacoma outsold the whole Scion division. Toyota's Highlander sold less often; Toyota's RAV4 barely sold more often. Oh, and the Tundra? Obviously Toyota's big truck is not as popular as its small truck.

Indeed, Toyota's best-selling truck is a commonly seen pickup, one which will likely sell even better with the Ford Ranger gone.

That said, Ford sold more F-Series pickups in each week of September than Toyota sold in the whole month. America's most popular vehicle line also outsold the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra, combined, with 5016 units to spare.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all five of these trucks and every other pickup on sale can be accessed free of charge, all day long, through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home. Unless you're viewing the mobile version of this site, you can also make use of that dropdown menu at the top right of this page. GoodCarBadCar published longer lists of best-selling cars and SUVs earlier. Below you'll find America's 5 best-selling trucks from September 2012.
