Top 10 Best-Selling American SUVs In Canada - November 2010

It's right and proper that you would form two conclusions after looking through the list below of Canada's Top 10 Best-Selling American SUVs. First, the Detroit Three are selling a lot more of their most popular SUVs and crossovers this year than they did last. Average year-over-year gains in the month of November were 56.8% among the utility vehicles in the list below, a figure which you'll see is not all that exaggerated by the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee's huge jump - others are doing rather well, too.

Second, an awful lot of the vehicles in the group below aren't just best-selling as American vehicles but as overall vehicles, regardless of their national orientation. 60% of Canada's best-selling American utility vehicles were on November's overall best-selling SUVs list.

While you're considering interesting facts, consider the Canadian content of this list. The 2011 Ford Edge, 2011 Lincoln MKX, 2011 Chevrolet Equinox, and 2011 GMC Terrain are all built in southern Ontario. Many other big sellers are built in Canada, as well, a theme The Good Car Guy took up in this Sympatico Autos gallery.

Top 10 Best-Selling American SUVs In America - November 2010

Apart from a switcheroo between the Ford Escape and Chevrolet Equinox and the Buick Enclave vacating the spot now held by the Chevrolet Suburban, America's Top 10 Best-Selling American SUVs list is exactly the same as it was last month. Surprising it may be for its exactness, but really, if you had to guess which Detroit-based utility vehicles were going to fill the top ten, you just might name these ten over and over.

If there was going to be a battle General Motors wanted to win and could win, it'd be the Equinox beating up on the Escape for the first time in... ever? Strip away talk of dimensions, discounts, and retail vs. fleet sales and what you have is the Chevrolet Equinox selling 450 more times than the Ford Escape in November 2010 in their home market. The 2011 Chevrolet Equinox has a base price of $22,745.

Of course, true success is seen in the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. At this time last year, the Grand Cherokee was a forgettable SUV with strange headlights and poor sales. Now it's America's #3 American SUV for the second month in a row thanks to a sales jump of 256%.

Rank SUV/Crossover Status October 2010 % Change
#1 Chevrolet Equinox 15,387 +60.5
#2 Ford Escape 14,937 -1.4
#3 Jeep Grand Cherokee 10,984 +256
#4 Ford Edge 10,025 +55.2
#5 Chevrolet Traverse 9954 +41.1
#6 Jeep Wrangler 6552 +34
#7 Chevrolet Tahoe 6325 -3.1
#8 GMC Terrain 5902 +60.2
#9 GMC Acadia 5541 +42.9
#10 Chevrolet Suburban 4726 +1

Top 10 Best Selling American SUVs In Canada - October 2010

The same can't be said for of the purchasing of American body-on-frame SUVs in America, but Canadians aren't all that interested in acquiring traditional sport-utility vehicles... unless it's the Jeep Wrangler. The structures of every other SUV on the list below, Canada's Top 10 Best-Selling American SUVs in October 2010, are pretty much the same as you'll find on a car. In fact, these so-called SUVs (or crossovers, or CUVs, or cute-utes) generally operate in front-wheel drive. Canadians, quite clearly, don't care. Canada has made the Ford Escape one of the country's overall best-selling vehicles, not just among SUVs but trucks and cars, too.

There are heavy-duty improvements coming to the Dodge Journey, the kind of improvements that may see it leverage its tremendously low price to the #1 spot on this list. One never knows. The 2011 Dodge Journey will be available with a smoother 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine generating 283 horsepower, a 6-speed automatic, and a revamped interior. Dodge.ca lists the current Journey's base price at $18,745 - Americans are expected to pony up $2100 more. But if Chrysler has a story right now it most assuredly is not the 2011 Journey. No, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is on fire. Canadian Grand Cherokee sales are up 500% compared with October 2010; the 26.6% improvement on September 2010 ain't shabby, either.

Top 10 Best-Selling American SUVs In America - October 2010

Number three overall in the USA in October 2010, the Ford Escape still stands out as the most popular American utility vehicle in America. Larger, more traditional SUVs still form a surprisingly strong contingent among America's Top 10 Best-Selling American SUVs - vehicles like the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the $37,570 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe - but car-based softies like the Escape, Chevrolet Equinox, and GMC's Terrain make up the majority of U.S.-derived utility vehicles.

There's no denying the success of GM's Lambda platform quartet trio. The Saturn Outlook may be dead but the Good 12-winning Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia all out-sold the Ford Explorer and Ford Flex on an individual basis in October 2010. Combined, the Lambda platform trio's sales outweigh any SUV in America in October, even the Honda CR-V.

Rank SUV/Crossover Status October 2010 % Change
#1 Ford Escape 14,578 +16.9
#2 Chevrolet Equinox 12,721 +62.3
#3 Jeep Grand Cherokee 12,721 +291
#4 Ford Edge 10,185 +24.4
#5 Chevrolet Traverse 8255 -12.7

Top 10 Best-Selling American SUVs In Canada - September 2010

Four of Canada's best-selling American SUVs/crossovers are actually just about as Canadian as they are American. Although by GoodCarBadCar.net standards, all ten of the utility vehicles listed below are officially American, the Chevrolet Equinox; Ford Edge; GMC Terrain; and Lincoln MKX are all built in southern Ontario. Incidentally, the Dodge Journey is built in Toluca, Mexico.

By government standards, SUVs and most crossovers are part of the "light truck" category. Light trucks have made quite a comeback in 2010 in Canada, grabbing 53.9% of the market through the end of September compared with 48.1% in the same period of 2009. For that you can thank vehicles like the immensely popular Ford Escape. September 2010 sales of the Escape were up 75.9%. The introduction of the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee spiked Jeep sales in September. In fact, more than one quarter of all Grand Cherokee sales this year came in the month of September alone.

Canada's best-selling American SUVs are in the list below.

#10 - Jeep Liberty: 412
#9 - Lincoln MKX: 567
#8 - Jeep Wrangler: 602
#7 - GMC Terrain: 653
#6 - Jeep Patriot: 905
#5 - Jeep Grand Cherokee: 1039
#4 - Chevrolet Equinox: 1327
#3 - Ford Edge: 2176
#2 - Dodge Journey: 2327
#1 - Ford Escape: 3790

Top 10 Best-Selling American SUVs In America - Through September 2010

Impressive though the positive percentage changes in the list below may seem, take a look back and remember 2009. It was one of those periods which shortened the life of your average auto executive by approximately ten or fifteen years. In other words, automotive sales weren't shooting through the roof. All an SUV needed to do in 2010 to outshine the preceding year was, you know, sell at semi-normal levels.

It just so happens, however, that the Detroit Three are currently producing some of the world's best SUVs and crossovers. GM's three Lambda-platform CUVs from Buick, GMC, and Chevrolet are the class of the large pack. Rough and ready and pretty, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee just improved its year-to-date total by over 10,000 sales in September alone. And how 'bout that Jeep Wrangler? A recent mid-model freshening should help bring continued success for the 2011 Jeep Wrangler.

But it's actually an older model that's holding fast as America's favourite American utility vehicle. The Ford Escape hasn't had a full redesign since its.... first design. That was more than a decade ago. Facelifted and nipped and tucked and improved, the 2010 Ford Escape sells like hotcakes for two reasons: it was pretty decent to begin with; and the deals are super customer-friendly. It's hard to imagine anyone arguing against the statement that the new for 2010 Chevrolet Equinox isn't better than the Escape. That doesn't stop the Escape from being the better seller.
