U.S. SALES OF SMALL PICKUP TRUCKS (FEBRUARY 2010)

Toyota's turmoil, as The Good Car Guy has officially labelled it, hasn't stripped the Toyota Tacoma of its hold on the small pickup truck segment. The General Motors duo, when combined with the Dodge Dakota and the Ford Ranger, would still form a smaller chunk of the pie than the Toyota Tacoma.

Indeed, Toyota Tacoma sales were slightly up on an albeit terrible February/2008. While this February 2010 Sales Graph is just an added bonus for Sales Stats addicts, it's really here so we can have a proper understanding of the disintegrating nature of the small pickup truck segment. Ford F-Series sales in February nearly reached 33,000. The Chevrolet Silverado came close to 20,000. In other words, the Ford F-Series out-sold the whole small pickup truck category. So did the Chevrolet Silverado. Yowch.

MIDSIZE LUXURY CAR SALES - FEBRUARY 2010

Beginning in January, GoodCarBadCar.net bumped up our look at luxury car sales from the smaller, entry-level class to the core midsize models. While the BMW 3-Series dominates the smaller luxury category - and the luxury market as a whole - it's a Mercedes-Benz which stays strong in the class above. Don't forget about the new BMW 5-Series yet to arrive. Plus, Nissan's luxury division will likely see a surge with the new Infiniti M.

For now, as will be seen in the Graph below, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class sits atop the podium.

U.S. SALES OF SUPER SPORTY LUXURY SUVs (FEBRUARY 2010)

The Good Car Guy made a promise in early February: here are the results. A look at large mainstream sedans was basically a showcase of the Buick LaCrosse. The five vehicles in the Graph below are low volume sellers; vehicles which sell in varying levels of a rather high spectrum. Before you jump to declarations of the Infiniti FX35 and FX50's combined dominance, keep in mind the nature of its pricing. Sure, the Infiniti FX outperforms the Acura ZDX, but a direct comparison with the Porsche Cayenne is nonsense.

Still, it must be clear that for all the attention these vehicles are paid they're all relatively weak on the Marketplace. It's also worth noting that two vehicles which will forever disturb The Good Car Guy - Acura ZDX and BMW X6 - are particularly offensive to the collective consumer eye.

U.S. SALES OF SMALL SUVs - FEBRUARY 2010

Sales of the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, along with their luxury counterpart from Cadillac, have been remarkably strong since their respective debuts late last year. That makes sense, right? Brand new designs in a higher quality era for General Motors must result in significantly great volume.... right?

Yes, that is right, but it doesn't help explain the strong sales of the Ford Escape. The Escape has been facelifted, tinkered with, touched up, and marketed with low prices for a long time. Regardless, the Ford Escape is pretty much the same vehicle it always has been. With a little help from the Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute, the Ford Escape forms the largest pie slice in the Graph below.

TOP 10 BEST-SELLING CARS IN AMERICA (FEBRUARY 2010)

Before Honda gets too excited about the status of the Accord in the two most recent best-selling cars lists, it's worth paying attention to the sales pace. At this rate, there would be fewer Honda Accord sedans, coupes, and Crosstours sold in 2010 than there were in 2009. Thankfully, Honda Accord sales are doing better at this time of year than they were in '09 and the best car sales months are yet to come.
Nonetheless, Honda's true gratitude must be directed toward Toyota. The world's largest automaker lost about one-fifth of last February's Toyota Camry sales. That's not good. Toyota Corolla sales were steadier, but they weren't level. Indeed, "level" Toyota Corolla sales would've been bad enough. Remember how bad the economy was in early 2009? Toyota sales were down 40% in February of '08.

General Motors can be pleased as three models made it in to the Top 10: the Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Cobalt, and Chevrolet Impala. Keep in mind, the Honda Accord's total includes 2,432 Accord Crosstours.

TOP 10 BEST-SELLING LUXURY AUTO BRANDS IN AMERICA (FEBRUARY 2010)

Yes, Lexus sales were better last month than they were in February of 2009. The problem? Lexus sales in February of 2009 were way down from the 21,277 of February '08. In other words, Lexus' improvement in 2010 is an improvement on terrible totals. You could almost say that Lexus sales fell simply because the recovering economy should result in vastly improved Sales Stats. Because Lexus sales didn't grow appropriately (thank Toyota recall turmoil for that), BMW and Mercedes-Benz have been able to use their growth in sales to overcome Lexus' stronghold on the top of the luxury car sales podium.

BMW, more specifically, deserves praise. It is the German Ultimate Driving Machine builder which watched as sales of the BMW X3, BMW X5, and BMW X6 shoot through the roof; 72.7% higher than in the same period of last year. The one automaker not seen in the Top 10 below? That'd be Porsche. Sales at Porsche were basically level at 1,531. Porsche Boxster/Cayman sales tumbled. Porsche 911 sales took a fall. Obviously, the Porsche Panamera total (409) has no prior year with which to compare. Porsche Cayenne sales went from 444 to 599.

TOP 10 BEST-SELLING AUTO BRANDS IN AMERICA (FEBRUARY 2010)

As you may have heard over the course of the last few weeks, Japan's largest automaker has been struggling through recalls, quality concerns, and congressional hearings. For Toyota, this has inevitably led to difficulty in dealerships. While vehicles like the Toyota Corolla and Toyota Camry are still selling at a fairly healthy clip, the number of units pushed is not a healthy total for an automaker whose supply chain is set up for much higher figures.

With Toyota's turmoil comes a Ford festival. Sales of Blue Oval vehicles in America were up 46.3% in February. Registrations of Chevrolet cars, trucks, and SUVs were 32.4% higher than in February of 2009. Toyota was down 10.6%. Only the Toyota Venza (a Good 12 winner for 2010), Toyota 4Runner (a Good 12 Supersize winner for 2010), Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Prius enjoyed improved sales when compared with the same period a year ago, a period that wasn't the best for automakers to begin with. Improvements on a bad month are vital. Toyota couldn't manage it.

The Top 10 Best-Selling Auto Brands in America are listed in the Graph below. Dodge's Sales Stats total looks low, but remember the absence of certain vehicles which are now branded Ram. Add the two together and Dodge would move ahead of Hyundai with 44,185 sales.

CHEVROLET vs FORD : BOWTIE vs BLUE OVAL : FEBRUARY 2010 IN THE USofA

Although the most famous meeting of rivals in the recent past involves the red, white, and blue of the USA men's hockey squad and the red and white men's hockey team from Canada, one hugely consequential competition between the Blue Oval and the Bowtie takes place every month. In January, Chevrolet took care of business with an overall victory plus segment victories with the Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Traverse, and Chevrolet Cobalt. The Ford Fusion, Ford Mustang, Ford Flex, and Ford Focus all went back to Dearborn, Michigan, with their tails between their legs.

With Toyota's recall struggles and resultant sales losses, every other automaker was going to stand a chance to pick up some lost sales. Interestingly, Toyota's U.S. sales didn't tumble as much as expected. In Canada, Toyota fared better than in the poor economy of early 2009. Nevertheless, Ford made huge gains in February. As for Chevrolet, an impressive showing was seen there, too.

In the end, of the five categories seen in the Graph below, Ford won back a couple it had lost in January. There's plenty more Sales Stats yet to come from GoodCarBadCar.net in the next couple days so check back often.
