February 2013 Sporty Car Sales In America

53% of Scion USA volume this year has come from FR-S and tC. I envision a sports car/hot hatch brand, free from misguided tall hatches. It'll be the inexpensive Porsche alternative which, invariably, will eventually spawn a Cayenne-lite and quasi-Panamera shooting brake based on the Subaru Forester and the Legacy wagon that Subaru doesn't sell here any longer.

Some prophecies are certain to go unfulfilled.

February 2013 sales of the Dodge Challenger reached record levels. In the three-car American muscle family, 17,106 Camaros, Mustangs, and Challengers were sold in February. The Challenger ranked third in a class of three, this is true, but its share of that relatively large niche market rose to 28.7%, up from 20.5% in 2012 as a whole and 20.4% last February.

Of the 1051 little German roadsters and coupes sold in America in 2013 - by which mean Audi TTs, BMW Z4s, Mercedes-Benz SLKs, and Porsche Boxsters and Caymans - 37.2% were Boxsters. Indeed, the Boxster outsold the TT and Z4 (and Cayman, of course) combined. You can also frame the conversation this way: the Boxster and 911 accounted for 44.4% of Porsche USA sales in February - more than the Cayenne mustered - and 40.8% so far this year.

February 2013 U.S. premium sports car sales chart
Meanwhile, news out of VW HQ in Wolfsburg of the west, Herndon, Virginia, shows the GTI and R doing far less for the Volkswagen brand than they did a year ago. This is mostly the fault of the GTI reaching the end of its lifecycle. That said, sales of the Golf 2.5 and TDI rose 44% in February and are up 34% in the first two months of 2012. In February of last year, the GTI and R were responsible for 56.7% of total Golf family volume. That figure fell to 43% last month.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these vehicles can be accessed by clicking a model name in the sortable tables below or by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page. The tables below are now sortable, which should make it easier for you to see that Chevrolet sold more Camaros last month than Mitsubishi sold Eclipses.

Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we don't know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above. GoodCarBadCar is always open to hearing about the ways you would break down segments, so feel free to get in touch.

January 2013 Sporty Car Sales In America

2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Coupe Brown Rear View
In the middle of winter, Porsche USA sold more 911s than in any month since May of last year. In fact, that May total was just one unit higher than what Porsche managed in January 2013. Year-over-year, 911 sales jumped 29%. The 911 was the top-selling Porsche passenger car - 289 units ahead of the Panamera - and it was responsible for 26% of Porsche volume in January 2013.

Nearly 200 more 911s were sold in the United States last month than in the same period a year earlier. The arrival of the 991-gen Carrera 4 didn't hurt. Porsche also sold an extra 344 Boxsters this January than last. (A year ago, the previous-gen Boxster was dying off.) These gains, plus the Cayenne's 51% jump, were enough to cover up the Cayman's near-disappearance and the Panamera's 16% drop and enough to generate Porsche's highest-volume January in the company's history.

Compared with January 2012, the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, Nissan GT-R, and Porsche Boxster posted triple-digit gains. Gains of more than 40% were reported by the BMW Z4, Chevrolet Corvette, and Subaru Impreza WRX.

U.S. January 2013 premium sports car sales chartDeclines worse than 20% - in a market which grew 14%, you might recall - were posted by the Audi TT, BMW 1-Series, Infiniti non-sedan G37, Mini's Cooper Coupe, the Nissan 370Z, Volkswagen Eos, Volkswagen Golf GTI, Volvo C70, Audi R8, Jaguar XK, and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. Because of their low-volume nature, many of these models are prone to fluctuation.

December 2012 And 2012 Year End Sporty Car And Premium Sporty Car Sales In America

2013 Scion FR-S
2012 U.S. sports car sales chart
2012 Sporty Car Sales Chart
As COTY plaudits were being showered upon their new sports cars, Subaru and Scion were finishing up their eighth month of U.S. BRZ and FR-S sales. In total, 15,561 Toyobarus found American buyers in 2012 - the BRZ went on sale in May; the FR-S wasn't properly on the market until June. As expected, the Scion FR-S was the more popular car, but much of that comes down to supply. 73% of the U.S. allotment was sold through Scion stores.

22% of the Mini Coopers sold in America in 2012 weren't hatchbacks. Mini Convertible sales dropped 3%, but the Roadster added 2371 units to Mini's total. Speaking of hot hatches, Mini doesn't separate Cooper/Cooper S/Cooper JCW sales, (nor does Mazda isolate Speed3 sales, or Ford the Focus ST sales) but Volkswagen Of America does allow us to see what portion of Golf sales are generated by the GTI and R. 49% of Golf sales in 2012 were of the GTI or R variety, although The Good 12-winning GTI sales slid 3.3%.

Even now that Porsche Boxster sales are healthier than they've been since 2008, the Boxster isn't selling as often as the Mercedes-Benz SLK, the dominant German roadster. Year-over-year, Boxster sales jumped 887% in December 2012, yet the SLK (up 67.3%) outsold the Porsche by 70 units. BMW's Z4 was 51 units back of the Porsche and the Audi TT was 129 sales behind the Z4.

How important are these roadsters and two-seat coupes to the German brands? They're huge image builders, but measured in terms of volume, the Audi A5 outsold the TT, Z4, SLK, Boxster, and Cayman in December, and did so with 223 units to spare. Year-to-date, the A5 outsold the smaller quintet by 4342 sales. We'll start hearing more about BMW 3-Series coupe and convertible sales in 2013 when they take on the 4-Series name. Mercedes-Benz will still be hiding C-Class Coupe sales in the overall C's total. 21.7% of the Infiniti Gs sold in America in 2012 were G37 coupes or convertibles.

At the higher end, sales of the Audi R8, Jaguar XK, Mercedes-Benz CL-Class, and Nissan GT-R were in noticeable decline in 2012. You'll notice that the BMW's 6-Series huge increases continue, but keep in mind, the Gran Sedan Coupe is adding to the 6er's total. Not surprisingly, Porsche 911 sales rose sharply in 2012, and both it and the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class are selling better than they have since 2008.

As for American muscle cars, the Ford Mustang made a late surge, but the Chevrolet Camaro hung on to take the sales crown in 2012 despite falling sales. U.S. Mustang volume was up 9.5% in December and 17.8% in 2012 as a whole. There's no denying it: when many American buyers begin their search for a fast two-door, they already know that search will end with them leaving a dealer in a Challenger, Mustang, or Camaro.

You can always find the sales figures for any vehicle by selecting a make and/or model at GCBC's Sales Stats home. Click the headings at the far left to sort back to alphabetical order. It's a small change, but one that makes the surveying of automotive sales data that much easier at GoodCarBadCar.net.
