January 2013 Luxury Car Sales In Canada

2013 Cadillac ATS crystal red
The newest Cadillac accounted for 47.5% of the brand's passenger car sales in January 2013. For the ATS to accomplish that feat, CTS sales basically had to decrease. And decrease they have. Sales of the CTS sedan, coupe, and wagon (if there are in fact sales of the wagon) plunged 59% in January after sliding 53% in December 2012, 44% in November, and 15% in October.

But is the ATS wholly to blame? Canadian sales of the Cadillac CTS were in decline before the ATS even arrived, falling 34% in September, 39% in August, and 29% in July. GM Canada hasn't reported a year-over-year increase in Cadillac CTS sales since February of last year, when CTS sales rose 8.5%. It's easy to say the ATS is eating up potential CTS buyers in the United States. But north of the border - whether the ATS is cannibalizing or just doing its own thing - the CTS has been struggling for a while.

For every Cadillac CTS sold or leased in Canada in January 2013, BMW sold or leased nearly twelve 3-Series sedans, coupes, convertibles, or Tourings. Compare that with the CTS's results in its home market where, in a rough month for both the Caddy and the BMW, the 3-Series wasn't quite twice as popular.

These results aren't surprising to Canadians who follow GCBC's monthly brand rankings. Cadillac, Lincoln, and the not-quite-there Buick accounted for 2.9% of the U.S. market in January. BMW, Mercedes-Benz (sans Sprinter), and Audi collected 4.7% of total U.S. volume. In Canada, however, where the Germans do own less of a less luxury-oriented market, their 4.4% market share stands tall compared to the dreadful 1.4% market share of the American trio. You read that right: barely more than one out of every 100 automobiles sold in Canada in January was an American brand luxury car, and that includes Buick.

Thus, to see the CTS and ATS totalling just 163 Canadian sales while at the same time combining to outsell the 3-Series by 455 sales in the U.S. seems perfectly appropriate. Canadians simply don't hanker after high-priced American cars. Give us our Fords, Hyundais, and BMWs, thanks.

This luxury car sales post has been wholeheartedly changed. It now includes a number of cars GCBC displays with other segments, too, like the Chrysler 300 and Buick Verano. These additions allow readers to see how cars fare against similarly-priced nameplates, not just the cars that have a lofty brand image. The accompanying charts can be clicked for a larger view. Any model name can be clicked in order to find historical monthly and yearly sales figures. Or select a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats home. Best of all, the tables below are now sortable. Leading after six innings, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class appeared to be on its way to outselling the BMW 3-Series in Canada in 2012. But along came greater 3-Series availability in the final third of the year, and along came a routine sales victory for the BMW 3-Series, Canada's best-selling premium brand car. The 3-Series was also Canada's best-selling premium brand vehicle overall, and Canada's 41st-best-selling vehicle in 2012.

What BMW Canada didn't do much of with the 3-Series in 2012 was increase its share of the market. While Canadians registered 5.7% more new vehicles in 2012 than in 2011, 3-Series sales rose by only eight units. Mercedes-Benz C-Class volume, on the other hand, grew 12%. Sales of the Audi A4, which includes the new Allroad, jumped 12%, as well. Audi also posted measurable gains with the A3, A6, A7, and A8, as well as with the company's best-selling Q5 and the selling-better-than-ever Q7.

Combined, the Cadillac CTS and ATS sold 2346 times in Canada in 2012. The CTS found 3048 buyers in Canada in 2011. The Infiniti G ended 2012 as Canada's favourite Infiniti, but that's only because the JX35 has only been on sale since April: the three-row utility has been the better-selling Infiniti since then. The new Q50 should fix this trend.

2012 was the worst Lexus IS sales year since 2005, when only 861 were sold. 3.6% of the IS sedans sold in Canada in 2012 were 5.0L V8-engined F models.

Elsewhere at Lexus, the ES was clearly the dominant passenger car for the brand. Nearly 35% of all Lexus car sales stemmed from the ES - 329 of those 2535 sales came about as a result of the nameplate's new hybrid, the ES300h. Lexus sold 2879 hybrids in Canada in 2012. 26% of them were RX hybrids. (The Toyota brand sold 14,595 hybrids, up 250% from 4170 in 2011 with help from the introduction of the Prius C, a full year of Prius V sales, and a fully available second-generation Camry Hybrid.)

The Lexus ES's 34% increase was not enough to make it Canada's favourite midsize Japanese premium sedan. Acura TL sales improved by 94 units to 3323, 788 sales better than what Lexus managed with the ES. Infiniti hasn't managed to sell more than 1000 copies of its M sedan to Canadians since the first two full years in which it was on sale. M sales reached a three-year low in 2012.

November 2012 Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales And Midsize Luxury Car Sales In Canada

2011 Volvo S60 red front angle
Canadian Volvo S60 Sales Plunged In November But Are On The Rise This Year
BMW has sold 10,294 3-Series sedans, coupes, convertibles, and wagons in Canada in the first eleven months of 2012. Acura, Lexus, and Infiniti have sold 6287, 3186, and and 6773 passenger cars, respectively. This doesn't mean 6287 TLs or 3186 G37s or 6773 IS350s, this means Acura, Lexus, and Infiniti passenger cars in total.

Is this because the 3-Series is such a wild success? Well, it is. But this year, 3-Series sales in Canada are actually down 2%. Car sales at Acura are up 5%; Lexus car sales are up 21%. Infiniti car sales are down 15% even as the brand is up 17%. Thank the JX35, which accounted for 36% of Infiniti Canada volume in November 2012.

Nissan's premium Infiniti division has struggled to sell cars in Canada for the last couple of years. Sales of the G sedan, coupe, and convertible fell 18% to 3603 units in 2011. Infiniti M sales slid 35% to just 408 in 2011. This year, G25 and G37 sales are down 14%; M sales are down 23%.  The Infiniti G still outsells the the Acura ILX and TSX and every Lexus car variant. Infiniti's M doesn't really outsell much at all: it's Canada's 216th-best-selling vehicle and Infiniti's least popular model.

All this talk of Infiniti brings us to a new subject, that of nomenclature. Infiniti will be following a new naming process for new models and renaming all its current models. Basically, the G sedan will become the Q50, and the Q numbers rise by ten points from there. Unless it's an SUV or crossover, in which case it's a QX. Just keep a close watch on this image and you'll be fine.
