Canada Large Car Sales - February 2013

2014 Chevrolet Impala
Seven different cars sold more often in Canada than the whole of this large car group did in February 2013. Combined, these eight cars (nine if you count the dead Lucerne) found 1414 interested rental car agencies, government procurement officers, and 78-year-old individual buyers last month.

Sure, Toyota Avalon sales are booming, but only when compared with Toyota Avalon sales figures of yore. So far this year, Ford Taurus sales have basically doubled, but it's not the class leader through the first two months of 2013. Chrysler and Dodge have sold more 300s and Chargers.

From the Buick LaCrosse through to the soon-to-be-partially-replaced Chevrolet Impala, the 300, Charger, and the Nissan Maxima, large car sales in Canada are down, and they're down sharply.

So low is the volume achieved in the category, however, that one "big" month could turn it all around. These cars combined to account for just 1.4% of the overall new vehicle market in February 2013. Perspective? The Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes-Benz GLK combined to do so as well.

As we tirelessly point out, you can find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these vehicles by clicking their model name in the sortable table below or by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page. Feel free to offer suggestions on how the large car category should be broken down. Arrange the data in other ways by clicking column headers to rank cars by February or year-to-date volume, or however you like. And check out the more popular midsize cars in the post from earlier this morning.

February 2013 Large Car Sales In America

2013 Toyota Avalon red
Avalon Sales Are Up 58%
Over The Last Three Months
As Dodge Charger sales soared in February, sales of the Chrysler 300 travelled in the opposite direction. As Chevrolet Impala sales improved slightly, Buick LaCrosse volume fell sharply. The Ford Taurus and Toyota Avalon posted huge year-over-year improvements. Sales of non-Police Interceptor Taurus volume grew 17%. The police version of Ford's big car contributed 828 units.

The Avalon is certainly not the dull-looking sedan it's been in the past. Although no enthusiast is going to find it particularly exciting, the biggest Toyota sedan does feel like much more than a Camry XLE V6. And if a buyer doesn't want a conventional luxury car - like Lexus's ES, which sold 4817 times in February - the Avalon is a much more enticing prospect than it's ever been. Toyota has been marketing the car like crazy, too, even in Canada, where this type of car is exceedingly rare.

Many of these cars are perceived by some consumers to be outright luxury cars, and for this reason, some of them are displayed in GCBC's luxury car sales posts. The Chevrolet Impala, Dodge Charger, and Ford Taurus, with their sub-$27K base prices, are not.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these big cars can be found by clicking the model name in the table below. Or make a selection at GCBC's Sales Stats page. (Non-mobile users can select a make and model near the top right of this page, as well.) Two of these cars also appeared on the list of America's 20 best-selling cars in February.

January 2013 Large Car Sales In Canada

2013 Toyota Avalon XLE Touring Moulin Rouge
Of the 1245 sales represented in this large car sales post, 50% were Chrysler Canada products. Sales of both the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger tumbled, nevertheless. But every rival sold much less frequently in January 2013.

Nissan Maxima volume rose 17%. Ford Taurus sales shot up 71% in January. And Toyota nearly tripled Canadian sales of the Avalon. Combined, those three cars outsold the leading Dodge Charger by ten units.

Midsize cars, some of which are technically classified as large cars by the U.S. EPA, sell in far greater numbers than large cars in this country. Of course, small cars, some of which are classified as midsize cars by the EPA, sell in far, far greater numbers than midsize cars in Canada. The eight cars featured in this article accounted for just 1.3% of the overall new vehicle market in January.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these vehicles can be accessed by clicking the model names in the completely sortable table below or by making a selection at GCBC's Sales Stats page. Click the accompanying chart for a larger view.

January 2013 Large Car Sales In America

2013 Ford Taurus SHO Ruby Red
American law enforcement agencies acquired 704 new Ford Taurus Police Interceptors in January 2013. The PI accounted for 12.5% of Taurus sales in the United States last month. Without it, the Taurus trailed the Chrysler 300. With the Police Interceptor Sedan included, the Taurus outsold the 300 by 313 units. Non-PI Taurus sales rose 43%.

That figure was beat by the Hyundai Azera, sales of which rose from next-to-nothing to a still-paltry 797 units in January. The Hyundai Genesis, which has both coupe and sedan bodystyles, outsold the Azera 3.1-to-1 in January.

Big gains were also recorded by the Toyota Avalon, now in its fourth iteration. The Avalon continues to form a relatively small part of Toyota's U.S. volume. But while its January 2012 total equalled 3% of Toyota brand sales, the Avalon was responsible for 3.5% of the brand's January 2013 total, a total which rose 26% to 136,621 units.

Chrysler says it was the biggest seller of midsize cars in Canada in 2012, but that only rings true if Hyundai and Kia are considered completely separate entities. The Sonata and Optima, platform-sharing midsize sedans, outsold the 200 and Avenger by 7581 units in 2012.

If you think the Toyota Venza is more of a Camry wagon than a RAV4 crossover alternative, then Toyota was clearly the dominant midsize seller in Canada last year, beating Hyundai-Kia by more than 10,000 units.

Perhaps none of this matters; maybe you're only an observer of individual performances. In that case, surging Camry volume helped Toyota take over from the Ford Fusion as Canada's best-selling midsize car. More recently, in the fourth quarter of 2012, the Honda Accord has become the dominant player.

With a little help from a coupe bodystyle, the Accord nameplate took off with the ninth-generation variant's arrival. In December, for example, Canadian Accord volume jumped 179% in 2012.

Canada 2012 large car sales chart
2012 Large Car Sales Chart
Toyota car sales fell 16.4% in December, but jumped 25.5% in 2012 as a whole. The Avalon, Venza, and Yaris sedan posted respective decreases of 14%, 13%, and 21%. But the Camry wasn't the only car to post a huge improvement. Sales of the regular Prius more than doubled.

The Prius V contributed more to Toyota's overall volume than the conventional Prius. Between the Prius C and Prius Plug-In, Toyota found another 2593 more Prius sales that couldn't have existed last year.

The decline reported by Toyota's Avalon was a lot like the decline reported by the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala, Dodge Charger, and Nissan Maxima. Chrysler 300 volume jumped 89%, but that doesn't make this modern era a great time to sell big mainstream brand cars. Chrysler sold more than 10,000 300s as recently as 2007.

America's best-selling small car in 2012 was also the best-selling car overall in December 2012 and the fifth-ranked automobile out of the 266 different nameplates which were sold last year. Honda Civic sales jumped 44% in 2012 from a dreadful low in 2011. The Civic's chief rivals, in volume terms, were the Toyota Corolla (and its Matrix hatchback sibling), the Ford Focus, Chevrolet's Cruze, and the Hyundai Elantra. No other small car found more than 200,000 new owners in the twelve months of 2012.

U.S. December 2012 small car sales chart
December 2012 Small Car Sales Chart
Looking at December alone, the rankings were perfectly aligned with the year end results. Poor year-over-year results were reported by some of the least expensive small cars in the United States. Honda Fit sales fell 28%, the Hyundai Accent plunged 45%, Kia Soul sales dropped 25%, and sales of the Toyota Yaris slid 56%. On the flip side, the Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio, Mazda 2, Nissan Versa, and smart fortwo all posted measurable gains in December.

2012 Midsize Car Sales Chart
Moving up a category in size and/or price, America's third-best-selling vehicle was also the best-selling midsize car and best-selling car overall in 2012. Toyota Camry sales jumped 31% last year, topping 400,000 units for the first time since 2008. The Camry beat its nearest rival, Honda's Accord, by 73,014 sales. Even if you include the Crosstour in the Accord's total, as it once was, the Camry still ended 2012 52,166 sales in front. Disappointing 2012 finishes were posted by the Buick Regal, down 39% in 2012 and the Volkswagen CC, down 27%. Other midsize sedans which posted declines were either in replacement mode or defunct.

U.S. December 2012 midsize car sales chart
December 2012 Midsize Car Sales Chart
December midsize car results still had the Camry on top, but its lead over the Honda Accord was just 1979 units. The Camry beat the Accord by 15,839 sales in December 2011. American brand midsize cars took a hit in December, as the Buick Regal, Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, and Ford Fusion all recorded declining year-over-year volume. Together, the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima outsold all other individual models, including the Camry, something which didn't occur in the 2012 calendar year.

You can also find detailed December 2012 and 2012 year end sales figures for large cars near the bottom of this post. The Hyundai Azera certainly posted some of the most momentous year-over-year improvements, but that's mainly because it was rising from the ashes. The Azera remains a truly rare car. Toyota, however, finally got the Avalon kickstarted in December, posting a 60% increase compared with December 2011. Last month's 5171 Avalon sales total accounted for 18% of the nameplate's year end total.
