Canada Large Car Sales - February 2013

2014 Chevrolet Impala
Seven different cars sold more often in Canada than the whole of this large car group did in February 2013. Combined, these eight cars (nine if you count the dead Lucerne) found 1414 interested rental car agencies, government procurement officers, and 78-year-old individual buyers last month.

Sure, Toyota Avalon sales are booming, but only when compared with Toyota Avalon sales figures of yore. So far this year, Ford Taurus sales have basically doubled, but it's not the class leader through the first two months of 2013. Chrysler and Dodge have sold more 300s and Chargers.

From the Buick LaCrosse through to the soon-to-be-partially-replaced Chevrolet Impala, the 300, Charger, and the Nissan Maxima, large car sales in Canada are down, and they're down sharply.

So low is the volume achieved in the category, however, that one "big" month could turn it all around. These cars combined to account for just 1.4% of the overall new vehicle market in February 2013. Perspective? The Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes-Benz GLK combined to do so as well.

As we tirelessly point out, you can find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these vehicles by clicking their model name in the sortable table below or by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page. Feel free to offer suggestions on how the large car category should be broken down. Arrange the data in other ways by clicking column headers to rank cars by February or year-to-date volume, or however you like. And check out the more popular midsize cars in the post from earlier this morning.

January 2013 Large Car Sales In Canada

2013 Toyota Avalon XLE Touring Moulin Rouge
Of the 1245 sales represented in this large car sales post, 50% were Chrysler Canada products. Sales of both the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger tumbled, nevertheless. But every rival sold much less frequently in January 2013.

Nissan Maxima volume rose 17%. Ford Taurus sales shot up 71% in January. And Toyota nearly tripled Canadian sales of the Avalon. Combined, those three cars outsold the leading Dodge Charger by ten units.

Midsize cars, some of which are technically classified as large cars by the U.S. EPA, sell in far greater numbers than large cars in this country. Of course, small cars, some of which are classified as midsize cars by the EPA, sell in far, far greater numbers than midsize cars in Canada. The eight cars featured in this article accounted for just 1.3% of the overall new vehicle market in January.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these vehicles can be accessed by clicking the model names in the completely sortable table below or by making a selection at GCBC's Sales Stats page. Click the accompanying chart for a larger view.

Chrysler says it was the biggest seller of midsize cars in Canada in 2012, but that only rings true if Hyundai and Kia are considered completely separate entities. The Sonata and Optima, platform-sharing midsize sedans, outsold the 200 and Avenger by 7581 units in 2012.

If you think the Toyota Venza is more of a Camry wagon than a RAV4 crossover alternative, then Toyota was clearly the dominant midsize seller in Canada last year, beating Hyundai-Kia by more than 10,000 units.

Perhaps none of this matters; maybe you're only an observer of individual performances. In that case, surging Camry volume helped Toyota take over from the Ford Fusion as Canada's best-selling midsize car. More recently, in the fourth quarter of 2012, the Honda Accord has become the dominant player.

With a little help from a coupe bodystyle, the Accord nameplate took off with the ninth-generation variant's arrival. In December, for example, Canadian Accord volume jumped 179% in 2012.

Toyota car sales fell 16.4% in December, but jumped 25.5% in 2012 as a whole. The Avalon, Venza, and Yaris sedan posted respective decreases of 14%, 13%, and 21%. But the Camry wasn't the only car to post a huge improvement. Sales of the regular Prius more than doubled.

The Prius V contributed more to Toyota's overall volume than the conventional Prius. Between the Prius C and Prius Plug-In, Toyota found another 2593 more Prius sales that couldn't have existed last year.

The decline reported by Toyota's Avalon was a lot like the decline reported by the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala, Dodge Charger, and Nissan Maxima. Chrysler 300 volume jumped 89%, but that doesn't make this modern era a great time to sell big mainstream brand cars. Chrysler sold more than 10,000 300s as recently as 2007.

As always, you can find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for these cars and any other vehicle by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats home or by clicking the model name in the tables below. November 2012 Small, Midsize, And Large Car Sales In Canada

39% of all Buicks and 52% of the Buick passenger cars sold in Canada in the first eleven months of 2012 were Veranos. There's a Verano Turbo parked outside GCBC Towers this week, and its 250-horsepower engine and handsome exterior have impressed.

The extent to which Buick's smallest and least expensive car has taken over as the company's dominant product in Canada remains surprising, however. Sales of the stunning Regal are down 35%, and excluding the defunct Lucerne, it is by far the lowest volume Buick in North America. The Buick Regal is now Canada's 139th-best-selling vehicle; the Verano ranks 78th.

Canada November 2012 midsize car sales chart
Midsize Car Sales Chart
The Verano's dominance in Buick showrooms isn't enough to make it a competitor for high-volume mainstream compacts like GM's own Chevrolet Cruze, which sold more than five times for every single Verano sale in November 2012. Most of the inexpensive small cars the Verano outsold in November were niche cars like the Fiat 500, Toyota Prius C, and Chevrolet Spark. But the smallest Buick easily outsells the Acura ILX, Infiniti G, Acura TSX, and Lexus IS.

Buick has been selling Veranos in Canada for twelve months. By early 2013 we'll be able to see if Verano volume is rising or falling on a year-over-year basis. Speaking of which, huge year-over-year gains were posted in November by the Honda Fit, Kia Rio, Mitsubishi Lancer, Nissan Sentra, and Subaru Impreza. Among larger cars, Honda Accord sales shot up 240%, the Kia Optima continued its climb, and a clearout month for the Mazda 6 resulted in 767 sales.
2013 Mazda 6 sedan red
That was enough to make the Mazda 6 Canada's seventh-best-selling midsize sedan in November 2012, as it ranked higher than the Nissan Altima, Volkswagen Passat, and Chevrolet Malibu. If Mazda could post these sorts of figures with the new third-generation 2014 Mazda 6, all would be right in the world.
