100 FAVOURITE CARS - PART I

Over the course of the next ten days, The Good Car Guy will reveal the most subjective prose in the history of GoodCarBadCar.net. Divided into ten separate postings will be The Good Car Guy's 100 Favourite Cars. Current, old, or ancient, these 100 Favourite Cars won't be arranged in order of greatness for two reasons: alphabetizing is easy, decisions are hard.

These are not necessarily the 100 Best Cars - certainly not in my view. They won't be the 100 Most Beautiful or the 100 Most Fun To Drive. These are my 100 Favourite Cars. Each car is pictured and provided with one brief dictum. Will you disagree with The Good Car Guy's choices? I certainly hope so. If you were to heartily agree then we're clearly long lost twins and should really have gotten to know each other already. These cars are displayed in this setting because I love them; not because David E. Davis Jr loves them or because Csaba Csere loves them or because Barack Obama loves them or because they were "voted on by the public". Often times there's no specific reason. With some of my 100 Favourite Cars, the reasoning is almost definitely embarrassing.

But with more than two years of GoodCarBadCar.net under The Good Car Guy's belt, it's past time to make my subjectivities known. Behold, the first ten of my 100 Favourite Cars.

AC SHELBY COBRA: When immense power meets immense curves in a small package, everybody wins.
ACURA INTEGRA GS-R: What Honda blended perfectly in this small front-driver (steering feel, hi-po traction, a modicum of luxury) hasn't been found since.
ALFA ROMEO 147: Aren't hatchbacks supposed to be a lesser species? No detail was executed incorrectly on the 147, except perhaps the 147 GTA's dynamics.
ALFA ROMEO 156 SPORTWAGON: Hidden doorhandles speak volumes about the efforts undertaken by Alfa designers to make this the most beautiful station wagon of all time.
ALFA ROMEO 8C COMPETIZIONE: Alfa prices the 8C in the stratosphere for two reasons: carbon fiber... and the inherent knowledge that the 8C competes for the crown of most beautiful modern car.
ALFA ROMEO GIULIA SPRINT GTA: Simple sporting cars named Sprint which splurge on style are spectacular.
ARIEL ATOM: Though Caterham still sells variations of the Lotus 7, the Atom is the true modern return to bare bones sports cars; with the emphasis on "bare".
ARTEGA GT: While nowhere close to a household name, the GT's hips ensure we'll all remember the name Artega in 25 years.
ASTON MARTIN DB4: The DB4's sense of occassion ranks with that of the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Thankfully the DB4 also has a sense of class.
ASTON MARTIN DB7: In the most intense years of my automotive education, the DB7 was the most beautiful car available to mankind.

FUTURE EUROPEAN AUTO INDUSTRY

With news that Porsche has eventually succeeded in wresting victory from the jaws of defeat (otherwise known as the state of Lower Saxony), the future of the European automotive industry is.... confusing. In ultra-simplistic visual form, the images below show the Porsche group with Volkswagen and its underlings as well as a possible Fiat group, with the GM Europe additions and Chrysler LLC group, too.

FIAT WANTS MORE THAN CHRYSLER - GM EUROPE'S VAUXHALL, OPEL & SAAB TOO

Quick alert for early morning readers. It's becoming more than just rumour and innuendo. Fiat wants to grab hold of more than just Chrysler LLC. General Motors Europe-based brands are also now part of a future Fiat conglomerate. In other words, Fiat wants to become the GM of yesteryear.

Mergers and acquisitions like this would make Fiat gigantic. Brands under the umbrella would include, in one form or another: Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati, Ferrari, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Opel, Vauxhall, and Saab. Fiat is already big in commercial vehicles with names like Iveco likely meaning something to you. Fiat used to play around with Piaggio and Vespa scooters, too. Famed ski resort Sestriere is an Agnelli family stronghold. Various ventures nd tie-ups help Fiat make an indelliblible mark in wildly varying segments of the economy all over the world.

But a Fiat that includes brands like Saab and Chrysler? This'll be news worth watching. Catch the CNN story here.

GALLERY - ALFA ROMEO MITO GTA - 3 PHOTOS

Gran Turismo Alleggerito, better known as GTA, is to Alfa Romeo as AMG is to Mercedes-Benz or M to BMW. Performance versions of future General Motors products have been called into question with the disbanding of their high performance vehicle team in the midst of a company financial crisis. AMG and M, meanwhile, have never produced more high octane vehicles than they are right now. As an aspiring premium brand, Alfa Romeo needs to play that game, too.

Here then, is the Alfa Romeo MiTo in GTA clothing. Although still technically a concept, the technology behind this GTA's engine ought to assure it of production. From just a 1.7L engine, Alfa Romeo (under Fiat, and perhaps with Ferrari's help?) has found 240 horsepower. Direct injection and turbocharging have helped along with dual variable valve timing and "advanced electronic management systems". Enjoy the pics, this MiTo GTA, a potential Mini Cooper S JCW competitor, is spectacular.

ALFA ROMEO AND MASERATI MAKE AN APPEARANCE ON THE NHTSA RECALL LIST FOR INCORRECT TORQUE

For the first time in a long time, a brand new Alfa Romeo has appeared in the NHTSA (an American governmental organization, remember) Recall database. This is both a good sign and a bad omen. For one thing, it signifies that: yes, Alfa is back. Yeehaw. On the other hand, or perhaps the same hand, it also means that Alfa is back and is ready to be brought back into the garage.

Due to NHTSA's lack of true oil-in-the-veins car guys and gals, auto writers like The Good Car Guy are forced to make educated guesses. See, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published notice of this here Recall that includes, according to NHTSA, the Maserati Quattroportes from MY2005, the Maserati Quattroporte from MY2006-2008, the Maserati GranTurismo from '08, and the Maserati Alfa Romeo from 2008.

So that'd be the plurally named Maserati from '05 - didn't know they made the Quattroportes - and the Fiat-connected Maserati Alfa Romeo. Having analyzed this information, it is the belief of The Good Car Guy that NHTSA is referring to the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione that's sold through Maserati dealerships (Fiat owns/runs Maserati, Alfa, Lancia, and kind of Ferrari) and clearly imported by Maserati. Overall 7,912 cars are involved in the Recall.

What's the problem? "Incorrectly torqued upper and lower ball joint nuts may cause the ball joint nuts to loosen", which over time, "could lead to noise, vibration, and damage or separtion of the suspension arm." As NHTSA so capably points out, that increases the risk of a crash.

Wanna check this out with Maserati/Alfa Romeo? 1-201-826-2600. That's gotta be one of the first NHTSA-provided manufacturer phone numbers I've typed that doesn't appear to be toll free. If you're driving one of those cars, it sounds as though you can afford to make the call. By the way, the pic is of the Maserati Quattroporte from MY2008, not the Quattroportes from '05.

500 ALFA ROMEO 8C SPIDERS RIPE AND READY

Sadly, only thirteen photos are available. But what photos. Oh. My. Goodness.

For detailed information on Alfa Romeo's 8C project, check the Lowdown on the 8C Competizione. Decked out in wicked red paint, the 8C with a roof was nice. In all white, the 8C Spider - supercar convertibles not normally my cup of tea - is equally spectacular. Check out the gallery below for justification.

ADVERTISING IN evo

Don't be confused about what you'll read below. Take a look back at the so-called Strange Timing For Truck Advertising in Motor Trend in order to improve your comprehension. Now it's more than apparent to all of us that pickup truck advertising is nearly extinct in British car enthusiast magazines like evo. In an issue like 120 where evo delved heavily into eco, the timing would've been poor.

Nevertheless, having briefly covered the advertising scenario in Motor Trend's September issue, The Good Car Guy figures it's important to cover all bases. That makes this second base. Read on.

-----

2 - pages of advertising inside the cover for the Audi A6 Avant Le Mans Edition (A6's are available with V8s)

2 -  consecutive pages of advertising for the Volkswagen Passat CC

2 - consecutive pages of advertising for the Mercedes-Benz CLS (available with V8)

2 - consecutive pages of advertising for the Porsche using a picture of a '63 911

2 - consecutive pages of half-page advertising for the Saab 9-3 Turbo X

2 - consecutive pages of advertising for the Honda Civic Type R

2 - consecutive pages of advertising for the Lexus IS F (the only IS with a V8)

2 - consecutive pages of advertising for the Ford Kuga, the first vehicle even approaching an SUV/crossover inside evo's pages

2 - consecutive pages of advertising for the Vauxhall VXR8, a V8-engined Pontiac G8-alike

1 - page of advertising for the Prodrive-tuned Alfa Romeo Brera S alongside a 4-star review of the Alfa Romeo Brera S

1 - page of advertising on the back cover for the Seat diesel range

DEBUT - ALFA 8C SPIDER

To understand how GoodCarBadCar feels about the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, think on these things: it is #1 on the list of most beautiful cars for the company CEO; it was given a thorough rundown in a GCBC Lowdown; and there was even a profile of the new Alfa boss.

To understand how GoodCarBadCar feels about the new droptop version of the same car, read those articles and strip them all of a roof.  The Alfa Romeo 8C Spider inevitably engenders added appeal in SoCal, Miami, and Monte Carlo. It likely loses at least some of the driving appeal and certainly loses one of its best pieces of metal. Nonetheless, Italian automotive beauty doesn't stretch much further than this.

CAR with the 8c, 430 Scuderia & Maser GT to Monaco

CAR magazine, a less performance-oriented car mag than you'd wish it to be but still full of great features and opinion, had the privilege of driving an incredible selection of Italian V8 two-doors. One of the world's most beautiful - Alfa Romeo's 8c Competizione. One of the world's highest-performing production cars - Ferrari's 430 Scuderia. And, the least expensive way to find most of that beauty and plenty of that performance - Maserati's GranTurismo.

Ironically, three of Italy's great and historic brands are wrapped up under the Fiat Group, and all three of these cars share basic V8 architecture, with engine capacity varying between 4.2L in the Maser to 4.7L in the Alfa. The Ferrari's 4.3L is the highest-strung, and wound very tight indeed.

Enjoy the scenery.
