Canada Small SUV And Crossover Sales - February 2013

2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i Limited Red
During this period of anticipated Subaru Forester declines, Subaru's XV Crosstrek has been a huge help. The XV outsold the Forester by seven units in February and has found 86 more buyers through two months. Problem is, in helping out the Forester, the Crosstrek is eating up plenty of Impreza sales. The car from which the XV is derived has posted a 43% year-over-year decline in the first two months of 2013.

Mazda reported a 456% increase in Canadian CX-5 sales compared with February 2012, the first month in which it was on sale. But February was only the CX-5's eighth-best month so far. We'll know in a couple weeks what happened in March. Unless Mazda Canada sold 1649, there'll be some red font in its line. The CX-5 was Canada's tenth-ranked utility vehicle in February, ahead of the Ford Edge, among many others.

Two of the three worst declines in February were reported by Japanese automakers from opposite ends of the spectrum. Suzuki Grand Vitara volume fell 40%; Honda CR-V sales slid 44%. Meanwhile Hyundai found out that the new Santa Fe is plenty good enough to make buyers avoid the decent Tucson, and Tucson sales fell for the fourth consecutive month; this time in 40% fashion.

At the top of the heap, Ford Escape sales improved 2% and are up 13% through two months. Toyota RAV4 volume jumped 60% to 2371 units, just 44 sales back of the Escape.

You can always find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these SUVs and crossovers by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page - you can also click a model name in the sortable tables below. Feel absolutely free to make suggestions on the way GCBC breaks down the small SUV/CUV category. And don't forget that you can rearrange the order of utility vehicles below, ranking them by February or year-to-date volume, for example.

Canada Large Car Sales - February 2013

2014 Chevrolet Impala
Seven different cars sold more often in Canada than the whole of this large car group did in February 2013. Combined, these eight cars (nine if you count the dead Lucerne) found 1414 interested rental car agencies, government procurement officers, and 78-year-old individual buyers last month.

Sure, Toyota Avalon sales are booming, but only when compared with Toyota Avalon sales figures of yore. So far this year, Ford Taurus sales have basically doubled, but it's not the class leader through the first two months of 2013. Chrysler and Dodge have sold more 300s and Chargers.

From the Buick LaCrosse through to the soon-to-be-partially-replaced Chevrolet Impala, the 300, Charger, and the Nissan Maxima, large car sales in Canada are down, and they're down sharply.

So low is the volume achieved in the category, however, that one "big" month could turn it all around. These cars combined to account for just 1.4% of the overall new vehicle market in February 2013. Perspective? The Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes-Benz GLK combined to do so as well.

As we tirelessly point out, you can find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these vehicles by clicking their model name in the sortable table below or by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page. 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid venetian red pearl
The Ford C-Max outsold the Toyota Prius V by six units in Canada in February 2013. The Ford, which GoodCarBadCar reviewed a couple weeks ago, is now two sales ahead of the Prius V through two months. The V, remember, sells more frequently than the conventional Prius in Canada. Toyota Canada sold 176 Camry Hybrids in February; 352 this year.

Hybrids are doing more and more for manufacturers competing in Canada. Mainstream sedans obviously have a greater impact, volume-wise, than high-tech green cars like the Chevrolet Volt. The Malibu, which doesn't sell half as often as the class-leading Ford Fusion, sold eleven times more often than the Chevrolet Volt in February.

This isn't a mark on the Volt, nor does it say anything about the future impact of plug-in cars. But you come here to find out what has happened. And despite its intriguing electric capabilities, the Volt's high price means it hasn't been able to compete with normal sedans like the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, and Hyundai Sonata, top-selling midsize sedans which are or will soon be available in hybrid form.

Speaking of which, the class leader has built up quite a lead over its rivals early in 2013. Ford Fusion volume in Canada through February is 25% stronger than Hyundai Sonata volume.

2013 Volkswagen Jetta Tornado Red
Canada's seven best-selling cars accounted for 16% of the auto industry's February 2013 sales volume. Those seven top-selling cars were all, in a manner of speaking, small car rivals from the compact class.

Meanwhile, Canada's seven top-selling subcompact cars, many of which feature distinctly compact-like interior dimensions, were responsible for 5% of the new vehicle market's volume in February 2013. The most popular compact, Canada's first-ranked Hyundai Elantra, outsold the most popular subcompact, Hyundai's Accent, by a three to one margin.

Small cars of a wide variety, from the Fiat 500 to the Impreza-derived Subaru XV Crosstrek, put up fairly decent numbers in small-car-loving Canada, although Cinquecento volume has fallen in two consecutive months.

In other words, Canadians can choose between a huge number of different small cars and small car types. Yet with amazing frequency, Canadians choose to drive a fairly conventional car from Hyundai, Honda, Mazda, Toyota, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, or Ford, rather than a hybrid hatchback from Toyota or a retro-styled coupe from Mini or even an itty-bitty crossover from Nissan.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these small cars can be accessed by clicking a model name in the sortable tables below or by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page.
