2013's The Good 12 - Land Rover Range Rover - $80,000-$90,000

LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER
A November piece written by the unquestionably wise Jack Baruth for TTAC included mostly harsh words for the current state of Land Rover.

The Good 12 2013 logoBaruth shows this photo and explains it this way: "Putting that photo up where PEOPLE CAN SEE IT is approximately as stupid as me posing topless with “Marky Mark” Wahlberg and making sure every single mother in America between the ages of 22 and 35 gets a copy of the photo in her mailbox tomorrow."

He's right, of course.

GoodCarBadCar won't deny the appeal of a basic Range Rover. But these days, a basic Range Rover goes by a different name: Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, which is itself a Good 12 winner in the $25K-$30K bracket. At the high end, the still off-roadable L405 Range Rover is a real competitor for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series, and maybe even the Bentley Continental Flying Spur.

Like Baruth said at TTAC, the current Range Rover isn't what it used to be and isn't what it should be. That doesn't mean the fourth-generation Range Rover isn't spectacular. It's exceedingly powerful, particularly beautiful inside and out, full of Bridge of Weir leather that you won't find in lesser SUVs, equipped with a stereo that will have Jesse Cook's guitar giving you goosebumps the size of an Evoque, and roomy enough to make you consider hiring a chauffeur.

The new Rangie isn't the best Range Rover of all time, but it's almost certainly one of the best new vehicles you can buy today.

-----

Engines: 375 horsepower; 375 lb-ft of torque from a 5.0L V8 or 510 horsepower; 461 lb-ft of torque from a supercharged 5.0L V8

Base USD/CAD Price: $83,500 / est. $98,120

City Fuel Economy: est. 13-14 miles per gallon

It's Not Perfect: You've heard about Land Rover's infamous reliability ratings? While it's true that the least reliable vehicle in 2013 is at least as reliable as the most reliable vehicle from 1970, there are some factors you'll want to consider. When you buy (or probably lease) a new Range Rover, make sure an alarm is set on your iPhone for the day its warranty runs out. And trade that bad boy in. By the way, you won't get as much on trade as you'd hoped.

Sales Stats: In the U.S., Range Rover sales improved in four consecutive years through 2011. Canadian Range Rover sales have been mostly steady over the last decade. In the first eleven months of 2012, the Range Rover accounted for 17% of all U.S. and Canadian Land Rover sales. The new model will likely bring about an increase in that figure.

Viable Alternatives: At the high-end, the Mercedes-Benz G550, and at the low(er) end, the Toyota Land Cruiser.

October 2012 Top 10 Worst-Selling Vehicles In America

2013 Jaguar XF red
It's not hard to look at these lists of America's worst-selling vehicles and find perfectly worthy and unsurprising examples.

The Suzuki Equator doesn't sell well because it's a Suzuki, because Suzuki doesn't try to sell Equators, and because you could just buy the real Equator, which is a Nissan Frontier. Again, the Mitsubishi i MiEV doesn't sell well because it's a Mitsubishi, because it is all-electric and thus has the range of a well-trained Labrador Retriever, and because it looks like a crazy concept from a counterculture Japanese auto show.

But then there are cars which are simply punished by numbers. The current Porsche Cayman, for example, is no longer current. Cars.com says Porsche only has 17 Caymans in stock in the United States. (Compare that to Porsche's 559 units of Boxster inventory.) The Land Rover Range Rover is about to be replaced and, year-to-date, isn't selling that badly for an aging, soon-to-be-replaced SUV. Mercedes-Benz's $189,600-$198,400 SLS AMG actually sold significantly more often this October than last but, rather obviously, is not going to sell often at that price point.
2013 SLS AMG Mercedes-Benz
If Ferrari and Lamborghini rivals suffered from a proper sales release you'd see they don't sell often, either. And unlike the identical Scion FR-S, the Subaru BRZ unfortunately isn't sold in more heavily-trafficked Toyota showrooms and thus doesn't sell as frequently. But does that mean Subaru USA has been disappointed with the BRZ's 3120 sales in the last six months? Not at all.

As will always be the case in the future, historic brand and corporate totals (monthly and yearly going back to 2002) are now available through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, along with results for more than 260 currently sold vehicles. That's where you'll find out that Mercedes-Benz sold 13,717 SL-Class roadsters in 2002, when Americans bought millions more cars each year. Chevrolet Corvette volume won't be much stronger than that this year, a year in which M-B might not sell 5000 SLs and SLS AMGs combined.

Below you'll find America's worst-selling vehicles ranked three different ways. Find it in yourself not to be too negative. And if you just can't help it, check out the best sellers in order to get some positivity into your life.

United Kingdom Auto Sales By Brand - May 2012

2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Victoria Beckham
Brits registered 162,288 new vehicles in May 2012 according to the SMMT, a 7.9% increase over May 2011. The United Kingdom's new car market is up 2.6% through five months. Ford is very clearly the best-selling new car brand in the UK; Volkswagen is just as clearly the leading auto manufacturing conglomerate.

BMW sales increased in May, but not to the extent that Audi has been superseded as the UK's top-selling premium brand in 2012. Audi's lead over BMW did shrink to 4857 units by the end of May, however. Mercedes-Benz, the third-ranked premium automaker, is more than 17,000 units clear of fourth-ranked Land Rover.

Yes, that's Land Rover you see ahead of Honda. It's not abnormal in UK car sales to see Honda trailing the British SUV-maker. This is the third time in 2012 that it's happened, although Honda outsold Land Rover by nearly 13,000 units in 2011. It's not that any Honda machine lines up against a Land Rover SUV, but these rankings show the relative weakness of Honda in the United Kingdom, the strength of Land Rover in its home market, and the strength of Honda in the United States. For every Land Rover sold in America in May, Honda sold 35 vehicles.

While Land Rover, Suzuki, Chevrolet, Lexus, and Chrysler posted huge year-over-year percentage gains in May 2012, Subaru continues its slide out of the British new car market's collective consciousness. Subaru sold only 86 cars in the United Kingdom in May. Bentley and smart both sold more. Year-to-date, Subaru sales are down 22%.

Click the accompanying market share chart for a look at which automakers are truly dominant and which are truly niche-oriented. GoodCarBadCar will shortly publish a list of May 2012's ten best-selling cars in the UK. For the first time this year, a Ford isn't in top spot. In the table below you'll find detailed May 2012 sales figures. Brands are ranked by total volume.
