Top 10 Worst-Selling Cars In Canada - April 2012

2012 Nissan Sentra Red
Three mainstream sedans from three mainstream automakers reported some of the worst year-over-year sales declines in April 2012. Apart from the relatively high-volume Chevrolet Malibu, Nissan Sentra, and Mazda 6, none of the other big losers sold any more than 43 copies.

The you'll-never-see-one-anywhere-not-even-at-dealers Honda Insight plunged 83% from April 2011's 48 sales. But there are cars, vehicles which are still in production, which sold less frequently than the Insight last month. Lexus didn't sell a single LS600hL in April and only four LS460s. Acura sold three boring RL sedans. Porsche sold three Boxsters - it's hard to sell more than that when there aren't more to sell. There was one basic Boxster sold plus two more in Boxster S trim. There was one paying Lexus LFA customer. (The ANDC estimates that Ferrari sold 19 cars in total; Lamborghini another 11.)

Honda's Insight mixes it up with other unconventionally-powered cars in the second table below, the list which ranks mainstream brand automobiles by total volume. As rare as the Mitsubishi i and Nissan LEAF are on dealer lots in Canada, so too are the number of Canadians willing to purchase or lease an electric car. Chevrolet sold 76 Volts last month, by the way.

In April 2012, these were the 10 worst-selling cars in Canada, factored three different ways. Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for each of these vehicles can be accessed through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page. For positive news, check out the 30 best-selling vehicles in Canada.

Luxury Auto Brand Market Share In America - February 2012

2013 Jaguar XF Sportbrake cornering shot
BMW was America's best-selling premium brand in February 2012, thereby grabbing 18.2% of the premium brand market. Mercedes-Benz's 16.2% ranked second. Lexus, in third, owned 14.3% of all premium brand sales.

Compared with January,  BMW and Lexus were both up approximately two percentage points. Mercedes-Benz plunged five percentage points. Audi slid two percentage points from 9.3%. Acura, Cadillac, Infiniti, and Lincoln also made notable improvements. Jaguar/Land Rover fell from 4.2% to 3.7%.

Year-over-year, through the first two months, Jaguar sales are up 23%. To a measly 2007 units. And much though auto journalists and a handful of customers will absolutely worship the XF Sportbrake, it is not the car to send Jaguar surging to Porsche-like sales levels. Sales levels which, we must be clear, aren't particularly high.

Check out the February 2012 volume numbers for these brands and every mainstream and niche automaker at the U.S. Auto Sales By Brand post that was published yesterday afternoon. Overall market share figures for the massive U.S. market were published in a pie chart earlier this morning.

Large Luxury Car Sales And Large Luxury SUV Sales In America - January 2012

2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S Rear View
3739 large luxury cars were sold in the United States in January 2012. That's a 2.4% rise from January 2011's total, despite the fact that two-thirds of the nameplates in the category saw their volume shrink, and rather dramatically in three cases. America's overall new vehicle market rose 11% in January.

Most interesting are the drops reported by the Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ. Upon testing their most recent incarnations, many auto reviewers thought these were the cars with which Audi and Jaguar could finally break the Mercedes-Benz/BMW/Lexus juggernaut. It's early, only one month into 2012, just after the A8 and XJ reported 275% and 22% year-over-year gains in 2011, but the big Audi and chic Jaguar suffered alongside the Lexus LS in January. Mercedes-Benz S-Class sales dipped 2%, a scant 15-unit decline.

The Porsche Panamera's 16% jump was its first monthly year-over-year increase since May 2011. Meanwhile, BMW 7-Series sales were strong all fall, jumping 19% in December, 53% in November, 62% in October, and 11% in September. 31.3% of U.S. 7-Series sales in 2011 occurred in the final quarter.

After the jump you can find sales figures for the more popular large luxury SUV category. The Cadillac Escalade squeaked out a victory over the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, although it needed the ESV and EXT's help to do so. Combined, sales of the three Escalade bodystyles fell 28% in January - the regular wheelbase 'Slade was down 35%. Sales figures for these models and every other nameplate on sale can be found by accessing the dropdown menu at the top of this page or at GoodCarBadCar's Sales Stats home.

UK Auto Sales By Brand - January 2012

2012 Jaguar XJ Front Ang;e
In January 2012, Ford was once again the United Kingdom's leading automaker as Blue Oval sales rose 2% to 20,061, or 15.6% of all new vehicles sold in the UK. Volkswagen and its numerous brands led the way in terms of market share, reaching 20.8%, up from 19.3% in December. General Motors, by way of its core brand Vauxhall and its increasingly popular Chevrolet brand, sold 14,174 vehicles. That equates to 11% of the market, down from 13.8% in December. Ford market share, by the way, rose from 12.3% in December 2011.

Establishing which brands are premium and which are mainstream is more challenging than ever, but the challenge is even greater when examining UK sales. Still, based on accepted practices, Audi was the best-selling luxury vehicle manufacturer in overall volume as sales reached 8563 in January 2012, good enough for fourth overall. BMW, 2011's year end leader, fell 28% from January 2011 levels to 6249.

UK auto brand market share chart January 2012
Kia beat its parent company Hyundai by 216 sales. Land Rover out-sold Honda. Renault is quickly becoming a much smaller company in the United Kingdom as its range was recently cut in half. January sales fell 28% to 2802. UK sales at Renault's Japanese partner, Nissan, were 2.2 times stronger.

For all you once read about fancy WRX Subarus in UK car mags, the brand is now terribly weak on the other side of the Atlantic - Porsche sold nearly twice as many cars in January. Czech Republic-based Skoda was Volkswagen's leading value brand, beating Spain's Seat brand by 1288 sales.

As more evidence that Brits enjoy locally-produced efforts, consider that Jaguar sold 915 cars in the United Kingdom in January 2012. That's only 70 units down from what Jaguar achieved in the United States in January despite the fact that the U.S. market was 7.1 times the size. In other words, if Americans bought as many Jaguars as Brits did, Jaguar's U.S. sales total in January would have been closer to 6500 than 1000.

UK Auto Sales By Brand - October 2011

2011 Lotus Evora S Blue
Britain's new car market grew 2.6% in October 2011 despite the efforts of 25 brands to pull the market down. Apart from the disappearance of Cadillac, Daihatsu, and Dodge (which combined for 24 sales last October) no decline was worse than the year-over-year plunge reported by Lotus. Down 93%, from 61 sales to just four, Lotus's plans for the future aren't helping the brand now.

On the flip side, Ssangyong sales rose 290%, an increase which translated to only 29 extra sales this year. Lexus was up 82%. Land Rover sales shot up 63%. Hyundai improved at a 60% clip. Honda and Kia both posted 55% gains.

None of these brands compare with Ford, Vauxhall, and Volkswagen, at least not in terms of overall volume and outright popularity. Of the three, only Volkswagen has posted a ten-month improvement compared with 2010. Of the three, only Volkswagen failed to post a year-over-year improvement in October.

No luxury automaker competing in the United Kingdom sold more vehicles than BMW in October 2011. Though BMW sales were down and Audi sales were up, BMW's 1408-unit victory collapsed Audi's year-to-date lead down to 189 units.

Honda beat Hyundai and Toyota but the order is reversed if you consider all vehicles registered so far this year. Land Rover sold more than 2.6 times more vehicles than Mazda. And as you'll see in the market share chart below the rankings, Jaguar/Land Rover owned 2.8% of the overall UK new vehicle market in October.

There were nearly 135,000 new vehicles sold in the United Kingdom in October 2011. That means Brits bought one new car every time Americans bought 7.6 new cars. Britons have bought approximately 340,000 more new vehicles than Canadians have in the first ten months of 2011. Ford is the best-selling brand in the United States, the United Kingdom, and in Canada. 17.7 of Canada's new car market this year has been owned by the Ford Motor Company. Compare that with 13.8% in the UK and 16.8% in the U.S.

The United Kingdom's October 2011 auto sales output is chronicled below. Keep scrolling for a market share pie chart. Check out last month's UK Auto Sales By Brand post here.
