February 2013 Minivan Sales In Canada

2014 Kia Rondo cargo area
The Inner Sanctum Of Kia's Upcoming 2014 Rondo
Canadian minivan volume slid 17.4% in February 2013 as seven of the segment's ten members reported significant declines. The Honda Odyssey posted a 2.3% slide, equal to a 13-unit loss.

Through the first two months of 2013, Canada's minivan market is off 2012's pace by 12.7%. Much of this relates to the Dodge Grand Caravan, which has suffered both from a decline in desirability and some production issues in Windsor, Ontario. Keep in mind, the Grand Caravan is competing in an overall market that's slid 2.8%, but its 1576-unit loss isn't easy for Canadian Chrysler dealers.

Even if Canadian sales of the class-leading Grand Caravan - Canada's fourth-best-selling vehicle - weren't declining, Canada's minivan market would still be tainted by the drops at Volkswagen (not surprisingly, the Routan is dying off), Chevrolet, Kia, Mazda, Nissan, and Toyota, which is the second-biggest seller of minivans in Canada.

As always, historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these vans can be found by clicking a model name in the sortable table below or by making a selection at GCBC's Sales Stats page. That's where you'll find out that Mazda hasn't sold more than 1000 5s in a single month since May 2010.

February 2013 Minivan Sales In America

Mazda 5 Sales Are Surging, Relative
To Historical Mazda 5 Sales
While America's automobile industry collectively reported a 3.7% year-over-year increase in February 2013, the market for minivans shrunk 8.2%.

Of course, of the eight different minivan nameplates sold in the United States in February, two have or are in the process disappearing. If we exclude the Kia Sedona and Volkswagen Routan from the equation, America's minivan market still slid 4.9% in February. Minivans were responsible for just 3.4% of the industry's volume, down from 3.9% at this time last year.

There are three bits of good news on the minivan front, however. First, February wasn't nearly as bad as January. In the first month of 2013, minivans were responsible for just 2.8% of the industry's U.S. volume. Year-over-year minivan volume had slid 6.9%.

Meanwhile, in Mazda showrooms, the 5 is gradually making its way back. It seems doubtful that Mazda USA can continue with this 54% year-over-year increase, but if they do, 2013 will be the Mazda 5's best U.S. sales year ever, just nudging 2008, which still stands as the best of the eight years in which the Mazda 5 has been on the market.

And for Toyota, the declines reported by the Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Grand Caravan, and Honda Odyssey have paved the way for the Sienna to earn best seller status. Through two months, the Sienna has a narrow 1610-unit lead over the next-best-selling Grand Caravan, but that lead isn't as expansive as it was a month ago.

January 2013 Minivan Sales In Canada

2013 Chrysler Town & Country deep crystal red
Canadians registered 5694 new minivans in January 2013, 17.4% of which were less conventional Orlandos, Rondos, and Mazda 5s. The Dodge Grand Caravan owned 48.7% of the market. Combined with its twin from Chrysler, the Town & Country, the duo's market share fell to 59.6% from 60.5% a year ago.

As a whole, the minivan market fell 7.5% on a year-over-year basis, even as the overall new vehicle market slid 2.2%. Incidentally, after a strong 2012, the U.S. minivan market slid 6.9% last month.

Were it not for the Chrysler Town & Country's huge 429-unit increase, the market's slide would have been much worse. Sales of the top two-best-selling minivans, the Grand Caravan and Toyota Sienna, fell sharply.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these vehicles can be accessed by clicking the model name in the table below or by making a selection at GCBC's Sales Stats page. The table is now sortable - you can click any column header to sort and re-sort.

January 2013 Minivan Sales In America

2013 Toyota Sienna LE Salsa Red Pearl
With the near disappearance of Kia's Sedona and the severely declining sales of 2012's best-selling minivan, America's minivan market slid 6.9% in January 2013. It wasn't just the Grand Caravan. The Honda Odyssey, Kia Sedona, Nissan Quest, and Volkswagen Routan also reported year-over-year volume declines.

This made way for the Toyota Sienna to end the month as January's most popular minivan. The Swagger Wagon beat the Odyssey by more than 1000 units. And the most popular Chrysler minivan was, in fact, the Chrysler brand's minivan. Town & Country sales rose 16% compared with January 2012.

Nevertheless, while America's new vehicle market climbed 14% to 1.04 million units in January, the minivan market fell by 2192 sales to 29,493, equal to 2.8% of the overall market, down from 3.5% at this time last year.

You can click any model name in the table below to find historical monthly and yearly sales figures. The accompanying chart ranks models by January volume, something you can do by sorting the table below. Yes, it's sortable now; by any column.

December 2012 And 2012 Year End Minivan Sales In Canada

Canadians purchased or leased more new Honda Civics in December 2012 than minivans. The minivan category, as a whole, was let down by two of its three most popular models. Dodge Grand Caravan sales fell 15%; Honda Odyssey volume was cut in half.

At the bottom of the order, Canadians continued to prove they don't want the Nissan Quest. Only 0.5% of the minivans sold in Canada in December were Quests. 49.8% were Chrysler products built in Windsor, Ontario.

But that's just December. In the twelve months of 2012, Canadians acquired 97,547 minivans, a figure which includes the Chevrolet Orlando, Kia Rondo, and Mazda 5 but not the Ford Transit Connect or Ram Cargo Van. The Dodge Grand Caravan owned 52.8% of the Canadian minivan market in 2012. Chrysler owned 56.9%. Windsor-built vans accounted for 57.6% of Canada's minivan market. And the Nissan Quest wasn't Canada's worst-selling minivan in 2012 (except by year-over-year decline), as Volkswagen's Grand Caravan copy found just 617 buyers. The Routan accounted for 0.63% of the minivan market; the Quest another 0.68%.

Those three truly mini minivans? Rejected by GM's U.S. operations, the Chevrolet Orlando led the trio in Canada with 7199 sales, 883 units ahead of the Kia Rondo. Mazda 5 sales dropped 13% to 5267 in 2012. Other than its first year on sale in Canada, 2012 was the worst Mazda 5 sales year in Canada so far. Mazda Canada sold nearly 12,000 5s in 2008.

Despite the decline reported by Canada's best-selling minivan and Canada's fourth-best-selling vehicle overall, the overall minivan market was up 16.7% in 2012.

As always, you can find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for these minivans and any other vehicle by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats home or by clicking the model name in the table below. December 2012 And 2012 Year End Minivan Sales In America

2013 Dodge Grand Caravan grey roof carrier
2012 year end U.S. minivan sales chart
2012 Minivan Sales Chart
America's minivan market grew 12.9% to 554,827 units in 2012. This growth was slightly less than that which was achieved by the overall new vehicle market's 13.4% improvement, but nonetheless impressive for a vehicle category that's taken its fair share of criticism, even historical signs of demise.

December results weren't so favourable. Five of the eight minivans available for sale posted declines, some of which were serious. Sales of the Honda Odyssey, America's second-best-selling minivan in 2012, suffered a 21% year-over-year decline in December. Sales of the Nissan Quest were 50% stronger in 2012 than in 2011, but Quest sales plunged 32% in December. And December sales of the Toyota Sienna (up 3% in 2012) fell 6%.

December 2012 U.S. minivan sales chart
December 2012 Minivan Sales Chart
In the end, Chrysler owned 45.6% of the minivan market in the United States in 2012. That was up from 41.7% in 2011. For the Dodge Grand Caravan, America's best-selling minivan, 2012 was the best year since 2007, when 176,150 Grand Caravans were sold.

As always, you can find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these models by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats home or just clicking their name in the tables below. November 2012 Minivan Sales In Canada

2012 Kia Rondo molten red
From third last month, the Kia Rondo moved up to the second slot in November, right behind the Dodge Grand Caravan, Canada's best-selling minivan.

Canadians registered 7600 new minivans in November 2012. From a Chrysler Canada market share perspective, it was most definitely not the absurdly dominant month to which the company is accustomed. "Only" 47% of the minivans sold in Canada last month were built in Windsor, Ontario. Year-to-date, Windsor-built vans own 54% of the minivan market.

Mini-minivans were responsible for 31% of the category's November 2012 volume. Those three vans - the Rondo, Chevrolet Orlando, and Mazda 5 - accounted for just 14% of a much smaller overall minivan market a year ago. Canada's minivan market was up 16% in November.

As always, you can click any model name in the table below to see historical monthly and yearly sales figures. Or you can select any make or model at GCBC's Sales Stats home. Any vehicle you can't find tabled here will be listed elsewhere - you can select from segments like pickup trucks and commercial vans at GCBC's The Tally page.
