February 2013 Luxury SUV And Crossover Sales In America

2013 Audi Q7 S-Line red
Audi more than doubled U.S. Q7 sales in February 2013. Porsche sold an extra 516 Cayennes compared with February 2012, a 79% improvement. Volkswagen Touareg volume grew by 113 units. Combined, the Q7, Cayenne, and Touareg sold 2929 copies. In an uneventful month for the Acura MDX, it outsold the VW Group trio by 20 copies. The BMW X5 outsold the trio by 1002 units.

Viewed another way, however, the three big Germans from Volkswagen outsold the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Infiniti JX, and Land Rover's LR2, LR4, Range Rover, and Evoque combined.

The Cayenne is much more important to Porsche than the Touareg is to Volkswagen; more important than the Q7 is to Audi, as well. It's also the best-selling single member of the trio. 42% of the Porsches sold in the United States in February were Cayennes. The Touareg, admittedly Volkswagen's most expensive model and presumably a rather profitable one, accounts for less than 3% of Volkswagen brand sales. 6% of VW Group U.S. sales in February came from one of these three SUVs.

And Lexus sold 6938 RX350s and RX450h crossovers in February 2013.

For the first time, GoodCarBadCar is including the Buick Enclave with this group of "midsize" luxury SUVs and crossovers. The Enclave is priced from $36,945, some $8000 north of the segment-leading mainstream Ford Explorer and about $3000 below the segment-leading premium Lexus RX. So GCBC gives you the opportunity to see the Enclave compared both here and there

It may be a stretch to say the Enclave is a rival of the Mercedes-Benz ML and BMW X5. No, it is a stretch. But we're not suggesting the Volvo XC70 is a Porsche Cayenne alternative, either. Or that the Lexus RX compares as easily with the BMW X1 as it does with the Acura MDX. We've also added the A4 Allroad - combined sales of the Allroad and A4 appear in the luxury car sales chart. To subdivide the luxury SUV/CUV category any further would only make comparisons difficult.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for every one of these vehicles can be accessed by clicking a model name in the sortable tables below or by making a selection at GCBC's Sales Stats page. Non-mobile users can also use the dropdown menu near the top right of this page. GoodCarBadCar published a list of February 2013's 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers on the first of the month. Larger and/or more costly luxury SUVs were profiled last week.

January 2013 Luxury SUV Sales In Canada

Year-over-year, Canadian new vehicle sales fell 2.2% in January 2013. Keep in mind, Canadians registered 10,846 more vehicles last month than in the equivalent period of 2011, a 12.8% increase.  So while Canadian sales of the Audi Q5, for example, fell 11% compared with January 2012, Q5 volume is up 16.3% compared with January 2011 and 174% compared with January 2010.

2012 was nearly a record-setting year in Canada. Matching that level of sales in the lowest-volume month of 2013 wasn't going to be easy for some manufacturers, and that doesn't mean 2013 won't end as the higher-volume year. Rare was the luxury utility that posted a year-over-year Canadian sales improvement in January 2013. Sales of the BMW X1 fell 68%. Range Rover Evoque volume fell 31%; the Land Rover LR4 was down 43%. Audi Q7 sales dropped 36%. Lincoln's MKT and MKX slid 40% and 25%. Sales of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class slid 42%. And Volvo Canada posted a 37% decline in XC90 sales.

There were improvements, of course. The Acura RDX, BMW X3, Infiniti EX, Range Rover Sport, and Porsche Cayenne reported the most notable increases. But while premium brands landed in 18th and 19th spots among SUVs and crossovers in December, 17th and 20th in November, and 18th and 20th in October, only the Q5 finished in January's top 20.

January 2013 Luxury SUV Sales In America

U.S. sales of Acura's RDX very nearly tripled in January 2013 even as rivals from Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo also posted gains. Combined, sales of the RDX, Q5, X3, EX, Evoque, GLK, and XC60 rose 36% in January 2013. The RDX contributed an extra 1605 units to Acura's total; the ILX sedan another 1558. Sales of the RL, TL, TSX, ZDX, and MDX declined sharply.

In a market which rose 14%, sales of the Acura MDX slid 10%. At 2575 units, the MDX recorded its worst U.S. sales month since January 2010. It still outsold the majority of its competitors, but surging BMW X5 sales and the mere presence of the Lexus RX kept the MDX away from best seller status.

U.S. midsize luxury SUv sales chart January 2013
We always expect to see lower totals reported by all vehicles in January. After a strong December, the winter blues set in and volume is dragged down to its lowest point of the year. Year-over-year growth in the small luxury SUV sector isn't unexpected, however.

GoodCarBadCar has made these two tables sortable, simply click the column headers. The Volvo XC70, also listed with midsize luxury cars, has been added to this list for the sake of full disclosure. The Lexus RX and Cadillac RX appear in both tables for clarity reasons, as well. Click the accompanying charts for a larger view.
