January 2013 Sporty Car Sales In Canada

2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata red
Canadian sales of rear-wheel-drive cars like the BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and Nissan 370Z declined in January 2013. There were exceptions to the rear-drive failure rule, of course.

The Porsche Boxster was up 200%, for example, but it only sold as often as the declining SLK. The Dodge Challenger was up 22%, but it still didn't sell as often as the Mustang or Camaro. And while less costly cars like the aforementioned Hyundai and Nissan slid sharply, Porsche Canada sold 45 911s, up 150% year-over-year, and more than in any month since July.

Shining a light on the 911's situation, however, reveals the impact of a new generation of all-wheel-drive Carreras. Porsche Canada has never before sold this many 911s in the first month of the year. Rear-wheel-drive cars weren't the only ones to post year-over-year declines in January, not by any means. But in a market which shrunk 2.2%, it helps to provide an alternative.

More relevant than the year-over-year comparisons is the simple fact that the purchase of a rear-wheel-drive sports car or muscle car, in the middle of a Canadian winter, isn't common. In 2012, Ford sold eight times more Mustangs in May than in January; Mazda sold eight times more Miatas in July than in January; Nissan sold nearly eleven times more 370Zs in May than in January.

While the figures in the tables below remain relevant, they do not suggest a trend, a downward spiralling of sports car popularity or hot hatch success in Canada. One Canadian Subaru dealer I spoke to had multiple BRZs in stock in January but didn't expect to sell any of them until spring. The fact that January was the second-lowest-volume BRZ Canadian sales month so far thus means little.

Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we don't know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above.

January 2013 Luxury SUV Sales In Canada

Year-over-year, Canadian new vehicle sales fell 2.2% in January 2013. Keep in mind, Canadians registered 10,846 more vehicles last month than in the equivalent period of 2011, a 12.8% increase.  So while Canadian sales of the Audi Q5, for example, fell 11% compared with January 2012, Q5 volume is up 16.3% compared with January 2011 and 174% compared with January 2010.

2012 was nearly a record-setting year in Canada. Matching that level of sales in the lowest-volume month of 2013 wasn't going to be easy for some manufacturers, and that doesn't mean 2013 won't end as the higher-volume year. Rare was the luxury utility that posted a year-over-year Canadian sales improvement in January 2013. Sales of the BMW X1 fell 68%. Range Rover Evoque volume fell 31%; the Land Rover LR4 was down 43%. Audi Q7 sales dropped 36%. Lincoln's MKT and MKX slid 40% and 25%. Sales of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class slid 42%. And Volvo Canada posted a 37% decline in XC90 sales.

There were improvements, of course. The Acura RDX, BMW X3, Infiniti EX, Range Rover Sport, and Porsche Cayenne reported the most notable increases. But while premium brands landed in 18th and 19th spots among SUVs and crossovers in December, 17th and 20th in November, and 18th and 20th in October, only the Q5 finished in January's top 20.

January 2013 Luxury Car Sales In Canada

2013 Cadillac ATS crystal red
The newest Cadillac accounted for 47.5% of the brand's passenger car sales in January 2013. For the ATS to accomplish that feat, CTS sales basically had to decrease. And decrease they have. Sales of the CTS sedan, coupe, and wagon (if there are in fact sales of the wagon) plunged 59% in January after sliding 53% in December 2012, 44% in November, and 15% in October.

But is the ATS wholly to blame? Canadian sales of the Cadillac CTS were in decline before the ATS even arrived, falling 34% in September, 39% in August, and 29% in July. GM Canada hasn't reported a year-over-year increase in Cadillac CTS sales since February of last year, when CTS sales rose 8.5%. It's easy to say the ATS is eating up potential CTS buyers in the United States. But north of the border - whether the ATS is cannibalizing or just doing its own thing - the CTS has been struggling for a while.

For every Cadillac CTS sold or leased in Canada in January 2013, BMW sold or leased nearly twelve 3-Series sedans, coupes, convertibles, or Tourings. Compare that with the CTS's results in its home market where, in a rough month for both the Caddy and the BMW, the 3-Series wasn't quite twice as popular.

These results aren't surprising to Canadians who follow GCBC's monthly brand rankings. Cadillac, Lincoln, and the not-quite-there Buick accounted for 2.9% of the U.S. market in January. BMW, Mercedes-Benz (sans Sprinter), and Audi collected 4.7% of total U.S. volume. In Canada, however, where the Germans do own less of a less luxury-oriented market, their 4.4% market share stands tall compared to the dreadful 1.4% market share of the American trio. You read that right: barely more than one out of every 100 automobiles sold in Canada in January was an American brand luxury car, and that includes Buick.

Thus, to see the CTS and ATS totalling just 163 Canadian sales while at the same time combining to outsell the 3-Series by 455 sales in the U.S. seems perfectly appropriate. Canadians simply don't hanker after high-priced American cars. Give us our Fords, Hyundais, and BMWs, thanks.

This luxury car sales post has been wholeheartedly changed. It now includes a number of cars GCBC displays with other segments, too, like the Chrysler 300 and Buick Verano. These additions allow readers to see how cars fare against similarly-priced nameplates, not just the cars that have a lofty brand image. The accompanying charts can be clicked for a larger view.
