U.S. 2012 Station Sport Wagon Touring Estate Sales Figures

2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen Tornado Red
Station wagons are the vehicles in which people who are currently old grew up, the vehicles your parents replaced with a minivan, the vehicles you now say you want but refuse to actually buy.

In the eyes of many automotive writers, the ideal vehicle is an all-wheel-drive, diesel-powered wagon with a manual transmission. And brown paint. And cloth seats. It would be the ultimate Q car, a cargo hauler that's enjoyable to drive down a twisty road but doesn't cause the neighbours to think you're going through a midlife crisis.

Because you're an automotive writer, you dream of having an 2002tii project car, a spouse who drives a rust-free 1984 Jeep Wagoneer, and a Chris Harris-like salary that will enable you to park a Cuprite Brown Mercedes-Benz E63 Wagon in your driveway.

Most manufacturers tell us they don't import wagons to North America because of poor sales. (It also has something to do with CAFE.) The thing is, most manufacturers don't share their wagon sales info. So we don't know how bad things really are. That's not abnormal: you don't see Honda breaking down Civic sales by coupe and sedan, Ford doesn't share F-150 and F-250 and F-350 sales data, and Chevrolet doesn't split their monthly release with Camaro and Camaro Convertible sales figures.
2013 Acura TSX Sport Wagon Milano Red
Only on rare occasions do automakers share abundantly. Examples include Mini, in the U.S. but not in Canada, which breaks down Cooper sales by Hardtop, Clubman, Convertible, Coupe, and Roadster. Fiat, in Canada but not in the U.S., breaks down 500 sales by hardtop and cabriolet. Infiniti USA considers the G sedan and G Coupe/Convertible two different cars. Cadillac shares Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT data.

Generally speaking, however, automakers are loathe to share such data. Hyundai USA doesn't even provide the split between Genesis sedans and coupes, for goodness' sake. And the data that is shared? You don't see Cooper vs. Cooper S. vs Cooper S JCW, do you? Nope, nothing of the kind, not from Mini or any other automobile manufacturer.

So we don't know how many Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagons have been sold this year, and we therefore can't use the (presumably) small figures to help support Audi's theory that there's no point in delivering to us the A6 Avant. BMW doesn't share 3-Series Touring numbers. Cadillac throws the not-long-for-this-world CTS wagon in with the sedan and coupe.

Come to think of it, there isn't that much wagon sales data missing, because there are so few wagons on sale, because we don't actually buy brown, manual-trans wagons with diesel engines; we only say we will. Wagons have either been turned into quasi-SUVs - like the Audi A4 Allroad, Subaru Outback and Volvo XC70 - or erased from the North American market, like the Mazda 6, BMW 5-Series, and Volvo V50. Or they've never even been offered here, like the Chevrolet Cruze, Buick Regal/Opel Insignia, and Ford Focus.

What are we left with? Fortunately, Volkswagen USA and American Honda provide information for the Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen, which is actually a Golf Wagon, and the Acura TSX Sport Wagon.

Total Volkswagen Jetta sales through November 2012: 154,763, down 5% from last year. The Jetta is America's 21st-best-selling nameplate so far this year, but would fall behind the 25th-ranked Jeep Grand Cherokee without the wagon.

Total Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen sales through November 2012: 21,387, down 13.9% from last year, a 3458-unit drop. There's talk of limited SportWagen supply, but one assumes that Volkswagen would manufactur more if the company genuinely felt a substantially larger number could be sold.

The Jetta SportWagen accounts for 13.8% of all U.S. Jetta sales. Interestingly, the SportWagen outsells non-GTI Golfs by a healthy margin and outsells the Golf GTI and Golf R combined. Volkswagen's Tiguan, sales of which have risen 20.5% this year, has found 7034 more buyers than the Jetta SportWagen.

On to Acura then. The TSX Sport Wagon accounts for 14.3% of all TSX sales through November 2012. TSX Sport Wagon sales are up tp 3820 this year, a 31% gain, or 905 extra units. TSX sedan sales are down 6.4% to 22,903. The TSX is America's 111th-best-selling nameplate. Without the Sport Wagon, the TSX would drop just behind the 122nd-ranked Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.
2013 Subaru Outback 3.6 R Limited
Meanwhile, Audi has sold 2680 A4 Allroads since May and managed to sell 92% more Allroads in November 2012 than Audi sold A4 Avants in November 2011. The Volvo XC70 ranks 209th in U.S. new vehicle volume with 4995 sales, down 2.4% this year. The Subaru Outback is very popular, relatively speaking. Sales are up 15.9% to 105,481 in 2012, making the Outback America's 37th-best-selling vehicle. 2012 has proven to be the Outback's best post-Legacy separation sales year yet.

Think on these things.

August 2012 Top 30 Best-Selling Luxury Vehicles In Canada

2013 Volkswagen Touareg
The Volkswagen Touareg's Price Ranges
From $48,875 To $64,390
The BMW 3-Series, Canada's 17th-best-selling car in August 2012, was the country's best-selling premium automobile last month. BMW's X1, meanwhile, the third-best-selling luxury vehicle in July, fell to 18th spot in August as year-over-year volume slid 20%.

BMW has struggled to supply some of its models of late as the model year changes. Fortunately for BMW's Canadian dealers, the company's most popular car was widely available in August 2012. The X1 still outsold Cadillac's SRX, Mercedes-Benz's M-Class, and the Volvo XC60 in August.

Acura's semi-premium image allows for comparisons with both proletarian Hondas and high-end Benzes. The brand's value-oriented pricing and powerful incentives have driven sales forward at a 15% clip this year. Apart from the company's two most offensive models - the offensively boring RL and just plain offensive ZDX - Acuras are either relatively high-volume luxury cars or relatively low-volume mainstream products. Among luxury cars, the RDX, MDX, ILX, TL, and TSX ranked sixth, seventh, twelfth, 15th, and 36th in August.

Conversely, Acura's most obvious rival brand, Toyota's Lexus division, finished the month of August with vehicles ranking third, 14th, 28th, 30th, 37th, and 57th. Acura sold 10,452 automobiles to Canadians in the first eight months of 2012, 878 more than Lexus managed.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these vehicles can be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home. Links to other key August best seller lists can be clicked at the bottom of this post.

GCBC qualifies all vehicles from Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Acura, Cadillac, Audi, Infiniti, Lincoln, Volvo, Land Rover, Porsche, and Jaguar while also making exceptions for overtly premium cars like the Chevrolet Corvette, Nissan GT-R, Volkswagen Touareg, Hyundai Equus, and (reluctantly) the Hyundai Genesis sedan. Buick's lack of anything truly high-end hinders its value-priced vehicles from qualifying as premium, despite the image Buick held in a previous era. Yes, this means the B-Class is eligible because of the S-Class; the A3 because of the R8, to an extent. Unfortunately the lack of data separating vehicle trim lines from one another (F-150 XL vs F-150 Platinum, for example) means vehicles like the GMC Yukon Denali and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 aren't included. None of this should lead you to believe the Chrysler 300 and Toyota Avalon and Buick Enclave aren't luxurious, particularly as they're viable competitors for true premium players.

Luxury Auto Brand Market Share In Canada - May 2012

2013 Infiniti JX Interior
This Interior Helped Make The JX
Canada's Best-Selling Infiniti In May
One year ago, Japan's three luxury brands combined to own 19.6% of the Canadian luxury car market, less than BMW or Mercedes-Benz, individually. In May 2012, the same three brands - Acura, Infiniti, and Lexus - combined to own 26.2% of the Canadian luxury car market, substantially more than either BMW or Mercedes-Benz.

Yes, it takes three Japanese brands to outsell one of the two German giants, but the growth from 2011's awful supply-constrained May to the month we just concluded is astounding. And while some of that growth can be attributed to the fact that the situation couldn't have gotten much worse (year-over-year volume for Acura, Infiniti, and Lexus had fallen 27%, 37%, and 30%, respectively) there were a handful of specific vehicles which drove sales forward in May.

At Lexus, sales of Canada's best-selling luxury crossover, the RX, jumped 35%. The RX hybrid accounted for 11% of the 660 RX sales.  In Acura showrooms, the new RDX was the brand's second-best-selling model as sales jumped 176% to 594. And in only its second month on sale, the Infiniti JX35 became Canada's 13th-best-selling premium brand vehicle, finishing ahead of the BMW X5, BMW 5-Series, Acura TL, and Cadillac SRX.

The luxury brands in this chart were responsible for 14,824 sales in May 2012, or 8.4% of the overall market. The U.S. version of this chart shows luxury brands accounting for 10.2% of the overall American new vehicle market.

Top 30 Best-Selling Luxury Vehicles In America - May 2012

2013 Lexus RX450h trunk action
For the first time since December of last year, the Lexus RX won the monthly title of America's best-selling premium brand vehicle. In May 2012, BMW 3-Series sales slid 22% as supply of the new sedan was tight (Cars.com currently lists approximately three times as many 5-Series sedans as new F30 3-Series sedans in U.S. inventory) and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class's 35% increase simply wasn't enough to overcome the hot-selling RX.

2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 Golden Gate Bridge
The 2013 Lexus RX350 starts at $39,310. Not that the 3-Series sedan is a direct rival for the RX - it most certainly isn't - but the 328i happens to start at $34,900; the 335i at $42,400. Mercedes-Benz's C-Class has a base MSRP $100 below the 328i's. Recent history doesn't show BMW's 5-Series coming close to outselling the 3-Series in any single month, and though it didn't sell more frequently in May either, the 219-unit gap was slight. The 5-Series starts at $46,900 in the United States.

Cadillac's two top sellers ranked sixth and seventh in April. Those same two vehicles, the CTS and SRX, finished May behind seven other premium vehicles. May 2012 was the worst SRX sales month since June 2010, although sales slid by just ten units compared with May of last year. Cadillac's other entry, the Escalade, tied its Mercedes-Benz rival at the 28th position. Lincoln's best seller finished May in 21st. Audi, which landed the A4 in 12th spot last month, let its core sedan slide to 15th in May. Audi was America's third-best-selling premium brand in March but fell behind third-ranked Acura in April and May.

2012 Buick Regal GS Rear View
No, GoodCarBadCar isn't yet prepared to consider Buick a luxury brand, although it's not hard to see why some GM fans would consider Buick as high-end as Volvo or Acura. For the record, Buick sold 6709 Enclaves in May 2012, enough to make it the second-best-selling premium vehicle in America... if you consider the Enclave (a favoured and recommended vehicle here at GCBC Towers) a premium vehicle.

Buick also sold 5663 LaCrosse sedans, 3609 Veranos, and 2550 copies of the Regal, arguably the best-looking sedan on sale today.

Given the likelihood that most Hyundai Genesis sales are of the coupe variety, you can feel free to toss the tenth-best-selling Hyundai from this list, too. That would allow entry for the Lexus CT200h, sales of which jumped 241% to 1549 in May. Audi sold 1264 A5 and S5 coupes and cabriolets. Chevrolet sold 1219 Corvettes. Americans acquired 1197 Range Rover Sports, 1174 Porsche Cayennes and 1169 BMW 7-Series luxo-limos. Lincoln MKS sales rose 24% to 1128. Sales of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class hit 1022. All other premium nameplates failed to find more than 1000 buyers.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for these high-class automobiles and every other vehicle on sale can be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GoodCarBadCar's Sales Stats home or at the top right of this page. Lexus vs Acura vs Infiniti - 2012 Monthly And April Year-To-Date Sales

2013 Lexus RX350 F Sport
We'll be hearing about high U.S. sales volumes from most automakers when May sales data is released on Friday, June 1. Before those numbers are released, however, it's worth finding a bit of luxury automobile sales context from the data already released this year.

It's starting to seem like it's been a long time since "Japanese luxury" equated exclusively with the Toyota Cressida. Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti are well-known brands in North America and, particularly in the case of Lexus, becoming more famous across the globe. Toyota's luxury brand ranks as the third-best-selling premium brand in America so far this year, 23,667 sales ahead of Honda's premium division, Acura. Infiniti trails Acura by 9631 units, slotting in behind Audi and Cadillac, two brands which don't sell with quite the same frequency as Acura.
2012 U.S. Sales Lexus vs. Acura vs. Infiniti
Lexus sales are up less than 3% this year. Acura is up by just eight units. And Infiniti is down 3.6%. The overall new vehicle market has improved by 10.3%. It's not just mainstream brands that are reporting major gains. Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Land Rover, Jaguar, Maserati, and Bentley have all seen sales improve better than 15%.

The three most popular Japanese luxury vehicles - sales figures for which are posted after the jump - are down sharply this year. Of the 22 nameplates sold by Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti this year, 15 have recorded declining year-over-year sales. The Infiniti JX, of course, wasn't on sale at this time last year and thus has no previous year data with which 2012's 2619-unit four-month total can be compared.

Lexus vs. Acura vs. Infiniti isn't a battle mentioned that often, mainly because Mercedes-Benz and BMW are far more formidable foes for the Lexus brand. Nevertheless, 26 years after Honda established Acura, the success of these three brands in comparison with one another is routinely similar. Lexus easily beats Acura. Acura easily beats Infiniti.

Sales figures for any premium Japanese car and for any other vehicle currently on sale in North America can be accessed through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page. A complete rundown of every brand's April 2012 sales can be viewed here. And every one of the 255 vehicles acquired at least once in America is ranked by year-to-date volume here.
