Small Car Sales, Midsize Car Sales, Large Car Sales In Canada - January 2012

2012 Dodge Charger R/T
The Honda Civic was more than twice as popular as any other new car on sale in Canada in January 2012. Its number one competitor, the Hyundai Elantra, finished 2540 sales behind the Civic. 473 of the Elantras sold in Canada last month were Elantra Tourings, sales of which rose 21%. Elantra sedan sales were down 15% in January.

Canada small car sales chart January 2012
47 of the Chevrolet Sonic/Aveo's 516 sales were of the old guard Aveo variety. 94 of the 321 Fiat 500s sold were cabriolets. Toyota Yaris sales reached 578 in January 2012 - 476 of those sales were hatchbacks. 79 of the Golfs sold were GTIs. You can read how those 79 sales compare with the sales achievements of other sporting machines here. Predictably, Scion iQ sales were much better in its second month on sale than in December, an eight-unit month. Will January be the last time the smart fortwo holds off the iQ? There was only a 12-unit difference.

The Toyota Camry sold about once for every five Civics but it was January's leader among mainstream midsize cars in Canada. 164 of the 1007 Camrys sold were hybrids. For every 6.5 Prius V sales, there was one regular Prius sold. Kia and Hyundai want to be treated separately, and that's fair, but if you put the Sonata and Optima together, the corporation had 1137 midsize sales off the same platform. That's winning material. Granted, Toyota sold 791 Venzas, so you could tell Hyundai/Kia to add those to the Camry's pipe and smoke it.

Large cars are often ignored in Canada, but there were a few that performed especially well in January. The Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 were up 316% and 260%, respectively, with a combined sales total of 1127. The Ford Taurus and Buick LaCrosse? To put it simply, they were way less popular. To be honest, fleet sales play a huge role in this category and assigning desirability quotients to these sales figures would be a pointless exercise.

Specific year-over-year numbers and accompanying enlargeable charts are available for dozens of cars after the jump. Monthly and yearly data on all these models and every nameplate currently on sale can be accessed through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page or at GoodCarBadCar's Sales Stats home.

2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser Quick Sand
From Nanaimo to Ecum Secum, Canadian roads are filled with SUVs and crossovers of all types. Excluding the higher-end luxury pieces seen here and here, 25,071 of these vehicles were sold in January 2012 in the Great not-so-White North, equivalent to 25.7% of the Canadian new vehicle market.

Canada small suv sales chart January 2012
The leader of the pack can be seen in the first table after the jump: Ford Escape sales tumbled 26% to 2209, 258 more than the total put up by the second-ranked Dodge Journey. Among smaller utility vehicles, only two still-living-and-breathing nameplates suffered worse year-over-year drops than the Escape. Nissan Juke sales slid 33%; Subaru Forester sales plunged 36%.

Certain bigger SUVs and crossovers fared much worse last month. The Chevrolet Traverse fell 46% to 226 sales. Toyota's FJ Cruiser was down 42% to 43. Falling sales are a common theme for the FJ. In nine out of twelve months in 2011, sales were down. Yearly totals have fallen every year since the FJ Cruiser went on sale in 2006. Toyota's focus of late has clearly been on expanding hybrid technology rather than improving the FJ with the mission of providing Toyota clients with a real Jeep Wrangler alternative.

Large Luxury Car Sales And Large Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - January 2012

2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S profile
The Porsche Panamera ran away with nearly 30% of Canada's large luxury car market in January 2012. Sales of Porsche's big S-Class-fighting hatchback jumped 124% to 38, more than the Panamera managed in the two preceding months combined.

Canada large luxury car sales chart January 2012
Officially, Porsche Canada sold one basic Panamera, 15 copies of the Panamera 4, 13 copies of the Panamera 4S, six Panamera Turbos, and a single edition of the Panamera Turbo S in January.

Becoming Canada's best-selling large luxury car required sales of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (and its CL coupe brother) to slide from the 39 units Mercedes sold in January 2011. Indeed, S-Class sales plunged 39% all the way to 24, third in class. Sales of the BMW 7-Series and Jaguar XJ were on the rise, but not to the extent that beating the Panamera was a possibility, certainly not for the Jaguar.

Sales details for large luxury cars and large luxury SUVs are posted after the jump. 2012 Audi Q5 profile
Canada small luxury suv sales chart January 2012
Canadians made the Audi Q5 the most popular premium crossover or SUV in January 2012. Q5 sales jumped 31% year-over-year; it was Audi's best-selling model.

It's not as though the Audi is the only vehicle in its segment to perform well. Eight of the SUVs in the first table were on January's list of the 30 best-selling luxury vehicles in Canada even as three of those eight suffered year-over-year declines.

The larger Mercedes-Benz M-Class was the second-best-selling luxury SUV in Canada in January 2012. Sales of the middle-rung Benz utility vehicle soared through the roof at a 91% clip. Combined sales of the Acura MDX, Acura ZDX, and BMW X5 don't add up to what the Mercedes-Benz M-Class achieved last month.
