February 2013 Large Luxury SUV Sales In America

2013 Mercedes-Benz GL550 Interior quilted leather
Mercedes-Benz's dominant GL-Class outsold the combined efforts of the Cadillac Escalade trio, the Range Rover, and the Lexus LX570 in February 2013. You could put it another way: the GL outsold the Infiniti QX56, Lincoln Navigator, Toyota Land Cruiser, and the Range Rover combined.

That's strictly a view of U.S. February volume. Undoubtedly, the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is popular, and it's growing in popularity. 2012 volume was second only to 2007, when the overall U.S. vehicle market was nearly two million units larger. Through one-sixth of 2012, GL-Class sales in America are half-again as strong as they were last year.

We are not far from seeing what Cadillac will do with the next-generation Escalade. Not surprisingly, as it's aged, U.S. volume has suffered. The regular-wheelbase Escalade has found 1703 buyers this year, down 15%. Escalade ESV volume fell 10% to 1100 units. The Avalanche-based EXT is up 41% to 363, and it's also shown with pickups as February's twelfth-best-selling truck.

January 2013 Large Luxury SUV Sales In Canada

2013 Land Rover Range Rover autobiography firenze red
Land Rover Canada posted the company's third 50-units+ Range Rover sales performance in the last four months in January 2013. Year-over-year, the replacement process drove the Range Rover up 320%, a 64-unit improvement.

It's a meaningful result, no doubt. The much less costly Mercedes-Benz GL-Class (and its costly G-Class partner) sold much more frequently, yes. The wide-ranging Porsche Cayenne line (which GCBC lists with midsize luxury SUVs in large part due to its relatively low base price) did, too. But for the Range Rover to end the month ahead of the Cadillac Escalade and dozens of other $50K+ says something about the power new hi-lux automobiles carry.

It's called the gotta-have-it factor. And the Range Rover has got it in spades.

Incidentally, while sales of the overall Escalade trio fell 11% in January, it wasn't the EXT's fault. Sales of the Avalanche-based truck rose 267% from six units to 22.

Overall, even with the Benz GL's success, Canada's most expensive SUVs form a small category in the Canadian market, but not nearly as small as the large luxury car category. Canadians made the $73,200-$155,000 Jaguar XJ, with 35 sales, a segment leader in January. JLR's own $114,750-$144,000 Range Rover sold 2.4 times more often.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these models can be accessed by clicking the model name in the table below or by making a selection at GCBC's Sales Stats page. You can click the accompanying chart for a larger view and sort the table by columns, as well.

January 2013 Large Luxury SUV Sales In America

2013 Cadillac Escalade ESV Crystal Red
U.S. Escalade ESV Sales Fell 2.4% To 518 In January 2013
For the fifth time in the last seven tries, Mercedes-Benz USA sold more than 2000 GL-Class SUVs in a month. January 2013 volume rose 25%, and this in a market which grew 14%.

Predictably, as the third iteration disappears and the fourth-generation arrives, Range Rover sales are rising rather quickly. Land Rover came within 74 units of a year-over-year doubling of U.S. Range Rover volume.

Cadillac remains a prominent player in the large luxury sport-utility category, thanks in large part to versions other automakers don't offer. The regular-wheelbase Escalade was down 13% to 857 units in January. 45% of the Escalades sold in the United States last month were long-wheelbase ESVs or Avalanche-based EXTs. The Escalade EXT was America's 13th-best-selling truck in January. Out of 14 trucks.

December 2012 And 2012 Year End Large Luxury SUV Sales In Canada

Together, the Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, Infiniti QX56, Land Rover Range Rover, Lexus LX570, and Lincoln Navigator sold exactly as often as the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class and its über-niche G-Class in Canada in December 2012.

In the United States, 4.9% of the GL/G total stemmed from the stunning and strangely archaic G-Wagen. If that figure is identical in Canada, which I'm almost certain it is not, Mercedes-Benz Canada would have sold 97 G-Class military grade beasts in 2012 along with 1876 GL-Class SUVs.

Total GL-Class and G-Class sales rose 15% in 2012. Sales of the Range Rover also rose 15%. Lexus LX570 sales more than doubled, but the total remains weak. Sales of the Lincoln Navigator, Infiniti QX56, and Cadillac Escalade all declined. Year-over-year, Canada's overall new vehicle market grew 5.7%.

As always, you can find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for these SUVs and any other vehicle by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats home or by clicking the model name in the table below. December 2012 And 2012 Year End Large Luxury Car Sales And Large Luxury SUV Sales In America

For Lexus, using its big LS sedan to outsell the flagship sedans from Europe hasn't turned out to be all that successful a plan in the last couple years. December 2012 was different, however, as sales of the $71,990 Lexus LS were significantly better than that of Mercedes-Benz's S-Class... but still below those of the BMW 7-Series.

At the end of the year, it was the Mercedes-Benz S-Class that once again claimed the title as America's favourite big luxury car. Sales of the S-Class were down, however. That wasn't an uncommon theme in the segment in 2012. BMW 7-Series sales dropped 2% as the 6-Series Gran Coupe likely stole some sales toward the end of the year. Jaguar XJ sales dropped 7%, and the aforementioned Lexus LS slid 13%. Even the gains produced by the Porsche Panamera and Audi A8 were well below the overall industry's 13.4% improvement

Again, December was a good month for those in America who sold the largest and most expensive luxury car sales. The Audi A8 had its best month of the year. BMW's 6-Series cracked 1000 units for the first time in 2012. December was the 7-Series' second-best U.S. sales month of 2012 and the fourth-best sales month in the last three years. Lexus sold more LS sedans in November, but December was the LS's third-best sales month in the last three years.

As far as large luxury SUVs go, don't read too far into the Land Rover Range Rover's year end year-over-year decline. For one thing, Range Rover sales in 2011 were rather strong, stronger than they'd been since 2007. And rather obviously, December marks the beginning of a rather likely Range Rover resurgence, as the fourth-generation SUV is sure to attract plenty of attention from those who seek to buy (by which I mean lease) an expensive luxury SUV. Range Rover sales in December 2012 were stronger than they'd been since March 2011.

The Infiniti QX56 outsold the regular-wheelbase Cadillac Escalade in 2012. After outselling the Lincoln Navigator in 2010 and 2011, the long-wheelbase Cadillac Escalade ESV struggled a bit in 2012 and did not accomplish that feat. Sales of the Lexus LX570 and Toyota Land Cruiser are rising quickly (in comparison to what the LX and Land Cruiser managed last year) but they remain low-volume SUVs in a surprisingly high-volume segment.

The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class remains the volume king among large SUVs. Sales rose 4% this year to 26,042, just shy of the GL's all-time best year of 2007.

Looking for the Hyundai Equus or Cadillac XTS or Porsche Cayenne or Audi Q7? They're posted alongside vehicles in other segments, with "midsize" luxury cars and "midsize" luxury SUVs, names which mean little but do offer some definition. November 2012 Large Luxury Car And Large Luxury SUV Sales Figures

2013 Porsche Panamera V6 Ruby Red
Yikes. An Ugly Red Car With Red Wheels?
Audi, BMW, Lexus, and Porsche posted huge year-over-year Canadian sales increases with their flagship sedans in November. Of course, these are very low-volume cars, and massive gains - 89%, 160%, 84%, and 156%, respectively for the A8, 7-Series, LS, and Panamera - translate to relatively small volume increases.

In November 2012, the A8 brought in an extra eight sales for Audi compared with November 2011. BMW rather fittingly added 77 sales via the 7-Series. Lexus LS sales improved by 16 units. Porsche sold 25 more Panameras last month than in the same period a year earlier.

This doesn't mean the cars aren't huge sources of profit for luxury automakers. But in terms of the cars you see on Canadian roadways, the eight cars from the first table below accounted for just 0.27% of all the new vehicles sold in Canada in November 2012.

In the second table you'll see the significantly more popular large luxury SUV category. Between the GL-Class and very rare G-Class (there is no available breakdown between the two models), Mercedes-Benz found 189 buyers for their biggest SUVs, triple the number achieved by Mercedes-Benz's biggest sedan and its coupe sibling.
