February 2013 Top 10 Worst-Selling Vehicles In America

2013 Lincoln MKZ glass roof
U.S. Sales Of The New
MKZ Are On The Upswing
The new Porsche Cayman is on its way. Hold your breath. Wait for it. Be patient. Watch Chris Harris drift a yellow one around a track. Check out Cars.com's inventory, where a California dealer is currently listing six Caymans, curiously sans pictures, ranging in price from $67,470 to $80,885. Consider the fact that Canadians sometimes get things first. Five were sold north of the 49th parallel in February.

And then take note of the fact that only a solitary Cayman found a home in the U.S. in February 2013. This near non-existent sales performance has been common for the Cayman - Porsche didn't exactly nail the timing of one car's departure and another car's arrival.

Regardless, to call it a worst seller is a bit of a stretch. Naturally it won't sell well... if there are none to sell

Lincoln apparently wants to get the new MKZ's quality just right, so dealers aren't getting them as quickly as they'd like. Lincoln did, however, sell twice as many MKZs in February as in the month before. In the first worst sellers table below, once you get past Cayman and MKZ, Japanese brands take over. From the disappointing Mazda 2 through to the in-replacement-phase Mazda 6, U.S. volume of these eight cars declined by at least 47% in February.

In the second and third worst sellers tables, vehicles are ranked by February 2013 U.S. volume. First, only cars with base prices under $45,000 are eligible. In the final chart, all (uncancelled) vehicles are eligible. Of course, the second list takes on a higher-end feel. Predictably, even when sales of a $99,950 Nissan are half again as strong as they were a year ago, it's still not rivalling a Toyota Camry for output.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these vehicles can be accessed at GCBC's Sales Stats page or, by non-mobile users, through the dropdown menu near the top right of this page. GoodCarBadCar ranked America's most popular vehicles in February this past Saturday.

Watch Untitled Jersey City Project Episode 3

We left episode 2 of Untitled Jersey City Project in the back of a limo. We begin episode 3 of Untitled Jersey City Project... in the back of a limo, discussing fish.

And we don't see the silver 2012 Audi A6 until the 1:40 mark. That can be offered up as proof that this is much more than a commercial.

Episode 3 of Untitled Jersey City Project is below. Skip ahead to Episode 4 here.

Watch Untitled Jersey City Project Episode 2

The suspense from episode 1 isn't over. You've only watched two minutes of television, after all. The story continues below.

If you're not aware of what the Untitled Jersey City Project is all about, check out the explanation before watching the first episode. The 2012 Audi A6 plays a big part, no doubt, but it's relatively subtle advertising. You'd see more of Jim Rockford's Pontiac Firebird in the Rockford Files.

Episode 2 of Untitled Jersey City Project is below. Don't get too scared now, kids. Check out episode 3 when you're ready.

Watch Unitled Jersey City Project Episode 1

It's only been a few days since GoodCarBadCar.net published news which proved the Audi A6 was the most secure car in America. Whether that's true in Jersey City, specifically, remains to be seen.

Untitled Jersey City Project, is, "a unique experiment in the development of an entertainment concept: it's a work-in-progress television drama." It's also a different way of advertising the new 2011 Audi A6. Remember BMW Films? Clive Owen, Madonna, John Frankenheimer? Rest assured, the driving in Untitled Jersey City Project won't be nearly as impressive, but there's a whole lot of story spread over a handful of two-minute episodes. They'll be aired on FX on Sunday nights, but you can watch them all on GoodCarBadCar.net

Directed by Daniel Minahan, Untitled Jersey City Project features some people who will look vaguely familiar. The car (and its driver) apparently can't out-run vehicles we'd assumed would have been much slower. Indeed, the car doesn't actually receive as much attention as you would expect. But it does help make a case for itself as an image supporter for the lead character, an architect.

Episode 1 of the Untitled Jersey City Project is below. Click here to go straight to episode 2.

Top Gear V8 Blender Video

Jeremy Clarkson and the crew at Top Gear are convinced that there are ways to keep the V8 alive even as car consumers and automakers are rejecting the bent-eight in favour of a turbocharged V6 or even inline-four.

One such recycled use is for the 6.2L V8 from the Chevrolet Corvette to power a blender. Goodness, if governments outlawed the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette, what use would its engine have other than in your kitchen?

What does all this have to do with GoodCarBadCar.net's usual regimen of Sales Stats, Sales Stats, and more Sales Stats? Sales of the Chevrolet Corvette in 2010 in Canada were 316 through the first three quarters of the year. U.S. sales of the Chevrolet Corvette totalled 9798 through the end of September 2010. In other words, Corvette sales in the country with cheaper fuel are 31 times stronger than in the country with more expensive fuel (Canada) even though the Canadian market is only seven times stronger. Hmm. V8s are dying?

Watch the Top Gear video below for a taste, as it were, of what a V8 can do outside of a car's engine room.

Watch Ken Block Gymkhana Three Part 2

Ken Block Gymkhana Three Part 1 was kind of boring. Here at GoodCarBadCar.net, Gymkhana Three Part 1 was basically ignored. Blame forgetfulness, sheer stupidity, or just utter concentration on Sales Stats, but The Good Car Guy also left Ken Block Gymkhana Two by the wayside. Posted, yes, but not actively endorsed.

Part Two of Ken Block's Gymkhana Three isn't meant to be easily forgotten. Inside an excitingly tuned-up version of a 5-door Ford Fiesta, Ken Block drives around l'Autodrome near Paris, France, Ken Block performs as impeccably as ever. Compared with the airfield videography in Ken Block Gymkhana Two, the general feeling of the clip is a bit of a letdown. For all I know, it could be the light. Or the director's decision to allow more real-time footage into the final product. But who cares? Never has the already good-looking Ford Fiesta looked so good. Or driven so hard. Around such a complicated and characterful - and steeply-banked - course. Ken Block does some amazing things with this Fiesta.

In the video you've probably already watched below, the moments most enticing to me were those filled with the accelerative force of the 650-bhp Ford Fiesta. Enjoy those bursts at 2:05, 3:19, and 4:23 in particular.

One more thing before you press play. Watch this clip in full screen mode. It's high quality, and you'll want to see every speck of dirt fly.

WATCH TOP GEAR REVIEW OF FERRARI 458 ITALIA

"Absolutely, unbelievably, mesmerizingly.... brilliant," Jeremy Clarkson says of the Ferrari 458 Italia. At GoodCarBadCar.net, everything Jeremy Clarkson or Top Gear says about a car isn't automatically accepted. But The Good Car Guy pretty much decided the Ferrari 458 Italia was an all-time great as soon as pictures were released. Anything looking that good with that kind of power from that factory wearing that badge is enshrined as Better Than Almost Anything Else.

Still, I had no idea the 458 Italia looked this good. Top Gear has a knack for cinematography, casting a glow or a shadow in just the right place with engine sounds to match the soundtrack and oversteer angles which put the vehicle's best cheek forward. So with Jeremy Clarkson's Top Gear review of the Ferrari 458 Italia in the video below, GoodCarBadCar.net has gone even more head-over-heels for the Four-Five-Eight

12 minutes and 19 seconds of a beautiful car with plenty of humour and lots of statistics can be found in the video below.

WATCH THE SMART CAR IN IRREGULAR PLACES - SMART FORTWO MEETS BASKETBALL COURT

Now that GoodCarBadCar.net has been responsible for the care of a smart fortwo for one year, all its driving habits are known and the comfort level The Good Car Guy possesses with the car is as high as it'll ever be. Of course, the most obvious smart car characteristic relates to its size. To be more specific, the smart fortwo is small. Perhaps you'd noticed.

How small? Well, GoodCarBadCar.net compared the smart's dimensions the Scion iQ and Nissan Cube. But for a real-world perspective, the smart fortwo's size is easier to notice when driven in a small place. Not far from GCBC Towers is a neighbourhood basketball court. More could be said, but it's best if you just watch the video below. Next time we're hoping to tackle a nearby tennis court.

WATCH FORD'S NUEVO FIESTA'S AMBIENT LIGHTING

Some 15% of the U.S. population is Latino. Whether, in Stephen Colbert's words, you see colour or not, Ford Motor Company wants to advertise more directly to Spanish-speaking people in the United States. One way to do so is with the lovely little YouTube clip you can Watch below. The Good Car Guy's Spanish is limited to ordering a Coca-Cola in Nayarit convenience stores, usually with assistance from a Spanish-speaking nephew or niece beside me. However, I can dig great interior lighting. And great interior lighting is present and accounted for in Ford's new Fiesta. Rather, Ford's nuevo Fiesta.

2011 TOYOTA SIENNA SWAGGER WAGON - WATCH ALL 13 ASSOCIATED CLIPS

Created by ad firm Saatchi & Saatchi and starring Rachel Drummond and Brian Huskey, the 2011 Toyota Sienna Swagger Wagon music video/commercial/YouTube sensation is the ideal minivan ad. Playing up minivan stereotypes with humour and some pretty decent acting, the Swagger Wagon clip went viral. Oh, and by the way, U.S. sales of the Toyota Sienna in May were up 49.7%.

In a segment that's either dying or stagnant, it probably wasn't that hard for Toyota to sign off on a different approach for the 2011 Sienna's advertising. What's there to lose? (Conventional minivan advertising can be seen here.) You get the impression director Jody Hill got exactly what he was looking for, Toyota got exactly what they were looking for, and we got exactly what we didn't expect.

Yet there's much, much more than just the Swagger Wagon music video. Apart from a few short cuts you can see on Toyota's Sienna YouTube channel, The Good Car Guy counts 13 Sienna ads in the Swagger Wagon vein. You can watch them all after the jump where they are all neatly ranked. Included in the rankings The Good Car Guy has also supplied any necessary tidbits and the best line from the clip. After all, these ads really are about the writing as much as they are about the 2011 Toyota Sienna.

#13 - Daddy Like Protecting
"Then he stopped talking to me.... It's been a few years." @ 0:09
The Advanced Technology Package Daddy's talking about is an option only on the $39,355 Sienna Limited.

#12 - Diaper Bag
"But I'm not runnin' around rockin' mom jeans." @ 0:14
Want more stereotyping? The cops in this clip are eating hot dogs and drinking soda.

#11 - Daddy Like Help
"Once they lose that new kid smell there's one minor flaw - they have no work ethic. None." @ 0:07
Want power-folding third-row seats? Think Sienna Limited, once again.

#10 - Mommy Like Versatility
"Je suis le fromage." @ 0:31
All-wheel drive Siennas start at $31,130.

#9 - Mommy Like Rest
"I'm not saying that about myself. I have evidence." @ 0:10
Tip-up and long-slide is ready and willing on all 2011 Siennas.

#8 - Daddy Like Space
"Roll the windows down; let the wind just rush through my hairs...." @ 0:43
Even cool commercials can't make wood trim sound good.

#7 - Timeout
"Frankly, the idea of owning a minivan used to make me cry myself to sleep at night." @ 0:01
For most of us, the idea of owning a minivan still makes us cry ourselves to sleep.

#6 - Daddy Like Bonding Time
"Open a new bottle - I don't want it to be flat." @ 0:38
For true reclining pleasure the Sienna should've been pointed the other direction. IMHO. Then again, I'm pretty particular with my reclining positions.

#5 - Car Wash
"It's like they took my essence, bottled it, and then poured it all over the car." @ 0:16
That is a lot of vehicle to wash.

#4 - Playdate
"You've got the same car seat in there, Gary." @ 0:12
Siennas made up less than 10% of all Toyotas sold in the USA in May. There shouldn't be too many out there just like yours.

#3 - Mommy Like I Spy
"This girl, she's the loudest breather you have ever heard." @ 0:27
Don't like, do anything illegal with your backup camera, ok?

#2 - Mommy Like Deals
"Can you afford love? Can you afford love?" @ 0:20
An amazing price? When did minivans get so expensive? 2011 Siennas start at $24,620. Or $6,155 per cylinder. Ouch.

#1 - Meet The Parents
"We are winning at parenthood." @ 1:00
Ever really thump a stereo in a minivan? There's something about minivan acoustics, it really can be a very good thing.

VOLKSWAGEN CANADA - DOES SAFE HAPPEN WITHOUT STABILITY CONTROL?

volkswagen jetta
*Updated @ 6:50pm on 5.21/10 with VW's response*

An unfortunate discovery forms the foundation of this Volkswagen criticism. If hypocrisy is the name of the game, then what a terrible game it must be. I, like others, enjoy Volkswagen's "Safe Happens" commercials as much as the next guy. In a strange way, the "Safe Happens" commercials are convicting, helping to form a proper view of life - it appears for a little while and then vanishes away. On the other hand, Volkswagen's "Safe Happens" commercials are convincing: sound German engineering will protect you in case of a serious accident. So solid is the Volkswagen Jetta, you might just be able to walk away, the commercials lead you to believe.

However, behind Volkswagen's ability to convince in this commercial is just a little bit, a very little bit, of conniving. Volkswagen convinces us that, in case of an accident, the high price you paid for the product will be worth it when you find your car crushed but your bones intact, yet the Jetta is offered to the Canadian public without a little piece of technology which could help you escape an accident in the first place.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. The collision portrayed in the "Safe Happens" commercial you can watch after the jump was no fault of the Volkswagen Jetta's lack of stability control. Even with electronic stability control, the Jetta would still have been smoked by an oncoming car. This is why I've used the phrase, "very little bit of conniving". Volkswagen's "Safe Happens" commercials send the message that they've engineered this car so perfectly you'll never need to worry about your safety or the safety of your friends and family. By making stability control an option rather than standard equipment, Volkswagen is also saying they value your safety; but at a price.

Is that so terrible? Automakers must take into account the personal safety of all future occupants, but they've got to make money too, right? Going into business isn't just a public service, it's a way to earn a living. So if Volkswagen decides to take safety seriously.... up to a point, and then charge $450.00 for their Electronic Stablization Program in Canada, they're just trying to make sure their business stays afloat, right?

A paragraph of valid questions that may be, but 2012 sees the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration mandating stability control on every car because it saves lives. In fact, in the United States, every new Volkswagen Jetta is equipped with stability control. Safe happens? Yeah, but only south of the 49th parallel.

Don't allow yourself to lump Volkswagen in a pot by itself. GoodCarBadCar.net has criticized Hyundai's safety hypocrisy before. Of Canada's three best-selling cars, only the Toyota Corolla comes standard with stability control. The Honda Civic can only be fitted with stability control if you're buying the Civic EX-L, Civic Hybrid, or Civic Si; Honda doesn't even make stability control an option on the less-expensive models. Mazda 3 buyers look at a spec sheet and see stability control as standard equipment on the GT and MazdaSpeed 3 but an option on the GS and unavailable on base models. Thanks for protecting us. And for the record, Honda Canada's website makes safety one of three bullet points on the Civic sedan's main page and safety is the second section on Mazda Canada's 3 overview page.

What's so great about stability control? This video will help you understand, but a few simple facts should make the case for ESC. Mandated stability control is expected to reduce single-vehicle accidents by 34%, NHTSA says, while saving 5,600-9,300 lives each year in the United States alone once all light vehicles on the road are equipped properly. Good enough?

red smart fortwo
Those facts are good enough for Mercedes-Benz, the makers of the ultra-compact and inexpensive smart fortwo. GoodCarBadCar.net's long-term 2009 smart fortwo comes standard with stability control for $14,990 in Canada. The Volkswagen Jetta, even the $28,540 Jetta TDI Comfortline, requires another $450 spent to secure stability control. So yeah, Safe Happens, but only if you live south of the border, or spend more than $30,000 on your Canadian-market Jetta, or shell out another $450 for options. Safe maybe doesn't always happen.

Don't be hard on stability control, either. This isn't antiquated traction control from your mother's 90s minivan, a system still found on many vehicles with stability control. ESC, called something different by almost every automaker, is your active safety net. Rest assured, you'd rather have an active safety net than be forced to observe how well your passive safety net actually protects you when it smacks you in the face. All the airbags in the world won't do anything for you until you're in the accident. Stability control wants to keep you from having the accident in the first place.

As for the smart fortwo, not a single member of its most similarly priced competition group in Canada is even available with stability control. Not the Chevrolet Aveo, not the Hyundai Accent, not the Kia Rio, not even the Toyota Yaris or Honda Fit. Apparently spending half as much on a car nets you the protection of stability control, but only if you go with a smart fortwo and not a more traditional transporter. Ironically, the Scion iQ, judging by the Toyota iQ's spec sheet, will be fitted with stability control as standard equipment.

Let this be a lesson to other safety hyprocrites. The Good Car Guy has called out a few of you, and it's not fun to sit at the front of the class with a dunce cap on your head.

WHY THE 2011 TOYOTA SIENNA SWAGGER WAGON AD IS PERFECT

toyota sienna
Let's you and I go on the record: I'm not in the market for a minivan. And you? You know the 2011 Toyota Sienna would be the rational choice, but the Toyota Highlander holds more appeal, the Mazda CX-9 is gorgeous, and you could cram your stuff in a 2010 Toyota 4Runner, too. Hey, it's a Good 12 Supersize winner - the Sienna ain't and likely won't be.

Strangely enough, certain crossovers and SUVs are collecting a minivan-like image problem. Why would you drive a large vehicle with three rows of seats, no off-road capability, and no all-wheel drive.... unless you had children? Does the purchase of a Mazda CX-9 provide you with less of a Soccer Mom image than the purchase of a 2011 Toyota Sienna? Doubtful.

Toyota has now come to the realization, however, that their minivan's image problem might as well be something on which to capitalize. So a minivan is a great vehicle for parents? Uh... great! Minivans are the official vehicle of the suburbs? S'fine with suburbanites! Minivans transport children to playdates? Good, they do it better than anything else!

This is the message behind the 2011 Toyota Sienna's Swagger Wagon video promo. The official version is nearly up to 400,000 views on YouTube. 2 minutes and 35 seconds of minivan humour is the ideal way to start your day. Will this ad have any impact on the Sienna's middling success in the U.S. Marketplace? I can see how it would. Rather than focus solely on the Sienna's unexpectedly dramatic appearance or its completely anticipated crash test perfection or diverting the focus away from its instrinsic minivan nature, Toyota is playing it up.

It's a minivan - deal with it. People will choose the 2011 Toyota Sienna because they are people who drop their children off at school, because they take their kids to hockey practice at 6am, because they have kids who spill cheerios down in the seat cracks, because their stereo will play Sharon, Lois & Bram more often than Rihanna. Why not advertise directly at these people rather than think up a Sienna ad that would appeal to me and finding out I'm not your target market? Click through the jump for a look at the Swagger Wagon video.
