February 2013 Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs And Crossovers In Canada

2013 Toyota RAV4 Barcelona Red
Canada's top-selling SUV squeaked out a victory over a perennial top five candidate, the surging RAV4. Helped by a clear-out of outgoing third-generation RAV4s and the arrival of the heavily-marketed fourth-generation RAV4, Toyota came within 44 units of catching the Ford Escape.

15 of Canada's 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers sold less than half as often as the Escape and RAV4. In a market which suffered a 3.3% decrease in overall Canada-wide volume, nine of Canada's 20 most popular SUVs and crossovers posted year-over-year increases. Through two months, BMW X3 sales are up 86%. During the same two months, sales of the smaller and less expensive BMW X1 are down 65%. The X1 was BMW's best-selling SAV at this time last year, it ranks third in the four-member family this year.

All Vehicles Ranked By February 2013 & YTD Canadian Sales

Yet strong sales of the X3 have more than made up for the X1's losses, and the X5's decline, too. Relevance? The BMW X3 was Canada's top-selling premium brand utility last month; the Audi Q5 outsold the Lexus RX by ten units. Just missing out on the February 2013 edition of Canada's 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers was the 21st-ranked RX, historically the premium brand leader in the utility vehicle category. 46 of the 449 RXs sold were hybrids.

GoodCarBadCar published the list of Canada's 20 best-selling cars earlier this evening. All 13 trucks were ranked earlier this week. Sales figures for these 20 best-selling SUVs - sales figures for any current vehicle - can be found by making a selection at GCBC's Sales Stats page. That's where you'll find, for example, that Mazda only began selling the CX-5 last February, which explains the huge year-over-year increase.

February 2013 Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs And Crossovers In America

2013 Chevrolet Equinox red
The best-selling SUV in America in February was once again the Ford Escape, its second such victory in as many months. The Honda CR-V, 2012's leading utility vehicle, ranked second with a 16.5% decline that brought it dangerously close to the third-place Chevrolet Equinox.

Lexus reported a 20% increase in RX sales in February. That was more than enough to land the RX in the top 20, the only premium brand vehicle to have done so since December.

Nissan set a record in February Pathfinder volume. Nissan's second-biggest utility vehicle still trailed the Ford Explorer by 10,377 units, the Honda Pilot by 2600 sales, and the Toyota Highlander by 2296, not to mention numerous other small and midsize SUVs and crossovers. 4.6% of Explorer volume stemmed from the Police Interceptor Utility.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for these vehicles and every other nameplate on sale can always be accessed through the dropdown at GCBC's Sales Stats page. GCBC also published the February rankings of America's best-selling trucks and the top-selling cars. What you see below, however, are the most popular SUVs and crossovers from February 2013.

January 2013 Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs In Canada

2013 Ford Escape Towing Ruby Red
Huge declines by a couple of Canada's most popular vehicles helped drag down the overall market in January 2013, but that doesn't mean the most popular utility vehicles suffered. The market lost 2105 sales. Honda's Civic was down by 2436. The Dodge Grand Caravan lost 762 sales. The disappearance of the Ford Ranger brought the market down by another 650.

2013 Jeep Compass Red
Canadian Sales Of The Jeep
Compass Jumped 75% In January
Meanwhile, sales of Canada's most popular SUV, the Ford Escape, shot up 24%, or 532 units. Dodge Journey sales rose slightly. Hyundai Santa Fe volume improved 25%. Sales of last year's second-ranked utility, the Honda CR-V, fell 27%. But the fifth-ranked Jeep Wrangler, which ranked twelfth among SUVs and crossovers at this time in 2012, shot up 44%.

The Wrangler was just one of four Jeeps in the top 14. With the Liberty's current hiatus (only six were sold in January, and it's not even listed on the company's website), every available Jeep was a top seller.  The quartet finished 2012 in seventh, 13th, 20th, and 23rd.

GoodCarBadCar has already published the list of Canada's 20 best-selling passenger cars, and the best-selling trucks list is coming up shortly. Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any vehicle, including these 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers, can be accessed at GCBC's Sales Stats page. Select a make and model and you're on your way to finding out that January was the Mazda CX-5's eleventh-best Canadian sales month so far, but the second-best in the United States.

January 2013 Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs In America

2013 Ford Explorer Red
Non-Police Explorer Sales Rose 46% In The U.S. In January 2013
After its best-ever 2012, the Honda CR-V stumbled early on in 2013, falling back to second spot on this list of America's 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers. The Ford Escape, sales of which jumped 15.5% in January, took over the top spot, a position it battled for in 2012 but ultimately lost to the CR-V.

The CR-V was one of eight Japanese brand utility vehicles in the top 20 in January. None posted as sharp an increase as the 17th-ranked Nissan Pathfinder, sales of which tripled compared with January 2012. Nissan's Rogue was the eight-best-selling SUV in America in 2012 despite a 10% decline.

The eight Japanese brand utilities were joined by two Korean nameplates: the closely related Hyundai Santa Fe and stronger-selling Kia Sorento. Sales of both models improved noticeably in January, and the Sorento's transition to a similar-looking but substantially altered 2014 model should provide another boost.

That leaves the Escape and nine other Detroit brand SUVs. Three Jeeps, three Fords, two Chevrolets, one GMC, and one Dodge round out the group. Of the 20, only the CR-V and Rogue posted year-over-year declines. The Detroit utilities were led by the Escape, but on the improvement front, the Ford Explorer, GMC Terrain, and Dodge Journey led with 53%, 51%, and 93% improvements. 4.3%, or 653, of the Explorer's total was Police Interceptor-derived.

GCBC has already posted lists of America's 20 best-selling passenger cars and figures for every truck, best sellers and poor sellers alike. You can find historic monthly and yearly sales figures for the 20 top-selling SUVs in the table below and for every other vehicle on sale in America by accessing the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home.

2012 Year End Top 25 Best-Selling SUVs In Canada

2013 Volkswagen Tiguan white
On this list of Canada's 25 best-selling SUVs and crossovers in 2012, you'll find 16 different brands which originate in four countries from eleven different corporations. There's nothing too big here, not like on the U.S. version of this list where you'll find the Chevrolet Tahoe.

The best-selling SUV in Canada was once again the Ford Escape, though sales fell slightly compared with 2011, even as Canada's new vehicle market grew 5.7%. The Escape was undergoing a model transition, although the second-generation vehicle's ability to sell like the first-gen Escape has often been called into question.

All 262 Vehicles Ranked By 2012 Canadian Sales

After ending 2011 as Canada's third-ranked utility vehicle, surging sales helped the Honda CR-V climb into second spot. This meant the Dodge Journey fell back to third place. Despite strong end-of-year sales, the Hyundai Santa Fe's own model changeover did it no favours, and the top-ranked Korean slid to fifth from fourth in 2011.

The Chevrolet Equinox, Jeep Wrangler, Ford Edge, Nissan Rogue, and Kia Sorento rounded out the top ten. In 14th spot, Ford's Explorer beat the Jeep Grand Cherokee by 11 sales after trailing the Jeep by 877 sales in 2011. Luxury nameplates start filling in the gaps beginning with the Lexus RX in 18th spot. RX sales were up 5.5% in 2012. One out of every ten RXs sold was a hybrid. The Audi Q5 ranked 22nd in Canadian SUV/CUV sales in 2012, and its corporate sibling from Volkswagen, the tiny Tiguan, ranked 25th, 118 sales ahead of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, sales of which shot up 44% in 2012.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these models can always be accessed by selecting a vehicle at GCBC's Sales Stats page. There's much more to come in the Canadian recap of 2012's auto sales. A multitude of U.S. 2012 sales stories have already been published. Below, you'll find the 25 best-selling SUVs in Canada from 2012, and it's an interesting little melting pot.
