Maserati Sales In America: 2002 - 2011

2012 Maserati GranCabrio Sport Red roof down
In the United States, Maserati sold 2321 cars in 2011. That's more than Bentley sold but less than half as many as smart. Not that smart and Maserati are direct competitors. Because they aren't. But there is the whole European two-seat thing going on at both brands.

Anyhow, 2011 proved to be a favoloso year for Maserati. Sales jumped 22.4% in an overall market which rose just 10.3%. In the last decade, only Maserati's booming years of 2007 and 2008 were better. Maserati USA's 2011 sales total was 2.7 times better than it was a decade ago.

And there's better news, at least for Maserati's output; if not for its image: the 2013 Kubang is likely going to do for Maserati what the Cayenne did for Porsche

Study the chart below for a closer look at what Fiat-owned Maserati has been able to accomplish over the last ten years in America. An already-published chart just like this one lays out Bentley's decade-long accomplishments. It's worth a look.

PHOTO COMPARISON OF TEN LARGE LUXURY SEDANS

To the human eye, shape trumps detail more often than not. The grandeur of a palace will grab your attention even if the colour of its bricks are not to your liking. The silhouette of a woman's body is most likely going to stop a man in his tracks despite the fact that her eyes are too close together and her nose is too wide. A thick t-bone steak cut by the best butcher in Texas will have you salivating.... right up until you see that it's 45% fat.

Likewise, the profile of a beautful new car, particularly as it passes you at high speed, will hold you spellbound. Maybe you hate twin-kidney grilles or bulbous fenders or angular taillights or oversized wheels, but the initial moment in which you spotted the shape of the vehicle will forever remain etched on your automotive conscience.

Yet automobiles basically come in only a handful of shapes. You have 1-box minivans, 2-box hatchbacks and wagons, 3-box sedans, wedge-like supercars and mid-engine roadsters, and back-on-its-haunches rear-wheel drive performance cars. Or, to be more specific, almost every vehicle's shape could fall under the heading of: Dodge Grand Caravan, Volvo V70, Honda Accord, Lamborghini Gallardo, and Ford Mustang. Agreeing with that analysis doesn't mean you don't see differences - huge differences - between a Chevrolet Corvette and a Nissan 370Z. In fact, if anything, agreeing with that analysis only praises the talent of automotive designers who continue to work with the consistent limitations presented by four wheels, a powerplant, a cabin, and cargo space.

Now look at one vehicle segment, expanded slightly for the purposes of this article, for evidence of designer talent when styling large, high-end 3-box sedans. Because the Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide are actually hatchbacks and thus strikingly different in overall shape, they're not appearing in pictures after the jump. But ten other big sedans, including a concept and a heavy-duty whippersnapper from Korea, are shown, all with emphasis on profile. We'll all have unique guttural reactions to certain cars while finding others forgettable and some downright offensive. Deep down, these cars are rivals. However, they're seen competing in a high-dollar arena where personal design preference holds far more weight than financing deals or brake horsepower figures. Click through the jump to decide for yourself.

LOW VOLUME AUTOMAKER SALES IN THE USA - JUNE 2010

maserati quattroporte sport gts
This isn't something GoodCarBadCar.net is able to do every month, but since we're halfway through 2010 and June Sales Stats were available early, here's a rundown of eight low-volume premium automobile manufacturers from June 2010, along with year-to-date U.S. totals through June. Get January's figures here.

-----

#8 - Maybach: 3
Year-to-date: 18
Maybach sales fell in June and are down from 30 at the halfway point of 2009.

#7 - Rolls-Royce: 26
Year-to-date: 156
Rolls sales have fallen slightly this year and were down 1 unit in June, despite having more models on offer than in most moments in history.

#6 - Lamborghini: 27
Year-to-date: 162
Slight declines in both June and year-to-date sales shouldn't be that surprising given Lamborghini's aging lineup.

#5 - Lotus: 55
Year-to-date: 330
Although competing in a significantly lower price bracket than others on this list, Lotus is unable to grab large chunks of the automotive Marketplace which falls to BMW, Porsche, and Audi with far greater frequency.

#4 - Aston Martin: 92
Year-to-date: 552
Chock full of models like ne'er before, Aston Martin has still found a way to post a slight drop in June and year-to-date volume.

#3 - Bentley: 116
Year-to-date: 688
Sales at this old Rolls-Royce partner dipped a bit in June but are up through June 30th of 2010.

#2 - Ferrari: 120
Year-to-date: 720
Try to set aside your envy and replace it with satisfaction that there are 720 more Ferraris on U.S. roads (and in garages) than there were at the end of last year. Sales have slipped a bit from 2009, but not much.

#1 - Maserati: 180
Year-to-date: 912
This Fiat-connected Ferrari ally has put together a 54% increase in 2010 sales. June 2010 was a 58-sale improvement on June 2009, too, thanks to the beautiful Quattroporte and the GranTurismo familia.

LOW VOLUME AUTOMAKER SALES IN THE USA (JANUARY 2010)

Establish the context first, The Good Car Dad always says. This is the domain of ultra-low volume automakers. For better understanding, take the number 43 into account. That's how many Audi R8s were sold in January in the USA. 67 people bought a Nissan GT-R in January. 503 people took possession of some version of the Porsche 911. (Porsche USA lists 14 unique 911 variants at present).

The best-selling car in America in the first month of 2010 was the Honda Accord. Honda managed to push 20,759 of those. As far as sales of Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Maserati, Maybach, and Rolls-Royce go; their Numbers would be deemed irrelevant if their respective asking prices weren't so high; if their allure wasn't so strong.

And what's Lotus doing in this group, you ask? Supercars, mega-luxury, ultra-luxury, tier two premium, and.... low volume manufacturers fit nicely in this Graph. Low volume means Lotus.

TOP 10 MOST EXPENSIVE SEDANS IN THE WORLD

This is not the domain of America's best-selling car, the Toyota Camry. Other high-volume cars like the Honda Accord and Honda Civic or Hyundai Sonata and Hyundai Elantra, or even the BMW 3-Series for that matter, won't be priced in this neighbourhood until a few decades of inflation have had their way. No, this is where ultra-premium badges come to play. Fighting above their weight class are a few simpletons from the luxury crowd: Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and.... pfft, Porsche. For the most part, automakers represented in the group below are avid promoters of largesse and excess; hedonism and epicureanism; indulgence and opulence.

Two specific cars have been left off this list of the Top 10 Most Expensive Sedans In The World for obvious reasons. The Maybach Landaulet, with its estimated MSRP of $1,380,000, won't be purchased by any sane self-respecting person. It's that ugly. Meanwhile, the Bugatti Galibier 16C, although gorgeous and terribly expensive (likely $1,470,000) is a mite too far from the Marketplace to be included with this bunch of current or near-Future automobiles.

Don't forget about the 5-door capability of two cars in the group below. Perhaps you won't walk in to the country club proclaiming the majesty of your new hatchback, but it's a unique trait nonetheless, one that makes it hard to include the two vehicles in this sedan/saloon list. All prices are in U.S. dollars. Scroll all the way down for the Gallery slideshow.

-----

#10 - PORSCHE PANAMERA TURBO: $132,600
She ain't pretty. But on dynamic talent alone, few if any of the other contenders could stay with the Porsche on a racetrack or even a country road. The Panamera's auto start-stop function must be selected each time you set our for a drive but will shut the engine off automatically when you're stopped at traffic lights and then it'll restart the powerplant just as quickly to save fuel.

#9 - MASERATI QUATTROPORTE GT S: $133,700
Competing for the crown of best-looking car in the world, the Quattroporte has no trouble making the majority of expensive sedans look like poorly drawn boats. Quattroporte owners are also able to point out the origins of their car's engine: Ferrari's factory.

#8 - BMW 760Li: $137,000
With its vastly improved exterior design, the biggest BMW is ready to rein in some Mercedes conquest sales. Though Rolls-Royce won't be keen to declare it, BMW sales consultants will readily claim the 7-Series/Ghost connection. 20% of their parts are shared.

#7 - ASTON MARTIN RAPIDE: $199,950
As the supermodel of the sedan world, Aston Martin's Rapide shares plenty with its brethren. From the grille to the overall proportions, the Rapide is undeniably Aston in every way. Even its doors swing up 12 degrees to provide easier ingress while at the same time avoiding scuffs on the curb.

#6 - MERCEDES-BENZ S65 AMG: $201,150
Not that the regular S-Class variants are weak-kneed or technologically lacking, but AMG's alternative to the S400 Hybrid, S550, and S600 adds more expensive metal and software than you can shake a stick at. Plus, there's 738 lb-ft of torque. Reeesult.

#5 - BENTLEY CONTINENTAL FLYING SPUR SPEED: $202,500
The most expensive edition of the Flying Spur, Bentley's 4-door Speed requires extra horsepower to carry around plenty of weight and plenty of Breitling timing gear. Flying Spurs are also alone in this ten-strong group, powering forward without a V-shaped engine. Continentals all use a twin-turbocharged W-12.

#4 - ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST: $245,000 (est.)
Restrained styling has resulted in a more attractive Rolls-Royce this time around. The Phantom has presence, but the Ghost seems more... appropriate. What's more, this smaller, "cheaper" Ghost is more powerful than its big brother.

#3 - BENTLEY MULSANNE: $295,000 (est.)
Unveiled in Pebble Beach to rave reviews, the biggest, baddest Bentley resurrects the Mulsanne name after a two-decade hiatus. Each Mulsanne will take approximately nine weeks to build from start-to-finish. Apart from the press cars, it's highly unlikely that any two Mulsannes will be same, not with 114 paint colours and 24 leather hides to choose from.

#2 - MAYBACH 57/62: $366,000-$506,500
Certainly the least desirable and least attractive model on this list, the Maybach family (including the more expensive Landaulet and Zeppelin) has not been a roaring success for Daimler AG. That's not to say the cars themselves won't roar. Indeed, only excessive sound-deadining material hushes the twin-turbo V12.

#1 - ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM: $408,000
Reeking of old money and permeated with modern technology, the Phantom is the image-conscious vehicle choice for the extraordinarily wealthy. Even the mega-rich friends of the extraordinarily wealthy are impressed by the gigantic Rolls. Touches include the tucked-away umbrella in the side panel and the Phantom's power reserve meter which takes the place of a traditional tachometer.

FUEL ECONOMY IN CAR AND DRIVER MARCH 2010

Vehicles tested by Car & Driver for their March issue were, for the most part, stunningly quick. Their 0-60 times are posted here. Although some of these automobiles weren't checked for fuel economy results, eight were. From frugal fuel misers to fervid gas guzzlers, the MPG figures presented by a bunch of luxury cars, an SUV, and a German diesel, as listed below, contain some surprises. Click here for the Fuel stats from Car & Driver's February issue.

100 FAVOURITE CARS - PART VII

Count the Kia Soul as one of GoodCarBadCar.net's current favourite cars, certainly. But as far as The Good Car Guy's 100 Favourite Cars of all time, no Kia stood a veritable chance. Every single Hyundai was passed over, as well. GMC? Ignored. Hummer, Isuzu, and Geo make nothing worthy of a list of this magnitude. Fortunately, this leaves plenty of room for high-end machinery. On the opposite end of the Kia Soul's pendulum sits the first vehicle in today's edition of 100 Favourite Cars, cars 61-70.

LAMBORGHINI MURCIELAGO: Exotic cars, the cars you never see in all your life, should look like something you'll never see in all your life. That statement is embodied by the Murcielago.... and its V12 engine.
LANCIA FULVIA COUPE (GEN1): The problem with the Fulvia concept of 2003 wasn't that it lacked design quality. No, the original Fulvia was so simply stunning that a predecessor was bound to disappoint.
LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER (L322): Being labelled as the best vehicle on Earth comes with expectations. Imagine how much stronger those expectations would be if the Range Rover had the potential for reliability.
LEXUS LS400: Acquainting a continent with a new luxury brand and its S-Class/7-Series competitor should be a huge challenge. This car made Lexus the kind of brand that would outsell Benz and BMW in total sales.
LEXUS SC400: The SC400 was and is the only Lexus design Jaguar's Sir William Lyons could ever be proud of. Long, low, and wide; the original V8-engined SC was high-value luxury and pace. With space and grace.
LINCOLN CONTINENTAL ('64): Only a few years after the loopy Cadillac Eldorado, Lincoln adopted an understated art deco feel for the Conti and wowed everyone.
LOTUS 340R: Because the Elise wasn't completely stripped to the bone, Lotus felt another step was necessary. Behold, a true bare-bones Lotus.
LOTUS ELAN ('62): Tiny in every dimension, the Elan's best quality was "less". Though likely not a star in modern crash test safety, the Elan is the vehicular equivalent of an Olympic triathlete; a lean and lithe multi-faceted athlete.
MASERATI 3200GT: "Rediscovering mojo", aka "getting groove on for another run at life", is difficult. For an automaker to do so, a 3200GTesque vehicle is a big help.
MASERATI QUATTROPORTE (V): New Subaru Legacy commercials mock the "sedan" - the Accord, Camry, Fusion group - while trying to sell you... a sedan. The Quattroporte puts the words "four" and "door" in its name and will never be taunted. Nay, never.

FUEL ECONOMY IN CAR AND DRIVER NOVEMBER 2009

Every month almost every car tested by Car & Driver isn't just measured for decibels at full throttle or the time required to travel from 50-70mph in top gear. Most cars are also tested for fuel economy. Are the EPA's numbers not trusted? Not exactly. The EPA's numbers are a lot more accurate than they once were; but real-world driving tells a real-world story.

In the new November issue, pay particular attention to the merits of the good ol' fashioned American V8s of the Corvette and Shelby GT500 Mustang. Although the Mustang accelerates more quickly than Audi's S4; weighs just about as much as the Audi; and puts out an extra 207 horsepower and 185 lb-ft more torque, the Ford V8 returns better economy. And though every car tested this month was particularly hefty and/or wildly sporty, is it not still a wonder that the quickest car was also the most fuel efficient? Head past the jump for details.

Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport: 21 miles per gallon
Audi Q7 3.0 TDI: 21 miles per gallon
Nissan 370Z Roadster Touring: 21 miles per gallon
Jaguar XF S'Charged *: 20 miles per gallon
Ford Shelby GT500: 18 miles per gallon
Maserati Quattroporte S *: 18 miles per gallon
BMW 335i: 18 miles per gallon
Audi S4: 17 miles per gallon
Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon 3.6 *: 16 miles per gallon
Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe *: 12 miles per gallon

FACT CHECK (WITH PICS) OF THE NEW MASERATI GRANCABRIO

It has been pointed out that we ought not believe everything we read. They say it's important to analyse the text before accepting it as truth. Considering the skeptical nature of most automotive critics, it won't surprise you to discover that The Good Car Guy is labelling Maserati's latest profound statement as false.

Says Fiat-controlled Maserati, in regards to their latest product, the GranCabrio: "The Maserati GranCabrio is powered by a 4.7 litre V8, 438 bhp engine and is the convertible with the longest wheelbase on the market."

Hmm, wait one second. "The market" can mean just about anything anybody wants it to, but if it includes every production car, the length between the GranTurismo's wheelhubs must grow by an astonishing 15 inches to accomodate four seats under the soft top of the GranCabrio to overtake the wheelbase of the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead. Another 20 inch stretch would be required to overtake the pseudo-convertible of Maybach's, the Landaulet.

Does the new Maserati GranCabrio feature the longest wheelbase of any convertible on the market? No. But it's long, low, and lean physique does make for a beautiful vehicle. Check the pics for proof and have a look at other Galleries by clicking here.

FUTURE EUROPEAN AUTO INDUSTRY

With news that Porsche has eventually succeeded in wresting victory from the jaws of defeat (otherwise known as the state of Lower Saxony), the future of the European automotive industry is.... confusing. In ultra-simplistic visual form, the images below show the Porsche group with Volkswagen and its underlings as well as a possible Fiat group, with the GM Europe additions and Chrysler LLC group, too.

FIAT WANTS MORE THAN CHRYSLER - GM EUROPE'S VAUXHALL, OPEL & SAAB TOO

Quick alert for early morning readers. It's becoming more than just rumour and innuendo. Fiat wants to grab hold of more than just Chrysler LLC. General Motors Europe-based brands are also now part of a future Fiat conglomerate. In other words, Fiat wants to become the GM of yesteryear.

Mergers and acquisitions like this would make Fiat gigantic. Brands under the umbrella would include, in one form or another: Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati, Ferrari, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Opel, Vauxhall, and Saab. Fiat is already big in commercial vehicles with names like Iveco likely meaning something to you. Fiat used to play around with Piaggio and Vespa scooters, too. Famed ski resort Sestriere is an Agnelli family stronghold. Various ventures nd tie-ups help Fiat make an indelliblible mark in wildly varying segments of the economy all over the world.

But a Fiat that includes brands like Saab and Chrysler? This'll be news worth watching. Catch the CNN story here.

ALFA ROMEO AND MASERATI MAKE AN APPEARANCE ON THE NHTSA RECALL LIST FOR INCORRECT TORQUE

For the first time in a long time, a brand new Alfa Romeo has appeared in the NHTSA (an American governmental organization, remember) Recall database. This is both a good sign and a bad omen. For one thing, it signifies that: yes, Alfa is back. Yeehaw. On the other hand, or perhaps the same hand, it also means that Alfa is back and is ready to be brought back into the garage.

Due to NHTSA's lack of true oil-in-the-veins car guys and gals, auto writers like The Good Car Guy are forced to make educated guesses. See, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published notice of this here Recall that includes, according to NHTSA, the Maserati Quattroportes from MY2005, the Maserati Quattroporte from MY2006-2008, the Maserati GranTurismo from '08, and the Maserati Alfa Romeo from 2008.

So that'd be the plurally named Maserati from '05 - didn't know they made the Quattroportes - and the Fiat-connected Maserati Alfa Romeo. Having analyzed this information, it is the belief of The Good Car Guy that NHTSA is referring to the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione that's sold through Maserati dealerships (Fiat owns/runs Maserati, Alfa, Lancia, and kind of Ferrari) and clearly imported by Maserati. Overall 7,912 cars are involved in the Recall.

What's the problem? "Incorrectly torqued upper and lower ball joint nuts may cause the ball joint nuts to loosen", which over time, "could lead to noise, vibration, and damage or separtion of the suspension arm." As NHTSA so capably points out, that increases the risk of a crash.

Wanna check this out with Maserati/Alfa Romeo? 1-201-826-2600. That's gotta be one of the first NHTSA-provided manufacturer phone numbers I've typed that doesn't appear to be toll free. If you're driving one of those cars, it sounds as though you can afford to make the call. By the way, the pic is of the Maserati Quattroporte from MY2008, not the Quattroportes from '05.

CNN LOOKS AT 'SLOWDOWN' AMONG SUPERLUXURY AUTOMAKERS

Jim Boulden, a European correspondent for CNN, visited the Paris auto show to talk with quite a number of big shots from big-shot automobile manufacturers. The video embedded below shows brief clips from the following individuals: Stuart McCullough from Bentley talking about the negativity of the current worldwide economic solution; Ulrich Bez from Aston Martin discussing Aston's current success; Stephan Winkelmann from Lamborghini explains Lamborghini's supply-and-demand philosophy; David Archibald from Rolls-Royce tells Boulden about the Rollers's appeal around the globe helping out; and Luca dal Monte from Maserati talks about Maserati's extreme growth and optimism.

2009 MASERATI QUATTROPORTE AVAILABLE WITH 4.7L V8

Named by The Good Car Guy as the third-best looking car for the company CEO in a GCBC Top 5, the Maserati Quattroporte is being upgraded.

Two new leather options replace beige: Marrone Corniola and Sabbia. The new grille is more GranTurismoesque. LEDs are present at both the front and rear. A new centre console ought to be more ergnomic and the new Maserati Multimedia System incorporates a new (and one would hope, incredibly improved) navigation system.

But you kind of don't really actually truly care at all. The Q'Porte S is now fitted with a 4.7L V8 generating 430 horsepower, a pleasant bump over the standard and significantly less torquey 400-bhp 4.2L V8. The gallery for the 2009 Maser Q'Porte is below.

CAR with the 8c, 430 Scuderia & Maser GT to Monaco

CAR magazine, a less performance-oriented car mag than you'd wish it to be but still full of great features and opinion, had the privilege of driving an incredible selection of Italian V8 two-doors. One of the world's most beautiful - Alfa Romeo's 8c Competizione. One of the world's highest-performing production cars - Ferrari's 430 Scuderia. And, the least expensive way to find most of that beauty and plenty of that performance - Maserati's GranTurismo.

Ironically, three of Italy's great and historic brands are wrapped up under the Fiat Group, and all three of these cars share basic V8 architecture, with engine capacity varying between 4.2L in the Maser to 4.7L in the Alfa. The Ferrari's 4.3L is the highest-strung, and wound very tight indeed.

Enjoy the scenery.

TOP 5 - CARS FOR MAFIA DONS & YAKUZA KUMICHOS

The Good Car brother-in-law has a terrific Slovak accent. During a phone conversation the other day, he asked what I was calling for. I joked and said money. He proceeded to tell me that I ought to head to The Thirsty Duck, ask for Vladimir and tell him Frankie sent me. "He'll give you whatever you need."

This was all a joke, remember. But the accent, the hairless round head.... he could pull it off. And were he to pull off the complete Russian Mafia routine, what would he drive? (Likely not a Chevrolet Venture.) On the other hand, at a recent wedding of which I was a part, two well-off guests came all the way from Long Island. One joke during the open-mic session involved the phrase, "Did you see this couple from Long Island, looking straight out of the Mob?"

So I took a look, and.... yeah. If the guy really was a Jersey mobster, what would he drive? Time to get to work on the Top 5 cars for Mafia Dons & Yakuza Kumichos, I realized. Here they are.

BIG AND BLACK MERCEDES FOR THE RUSSIAN MAFIA: Seeing as how all five groups within this piece have an image to uphold, the car must suit that image to a T. Cold, sterile, precise, and possessing great inherent strength - well that'd be an old Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman and all of its six doors. Leonid Brezhnev was the Communist Party's First Secretary in 1972, while Russia played eight famous hockey games against Canada, and this car was nearing its production end with a healthy 300 horsepower and over 400 lb-ft of torque.

It sucked fuel like a modern Chevrolet Suburban. It also weighed a hefty 6000 pounds before the necessary body armor, cost a then-hefty $38,000. Other black Benz's would do, but a Pullman from this era shows the excess and grandeur of new Russia while mixing in the Russian Mafia's suspicious past.

CADILLAC ESCALADE FOR THE JERSEY MOBSTER: This time, it has to be new. Tired and scarred 'Slade's would forever tarnish the image of anybody named Tony. The true waste-disposal family would need a three car garage equipped with the standard Escalade, the Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT. Sometimes you need a little more space in the rear for passengers and sometimes you need a little open-air space in the rear for...ummm, waste. An Escalade always has plenty of power on tap, 403 horses in fact. Those horses derive from a 6.2L V8, 417 lb-ft of low-down stump pulling torque. And it even runs on regular gas. Hey, were business to face a down-turn, those gas savings may come in handy.

CHRYLSER 300C SRT-8 FOR THE IRISH MOB: Are the wheels too big? Tone it down, the regular 300C still has the Hemi V8 but is a degree lower on the conspicuous consumption meter. After all, the Irish boys have infiltrated many'a city's underworld, and their otherwise normal appearance can't be thrown so far off by a car that looks like it costs $75K, even if the price barely jumps above $40,000 USD. That's the beauty of the big Chrysler - it gives everybody the gangsta look while offering an everyman/everycar experience. Spacious? Check. Quick? 425 bhp quick. Can it pull off heavy tint? For sure.

SICILIAN COSA NOSTRA IS DEFINED BY A MASERATI QUATTROPORTE: Maserati has finally decided to offer a transmission smooth enough for limo-duty. The previous 6-speed automated manual was suitable for the Ferrari's it was formerly used in, but any large luxury car without a proper 6-speed automatic is too brutal for work in careers that thrive on smooth, unfussed style. Besides, Sicily (or anybody from Sicily) requires a car that can match the beauty through which it will drive. Rolling roads around Corleone can be enjoyed on stressless days in a sports sedan like the Q'porte. Faster around a racetrack than many a hi-po sports sedan, the 4,400 lb Maserati can still hold almost 16 cubic feet of 'cargo'.

YAKUZA IN A MERCEDES-BENZ S-CLASS, AS ALWAYS
: From shateigashira to kumicho and even the fuku-honbucho in between, the Yakuza hold no surprises to the people of Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Yokahama. One such Yakuza trait that holds no surprise is their vehicle of choice, so expect no oyabun to check GCBC for car-buying advice. S-class Mercedes from a various generations suit the Yakuza just fine, so long as they come painted black. Differentiation lies ahead of the passenger compartment. V8? Big V8? Twin-turbo V12 with over 600 getaway horsepower? Import a diesel, maybe even a diesel V8? Just make sure the windows are heavily darkened. Yakuza offices are sometimes marked as clearly as their automobile, which is as clearly defined as the members themselves. Walk uniquely, eyes always covered, dressed permanently in suits. The decision to transport themselves in such a vast fleet of Mercedes' flagship sedan is perhaps the best choice the Yakuza has ever made.
