February 2013 Commercial Van Sales In Canada

Canada commercial van sales chart February 2013
Click Chart For Larger View
1824 new commercial vans were registered in Canada in February 2013, a 4.1% decline compared with February of last year.

The least conventional members of the group - a small Ford, big Benz, and the odd duck Nissan - all generated year-over-year improvements.

Detroit's stalwarts, however, sold much less often this February than last. Ford's Transit Connect now trails its big brother, the E-Series, by just 43 units going into March. It outsold the E-Series by 38 units in February. Canada's overall new vehicle market slid 3.3% last month. Pickup truck sales rose 1.1%.

Commercial vans, some of which might be used to ferry passengers around, found 1722 buyers in January 2013. There was a great deal of parity in the market. Of the top five vans in the seven-van segment, none managed more than 24% market share; none worse than 12.3%. Only the Nissan NV and Ram Cargo Van existed as low-volume players.

NV sales rose 44% to 88. Ram C/V sales fell 90% from 475 (in its best month so far) to just 50 units in January 2013. The class-leading Ford E-Series was up 3%. Ford's other commercial-oriented van, the Transit Connect, posted a 184% improvement.

Meanwhile, Canadians purchased or leased 5694 minivans in January, a figure which includes 993 truly mini minivans.

Canadian businesses and individuals registered 30,456 commercial vans in 2012. The two best sellers, both Fords, accounted for 47.5% of the commercial-oriented market. For perspective, consider the number of F-Series pickups Ford sold in 2012: a record-setting 106,358

December was a month of many declines in the commercial van category, as only two vehicles - the Ford Transit Connect and GMC Savana - posted year-over-year increases. Compared with 2011, however, 2012 was a terrific year for commercial vans. As a whole, the segment recorded a 14.2% year-over-year increase, significantly better than the overall market's 5.7% improvement.

December 2012 Commercial
Van Sales Chart
In 2011, Ram only sold the Cargo Van for five months. The year-over-year comparison thus shows twelve months of 2012 sales, 2159 in total, against 432 in 2011. Nissan NV sales jumped 92% - Nissan Canada only sold NVs in the final three quarters of 2011, skewing that year-over-year figure. But sales of other commercial vans, aging vans at that, were up in 2012. Even the GMC Savana, a twin of the more common Chevrolet Express, rose by seven units.

As always, you can find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for these vans and any other vehicle by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats home or by clicking the model name in the table below. November 2012 Commercial Van Sales In Canada

Canada November 2012 commercial van sales chart
Click Chart For Larger View
Canadian business (and maybe even a few families) registered 2549 cargo and personnel-carrying vans in November 2012, a huge 45.7% improvement compared with November 2011. This all occurred despite the fact that the best-selling commercial van, Ford's soon-departing E-Series, slid 24% on a year-over-year basis.

GM's twin vans took over as the two best sellers, Ford's Transit Connect came within twelve sales of overtaking the E-Series, and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter's leap brought the German within 43 sales of tying the usual top-selling Ford.

Through the first eleven months of 2012, the Ram Cargo Van is Chrysler Canada's 16th-best-selling model. The NV ranks eleventh among Nissan brand vehicles, ahead of the Xterra, Quest, Armada, 370Z, Cube, Leaf, and GT-R (in that order). The Sprinter sells more often than all but four Benz model ranges. Among the whole Ford Motor Company, the E-Series ranks eighth in volume; the Transit Connect eleventh, ahead of the Flex, Expedition, and every Lincoln. Meanwhile at General Motors, the Express generates greater volume than all but eleven models; the Savana is 13th, right behind the GMc Acadia.

As always, you can click any model name in the tables visible after the jump to see historical monthly and yearly sales figures. Or you can select any make or model at GCBC's Sales Stats home. Any vehicle you can't find tabled here will be listed elsewhere - you can select from segments like minivans and pickup trucks at GCBC's The Tally page.

October 2012 Canada Commercial Van Sales

Commercial van sales chart Canada October 2012
Click Chart For Larger View
As a group, commercial vans were responsible for just 1.3% of Canada's overall new vehicle market in October 2012. Year-to-date, the same seven vans account for 1.8% of the 1.44 million new vehicles sold in Canada.

The rough October had plenty to do with the segment's two most popular models, both of which are Fords. E-Series sales slid 5.5%, or 26 units. The Transit Connect was down 23%, equal to 92 units.

Here's hoping that Ford begins listing the it's-not-a-minivan-but-well-it-is-kind-of-a-minivan 2014 Ford Transit Connect Wagon separately from the Transit Connect when it goes on sale later next year. For now, a Transit Connect Wagon is a rare item indeed, and sales of any passenger version of any of these vans is included in these totals. The interior of the 2014 passenger van is pictured above.

September 2012 Commercial Van Sales In Canada

September 2012 canada commercial van sales chart

Canadian consumers and businesses acquired 2415 commercial-oriented vans in September 2012. Just under half of them were Fords. The Transit Connect was the segment's top seller in its best Canadian sales month yet, beating the next-best-selling van, Ford's own E-Series, by 77 units.

At least in Canada, the segment is quickly becoming very competitive. Even the sixth-ranked Ram Cargo Van grabbed 8.5% of the market in September. Only the Nissan NV comes across as too weak in terms of total volume and market share, grabbing only 3.4% of September's commercial van industry.

August 2012 Commercial Van Sales In Canada

2013 Chevrolet Traverse
Seemingly Mainstream, The Chevrolet Traverse Hasn't
Sold Nearly As Often As The Chevrolet Express In 2012
Crazy as it may sound, at this time last year Ford Canada had just finished August having sold more Transit Connects than E-Series vans. I know, eh? Like, it's just like so crazy and stuff.

Okay, so the commercial van segment isn't the most exciting subject matter we endeavour to explore in GCBC's monthly auto sales recaps. But it is important. Cargo vans (and the RVs and personal transporters into which they're sometimes converted) are profit hogs. They're simple and cheap to assemble, require very few build combinations, and don't come under the same level of scrutiny as Camrys and Civics. Seriously, there are exposed welds everywhere.

Canada August 2012 cargo van sales chart
Yet if they don't sell for 911 GT2-like prices, how do they deliver so much cash to company coffers? They sell in numbers, large numbers. 2500 of these vans were driven home, or rather, to work in August 2012. The most popular Ford E-Series sold more often than the Fiat 500; almost as often as the Volkswagen Passat. The Chevrolet Express sold twice as often as the Chevrolet Traverse, more than twice as often as the Chevrolet Camaro, and nearly five times as frequently as the Chevrolet Volt.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all seven of these vans can always be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or, for non-mobile users, near the top right of this page. Or you can just click the model in the table below. The accompanying chart, which you can click for a larger view, ranks the vans by August volume.

July 2012 Commercial Van Sales In Canada

Old and new Mercedes-Benz Sprinters
56.3% of Canada's commercial/cargo/full-size people-carrying vehicle market in July 2012 was owned by FoMoCo. With E-Series sales rising 53% and the Transit Connect ranked as the second-best-selling vehicle in the segment, one almost wonders why other automakers participate.

Canada July 2012 Commercial van sales chart
Click This Van Sales Chart For A Larger View
And then one remembers that automobile manufacturers are in business to make money. Is it hard for Chrysler to develop the Ram Cargo Van? Er... no. It's a Dodge Grand Caravan, Canada's fourth-best-selling vehicle overall, with seats and rear glass removed. Ce n'est pas très difficile.

Before July, Ford hasn't encountered a year-over-year decline in Transit Connect sales since February. Judging popularity based on figures such as these would be a mistake. Orders for vans such as these can come in clumps from a small number of sources. Perhaps Canada Post wasn't interested in purchasing more in July. Perhaps they purchased extra in June. Who knows?

Who cares? Well, some people care. And it's for those people that this post was created. There's plenty more in Canada's July 2012 auto sales recap here on GoodCarBadCar. And there's more on these vans, too. Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all seven of these commercial vans can be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or near the top right of this page.
