Minivan Sales And Muscle Cars In Canada - September 2010

In the more price-sensitive Canadian market, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro doesn't appear likely to challenge the on-sale-now 2011 Ford Mustang for muscle car sales supremacy. Unlike in the United States, where the Camaro seems to have locked up the title for 2010's best-selling muscle car/pony car with an apparently insurmountable lead, Canadian buyers spread their love to the less-expensive Ford. The 2011 Ford Mustang has a base price of $22,999. The 2011 Chevrolet Camaro has a base price of $26,995. The 2010 Dodge Challenger, by the way, currently starts at $25,995.

It happens to be The Good Car Guy's opinion that, in this segment at least, the least-expensive model is also the most appealing. The same can't be necessarily be said of maximinivans. The Dodge Grand Caravan is.... alright. What you really want, however, is a 2011 Toyota Sienna, the Swagger Wagon. In Canada, the Sienna and just-coming-on-stream 2011 Honda Odyssey will be fighting for second place for the foreseeable future. Grand Caravan sales, even without the Chrysler Town & Country, were still 4232 units strong in September. As it stood at the end of September 2010, the Toyota Sienna was leading the outgoing Honda Odyssey model by about 1800 sales.

In the mostly-separate Mazda 5 vs Kia Rondo sales battle, the Mazda (which also happens to be ahead of the Honda Odyssey year-to-date) leads the Rondo by over 500 sales through the end of September.

Minivan Sales & Muscle Car Sales In America - September 2010

U.S. sales of the Chevrolet Camaro fell 20.6% in September 2010 even as sales of the 2011 Ford Mustang increased 17.1%. Problem for Ford was that Mustang sales in September 2009 weren't all that hot while 2010 Chevrolet Camaro sales in September 2009 were smokin'. Camaro sales, thus, fell from a very high level. Mustang sales rose, yes, but from not so high a place. Put simply, the Camaro beat the Mustang in September 2010. Moreover, the Camaro's lead over the Mustang through the first three-quarters of 2010 is 7654 units. You can bet that General Motors will be talking about their muscle car sales victory in January 2011.

Of note, Dodge Challenger sales are up 47% this year. There's talk of a new Dodge Viper being Alfa Romeo 8C-based, a theory which didn't hurt sales of the current Viper in September; up 158%. Declining sales (-30% in September 2010) of the far more popular Chevrolet Corvette aren't surprising to anyone who's been following the Corvette trend in 2010.

Boring ol' minivans are where higher volumes are found. Every van in the Graph below posted substantial increases over September 2009's figures, not a difficult task for the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan. September '09 wasn't friendly to those twins. Going unmentioned in the Minivan Sales chart are the Kia Rondo (111 sales), Nissan Quest (4 sales) and vans like the Ford Transit Connect, Ford E-Series, Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Together, 19,002 of these commercial-oriented vans were sold in September 2010.

Minivan Sales And Muscle Car Sales In Canada - August 2010

The Kia Rondo's struggles in the United States that Kia's given up on their miniature minivan in the American market. But minivan market share in Canada leans favourably in the Kia Rondo's direction. Through eight months of 2010, the Kia Rondo is only 321 unites behind the Mazda 5, but the trend line is sliding toward Kia. The Rondo beat the 5 in July after coming close in June and being slaughtered in May. It'll be a fight to the finish.

Further up the minivan scale, the Dodge Grand Caravan (and slow-selling Chrysler Town & Country) nearly out-sell all other minivans combined. If the Chrysler/Dodge duo's sales hadn't slid 23.1%, the two would have carved out a slice greater than half the pie. Both the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna posted huge improvements over August 2009's totals.

In the more exciting but less conspicuous muscle car segment, the Ford Mustang laid a beatdown on the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger in Canada in August 2010. Now that the 2011 Ford Mustang is fully on-stream at Ford Canada's dealerships, the Camaro has a much tougher fight on its hands. Chevrolet sold 44 fewer Camaros in Canada last month than in the same period of 2009; Ford Mustang sales jumped 17.2%. The Chevrolet Corvette and Dodge's Viper and Challenger all posted gains in August, as well.

Minivan Sales And Muscle Car Sales In America - August 2010

Apart from strong performances by American automobile manufacturers, what do muscle cars and minivans have in common?

Basically nothing, which is why The Good Car Guy throws their Graphs together each month. For contrast's sake. If you think the Chevrolet Camaro (muscle car victor in August after a lull) and 2011 Ford Mustang are protected from embarrassment by being joined together with low-volume American machinery like the Corvette and Viper, think again. Later on, you'll see a Graph in which the Nissan 370Z and Volkswagen GTI and Mitsubishi Eclipse all display their own low-volume status. In 2010, the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro are big time earners for Ford Motor Company and General Motors.

As far as minivans go, the 2011 Honda Odyssey could shake things up a bit in the coming months, but for now, there's no exception to the general rule that says, "Chrysler first; everyone else follow the leader". That said, sales of the current 2010 Honda Odyssey, Toyota's Swagger Wagon Sienna, Kia Sedona, and the Chryler Town & Country are all up compared with August 2009. Mazda 5 sales fell 40% in August. Kia has cancelled the Rondo and sales in August (94) were so low the Rondo didn't earn a spot in the Minivan Sales Graph. North of the border, Canadians eat the Rondo up

MINIVAN SALES AND MUSCLE CAR SALES IN CANADA - JULY 2010

For the vast majority of automakers, victory isn't everything. Being able to say, "We sold the most _____", doesn't feel quite as good as making trunkloads of money. Don't worry your pretty little head off - Dodge will forever be inclined to proclaim the Grand Caravan as Canada's best-selling minivan. But take into consideration the percentage of 2010 Dodge Grand Caravans which were sold to fleets (likely at no profit to Chrysler) and the rest which went to regular consumers with around $7,000 in incentives, and you begin to see Honda's contentedness.

See, every time Honda sold an Odyssey in Canada in July 2010, Chrysler/Dodge sold five minivans and 65% of the sixth van was out the door. But while the base price of a Dodge Grand Caravan had plummeted to $20,945, the $31,690 Odyssey wasn't likely much cheaper than $26,000.

You might also be interested to know about a few minivan competitors not in this Graph because, well, they ain't minivans. Toyota Venza sales were 1,045 in July. 464 units of the Ford Flex were sold in Canada in July. Dodge Journey sales reached 2,268.

As for muscle car sales in Canada, only the best-selling 2011 Ford Mustang posted a decline in sales compared with July 2009. Camaro sales shot up 49%; Mustang sales fell from 898 to 880.

U.S. SALES OF MINIVANS AND MUSCLE CARS - JULY 2010

My, how the tide has turned. Not long ago, General Motors gave up the minivan fight - a fight it had long since lost to Chrysler and Dodge - and refocussed on muscle car wars, a war it had surrendered to Ford about a decade prior.

Ford, on the other hand, has revitalized its muscle car, the iconic Mustang, while turning out its van engineers to work on on the Transit Connect, a tasty little commercial thang. Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro sales, enarly equal in America in July 2010, are about as strong as a moderately successful minivan.

Chrysler's muscle car, the 300-based Dodge Challenger, is nowhere near as popular in the United States, but Chrysler has the benefit of building the planet's most popular minivans. The Chrysler Town & Country and the Dodge Caravan are being vociferously challenged by the 2011 Toyota Sienna, and an all-new Odyssey may strengthen Honda's position on the lower Graph as well. Details on July 2010 sales of minivans and muscle cars in the USA are found below.

MINIVAN SALES AND MUSCLE CAR SALES IN CANADA - JUNE 2010

honda odyssey
There are tens of thousands of casual auto industry observers (and experienced automotive critics, too) who are under the strong impression that price is not part of a vehicle buyer's decision making. They're completely right.... at least when discussing certain vehicle segments. Price is irrelevant to the buyer who can't decide between the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Lamborghini Gallardo. Price may only be partially relevant to the loyal Michigander whose truck lease is about to expire. But when it comes to the buyers of minivans in the great nation of Canada, price matters.

Chrysler sells minivans with two different names in Canada. First, there's the slow-selling Chrysler Town & Country, just 449 sales in June. It's at least the Dodge Grand Caravan's equal in the States, but the Grand Caravan is Canada's favourite. Combined, their June 2010 sales were worth more than half of the minivan pie. As of this moment, Dodge.ca lists the Grand Caravan's base price at $20,945. Few would argue that the Honda Odyssey isn't the better van, but Odysseys start at $31,690. The Odyssey was Canada's fifth-best-selling minivan in June 2010. The four which sold more all have a lower base price.

Muscle cars tell a slightly different story. Only slightly. Now that the 2011 Ford Mustang is on stream, its fast and cheap V6 versions are attracting consumers faster than Chapmans Li'l Treats on a hot summer's day. It doesn't hurt that the Mustang 5.0 GT is a fair deal, too. Or that the Chevrolet Camaro costs more.

CANADIAN SALES OF MINIVANS AND MUSCLE CARS - MAY 2010

mazda 5
Minivans and muscle cars, the bane and dream of the every man. You're the rational man, but a man whose image must be beautifully garnished. So the Dodge Grand Caravan sits in your driveway with a 2011 Ford Mustang GT 5.0. Or perhaps it's a Mazda 5 with a Dodge Challenger, or a Toyota Sienna with a Chevrolet Camaro.

Who'm I kidding? This is a Sales Stats post, a place for realists; not dreamers. For convenience, Graphs are being combined over the summer months because The Good Car Guy needs to play more frisbee and spend more time at the beach. Forgiveness, please.

Keep in mind, these sales figures for minivans and muscle cars like the Camaro and Mustang reach all the way back to May. (Data was late arriving. Forgiveness. Please.) The impact of Swagger Wagon ads may not have been fully felt. On the other hand, Canadians love to buy automotive products a size below their American counterparts, so the Mazda 5's success shouldn't surprise. Ford's newly-found wild popularity in Canada gels nicely with the Mustang's huge lead over the Chevrolet Camaro, too. Year-to-date, however, the Camaro was out in front by 274 units as of May 31st.

U.S. SALES OF MUSCLE CARS, SPORTS CARS, AND PREMIUM SPORTS CARS - JUNE 2010

Let's sum this up quickly, shall we? Who doesn't want a 2011 Ford Mustang or 2010 Chevrolet Camaro? I don't see any hands raised.

Combined sales of the itty-bitty German sportsters - the Audi TT, BMW Z4 Mercedes-Benz SLK, Porsche Boxster, and Porsche Cayman - can't measure up to sales of the Audi A5. In A5 or S5 guise, coupe or convertible, this hefty Audi coupe is attracting buyers like moths to midnight light.

Talk up its opponents if you will, but every month The Good Car Guy is forced to declare victory for the Porsche 911. With about 1,434 varities available, the Porsche 911 was more than six times more popular than the vaunted Nissan GT-R in June 2010.

AMERICAN MUSCLE CAR SALES IN THE USA - MAY 2010

ford mustang
For the first time in what seems like forever and a day, the Ford Mustang beat the Chevrolet Camaro in monthly sales. More than half the Mustangs sold in America in May were of the 2011 variety; substantially more powerful than their 2010 brethren. Ford was making substantially more money off the 2011s, too, with lower incentives and higher interest rates.

Nevertheless, Camaro sales remained tremendously strong. One wouldn't have thought Chevrolet planted the Camaro in such fertile ground, but sales have reached 38,838 through the first five months of 2010. We've also reached a time when Camaro sales can be compared with the same period of the previous year. In that light, Chevrolet Camaro sales climbed 63.5% from May 2009.

And the others? Chevrolet Corvette sales fell 13.1% in May. Dodge Viper sales fell 41% while Challenger volume rose 42%.

AMERICAN MUSCLE CAR SALES IN CANADA - APRIL 2010

dodge challenger
Although the stage has been set for Chevrolet Camaro domination in this category for months now, April's Canadian Sales Stats revealed that the Dodge Challenger didn't get along with the set designers. Perhaps incentives helped, perhaps it's Canada's fondness for Chrysler products, perhaps potential Mustang owners are waiting for an influx of hi-po 2011 Ford Mustangs. Whatever it is, the Dodge Challenger sold better than both the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang in April.

Indeed, Ford Mustang sales were down from 641 last April. The Camaro, of course, was brand new to the market last year at this time. Dodge Viper sales, for what it's worth, fell 83.3%. Back at Chevrolet, sales of the Corvette were up nearly 50% from April of 2009.

U.S. AMERICAN MUSCLE CAR SALES - APRIL 2010

Time was GoodCarBadCar.net regularly posted the results of American muscle car sales on a monthly basis. As the site moves towards becoming the web location for auto Sales Stats, it's obvious that the thriving segment must make its return.

Were it not for the Chevrolet Corvette and Dodge Viper in the Graph below, it might be okay to call this the Pony Car Sales article. Perhaps the term, "sports car" would be more apt if each vehicle was well-suited to the racetrack. One can't deny, however, that each contender generates significant muscle, is all-American, and is also a car. Thus, we have the American Muscle Car Sales Graph featuring the indubitable Ford Mustang, the indefatigable Chevrolet Corvette, the sometimes impressive Dodge Challenger, the always aggressive Chevrolet Camaro, and the virile Dodge Viper. The Sales Stats posted today reflect sales of these vehicles in the USA for the month of April 2010.

2009 SALES - CAMARO vs. MUSTANG vs. CHALLENGER vs. CORVETTE vs. VIPER

With only three-quarters of the year under its belt, the Chevrolet Camaro wasn't able to topple the Ford Mustang off the highest perch of the muscle car podium in 2009. If Camaro sales momentum continues, Chevy will have no trouble beating the Mustang next year. It's hard to predict how many more people want the newest, most stylish example of the breed; especially with a stronger V6 and V8 heading the Mustang's way.

As you can see in December's Sales Stats, the Camaro had no trouble seeing off the Mustang and Dodge Challenger in U.S. sales. The Ford, however, had the full calendar year on its side. Check the Graph below for details on sales of America's five domestic "sports cars" and find more 2009 Year End sales info here.
