June 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In Canada

2013 Hyundai Elantra GT sedan and coupe
Still-rising sales of the Chrysler 200 were strong enough to keep the BMW 3-Series, Kia Optima, and Kia Rio at bay in June 2012. Tied at 1241 units in June, the 3-Series and Optima finished just six sales off the 20th best-selling car's pace last month. Kia sold 1199 Rios, up 69% from June 2011.

That's the behind the scenes story. Centre stage, the Honda Civic was easily Canada's best-selling car in June 2012 as the Hyundai Elantra tailed off with falling Touring sales in advance of the GT's arrival. Hyundai Canada actually sold more Elantra sedans than at any other time in the car's history, but Touring sales dropped 31% to 1022.

After the six leading compact cars are out of the way, the subcompact (yet awfully roomy) Hyundai Accent sits in seventh, the almost-considered-a-midsize Volkswagen Jetta in eighth, the surprising Ford Fiesta in ninth, and finally a midsize car - the Toyota Camry - in tenth. The Camry expanded its year-to-date lead over its closest midsize rival to 1499 units.

Canada's new vehicle market improved by a small 3% margin in June. Sales rose 7.1% in the first half of 2012. Quite clearly Canada's best-selling car, the Civic, is a large contributor to that growth. At this point last year Honda Canada had sold 5786 fewer Civics. So important a part of Canada's auto market the Civic is that without its 22% year-over-year increase, the Canadian auto industry would have collectively grown 6.4%, not 7.1%, in the first six months of 2012.

Over the course of the next few hours GoodCarBadCar will be finalizing June 2012 updates in the searchable database of historical monthly and yearly sales data. You can access those sales figures - which are available for every model currently on sale - through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or near the top right of this page.

Below you'll find the top 20 best-selling cars in Canada from June 2012. Last month's edition can be analyzed here. We'll shortly publish best-selling SUV and best-selling truck lists, as well.

Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In Canada - May 2012

2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe Red
2011's second-best-selling midsize car in Canada, the Hyundai Sonata, was not one of Canada's 20 best-selling cars in May 2012. Sonata sales plunged 31% in May, and a surging Ford Taurus joined this best sellers list in the Sonata's place. Year-to-date, Hyundai Canada has sold 6999 Sonatas, a higher January-through-May total than that which was achieved by nine of the cars on this 20 best-selling cars list.

May 2012 was yet another very high-volume Canadian sales month for the Honda Civic. Year-over-year sales jumped 41%. Compared with April, sales rose 6%. Canada's best-selling car beat its nearest rival, the Hyundai Elantra, by 1736 units. Elantra sales slid 4%. Sales would have needed to rise about 33% in order to overcome the rising Civic. Sales of the Elantra sedan are up 15% this year; Elantra Touring sales are down 12; and Hyundai Canada's press release says they sold a single Elantra Coupe in May. That car isn't yet featured on the company's website.

Eight different brands featured in May's top 10: three Japanese automakers, three Detroit brands, plus Hyundai and Volkswagen. The Chrysler 200 was the best-selling midsize car in Canada in May 2012, beating out the Toyota Camry by 65 units. The Camry's lead over the Chrysler through five months remains secure at about 1400 sales.

385 of the Camrys sold in Canada in May 2012 were hybrids. 274 of the Chrysler 200s sold in Canada in May 2012 were convertibles. Based on Hyundai's cryptic statements regarding sales of their most fuel-efficient vehicles, it sounds as though 115 Sonata Hybrids were sold in May. Toyota sold 1212 copies of three different Prius variants, the best-selling of which was the Prius V.

You can access historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these models and every other automobile currently on sale in Canada through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page or at GoodCarBadCar's Sales Stats home. A handful of pertinent links are clickable at the end of this post. The 20 best-selling cars in Canada from May 2012 have been posted in the table below.

Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In Canada - April 2012

2012 Kia Optima Silver
If Toyota Canada considered the Prius to be one car as Toyota USA does, it would have been Canada's 16th-best-selling car last month. But Canadian Prius sales were fairly evenly split in April 2012. Of the 1422 total sold, 39% were Prius C hatchbacks, 34% were Prius V wagons, and 27% were original Prius liftbacks. None of the three came close to cracking the top 20.

The Fiat 500 hung around on Canada's best-selling cars list. After landing in 18th in March, the Fiat 500 fell to 20th in April, 27 units ahead of the 21st-ranked Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Plenty of the 500s sold in Canada have been 500 Convertibles.

Three Kias made it on to April's list of the 20 most popular passenger cars in Canada, falling into a neat little row from 13th to 15th. The Optima was Canada's fifth-best-selling midsize car in April; the Rio was Canada's second-best-selling subcompact. The Good 12-winning Rio trailed only its fraternal twin from Hyundai. The Optima trailed Ford's Fusion, its Hyundai sibling, the Toyota Camry, and the class-leading Chrysler 200. Yes, you read that right.

Far above any of these cars, with 2.5 times the volume of Hyundai's Accent and 635 more sales than the second-ranked Hyundai Elantra, sits the best-selling car in Canada, Honda's Civic. Sales of the longtime most popular Canada are up 18% this year and improved at a 15% clip in April 2012. There are no other Hondas in the top 20. The next-best-selling Accord found 684 buyers in April, fewer than Toyota managed with its Tundra pickup.

Updates for every automobile sold in Canada that hasn't already seen its April 2012 and YTD numbers input will be provided over the course of the weekend. You can access these numbers through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page. GoodCarBadCar's April 2012 Canada Auto Sales By Brand post has been updated with figures from Maserati and Bentley. There'll be more best seller lists upcoming, as well, for trucks, SUVs, overall vehicles, and premium nameplates. For now, study these vehicles, the 20 best-selling cars in Canada in April 2012.

Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In Canada - March 2012

2011 Ford Fiesta hatchback red
Canada's 21st-best-selling car
in March, the Ford Fiesta
Although sales of Canada's best-selling car plunged dramatically on year-over-year terms, the Honda Civic still ended March 2012 as the nation's most popular car. March 2011 was an unbelievable clear-out month and there was little chance Honda was going to be able to repeat with another 8000+ month. By the end of the first quarter of 2012, Honda's lead over the Hyundai Elantra had grown to more than 3400 units.

Ninth in January and eighth in February, the Toyota Camry was, you guessed it, Canada's seventh-best-selling car and top midsize car in March. 426 of the Camry's 2022 sales were of the hybrid variety. The Camry was one of six classically midsize sedans among the top 20 best-selling cars in Canada in March, one of three Toyotas, and one of eight Japanese-badged cars.

Of course you've already scrolled past the text to discover the big surprise in March 2012's Canadian passenger car standings. The 18th-best-selling car in Canada in March was the Fiat 500. The year-over-year comparison with March 2011 may be invalid given that it was early days for the 500 a year ago, but the fact remains that March was the best month yet for Fiat sales in Canada. Chrysler Canada isn't likely going to repeat the 189% jump in April - that would mean approximately 2570 sales next month and a spot close to the top five. March was Fiat's best sales month south of the border, as well, but 3712 sales were only good enough to rank the 500 48th among passenger cars.

The majority of vehicles have already had their monthly and year-to-date sales figures updated in GoodCarBadCar's database of model-specific data, all of which you can access through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page. The few manufacturers which haven't been completed will be in the coming hours now that all the Canadian numbers are in. Below, you'll find a complete table of the top 20 best-selling cars in Canada in March 2012, including not one, not two, but three European entries.
