MIDSIZE LUXURY CAR SALES AND LARGE LUXURY CAR SALES IN CANADA - MAY 2010

2011 audi a8
Canada's May 2010 auto sales picture comes to a close with this picture, about six weeks after May 2010 came to a close. The most popular luxury automaker in Canada in May 2010 was Mercedes-Benz. Ranked 13th behind Kia, Volkswagen, and Jeep, Mercedes-Benz posted huge C-Class sales and a dominant midsize luxury victory with the E-Class, as you'll see below. Mercedes-Benz Canada continues to link CL-Class sales with the S-Class, somewhat rightfully, but with no other big sedan-based coupe in this segment it's hard to judge the strength of S-Class sales when compared with the 7-Series and Lexus LS.

BMW, ranked 15th overall in May, began to see its 5-Series sedan catch on. The new XJ had yet to see the light of Canadian day at Jaguar dealerships. If the U.S. sales story is anything to go by, (which it may not be) the XJ family could be primed for a sales resurgence in Canada over the course of the summer.

And will the Audi A8 ever grab attention in the Canadian market? Sales of the new A8 have begun - numbers should improve in the June 2010 rundown, but it's doubtful the A8 can muster Sales Stats anywhere close to what you see from Benz and BMW.

COMPACT LUXURY CAR SALES AND ENTRY LUXURY CAR SALES IN CANADA - MAY 2010

Mercedes C Class
Danger, danger: high Mercedes-Benz C-Class sales. BMW Canada's got to be on alert after May sales revealed an extremely tight race for small luxury car sales leadership. Not only that, if Mercedes-Benz had overtaken the 3-Series, the C-Class would've been the best-selling luxury car in Canada. The difference between the C-Class and 3-Series in May, 97 cars, was greater than the combined total of Volvo S40/V50 sales; less than Acura's TSX total. That's tight enough to worry BMW, rest assured, particularly when one realizes Mercedes-Benz is selling just one C-Class bodystyle in Canada.

3-Series sedans, coupes, convertibles, and wagons were responsible for 4,608 of BMW's 9,958 sales in Canada through the first five months of 2010.

One class beneath the 3-Series and C-Class, the Volvo C30 and Lexus HS250h are struggling to attract buyers of any kind. Apparently beauty isn't enough for the C30 to succeed; fuel efficiency not sufficient for the Lexus HS. It should be pointed out that none of the cars shown in the compact luxury car sales Graph are hot, not by any stretch of the imagination.

MIDSIZE CAR SALES AND LARGE CAR SALES IN CANADA - MAY 2010

chevrolet impala silver
Consider May 2010 car sales from the USA, just for a second. America's best-selling full-size car, the Chevrolet Impala, was purchased twice as frequently as America's best-selling subcompact car, the Nissan Versa. Now look at May 2010 car sales in Canada. This country's best-selling subcompact car, the Hyundai Accent, was about three times more popular than Canada's best-selling large car, the Chevrolet Impala. There's your deeper hidden meaning of the day, the fact you didn't know you needed to know but helped get you through your day anyway.

Now for a look at midsize car sales in Canada. Working on the assumption that in a particular vehicle category, though volume will invariably be wildly different, the best car is the best car regardless of country, compare the order in which midsize cars are ranked from Canada and the USA. In May 2010, Americans chose the Toyota Camry and its Venza wagon derivative more than any other car, no matter the size or bodystyle. Toyota was followed closely by the Honda Accord behind which you'd fine the Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan, Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, and then the Subaru Legacy and Outback.

Now, Toyota Venza sales in the USA were just 4,854, just enough to push Toyota past Honda. In Canada, Venza sales were nearly as strong as Camry sales in May - 1,006 to 1,374. So Toyota wins in Canada, too, but wouldn't have come close to doing so without the Venza, whereas Toyota USA would've been nipping at the Accords heels without the Venza. Moving down the line in Canadian midsize car sales, the Ford Fusion comes closest to Toyota. Then comes the Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima, and finally the Honda Accord in sixth position.

COMPACT CAR SALES AND SUBCOMPACT CAR SALES IN CANADA - MAY 2010

honda fit
Scroll down to the Graphs below and you'll find 90% of Canada's best-selling cars. Only the Ford Fusion fails to appear here, it being a midsize sedan and these Sales Stats focusing on subcompacts and compacts.

We're not far from a brand new Hyundai Accent, but the current model is selling like it's going out of style. Which I guess it is, come to think of it. It's hard to understand how the fun-to-drive and practical Honda Fit does so poorly in the Canadian market. Well, it's hard to understand until you discover its base price: $4,481 higher than the Accent's base price. For every Honda Fit sold in Canada in May, 4.79 Hyundai Accents exited Hyundai dealers. Makes you feel bad for the guy who only got 80% of an Accent, though.

True volume is seen in the compact segment, however. Joined with the Corolla (as Toyota does it in the States), the 8th-best-selling car in Canada helps propel Toyota's market share in the compact segment to nearly 20%. (This doesn't include irregulars like the Kia Soul or Chevrolet HHR, seen here.) Indeed, the Toyota Matrix is a major player in the Canadian automotive market, a vehicle so appealing that it's twin, the Pontiac Vibe, sold 297 units in May despite existing as part of a defunct brand. 297 Vibes is, if you couldn't figure it out for yourself, more than 275 or 217, the numbers put up by the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight, respectively.

Year-to-date, the Honda Civic is ahead of the Mazda 3 by 218 sales.

CHEVROLET vs FORD : BOWTIE vs BLUE OVAL - MAY 2010 IN CANADA

ford flex red
May 2010's automotive sales results revealed the Ford Escape to be more popular in Canada than the country's best-selling car, the Honda Civic. This was bound to make life difficult for the Chevrolet Equinox when it came time for the monthly Chevrolet vs Ford Graph. To be fair, General Motors collected another 883 small crossover sales from the GMC Terrain, too. The Escape's twin from Mazda, the Tribute, deserves credit for 825 more sales.

As seen earlier today in the Muscle Car Sales pie chart, Ford dealers have cut the Camaro's year-to-date sales lead over the Mustang by a healthy margin thanks to a very positive May 2010. 2011 Mustangs really are a very nice car.

Small cars filled up every spot in Canada's Top 10 Best-Selling Cars list for May; well, every spot but one. That went to the Ford Fusion which, in hybrid trim, is a member of The Good 12 v3.0. Chevrolet Malibu sales were healthy in May, nonetheless. Two outgoing models from Chevrolet and Ford, the Cobalt and Focus, continue to sell in decent numbers, a pleasant foreshadow of what could be dominance in the compact sector when the Cruze and new Focus arrive.

Finally, a strange occurrence with the midsize crossovers. Ford's stylish Flex, another GoodCarBadCar.net favourite, fares rather poorly in the United States. Not dreadfully, mind, just not as well as expected. Meanwhile the Chevrolet Traverse, a close relative to The Good 12 Supersize-winning Buick Enclave, is a top-notch seller. Here in Canada, however, we take our style more seriously. The Traverse, though pleasant, couldn't keep up with the Flex or its contrasting white roof in May. True, the Traverse is ahead through the first five months of 2010, but it's still interesting to see a very popular vehicle in the USA succumb to the wiles of its competitors in Canada.

CANADIAN SALES OF MINIVANS AND MUSCLE CARS - MAY 2010

mazda 5
Minivans and muscle cars, the bane and dream of the every man. You're the rational man, but a man whose image must be beautifully garnished. So the Dodge Grand Caravan sits in your driveway with a 2011 Ford Mustang GT 5.0. Or perhaps it's a Mazda 5 with a Dodge Challenger, or a Toyota Sienna with a Chevrolet Camaro.

Who'm I kidding? This is a Sales Stats post, a place for realists; not dreamers. For convenience, Graphs are being combined over the summer months because The Good Car Guy needs to play more frisbee and spend more time at the beach. Forgiveness, please.

Keep in mind, these sales figures for minivans and muscle cars like the Camaro and Mustang reach all the way back to May. (Data was late arriving. Forgiveness. Please.) The impact of Swagger Wagon ads may not have been fully felt. On the other hand, Canadians love to buy automotive products a size below their American counterparts, so the Mazda 5's success shouldn't surprise. Ford's newly-found wild popularity in Canada gels nicely with the Mustang's huge lead over the Chevrolet Camaro, too. Year-to-date, however, the Camaro was out in front by 274 units as of May 31st.

NICHE CAR SALES AND NICHE SUV AND TRUCK SALES IN CANADA - MAY 2010

Strangely, the abject failure that the Honda Insight is in the United States has not produced failure in Canada. That's not to say Canadian buyers always follow their American neighbours, not at all. It's also worth pointing out that the Insight's Canadian success is purely relative; as compared with the Toyota Prius. But the Prius, in Canada, has nowhere near the hybrid sway it does in the USA. So is the Honda Insight doing well in Canada? Uh.... no. Civics are more than 20 times as popular, for context. But is the Honda Insight within reach of the Toyota Prius in Canada? Yes, and that's not something that can be said by American Honda dealers.

The gap between Kia's Soul and the Nissan Cube is about as wide as it's ever been. Though GoodCarBadCar.net would've been glad to acquire a free Cube through the hypercube competition last year, it's not surprising that the Soul's pricing strategy, mixed with superior design and all-around Kia momentum is helping Kia conquer Nissan with ease. Come fall 2010 and Scion will try and throw a wrench into the Canadian boxy hatchback market with the xB.

As far as larger niche vehicle products go, don't we all just want a Jeep? Yes, apparently we all do.

SALES OF SPORTY CARS AND PREMIUM SPORTY CARS IN CANADA - MAY 2010

mercedes sls amg
Establishing whether the Nissan 370Z is better than the Hyundai Genesis Coupe isn't that difficult. Nissan has been working on the Z car concept for decades. The 370Z is the culmination of those efforts. It's better-looking than the 350Z, more powerful, and more refined.

Hyundai, of course, has price on its side. Able to play the value card, Hyundai Canada took Genesis Coupe sales to a level more than twice that of the 370Z's in May.

Thousands of dollars up the price scale, the Nissan GT-R is struggling to keep the Porsche 911 in sight. To be honest, the Nissan GT-R can't muster up the sales achieved by any premium sporty car shown in the Graph. New is everything in segments such as these: the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, though way more expensive, is able to out-sell cars like the BMW 6-Series and Nissan GT-R thanks partly to its greatness; mostly to its status as the most recently introduced.

CANADIAN SALES OF MIDSIZE LUXURY SUVs, LARGE LUXURY SUVs - MAY 2010

ontario flag
There are 13 midsize luxury SUVs and crossovers in the Graph below. Two of them, the Alliston, Ontario-built Acura MDX and Cambridge, Ontario-built Lexus RX, make up more than one-third of all midsize luxury utility vehicles sold in Canada. It seems rather fitting. Particularly when you consider that the third best-selling vehicle on the list, the Lincoln MKX, is manufacturerd in Oakville, Ontario. Without even taking the Lincoln MKT into account (also built in Oakville, Ontario), more than half of all midsize luxury utility vehicles sold in Canada in May were manufacturerd in Canada. They are Canada's favourites; built by Canadians for Canadians... and Americans.

Given those facts, it's a little ironic that none of the far more expensive, less efficient large luxury SUVs in the following Sales Stats Graph. You can find a Cadillac Escalade factory in Russia, however.

SMALL LUXURY SUV SALES IN CANADA - MAY 2010

Land Rover LR2
Though not heavily laden with competitors, the small luxury SUV segment is clearly one of the more competitive luxury vehicle categories of the modern age. The Germans are all present, an American crossover is very appealing, and Japanese alternatives fare well.

A look back through the annals of small luxury SUV sales, as chronicled by The Good Car guy, reveals strange ups and downs for the dreadfully ugly BMW X3. Mercedes-Benz's GLK350 4Matic is handsome and tremendously appealing. The Audi Q5 is a personal favourite, and the Volvo XC60 can't be counted out; at least not in the minds of stylish buyers. Although soft, it wouldn't be argued that the Indo-British Land Rover LR2 is the most capable off-road. Clearly buyers don't care. The Land Rover also has a more expensive base price than any other small luxury SUV in Canada.

CANADIAN SALES OF SMALL SUVs, MIDSIZE SUVs, LARGE SUVs - MAY 2010

As a result of the onset of summer and a much busier schedule for The Good Car Guy, July 5th marked the point at which multiple Graphs would be combined for the sake of brevity. This means less analysis, but you still get all the data you crave. Now, for Canada's May 2010 auto sales, the condensing of segments begins again.

Today, the talk is of SUVs and crossovers. In mainstream segments - small, midsize, and large, Ford and General Motors are teaching lessons on selling taller vehicles. Lesson #1: lower prices on aging SUVs. Lesson #2: offer huge incentives on every SUV and crossover. Lesson #3: make sure new CUVs and SUVs are really good.

The Ford Escape, Canada's best-selling utility vehicle, obviously leads the small segment. What's surprising is it's complete and utter dominance so many years into its life cycle. When combined with its platform-mate, Mazda's Tribute, the duo sold more than double the volume of any other SUV or crossover in Canada.

Not quite as dominant in the midsize category, the Ford Edge still manages to wipe the floor with its competition. Also take note of Ford Flex sales: in the USA, the Flex has almost been forgotten. In Canada, the Flex was the second best-selling midsize crossover in May.

If you're gonna go big, go really big. Among large SUVs, the jumboist of them all was the greatest seller in May. Chevrolet's Suburban is an icon among large sport-utility vehicles, a family hauler/trailer tower/moving helper of epic proportions.

TOP 5 BEST-SELLING TRUCKS IN CANADA - MAY 2010

chevrolet colorado
It's rare, though certainly not unheard of, for GM's two full-size pickup trucks to out-sell the all-time best-selling Ford F-Series. But it does happen.... periodically. May 2010 was one such month. Sales of the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado also combined to knock the Toyota Tacoma off this Graph of Canada's Top 5 Best-Selling Trucks.

Stuck in the middle in May 2010 were Dodge's Ram and the Ford Ranger, thousands of units behind the top dogs from GM and Ford's full-size family. Ford is hugely reliant on sales of the F-Series, as shown in the charts on Sympatico Autos. That's not to say General Motors and Dodge don't absolutely require their pickups to be successful; because they most certainly do.

What Toyota has going for it, even when the Tacoma and Tundra fail to crack this Top 5, are extraordinary car sales. Toyota's Corolla, Camry, Matrix, Venza, and Yaris are all very popular cars in Canada. That said, Ford car sales are rapidly gaining momentum.

TOP 10 BEST-SELLING SUVs IN CANADA - MAY 2010

jeep patriot blue
Sales of Canada's favourite small utility vehicle, the Ford Escape, rose sharply in May 2010. Compared with May of 2009, Escape sales jumped 10%. Escape sales in May jumped 45% from April's total.

News wasn't so good among some of Canada's other favourite SUVs and crossovers. The Chevrolet Equinox, Dodge Journey, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Hyundai Santa Fe all posted a loss of sales when compared with the month prior. Automakers could justify a lack of concern, however. Among this Top 10 grouping of the best-selling SUVs in Canada, only the Equinox and RAV4 suffered a drop when May 2010 sales are compared with May 2009 sales.

As for the usual argument over whether these vehicles deserve to be considered SUVs..... most of them don't. But they need to be classified as something - trucks and cars they are not.
