August 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In America

2013 Toyota Prius and Prius V and Prius Plug-In
Industry-wide growth brought huge sales to Toyota in August as the world's leading automobile manufacturer sold three models more than 20,000 times each. For the seventh consecutive month, the same three Toyotas - Camry, Corolla, Prius - finished inside the top 10.

The Camry, of course, was America's most popular car in August 2012. But how popular was the midsize Toyota sedan? The Camry is remarkably consistent in its ability to finish the month having found more buyers than any other nameplate, but the vast majority of new vehicle buyers look elsewhere. Of the 1.26 million new vehicles registered in the United States in August, fewer than 3% were Camrys. (In Canada, the Honda Civic is the best-selling car and it owned 3.6% of the overall market between January and July. In the UK, the best-selling Ford Fiesta owned 5.6% of the overall market during that period.)

Even if we only consider midsize cars, only the midsize cars in August's top 20, the Camry accounts for just (a class-leading) 20% of the sales. While it's perfectly reasonable to reference the Camry's popularity, as it is more popular than any other passenger car, it's also key to measure that reference, to balance it with notes on the ultra-competitive segment in which it competes.

There's much more going on in August's top 20 than just the Camry and its midsize competitors. The Chevrolet Cruze was the best-selling American-badged car and the best-selling compact car. Honda Civic sales more than doubled, year-over-year. The Volkswagen Jetta posted its first year-over-year improvement since February. And only 10% of the entries suffered a decline in volume compared with August 2011.

As always, you can access historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these vehicles through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or near the top right of this page. America's five best-selling trucks from August have already been revealed. The 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers have, as well. Below, the 20 best-selling cars in America in August 2012.

June 2012 Top 30 Best-Selling Vehicles In Canada

2012 Ford Fiesta hatchback green
Canada's 20 best-selling vehicles in June 2012 accounted for 47.1% of all new vehicles sold in Canada. From the Ford F-Series to the Jeep Wrangler, the most popular vehicles in Canada are all over Canadian roads. Conversely, America's 20 best-selling vehicles in June were responsible for forming 41.9% of the U.S. auto market.

This post's accompanying chart is clickable for a larger view. The list below ranks all 30 of Canada's top-selling vehicles, including a handful of cars which weren't present in this group a month ago. The Nissan Versa climbed to the 30th spot while also landing a spot on Canada's worst-selling vehicles list (when ranked by year-over-year decline.) The Nissan Rogue and Hyundai Tucson also cracked the top 30 after narrowly missing out in June. Meanwhile, the Kia Optima, Kia Rio, and Chrysler 200 were dismissed.

Canada's June 2012 best-selling vehicles market share chart
U.S. brands landed 14 different vehicles on this June 2012 list. Four of those 14 automobiles are passenger cars. There's one Volkswagen, five Korean vehicles, and ten Japanese-branded machines. Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these vehicles can be accessed free of charge through the dropdown menu near the top right of this page or at GCBC's Sales Stats home.

GoodCarBadCar published a few other Canadian best seller lists on Friday. Links to those posts are posted at the bottom of this article. You can examine detailed June and year-to-date sales figures for Canada's 30 best-selling vehicles below.

June 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In America

2011 Kia Optima Silver
Kia Sold 13,393 Optimas In America In June.
Hyundai Sold 20,931 Copies Of The
Similar But Different-Looking Sonata.
Chevrolet's Malibu made it close, but the Toyota Camry came out on top once again as the best-selling car in America in June 2012. 213,903 Camrys have been sold in the United States so far this year. That's a 45% improvement over the first half of 2011.

In an overall market which grew 22%, it's not surprising to see a large number of cars posting huge year-over-year gains. Besides the Camry's 50% increase and the second-ranked Malibu's 32% jump, the Honda Accord, Honda Civic, Toyota Prius, Kia Optima, Chrysler 200, Volkswagen Passat, and Dodge Avenger all reported increases greater than 50%. Four compact cars were the only products in the top 20 to record year-over-year losses in June 2012.

By Toyota Canada's standards, the Prius wouldn't be called the tenth-best-selling car in America in June. Toyota sold 12,209 Prius liftbacks (including 695 Prius Plug-In hybrids), plus 3284 Prius V wagons and 3657 Prius C hatchbacks. Then again, Honda used two bodystyles to get the Accord and Civic to 28,924 and 27,500 sales. The Nissan Altima, Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, and Volkswagen Jetta are all sold in two different forms, as well. Speaking of the Jetta, sedan sales slid 20% to 11,598 in June 2012. The Golf Jetta SportWagen was down 23% to 2006.

Since they're identical under the skin, combining the Avenger and 200 would make the Chrysler Group's midsize duo America's tenth-best-selling car. By that standard, however, we could also combine the Sonata and Optima, sales of which would have totalled 34,324 in June, enough to make the Korean pair America's best-selling car.

Historical monthly and yearly sales data for all these models can be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or at the top right of this page. We've already published the five best-selling trucks from June; 20 SUVs and crossovers are coming up next. And for brand-by-brand rankings, click here. Below you'll find the 20 best-selling cars in America from June 2012, 385,990 sales in all, or 30% of the overall market.

Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In America - May 2012

2013 yellow Ford Mustang Boss 302 front end
In a field normally filled with humdrum midsize sedans and numerous compact sedans, it's a real pleasure to see the Ford Mustang rank as the 18th-best-selling passenger car in America in May 2012. Chevrolet Camaro sales slid 5% year-over-year and the Bowtie muscle car fell right off this list - it ranked 15th at this time in 2011 - but Mustang sales are surging, up 58% last month.

Before the new Camry had taken hold but after the tsunami had destroyed parts of Japan last March, car supply in North America was strained. The Chevrolet Malibu was the best-selling car in the United States; the Camry ranked eighth. One year later, the new Toyota Camry is resoundingly and routinely America's top-selling car, beating the nearest competitor by more than 6000 sales in May, beating its nearest midsize rival by nearly 10,000 sales. Year-to-date, the Camry's lead over the second-best-selling Nissan Altima has grown to 46,507 units with seven months remaining.

Is it too early to say the Camry will end 2012 as the best-selling car in the United States? The fast-rising Honda Civic would need to outsell the midsize Toyota by 6673 sales in every month from June through December to conquer the Camry.

There are six Japanese-badged cars on this May 2012 edition of America's 20 best-selling cars, all in the top ten. This leaves four Korean cars, two Germans, and eight Detroit machines. Sales figures for each and every car present here as well as all the other 230 models on sale in North America can be accessed through the first dropdown at GoodCarBadCar's Sales Stats home.
