Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs In Canada - November 2010

Red indicates a downward trend. Sales of the Volkswagen Tiguan and Touareg, BMW X5 and X3, and Audi Q5 were all lower in November 2010 than they were in November 2009. But don't take more information from the red front than y'ought to. Sales of the two BMWs are up through the first eleven months of 2010. Audi Q5 sales are up about 63% in 2010. And Volkswagen's SUV duo has posted an combined increase of 51.4% in 2010, although the Touareg by itself is off 20.6%. What's more important for the Audi Q5 and Volkswagen Touareg is the northward arrow in the status column of the chart below. This means they're in a higher spot this month than they were in October 2010.

Yet the most obvious story from Canada's list of the Top 10 best-selling European SUVs in November 2010 must be Mercedes-Benz. With nearly 1100 Canadian SUV sales in November, Mercedes-Benz Canada's SUV trio more than doubled Volvo's overall total of 497 car and SUV sales, nearly quadrupled Jaguar/Land Rover's overall sales tally, and easily out-sold all of Audi and all of Infiniti. This discounts the effect Mercedes-Benz had on the Canadian market with its cars, some of which are really quite popular.

Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz division sold 26,577 vehicles in Canada through the first eleven months of 2010. BMW was 1627 sales behind while Toyota's Lexus total was only about half what Mercedes-Benz had by November 30th. (Acura was ahead of Lexus by 2154 sales at the end of last month.) Take away Mercedes-Benz cars and its SUV quartet - don't forget the Mercedes-Benz G-Class - trails all of Lexus by just 3358 sales this year.

The GLK was a success last year when its 11-month sales total topped 4600. This year, sales of the GLK are up 16%. The 2011 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 starts at $41,300, $100 more than the Audi Q5 and $600 less than the all-new 2011 BMW X3.

Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs In America - November 2010

Life isn't as easy come, easy go for the Mercedes-Benz GLK350 as it once was. Sales, awfully lofty last year, are hard to match in 2010. Fortunately for Mercedes-Benz, the GLK is still finding buyers and its larger brethren, the M-Class and GL-Class SUVs, are even more popular now than they were a year ago. In November 2010, in fact, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class out-sold the more recently revamped BMW X5, albeit by a narrow margin.

North Americans are accustomed to European vehicles being luxury-oriented. Apart from Volkswagen and semi-premium marques like Volvo and Saab, the only other current European brands we associate with non-luxury are Mini and Fiat. But the Mini Countryman isn't on this list yet, nor is a jacked-up 4x4 version of the 2011 Fiat 500, so the Volkswagen Tiguan is left to fend for itself in a sea of leather-lined, power-hungry SUVs. Although, if we face facts, the Volkswagen Tiguan plays on the premium end of the small SUV/CUV segment, too.

These are the ten most popular European SUVs in America from November 2010. They are nice. Some are nicer than others. Some are bigger than others. Take the Mercedes-Benz GL350 BlueTec, GL450, and GL550 as examples. Gargantuan dimensions don't seem to be forcing consumers to shy away from the GL-Class. In fact, the large luxury SUV segment as a whole doesn't seem to be struggling of late.

Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs In Canada - October 2010

Perhaps more impressive than the total number of SUV sales completed by high-end automakers from Europe in Canada in October 2010 is the fact that all but the least-expensive utility vehicle on this list improved on their October 2009 totals. Only the $27,875 Volkswagen Tiguan posted declining volume.

The Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs In Canada group is an eclectic mix of big, medium, and small; of retro and modern; of off-road capable and front-wheel drive-oriented. Volvo Canada, even with sales up 13.9% overall,  wasn't able to crack the list this month. BMW, even without the 2011 X3, out-sold the lovely Good 12-winning Audi Q5. And the success of the 2011 Porsche Cayenne seems to make a very good case for the introduction of a baby Cayenne, perhaps just like the one seen here.

Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs In America - October 2010

Their manufacturers are based in three European countries. It's safe to say that, of the ten, they compete in only three or four different SUV segments. They were, for the most part, more successful in October 2010 than in October 2009. They are America's Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs, and they are nice.

Let's start with the BMW X5. It's true that the X5's image is turning it into quite the familyish vehicle, almost a sporty but luxurious Toyota Highlander. But technically speaking, the 2011 BMW X5 range has everything you could want - big engines, diesel engines, an M variant. Moving on, the Mercedes-Benz ML350, ML350 Bluetec, ML450 Hybrid, ML550, and ML63 AMG form a hard-to-beat quintet. Except the M-Class is apparently beatable.... if you're the BMW X5. Then there's the Good 12 Supersize-winning 2011 Audi Q5. Choose between a turbo-four and a V6 - that's it. You'll be happy.

Popularity drops off quite a bit after the $60,950 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. It's hard to be certain, but as Mercedes-Benz introduced a replacement appendage to the G-Wagen, they couldn't have possibly thought the GL-Class would be this successful in this era. The 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL350 BlueTec and GL450 were Good 12 winners, too.

Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs In Canada - September 2010

One month of European SUV/crossover sales in Canada amounts to very little volume in the grand scheme of things. Compare the best-selling European utility vehicle from September 2010 in Canada, the Volkswagen Tiguan, with Canada's overall best-selling SUV, the Ford Escape. For every Tiguan sold, Ford sold eight Escapes.

On the other hand, one look at the financial value of these European SUVs and CUVs makes the automakers' wealth readily apparent. 460 GLKs were sold in September in Canada. The 2011 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 is in Canadian showrooms with a basic MSRP of $43,500. Elementary math puts the worth of 460 GLK350s at $20,010,000. Or how about the handsome new 2011 Porsche Cayenne? Porsche's Cayenne Turbo is on sale at $123,900, but even if all 112 Cayennes sold in Canada in September 2010 were the V6-engined $58,200 basic Cayenne, the value of those 112 SUVs stands at $6.5 million.

Ever wonder why traditional sport sedan and sports car builders jumped into the SUV business? Quit your wondering. These were Canada's ten most popular European SUVs in September 2010.

#10 - Volvo XC90: 109
#9 - Porsche Cayenne: 112
#8 - Audi Q7: 120
#7 - Volvo XC60: 122
#6 - Audi Q5: 219
#5 - BMW X3: 256
#4 - BMW X5: 285
#3 - Mercedes-Benz M-Class: 310
#2 - Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class: 460
#1 - Volkswagen Tiguan: 473

Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs In America - Through September 2010

A great number of factors come into play when a bunch of large, expensive vehicles sell a a faster rate one year than during the year previous. Incentives, of course, can play a part. Falling gas prices could do the trick. An improving economic situation for the wealthy among us? Yeah, that might have an effect, too.

The 2011 Land Rover Range Rover has a base price of $79,685. 2010 sales are up 15.4%. In fact, the Land Rover family's basic price of entry is $36,350, which nets you a 2011 Land Rover LR2. In 2008, Land Rover sold 8885 SUVs in the first nine months of 2008. That number improved to 18,385 over the first nine months of 2009. So far in 2010, 22,289 Land Rovers have been sold. Point to whatever factor you like, but one way or another, a whole lot of wealthy people are buying a lot of expensive vehicles.

Moreover, the percentage sales improvements posted by some other large, expensive SUVs are even greater plus they come with higher volumes.

Fact: through three-quarters of this year, Mercedes-Benz has sold over 50,000 SUVs in the United States. Call'em crossovers if you like, Mercedes has still sold over 50K. In other words, Mercedes-Benz has more SUV sales in America this year than all of Volvo's models combined.

These are the Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs In America over the course of the first nine months of 2010.

#10 - Land Rover Range Rover: 6355 ......... +15.4%
#9 - Volvo XC90: 6981 ........................... -3.6%
#8 - Volvo XC60: 8370 ......................... +42.3%
#7 - Land Rover Range Rover Sport: 8547 ... +18.6%
#6 - Mercedes-Benz GL-Class: 13,934 ........ +35.6%
#5 - Volkswagen Tiguan: 15,282 ............. +55.3%
#4 - Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class: 16,278 ........ +1.6%
#3 - Audi Q5: 16,636 ........................... +78.4%
#2 - Mercedes-Benz M-Class: 19,619 .......... +12.7%
#1 - BMW X5: 25,218 ........................... +35.2%
