November 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs In America

2013 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum Cayenne Red
America's 20 top-selling SUVs and crossovers accounted for 219,682 of America's 1.14 million new vehicle sales in November 2012. The Ford Escape trailed the leading Honda CR-V by 1363 units, but was the highest-selling of four American brand SUVs in the top five. Year-to-date, the CR-V's 15,042-unit lead over the Escape is not something that can be overcome in December, particularly if CR-V sales continue to rise and Escape sales continue to fall.

The chief newcomer on November 2012's list of the 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers in America is the Nissan Pathfinder. With 23% of its year-to-date sales coming in the eleventh month of the year, the Pathfinder nameplate owes much to the fourth-gen model that was recently introduced with more of a crossover angle.

The best Pathfinder sales year in the last decade was 2005, when 76,156 were sold. It seems unlikely that Nissan could sell 8000 Pathfinders each month now, but if it did, that 96,000 annual rate would have a hugely negative impact on the Murano, or at least one would think. Ford is doing a fine job of selling a big crossover-that-used-to-be-a-truck, the Explorer, alongside the smaller Edge and the better-selling Escape. Perhaps Nissan can do the same with the Pathfinder, smaller Murano, and better-selling Rogue.

All 265 Vehicles Ranked By U.S. November 2012 YTD Sales

12 different auto brands are represented in this month's top 20 list, although they hail from just eight different auto manufacturing entities. The Lexus RX was the only premium brand vehicle to crack the top 20, although you will soon be seeing in this month's luxury SUV sales post that Cadillac SRX sales shot up 13% to 5340 and BMW had a great month with the X5 and X3.

GoodCarBadCar makes all these sales figures readily available through the Sales Stats homepage where you can select any make, model, overarching manufacturer, or the total market. America's 20 best-selling cars have already been published along with brand-by-brand rankings and the country's five favourite trucks.

September 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs In Canada

2013 Mazda CX-5 red
By no means are all twins identical. In the case of SUVs and crossovers competing for attention in Canada, many of the best sellers are at least siblings, if not fraternal twins. But identical? Not at all.

Consider the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento, Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage, and finally the Toyota Highlander and Lexus RX. Together, these eight utility vehicles accounted for 6.1% of Canada's new vehicle market in September 2012.

Yet in terms of volume, not one of those pairs measured up to the individual Ford Escape last month. Escape sales are down 6% this year but shot up 21% in September, even as the overall industry reported 6.4% growth. The Escape is now 6955 sales ahead of the Honda CR-V in the race to end 2012 as the best-selling SUV in Canada. Despite a productive September, last year's second-ranked Dodge Journey has slid to the third spot as sales have fallen 1% through nine months.

Many have asked lately about the well regarded Mazda CX-5's low volume. The CX-5 was America's 26th-best-selling utility vehicle in September as the class-leading Escape sold 5.2 times more often. In Canada, so dominant is the Escape that even as the CX-5 ended the month as the 13th-best-selling utility vehicle (obviously much better than the little Mazda fared south of the border), the Escape still sold 5.3 times more often than the CX-5.

Historical monthly and yearly sales results for 282 different vehicles can be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or, for non-mobile users, near the top right of this page. The U.S. version of this post was published eight days ago. Key best seller links are clickable at the bottom of this post, but first you ought to peruse September 2012's list of the 20 best-selling SUVs in Canada. Nine brands are represented in the top 10, eleven brands in the top 13.

September 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs In America

1997 Honda CR-V
Like This '97, The 2012/2013 CR-V

Atop Something: A Best Sellers List
Ford's surging Escape is certainly trying to make Honda sweat it. What seemed like a sure victory just a couple months ago now looks likely, but not certain. The CR-V's lead over Ford's Escape in the race to end 2012 as the best-selling SUV in America has shrunk to 13,306 units.

At the end of May, the CR-V led the Escape by nearly 25,000 sales. The Escape won the September battle by 880 units but needs to win in October, November, and December by an average of 4435 sales.

Impossible? In the larger June market, the Escape beat the CR-V by 5218 units. The Escape finished August 4311 units ahead of the CR-V, as well.

4% of the Ford Explorers sold in America in September were Police Interceptors. To go along with 15,835 Equinoxes, Chevrolet also sold 2849 Captiva Sports to fleet buyers in September 2012. Hyundai's 15th-ranked Santa Fe has the lowest year-to-date total of any utility vehicle in the top 20. Yet with inventory of the third-generation Santa improving, the Santa Fe should be capable of overtaking its corporate partner, Kia's Sorento. The Lexus RX was clearly America's best-selling premium brand crossover in September while accounting for 34.6% of all Lexus sales.

As always, you can find specific monthly and yearly sales figures for all 20 of these vehicles by accessing the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or, for non-mobile users, the same dropdown near the top right of this page. GoodCarBadCar already ranked America's 20 best-selling cars. The five best-selling trucks are coming up. Brands were ranked by September volume earlier today. Below you'll find the 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers in America in September 2012.

August 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs In Canada

2013 Lexus RX350
A huge 1550-unit victory over the Honda CR-V in August stretched the Ford Escape's year-to-date lead over the next-best-selling SUV/CUV to 5146 units. The CR-V would need to outsell the Escape by an average of 1287 units in each of the next four months in order to unseat the Ford as Canada's best-selling SUV or crossover. That's not going to happen.

South of the border, in a market that's proven to be 8.3 times the size of the Canadian new vehicle market in 2012, the CR-V leads the Escape by 14,186 sales.

August was the Good 12-winning Jeep Wrangler's second consecutive month in the number five position. If that seems a bit high for a boxy hardcore 4x4 with weaker fuel economy than most of the SUVs in the top 20, that's because it is. The Wrangler ranked 15th in 2008 and in2009, 10th in 2010 and seventh in 2011. Through the first eight months of 2012, the Wrangler is ranked sixth.

Eight of the SUVs and crossovers among August's 20 best sellers in Canada wore American badges. Another four were Korean, leaving eight Japanese-brand SUVs and CUVs, including the Lexus RX, the only premium brand entry in August's top 20.

The list of Canada's 20 best-selling cars was published earlier this morning. GoodCarBadCar ranked every brand by total August volume early last week. As always, historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these specific vehicles can be found by accessing the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home.
