Small Luxury SUV Sales And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In America - September 2011

2011 Audi Q7 Beige
Lexus sold 5003 RX crossovers in September, a terrible result for a company that sold 7420 RXs in September 2010. The RX remained America's best-selling premium-badged utility vehicle last month, 102 sales ahead of the Cadillac SRX, a vehicle GoodCarBadCar.net places in the chart at the bottom of this post because of its low, X3-baiting price.

Fully one-third of all U.S. Lexus sales in September 2011 were generated by the RX duo. Sales of the larger GX460 fell 18%; the LX570 (shown here) was down 22%. Other notable midsize luxury SUV volume declines were reported by the worst-selling Acura ZDX (down 65%), The Bad 8's Lincoln MKT (down 29%), the Audi Q7 (down 20%), and the Acura MDX (down 28%).

Land Rover LR4 sales rose 20% in September. Sales of the Range Rover Sport jumped 37%. Volvo's aging yet still successful XC90 was up 31%.

Saab's turmoil has not afforded the 9-4X a chance to succeed. And that's too bad. The 9-4X is a looker, more conservative than the Cadillac SRX (up 22% last month), but somewhat cleaner. For every Saab 9-4X sold in America in September, Cadillac sold 102 SRX utility vehicles.

Among the SRX's European rivals, The Good 12-winning Audi Q5 came out on top despite a 2% decline. Mercedes-Benz GLK350 sales improved by 15%, climbing to 1934 from 1685. BMW X3 sales shot up 1169% from a paltry 146 sales when the first-gen X3 was dying off last fall.

Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales And Midsize Luxury Car Sales In America - September 2011

2011 Mercedes-Benz E550 Cabriolet
E-Class Mercedes sales dropped 9% in September 2011 but it remained way out in front of the BMW 5-Series and all other rivals. Mercedes-Benz sold 47,824 E-Class sedans, coupes, convertibles, and wagons in America in the first nine months of 2011. That's up 7% compared with the first nine months of 2010. BMW 5-Series sales are up 55% this year but ended September nearly 10,000 sales behind the E-Class.

In other direct battles, the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class's 399% year-over-year increase propelled it to 709 September sales. Audi sold 693 A7s. Volvo sold 524 S80s in the battle of the bland; Acura sold only 43 RLs. Acura RL sales plunged 82%; certainly more than enough to land it on America's Worst-Selling Cars list. Saab had an abysmal month but sales of the 9-5 did jump 165%.

Keep in mind, the powerful blue line representing the Hyundai Genesis includes sales of the Genesis Coupe. You can check out larger rivals of the Hyundai Equus here.

We're only days away from BMW's Facebook reveal of the next 3-Series, but BMW managed to sell more copies of the company's most popular this September than last. BMW 1-Series sales, on the other hand, fell 42%, as it was the only BMW model to report declining year-over-year sales. The Saab 9-5's gains were more than offset by the Saab 9-3's decline. Losing 856 units is rough, translating to an 82% drop.

The RL's decline was awful, but sales of Acura's smaller sedan, the TSX, were up 38% in September 2011. Cadillac CTS sales rose 24% from September 2010 levels. Sales of the midsize Ford Fusion-based $34,645 Lincoln MKZ improved notably, up 54% from 1254 last year. Mercedes-Benz C-Class sales were up 32% but the smallest sedan in Mercedes-Benz's U.S. lineup finished September more than 2400 sales behind the BMW 3-Series.

Large Luxury Car And Large Luxury SUV Sales In America - September 2011

2011 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG
Hyundai sold 292 copies of the company's bold Equus luxury sedan in America in September. In GoodCarBadCar.net's large luxury car chart, the Equus goes unmentioned because of its low price. At $58,750, the Equus costs $36,750 less than the Mercedes-Benz S550. GoodCarBadCar.net places the Equus in the midsize luxury car sales chart where prices align more closely with the big Hyundai.

You've already figured out that 292 sales would land the Equus in last place in the chart below. The Audi A8 posted a 395% year-over-year improvement in September, but with 411 September sales, doesn't measure up much better than the Equus. Jaguar XJ sales slid 3% to 462. The Porsche Panamera was down 18% to 514. Lexus LS sales actually rose, though only by 17 units. The BMW 7-Series was up 11% from September 2010's 783 sales.

The class leader, as usual, was the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Sales fell 15% in September, but the S-Class still beat its nearest rival, the 7-Series, by 578 units.

In addition to producing a popular luxury limo, Mercedes-Benz also knows how to sell the odd sport-utility vehicle. In fact, the company's $61,570-$85,300 GL-Class was more popular last month than the brand new $48,990 Mercedes-Benz ML350 and the $35,880 Mercedes-Benz GLK350. Moreover, the GL-Class Benz was more popular than the Cadillac Escalade in September 2011.

Mercedes GL sales jumped 28% last month. Sales of the regular-wheelbase Escalade improved by 26% to 1527. The long-wheelbase Escalade was down 14% to 713. Escalade EXT sales slid 3% to 174.

Sporty Car Sales And Premium Sporty Car Sales In America - September 2011

2011 Scion tC
In its first month on sale, the Hyundai Veloster was distinctly more popular than the Honda CR-Z. Sales of the two-seat Honda slid 57% in September 2011; falling 28% from August levels. Sales of the Volkswagen GTI far outweighed those of the Veloster... but the Veloster's just gettin' goin'. GTI sales jumped 43% in September, however, and accounted for 48% of all Golf sales. More popular than the Volkswagen GTI, the Scion tC reported a 79% improvement compared with September 2010's 981 U.S. sales.

Yet, despite what at first appear to be relatively healthy numbers for the Veloster, GTI, and tC, these three vehicles collectively aren't as popular as the Ford Mustang. Or the Chevrolet Camaro. Mustang sales slid 12% in September. The Camaro was up 11%.

Higher-class sports cars like the Porsche 911 posted some incredible year-over-year changes last month. The 911, as a prime example, jumped 55% from 325 to 504 sales. Sales of Nissan's GT-R climbed 70% from last September's 63 units. Jaguar's XK was up 19%. BMW reported a 576% increase in 6-Series sales.

The Audi R8 was down, but only slightly, by six units. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was down 29%, or ten units. Still, there were 122 Audi R8s and Mercedes SLS AMGs sold in America last month, and America's a better country because of it.

Minivan Sales And Truck Sales In America - September 2011

2011 Chrysler Town & Country
Up 16% in September, the Chrysler Town & Country owned 23% of America's minivan market. Together with the Dodge Grand Caravan (up 27% year-over-year), the Chrysler Group's share of the minivan market was a healthy 46% in September.

Speaking of the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan as a single unit makes ever more sense, particularly now that Fiat bosses have decided that dealerships don't need to be selling two barely differentiated vans. It makes sense that with decent trim line availability, Chrysler could have sold 20,608 Town & Countrys in September had the Grand Caravan not been available.

But then why hasn't General Motors decided to sell just a single full-size truck line instead of offering customers a Sierra and a Silverado? Granted, GM has worked hard to build three very different crossovers so Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC can offer customers a unique Enclave, Traverse, and Acadia.

Strangely enough, none of the minivans which go it alone were as popular as either of the Chrysler twins in September. Sales of the Honda Odyssey jumped 15% in September. Kia Sedona sales rose 40%. Sales of the Mazda 5 climbed 54%. The Nissan Quest, thanks to last year's hiatus, posted a 21,200% improvement from four sales to a class-low of 852. Only two minivans suffered year-over-year declines, the Volkswagen Routan, down 4%, and the Toyota Sienna, down 10%.

US Truck Sales Chart September 2011
There's more data available for September's ten most popular pickup trucks here, but the chart above shows the complete truck market, all 16 nameplates.

September 2011 was a good season for trucks in America. segment-leading Ford F-Series was up 15%. Ford saw sales of the F-Series' dying smaller stablemate, the Ranger, rise 88%. Chevrolet Silverado sales jumped 36%; the GMC Sierra was up 26%. Sales of the Dodge Ram pickup soared upwards at a 45% clip.

Though the overall new vehicle market improved by 10% compared with September 2010, though America's best-selling pickups fared much better this September than last, not all was well in the truck segment. Honda Ridgeline sales plunged 49%. The Ridgeline's down 49% year-to-date, as well.

GM has announced that the all-new Thailand-developed Chevrolet Colorado will come to North America, and sales of the current Colorado are up 30%, but Colorado sales slid 20% in September. Sales of the GMC Canyon, the Colorado's twin, fell 41%.

Small SUV Sales, Midsize SUV Sales, Large SUV Sales In America - September 2011

2011 Chevrolet Suburban Three Quarter Ton Silver
Together, the Chevrolet Equinox and its GMC Terrain fraternal twin, found 22,407 American buyers in September 2011. That's more than 2000 sales beyond the class-leading and overall best-selling SUV in America, Ford's Escape.

Speaking of the Escape, Ford announced this week that the company would forego the V6 option on the next Escape (set to be revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show) while offering a basic four-cylinder and two turbocharged versions, a 1.6L and 2.0L. The smaller EcoBoost turbo is said to achieve better fuel economy than the current Escape Hybrid, a vehicle which will likely disappear.

If the new Escape looks anything like the Vertrek Concept from the last Detroit auto show, Ford will undoubtedly have a hit on its hands. But will they be able to keep the price as low and the incentives as high as they are on the current Escape? Let's be honest, the current Escape is not top-of-the-class material, but it sells in vast numbers both in the United States and Canada because you probably won't pay as much in monthly payment terms.

As for some of the one-on-one battles from the small SUV class's September 2011 U.S. sales results, the Nissan Juke beat the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport by 1798 sales; the Mini Countryman was 305 units behind the Mitsubishi. Hyundai's Tucson out-sold its surging platform-mate, the Kia Sportage, by 135 sales. Meanwhile, Mazda CX-7 sales jumped 91% in September - the CX-9 was up 74%.. See it all in the small SUV sales chart below, scroll down for a look at midsize and large sport-utes and crossovers.

General Motors has been doing a much better job of late differentiating their platform sharers. The Equinox and Terrain are decent examples of that fact, but the company's larger Lambda platform products prove the point with ease. Judging by the strong sales numbers, the buying public agrees.

Sales of the curvy Buick Enclave rose 10% in September (and are up 10% year-to-date); the more conventional Chevrolet Traverse was down slightly (0.5%) but is up 7% this year; and sales of the utilitarian-looking GMC Acadia jumped 15% in September and are up 25% year-to-date. Together, the three Lambda crossovers combined for 18,028 September 2011 sales. Sales were spread rather equally between the three: 27% for Buick, 29% for the GMC, and 44% for Chevrolet.

GM's sales may sound strong, and they are, but you'll spot 25,100 Ford sales in the chart below. There were three Fords in the top six of September's Top 10 Best-Selling SUVs In America list, but just one GM product in the top 10. Ford Explorer sales skyrocketed upward with a 204% year-over-year bump. Mitsubishi Endeavor sales jumped 82%.

The Suzuki XL7 wasn't able to make that list. XL7 sales slid 86%. To one.
Midsize SUV Sales Chart USA September 2011
Of the 25,743 sport-utility vehicles in the large SUV sales chart below, 77% were GM products. The Ford Expedition's share of the jumbo market was 13.5%. Chevrolet Suburban sales shot up 83% in September; Tahoe sales rose 63%. The GMC Yukon XL was up 67%; sales of the regular-wheelbase Yukon jumped 45%.

Sales of the all five domestic SUVs in the chart below improved year-over-year, then, and are also better in the first three quarters of this year than the first three quarters of last year. Nissan Armada sales also improved in September, but the Armada is down 6% year-to-date. Sales of the Toyota Sequoia fell 29% in September 2011 and are off last year's pace by 5% in the first nine months of this year.

Small Car Sales, Midsize Car Sales, Large Car Sales In America - September 2011

2012 Nissan Versa Sedan
U.S. sales of the Nissan Versa took off in September 2011 after Nissan made a big deal of the new Versa sedan's legroom, headroom, and low, low price. Nissan is attempting to persevere with the old Versa hatch for now, but the $10,990 sedan helped Nissan post a 68% year-over-year Versa volume increase.

There's no doubt that subcompact customers would be better served by the 2012 Hyundai Accent 5-door or the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic hatchback than the unfortunately ugly Versa sedan. Both those cars feature a higher base price, something Versa customers clearly can't get over. It's not as though there's any overwhelming reason to choose the Versa besides its price.

The Versa's more expensive compact sibling is the Nissan Sentra, sales of which were also on the upswing in September 2011. Sentra sales were high enough to make it the 19th-best-selling car in America last month. However, aside from the Versa, seven compact rivals sold in greater numbers.
U.S. Small Car Sales Chart September 2011
CLICK ANY CHART FOR LARGER VIEW
If the Versa is the story of the small car category, the Nissan Altima's 22% improvement and 24,356 September sales makes it a candidate for top newsmaker in the midsize class. Sure, the Toyota Camry found more buyers - it almost always does - but while we wait for the 2012 model to bring Camry sales back up to par, September's 5918-unit loss doesn't merit the Camry greater attention.

The brand new Kia Optima is beginning to have a more serious impact on the category. Sales jumped 206% in September, although the month-to-month gains from August measured just 34 units. The Optima accounted for 17% of all Kia U.S. sales last month. It was the brand's third-best-selling model.

Sales of the Optima's platform-mate, the Hyundai Sonata, slid 12% in September. It's not crazy to think that the Optima's success comes at the expense of falling Sonata sales, though the theory may prove inaccurate. Moreover, the Sonata remains Hyundai's best-selling model and was responsible for nearly one-third of the brand's September sales.
U.S. Midsize Car Sales Chart September 2011
THE ABOVE CHART MAY SAY AUGUST, BUT IT REFERS TO SEPTEMBER SALES
A very negative picture could be painted in regards to mainstream large cars and their suffering September sales. Ignore the premium-badged and defunct Cadillac DTS and Lincoln Town Car for now. Set aside the dying Buick Lucerne and the police-only Chevrolet Caprice, as well.

Buick LaCrosse sales were down 8.5% in September. The Ford Taurus was off by 38%. Toyota Avalon sales slid slightly, down 1.2% from September 2010 levels. Dodge reported a 23% decline.

That leaves the Chrysler 300 - and its impressive 50% jump - and the Nissan Maxima's 26% improvement. Thing is, the 300 is down 20% year-to-date. The Maxima is down 7% this year.

Top 10 Worst-Selling Cars In America - September 2011

Kia Rio5
Oft repeated but always worth mentioning, the establishing of a Worst-Selling Cars list isn't easy. Certain cars are bound to be poor sellers. Take the Kia Rio for instance, the top (or is it bottom?) ranked car on the first table which measures Worst Sellers by year-over-year percentage decline. The outgoing Rio is dead to the world, the new Rio isn't here yet. How can Kia do anything but sell significantly fewer Rios this September than last?

Of course, every car has its reasons. We expect to see the Acura RL here because it's a shamefully dull midsize luxury car competitor. And Saab has run into some troubles. And Hyundai isn't really doing anything with the current Azera. The Mercedes-Benz R-Class was never a hit. The Nissan Cube lost to the Kia Soul on so many levels. The same could be said of the Honda Insight and its top dog rival from Toyota, the Prius. The Good Car Guy put the Lexus HS250h in The Bad 8. Mercedes-Benz has been suffering from dramatically declining SL-Class sales for months now. And the Acura ZDX is another Bad 8 member because it is so... freaking... ugly.

The Kia Rio, then, doesn't really deserve to be here. In September 2011 it was trapped inside a problem not related to desirability but directly connected to plant retooling, product life-cycles, and inventory. Though many other members of this first Top 10 Worst-Selling Cars list will be here next month, and probably the next, the Rio won't linger long.

All Three Lists Updated & Corrected On 10/18/2011

It's fair to say that, based on the second chart you'll see below, the Hyundai Azera would be September 2011's worst-selling car in America. Except there are issues with such a statement. Hyundai has been delaying the next-generation Azera for what feels like a dog's age, allowing the current Azera to soldier on without any support. But under GoodCarBadCar.net Worst Sellers rules (which state that a vehicle featured on the company's website in the current model year which has not been cancelled by its automaker will be eligible) the Azera is a worst seller.

Again, really, the Chevrolet Caprice? Ah, the Caprice is police car only material. The Mazda Tribute? I'm not sure Mazda remembers where the Tribute came from. Long live the 2013 Mazda CX-5. There are currently four Suzuki Equators for sale within 100 miles of northeast San Antonio, Texas, however. If you wanted one you could have one. Thus, on volume terms alone, the Equator does stand out as the true worst-selling vehicle in America in September 2011.

In the third chart, one which measures worst sellers by volume but takes into account all vehicles, even those intended to be ultra-exclusive and not just the mainstream contenders, you'll find the ultra-rare Lexus LFA, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, and then a true failure, the Acura RL. Sales of the RL sedan slid 82% in September. The RL is the most boring premium-badged vehicle on sale today.

The super-rare CL-Class Benz was actually up 28% in September. SL-Class sales fell 66% and the R-Class was down 72%, putting both in the list of 10 Worst-Selling Cars By Percentage Decline at the top of this page. The Acura ZDX, a member of The Bad 8, was off last year's pace to the tune of a 65% decline. Porsche Cayman sales improved greatly in September, up from 61 at this time last year.

Top 30 Best Selling Luxury Vehicles In America - September 2011

2012 Volvo S60 R-Design Red Front End
The U.S. auto market grew by 10% in September 2011. More specifically, the luxury portion of the market, as described here, grew by 6.4%. That's slightly off the pace, a fact which will come as no surprise once you realize that more than one-third of America's 30 best-selling luxury vehicles suffered from declining year-over-year sales in September.

At the top of the leaderboard, the BMW 3-Series enjoyed a decent September sales spurt as it closes in on being replaced by the sixth-generation F30 3-Series. September sales of the 3-Series rose 4%, year-over-year. More than 2600 sales behind but ranked second was the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, sales of which jumped 29% last month.

Further down the list of best-selling luxury vehicles, you'll spot even greater gains. BMW garnered an 1169% boost in X3 sales as the second-generation X3, fully on-stream now, is contrasted with the end of the first-generation X3's reign. Though X3 sales improved dramatically, it still trailed the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLK in overall volume.

Ranked 25th, one spot beind the X3, Volvo's S60 soared upward at a 519% clip. That explains a large part of Volvo's 21.4% overall increase. Yet Volvo, as a brand, didn't sell as many vehicles as Lexus did with the RX alone, despite the fact that Lexus RX sales slid 33%.

If you'd prefer not to see the Hyundai Genesis on this list (Genesis sales include the Genesis Coupe, priced from $22,250), the Infiniti QX56 is next up with 1206 sales. If not, these are the Top 30 Best-Selling Luxury Vehicles In America from September 2011.
