Canada's fledgling full-size SUV market plunged 45% in February 2013. Through two months, the market is down 35.9% compared with the same period in 2012; down 15.9% compared with 2011.

 While this barely impacts the overall industry - only 259 fewer large SUVs were sold this February than last - it does manifest an exaggerated version of what's going on in the market as a whole. Sales are down slightly in other parts, mainly at import dealers. Chrysler Canada, Ford Canada, and GM Canada have all generated improvements this year.

In the large SUV sector itself, GM owned 48.3% of the market in February, down from 50.1% in the month before and 57.7% a year ago. Keep in mind, segments this small are subject to huge percentage swings. The results rarely have a significant impact on their respective automaker's totals. Last February, for example, the large SUV market rose 31% even as the overall industry was up just 11.2%.

 The U.S. version of this chart was published just moments ago. Americans registered 57 times more large SUVs in February. The U.S. market was only 11.6 times stronger than the Canadian market last month.

February 2013 Large SUV Sales In America

Americans - and the Secret Service - registered 18,041 full-size sport-utility vehicles in February 2013, not including the nameplates shown in the large luxury SUV sales chart yesterday. The segment was up 7.5% compared with February 2012, up 32% compared with January 2013. America's overall new vehicle market produced gains of 3.7% and 14.3% in the same periods.

America's three favourite large SUVs in February were all GM products. Ford Expedition sales fell 22.4%. The Nissan Armada was down 22.5%. 

 Through the first two months of 2013, GM's market share rose to 69.4% (from 66%) in a segment that's grown 0.4% compared with last year.

January 2013 Large SUV Sales In Canada

The seven mainstream full-size sport-utility vehicles available in Canada attracted 425 buyers in January 2013. That's 20 more sales than were collected by the seven SUVs in the large luxury category, a segment which includes much more costly nameplates. 

 28.7% of the large SUVs sold in Canada last month were Ford Expeditions. 50.1% were GM products. Sales of all four GM SUVs (plus the Cadillac Escalade) declined by at least 32%. GMC Yukon XL sales were cut in half. The Toyota Sequoia outsold the Chevrolet Suburban and Yukon XL and nearly caught up to the Chevy Tahoe. Sequoia sales in the U.S. were relatively strong in January, as well.


As a group, these sport-utility vehicles were responsible for just 0.45% of the overall Canadian new vehicle market in January. January 2013 Large SUV Sales In America

13,667 full-size mainstream brand sport-utility vehicles found homes in America in January 2013. That's down 7.5% from the 14,783 large SUVs sold in the U.S. a year ago, when the segment made up 1.6% of all new vehicle sales in America. These seven sport-utes accounted for just 1.3% last month. Americans, for business use and presumably even personal use, registered 18,487 commercial-oriented vans. 

The Chevrolet Tahoe, America's 15th-best-selling SUV in December, posted a 9% year-over-year decline and a 58% month-over-month slide even as the market rose 14% year-over-year and slid just 23% from December to January.

Nevertheless, the Tahoe was still the top-selling large SUV in America last month, 1127 sales ahead of the Ford Expedition, sales of which rose 6% compared with last January. Moreoever, General Motors owned 64% of the increasingly unimportant category, down from 67% at this time last year.

Canadians registered 658 new full-size mainstream brand sport-utility vehicles in December 2012. 59% of those SUVs were General Motors products, but the Ford Expedition was the class leader, outselling the GMC Yukon by 21 units.

 The Expedition was one of three full-size sport-utes to post a year-over-year volume increase in Canada in 2012. Compared with 2011, Expedition sales jumped 12%, good enough to beat the second-ranked GMC Yukon by 684 units. 7586 of these SUVs were sold in 2012, including the Kia Borrego's four units. GM owned 58% of the market, Ford another 25%, and the Asians the other 17%.

But the large SUV category is an awfully small category in Canada. Numerous midsize utility vehicles - including the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento, which GCBC also displays with small SUVs - outsold the whole large SUV segment with ease. Ford markets three different utility vehicles which outsell the Expedition and the Expedition's rivals combined.

Speaking of Fords which outsell other SUVs, the Explorer beat the Jeep Grand Cherokee by eleven units. The Explorer also managed to outsell the Toyota 4Runner and Highlander, Toyota's midsize tandem, something it most definitely did not do south of the border.

Ford is a much more popular brand as a whole in Canada. 14.9% of the new vehicles purchased and leased in the United States in 2012, but in Canada, the Ford brand's market share was 16.1%.  29.1% of the new Fords sold in Canada in 2012 were SUVs and crossovers. 24.7% of Ford Canada volume came from passenger cars; 39.4% of Ford volume was F-Series derived.

Among smaller SUVs and crossovers competing for attention in the United States, no continuing vehicle suffered as great a decline as the Kia Sportage in 2012. Hyundai Santa Fe sales slid 4.5%, but Santa Fe sales have been rising of late. Kia Sorento sales slid 8.2% the year after it reached an all-time high in U.S. sales volume. The Mitsubishi Outlander was down 21%, but that's Mitsubishi, and we basically assume that sales will fall. The Honda Element, Suzuki Grand Vitara, Mazda CX-7, Mazda Tribute, and Suzuki Grand Vitara are dead, dying, or gone.

The Sportage is certainly hindered by the Sorento's price proximity, but the bigger story is that the overall Kia brand's continued ascension occurs without the support of crossovers in a market where small crossovers are very, very popular. Keep in mind, this isn't a commentary on the popularity of the Sportage or the Sorento - Kia sold nearly 120,000 copies of the latter in 2012. But the decline of these two products, in addition to the extinguished Borrego, didn't hold Kia back from recording a 15% year-over-year increase in U.S. sales in 2012. In other words, Kia's car business is rockin', up 36% in 2012, 51% in 2011, 4% in 2010, and 18% in 2009. And even when the new vehicle market was in tatters, Kia car sales rose 0.2% in 2008.

This is an SUV sales segment breakdown post, however. Returning to the subject, the Honda CR-V had a tremendous year, selling more often in 2012 than in any other year in its history. The CR-V was the best-selling SUV or crossover in the United States in 2012, outselling the Ford Escape by 20,644 units.

 Scanning the lists of larger and/or more expensive midsize and large SUVs reveals a far greater amount of red ink, the kind of colouration that signifies declining year-over-year sales. From obvious candidates like the Subaru Tribeca and Mitsubishi Endeavor to popular vehicles like the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia, many big crossovers struggled to find as many buyers in 2012 as they did in 2011. The same can't be said of the best sellers, however. Sales of the Ford Explorer rose 21%, as did sales of Jeep's Grand Cherokee. The Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Highlander, and Volkswagen Touareg all posted increases better than that which was achieved by the overall new vehicle market.

Very little went right with the biggest mainstream brand sport-utility vehicles, though. One vehicle, the least popular Toyota Sequoia, recorded a slim 1% improvement in sales, equal to 129 extra units for Toyota over the course of 2012's twelve months. Six other full-size SUVs were a drag on the overall market's growth. The Chevrolet Tahoe, America's 21st-best-selling SUV, sucked away 11,623 sales from General Motors that it had provided the brand last year; the GMC Yukon another 6432.

In all, 237,550 full-size, mainstream brand, large SUVs were sold in the United States in 2012. That was down 9.1% from 2011 levels. In 2011, the five Detroit brand SUVs recorded year-over-year increases.
