Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales And Midsize Luxury Car Sales In America - November 2011

U.S. small luxury car sales chart November 2011
Since July, U.S. sales of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class have increased each and every month. August was 4% better than July, September sales grew 45% from August levels, October sales jumped 3%, and November was up a further 18%. Compared with November 2010, C-Class sales last month more than doubled to 8358. The small Benz sedan/coupe duo was America's best-selling luxury vehicle overall, beating its nearest direct rival by 790 units.

While all that C-Class news sounds wonderful, consider the fact that the BMW 3-Series, the aforementioned direct rival, is now an outdated model. The terrific new F30 3-Series sedan will arrive in showrooms soon, at which point 3-Series sales will spike. The C-Class's recent improvement suggests customers in this segment aren't all willing to wait for the new 3-Series. Even so, 3-Series sales were healthy enough in November to make it America's 20th-best-selling car.

Three dead or near dead Swedish cars suffered dramatic U.S. sales declines in November. Lexus HS250h sales plunged 74%. The Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series posted 38% and 35% drops, respectively. The Volvo S60 jumped 384%.

Check out last month's version of this post here and find monthly and yearly sales figures for all these vehicles by accessing the dropdown menu in the top right of this page. Keep scrolling for a look at November's U.S. sales data on midsize luxury cars like the top-selling Mercedes-Benz E-Class, failing Acura RL, fast-rising Audi A6, and the dying Cadillac STS.

Small Luxury SUV Sales And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In America - November 2011

2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class perched on rocks beside a
river because the grassy area just wasn't right
With the Range Rover Evoque intruding into its space, the Land Rover LR2's struggles to sell in meaningful numbers continued unabated in November 2011. U.S. LR2 sales are down 27% through eleven months; sales dropped 14% in November. The Evoque wasn't quite three times as popular, but the newest Range Rover did easily out-sell the Infiniti EX and Saab 9-4X, nearly catching the Volvo XC60 in the process.

The most popular small luxury utility vehicle isn't really so small in reality. Nevertheless, the Cadillac SRX's competitive pricing positions the American against strong German rivals which don't manage to sell nearly as well. BMW X3 sales jumped 2947% from last November's end-of-the-line first gen X3's performance, but even the second place X3 was nearly 2000 units back of the SRX.

Monthly and yearly sales figures for all these vehicles, both American and Canadian, can be accessed by making selections in the dropdown menu at the top right of this page. Keep scrolling for a look at November's U.S. sales data on larger and more expensive luxury SUVs and crossovers. Full-size luxury SUV sales data can be seen here. Last month's version of this post is essential reading, so get on it.

Cadillac SRX sales are strong - up 16% in November, up 10% this year - but the Lexus RX is ready to recover from a tough year. Sales were up 5% in November. The RX350/RX450h found 7580 new owners in November; 2844 more new owners than Cadillac found with the SRX.

Acura ZDX sales remain pitifully low and have been cut in half this year. November sales, however, were down "just" 19%. Percentage drops don't tell the whole story, but on these terms, no midsize luxury SUV fell harder than the rather large Lincoln MKT. The ugly (and getting uglier) MKT slid 45% in November. Sales of the similarly vast Audi Q7 sales plunged 40%.

Mercedes-Benz M-Class sales, on the other hand, jumped 38% in November, topping the Cadillac SRX by 60 units. The M-Class was America's fifth-best-selling premium vehicle last month. The BMW X5, up 31% in November, was America's ninth-best-selling premium vehicle. The Acura MDX's 3308 sales ranked it twelfth. In 24th and 27th spot, respectively, were the Lincoln MKX and Land Rover Range Rover Sport.

Large Luxury Car Sales And Large Luxury SUV Sales In America - November 2011

2012 Jaguar XJ Sport Pack
Four of the six major luxury limos competing in the United States have reported falling sales this year. Three of those cars also failed to match November 2010's volume one year later. Sales of the Porsche Panamera slid 17% in November 2011. After topping the segment last month, the Lexus LS dropped 25% year-over-year, 20% from October's 1186 sales. Jaguar XJ sales are up 21% this year but fell 33% last month.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class was America's most popular large luxury car in November. Sales jumped 23%. The aging S-Class is down 12% through the first eleven months of 2011 yet leads the segment in spite of its decline. The Hyundai Equus's price point positions Hyundai's gigantic sedan against midsize luxury cars like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but in case you were too curious to wait for that post, you can find Equus sales figures here. Hyundai sold 300 in November, the Equus's second-best month yet.

Keep scrolling for a look at the U.S. sales figures of large luxury sport-utility vehicles. For context, check out last month's version of this post.

No large luxury SUV reported as nasty a decline as the ultra-rare Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Sales of the $107,100 G550 and $124,450 G55 AMG fell 48% in November. On the flip side, Mercedes-Benz's less expensive GL-Class was the most popular large luxury SUV in Americal as sales jumped 54% last month.

As individual vehicles, the regular-wheelbase Cadillac Escalade was down 5% to 1274 in November 2011. Sales of the long-wheelbase Escalade ESV rose 2% to 777. The Escalade EXT, also featured in America's pickup truck sales chart, was down 0.5% to 196 units.

Small Car Sales, Midsize Car Sales, Large Car Sales In America - November 2011

U.S. small car sales chart November 2011
The Chevrolet HHR is very nearly gone. The Buick Verano is just beginning to arrive. One out of every 249,000 new vehicles sold in America in November 2011 were Veranos. Whether you believe the latest Buick is a competitor for the Acura TSX or the Chevrolet Cruze, the performance of another Buick - the Regal, which you'll find in the second table below - will lead you to believe the Verano won't have a major impact on the market. Its impact will definitely be more noticeable than it was in the latter days of November.

America's most popular small car choice in November 2011 was the Honda Civic, sales of which rose 3%. Civic sales are down 14% this year but remain strong enough to make the Honda America's third-best-selling compact. The Civic trails the Chevrolet Cruze by 14,367 sales and the Toyota Corolla by 18,560, deficits which will not be made up in December.

Apart from the Verano, the only other change in this month's small car sales table is the inclusion of the Mitsubishi i MiEV. We are not close to a time when Mitsubishi could sell i MiEVs in large numbers, but expect to see a number higher than four in December's results.

After the jump you'll find November sales tables and market share charts for midsize and large cars. Monthly and yearly sales figures for all these cars and every other current model on sale can be accessed through the dropdown menu in the top right of this page.

Honda Insight sales were cut in half in November 2011. Sales of the Suzuki Kizashi slid 43%. It appears as though customers who would otherwise have opted for a Volkswagen CC were tempted by the less costly Volkswagen Passat, sales of which climbed 1509% in November. CC sales fell 35% in November. The Toyota Venza was down 22%.

Compared with the Chrysler Sebring's effort from November 2010, midsize car sales at the Chrysler brand jumped 481%. Dodge Avenger sales doubled to 5643. An even greater jump was reported at Kia: Optima sales shot up 570%. Thanks in part to the Prius family's additional member - the Prius V - total Toyota Prius sales improved by a notable 49%.

U.S. large car sales chart November 2011
Dodge sold 2.6 times more Chargers in November of this year than in November 2010. Chrysler 300 sales were better than triple what they were in November 2010.

But if you really want to sell a large number of big cars you sign up with General Motors to sell Chevrolet Impalas. Clearly a fleet favourite and a value-driven purchase, the Impala is an immensely common car in the United States. Nevertheless, sales of this obviously frequent large car choice plunged 26% last month. In a market which has grown 10% this year, Impala sales are up just two-tenths of a percent.
