Large Luxury Car Sales And Large Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - November 2011

Canada large luxury SUV sales chart November 2011
A Canadian Lexus LX570 acquisition was as rare an event as the acquisition of a Nissan GT-R in November 2011. The main difference resides in the trending direction: GT-R sales jumped from two in November 2010; Lexus LX sales fell from 15.

The gigantic Lexus SUV remains the cheaper option. At $89,950, the 383-horsepower LX costs $19,950 less than the 530-hp junior supercar of a Nissan, a car which costs 22% more in Canada than it does in the United States.

2011 Lexus LX570
Lexus LX570 in Starfire Pearl
The LX doesn't appear to even enter the equation for most buyers of large luxury sport-utility vehicles. Total Cadillac Escalade sales were up 4% to 118 in November, making the 'Slade nearly 17 times more popular than the Lexus. Even Toyota's Land Cruiser, a Lexus LX relative which isn't officially marketed in Canada, was three times as likely to be acquired in November than the LX570.

At the top of the heap is Mercedes-Benz's GL-Class - along with the ultra-rare G-Wagen - which together reported a 26% year-over-year jump. G/GL-Class sales are up 24% through the first eleven months of 2011. This means that for every buyer who walks into a Canadian Mercedes-Benz dealer to buy an S-Class or S-Class Coupe CL-Class, Mercedes-Benz's flagship SUV pair finds 2.3 buyers.

Although distinctly less popular than its two more famous rivals, the Lexus LS was a rare breed in Canada's luxury limo sector last month. The LS was up 12% last month; every one of its rivals didn't fare as well in November 2011 as they did in November 2010. Nevertheless, BMW sold more than twice as many 7-Series sedans as Lexus did LS sedans, and the combined efforts of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and its coupe brother, the CL-Class, was even more popular.

Of course, popular is a difficult word to use when you're talking about cars which, collectively, amounted to 0.014% of Canada's new vehicle market in November. South of the border, the very same six cars accounted for 0.05% of all new vehicle sales last month.

Let's say you want a premium brand vehicle, but an impractical roadster like the BMW Z4 won't cut it. You need practicality, but a $73,400 Porsche Cayenne S is a tad expensive for your tastes. There are great luxury wagons available, but you'll visit many a Canadian BMW dealership which features not a single 3-Series Touring on the lot.

You're left with ten options, at the very least. The ten vehicles in the first table below accounted for 21.1% of all premium brand sales in Canada in November 2011. Sales of the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, and BMW X3 soared in November, shooting up 62.1%, 94.5%, and 201%, respectively, compared with the same period in 2010. Through the first eleven months of 2011, the Q5, X3, Cadillac SRX, and Volvo XC60 are all selling better than they did in 2010. The most notable increase belongs to the X3, a hard-to-find vehicle last year that is now much improved in second-generation form.

Ranked sixth in this tightly formed class (or seventh or eighth if you'd rather see the the Lexus RX and Lincoln MKX included) is the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque. Sales increased 42.6% in its second month on sale.

Keep scrolling for a look at larger and/or more expensive luxury SUVs/crossovers. Last month's version of this post doesn't show the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz M-Class as class leaders. The U.S. November edition has the Cadillac SRX crushing the Germans and the Lexus RX beating the M-Class by 2784 units. Monthly and yearly sales figures for all these models and every other model currently on sale can be found by making selections in the dropdown menu at the top right of this page.

No vehicle in the table below reported as great a year-over-year decline as the BMW X6. Strange though it may sound, the dreadfully awkward-looking X6 was Canada's 26th-best-selling luxury vehicle in November. The X6's most obvious rival is probably the Acura ZDX, one of Canada's worst-selling vehicles. ZDX sales slid 93.1% in November.

Nearing the end of a tough year, the Lexus RX has now reported two consecutive year-over-year increases in a row. The RX's 11.2% bump wasn't enough to fend off the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, however, as sales of the mid-range Benz jumped 46.8% to 615 last month.

Of the 16 cars in the first table below which were capable of posting year-over-year sales declines, 11 did so. From the Acura CSX - a car we now know will become the even less fortunately-named ILX before too long - to the now defunct Volvo V50 (which did not record a single sale in November 2011) sales were down last month.

As proof that percentage declines, though deserving of attention, are not the whole story, consider the fact that BMW's 3-Series was down 26.6% compared with November 2010 yet was still the most popular small/entry luxury car and the best-selling premium vehicle in Canada.

On the flip side, sales of the Acura TSX rose 30.7%, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class was up 58.2%, and the Volvo S60 jumped 119%, but none were as popular as the 3-Series, although the Benz was close.

You can find monthly and yearly Canadian and U.S. sales figures for all these models by accessing the dropdown menu in the top right of this page. Last month's edition of this post is worth checking out, as is the November U.S. version. Keep scrolling for a look at Canadian sales figures of larger and/or more expensive luxury car sales.

BMW sold just as many 5-Series' sedans (and Gran Turismos?) in November 2011 as the company did in November 2010. This means that, despite increasing sales of its Mercedes-Benz rival, the 5-Series still found more new buyers than the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class combined

The much less expensive Acura TL was infinitely more popular than the Acura RL and also more successful than the 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz duo. Year-to-date, the E-Class/CLS-Class tandem tops all opponents. The Acura is 70 sales ahead of the BMW through eleven months. Acura Canada sales are down 11.8% this year but the $39,490 TL is up 6.8%. Presently, the TL can be leased over 25 months at an APR of 0.25% and Acura will pay the first $1000 worth of payments.

2012 Ford Mustang
What's stranger than the Audi A5 tying the Ford Mustang in monthly sales volume and the Scion tC absolutely crushing the Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, and Dodge Challenger? Well, Ilya Bryzgalov talking about the universe in a hockey interview is stranger, that's true. But isn't the Mustang supposed to be an absurdly popular American muscle car?

Yeah, it is, and the Mustang is also a tremendous value. It's better than ever. Yet through the first eleven months of 2011, Mustang sales in Canada are down 13.5%. That's in a market that's expanded, albeit slightly. The Mustang finished November three sales behind the declining Volkswagen GTI, 48 sales behind the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and 106 sales behind the Scion tC. Just to be clear, the Genesis Coupe and tC also beat the Dodge Challenger and the year-to-date-leading Chevrolet Camaro.

It would be nice to think this is just a temporary rejection of the Mustang. Perhaps supply is tight. And hey, who wants to buy a rear-wheel drive pony car in early winter, right? There are a bunch of holes in that theory. For starters, we already know this isn't a temporary Mustang rejection - sales have been down all year, in every month except January, April, and June. Much of Canada still isn't experiencing winter - it's 10°C in Halifax, Nova Scotia, right now and snow has fallen here once. As for supply and demand: can demand be high if a local Ford dealer is advertising a new Mustang with a $10,000 discount?

Keep scrolling for a look at November's Canadian sales figures for high-end sports cars and GTs. On the way you'll notice an awful lot of red font. Year-over-year sales declines, both in November and year-to-date, have been reported by the Audi A5, Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang, Mitsubishi Eclipse, Nissan 370Z, Porsche Boxster, Volkswagen GTI, and Volvo C70. Last month's version of this post can be viewed here; check out the November American edition while you're perusing.

In the luxury sporting car stratosphere, sales fluctuate wildly from one month to the next. However, for the last three months, BMW 6-Series sales have remained very healthy in Canada. With September's 30 to 26 in October and November 2011, the 6-Series has finished ahead of its main rivals for all fall.

That is likely to change when the sixth-generation Porsche 911 arrives with the force only a (rarely-optioned) 7-speed manual can deliver. Presently, 911 sales fell 39% in November and are down 7% this year. With three fewer sales, the 911 would have been in tight with the Audi R8 in November, perish the thought in Zuffenhausen.

Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we don't know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above.
