Porsche Canada 2010 Sales Figures

It seems like ages since GoodCarBadCar.net did a traditional Numbers post on any subject. "Recent" editions examined One Year With A Smart Fortwo and GM's Chevrolet Infusion In Korea. For this, a brief return to GCBC Numbers styles posting, a look at Porsche Canada's 2010 sales figures sounds like fun. 2010 was a record year for Porsche Cars Canada. 2036 Porsche vehicles found owners in the year ending on New Year's Eve, up 21% from 2009 levels. Porsche Cars Canada's previous record year was 2007 when 1987 vehicles were sold. The figures below all relate to 2010 calendar year sales in Canada unless otherwise noted.

-----

239.5 - percentage year-over-year increase in Porsche Panamera sales, although Porsche didn't have a full year of selling the Panamera in 2009 so growing the previous year's 114 sales wasn't a challenge.

16.9 - percentage year-over-year increase in Porsche Cayenne sales, thanks in no small part to the introduction of a better-looking second-generation Cayenne partway through 2010.

6.1 - percentage year-over-year increase in Porsche 911 sales, with growth coming from high-end models like the 911 GT3 RS.

22.7 - percentage year-over-year decrease in Porsche Cayman sales as two special editions disappeared and sales of the base Cayman and Cayman S fell 13.8% and 20.7% respectively.

20.2 - percentage year-over-year decrease in Porsche Boxster sales despite an additional 35 sales coming from the gorgeous Boxster Spyder.

21.1 - portion of overall Porsche Boxster sales, measured in percent, made up by the Porsche Boxster Spyder.

58 - portion of overall Porsche Cayman sales, measured in percent, made up by the Porsche Cayman S.

2.3 - portion of overall Porsche Cayenne sales, measured in percent, made up by the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid.

21.4 - portion of overall Porsche Panamera sales, measured in percent, made up by the Porsche Panamera Turbo.

4.4 - portion of overall Porsche 911 sales, measured in percent, made up by the basic Porsche 911 Carrera.

74.2 - percentage of overall Porsche Cars Canada sales not attributed to its most famous model, the 911.

84.6 - percentage of overall Porsche Cars Canada sales not attributed to its most famous model in December 2010.

173 - total Porsche 911 Cabriolet models sold in 2010, with the biggest convertible seller being the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet. 23 Targas were also sold in 2010.

118 - total Porsche Cayenne Turbo sales in 2010, 10 of which were of the Turbo S variety.

7 - total sales of the most basic Porsche Panamera, a car with an $86,600 pricetag.

279,500 - Canadian dollar MSRP of the 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS, one of which was sold in Canada in 2010. Not a single non-RS 911 GT2 was sold in 2010.

308 - total 911s sold in Canada in 2010 which were fitted with all-wheel drive.

54,900 - Canadian dollar MSRP of the least-expensive Porsche available, the basic 2011 Porsche Boxster, a vehicle which made up 3.5% of all Porsche Cars Canada sales in 2010.

0.39 - percentage of overall Porsche Cars Canada sales garnered by the Porsche Cayenne Transsbyeria in 2010.

330 - total sales of Porsche's best-selling specific model in 2010, the Porsche Cayenne S.

CANADA AUTO SALES DATA - JUNE 2010

4Matic
A Prince Edward Island vacation won't stop The Good Car Guy from supplying you with the Sales Stats to get you through the day. Behind the Graphs and segment-by-segment breakdowns, there's plenty of contextualizing and contemplating going on. Scroll down for a unique take on Canada's June 2010 auto sales picture.

Hyundai Canada sales were up 13.8% in June. Of course, that means sales climbed 13.8% from June 2009 to June 2010. What you won't hear so much about it is the drop from Hyundai's May 2010 sales (12,620) to Hyundai's June 2010 sales (11,501). May 2010 was Hyundai Canada's best month of all time, after all.

Honda and Acura suffered greatly in June. Canadian sales were down 14% overall. 92% of the Acuras and Honda sold in Canada in the month of June were built in North America. Honda builds the Civic, Ridgeline, and Odyssey in Alliston, Ontario, along with Acura's CSX, MDX, and ZDX.

An increase of 3 units helped BMW Canada to an all-time best June.

74.1% of all Mercedes-Benz vehicles (excluding smart) sold in Canada in June were equipped with 4Matic all-wheel drive.

Though not the most popular sedan to begin with, Subaru Legacy sales were up 382% in June. June 2005 had been Subaru Canada's best-ever Legacy month, but sales of the Legacy last month beat June 2005 by 107%.

Toyota Canada kindly pointed out in their monthly press release that June 2010 sales of the Lexus IS C, the two-door convertible version of the Lexus IS sedan, represented a best-ever month for the IS C. Wait a minute, though: Toyota Canada in its June 2009 sales release that the IS C "entered the Canadian market at the end of June". Therefore the fact that Lexus increased IS C sales by 59.3% (to 43) is nothing to write home about.

Nissan GT-R sales fell 81% in June. True, it's a low-volume car in a low-volume country; huge percentage swings are to be expected. Yet a decline from 21 GT-Rs in June 2009 to 4 GT-Rs in June 2010 is a sign that, yes, newer is better. The Audi R8 V10, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, Lotus Evora are just a handful of the newer cars which strongly desire a piece of the Nissan GT-R's pie. GT-R sales are off 44% in Canada through the first half of 2010.

Kia has been in Canada for 11 years. June 2010 was its best-ever month. The Kia Soul, a Good 12 winner, recorded higher monthly sales than ever before: 1,140. Sales of the Nissan Cube stand at 1,530 for the first half of 2010. In fact, while Soul sales jumped significantly in June, sales of Nissan's Cube dropped 48.6%.

An ageless wonder, the Jeep Wrangler is. Revamped and revitalized numerous times, the latest Wrangler is the best Wrangler. Canadian sales stand as terrific evidence of the Wrangler's desirability. Up 92.2% in June, sales of the true Jeep were better than any June in history at 1,238.

porsche boxster spyder
Porsche Boxster sales rose from 16 in June 2009 to 22 in June 2010 thanks mainly to the Boxster Spyder, another Good 12 winner. With 10 sales across Canada, the Boxster Spyder beat the Boxster S by 1 and the base Boxster by 7. Porsche sold 12 different versions of the 911 in Canada a total of 39 times, failing to successfully market all 17 911 derivatives. Incidentally, the basic 911 Carrera proved unpopular in June, putting up a big fat 0. But Porsche sold half a dozen 911 Turbo S hardtops and half a dozen and 911 Turbo S Cabriolets. The Good Car Guy's favourite 911, the GT3, found three homes while the hardcore GT3 RS beat that by two.

Porsche Canada's Panamera breakdown in June 2010 is as follows:
  • Porsche Panamera: 1
  • Porsche Panamera S: 3
  • Porsche Panamera 4: 18
  • Porsche Panamera 4S: 16
  • Porsche Panamera Turbo: 2

U.S. AUTO SALES DATA - JUNE 2010

mitsubishi galant
The Good Car Guy might be on vacation in Prince Edward Island, soaking up the sun and enjoying the dearth of traffic, but you're stuck in the office with a craving for more Sales Stats. Naturally, The Good Car Guy thought ahead and provided a healthy dose of interesting facts for you to enjoy. Keep on'a scrollin.

They say full-size SUVs aren't the trendy thang anymore. Well, how come Chevrolet sold 10,720 Suburbans and Tahoes in June in the USA? That's a 56.4% gain on June 2009's Suburban/Tahoe total, although a hefty drop from June 2008 when the Suburban and Tahoe combined to sell 15,975 units in America.

People have been talking about the Ford Mustang/Chevrolet Camaro sales battle. But these aren't niche products. Mustang sales in June were more than double what Mazda put up with the 6, greater than the figures of any individual Subaru model, better than the Ford Edge or Ford Expedition or Explorer or Flex or Ranger or Taurus. Chevrolet's Camaro, meanwhile, out-sold all of Cadillac's cars combined and beat Volvo - the whole brand - by 2,545 sales.

Every time Mitsubishi USA sold a Galant in June, Toyota dealers sold 71 Camrys.

Honda USA sold 1,848 Accord Crosstours in June. Its most direct competitor, the Toyota Venza, came close to doubling that figure with 3,512 sales. (The Venza is far more popular in Canada, 1,062 were sold in June north of the 49th parallel.)

Infiniti "truck" - the EX, FX, and QX56 - are less than three times less likely to be purchased or leased than an Infiniti "car" - the G37 and M37/M56. Acura "truck" - the MDX, RDX, and ZDX - was responsible for 5,464 sales in June, more than half of Acura's 10,839 sales. Lexus "truck" sales, thanks mainly to the RX and not so much the GX or LX, totalled 9,183 in June. Overall, Lexus sold 17,332 vehicles in the States last month.

Scion sold 3,745 vehicles in June. The xB was Scion's best-seller with 1,775 sales. The tC managed 1,137; the xD pulled in 833.

Though they didn't realize it, Suzuki and Bentley have been waging a fairly serious sales war. U.S. sales of the Suzuki Equator in June reached 119, beating Bentley by 3 vehicles. Through one half of 2010, however, Bentley is ahead of the Equator by 20, 688 to 668. The Equator's donor vehicle from Nissan, the Frontier, sold 2,920 in June; 18,429 year-to-date.

ford transit connect taxi
The Transit Connect is proving relatively popular for Ford. 2,136 sales is nothing to sneeze at, but it doesn't compare with total E-Series sales of 10,192 in June.

General Motors sold 112 Pontiacs in June 2010, down 99.5% from June 2009. Pontiac sold 33,683 vehicles in June 2007. Saab had nothin' doin' in June 2010.

Vehicles inducted into The Bad 8 v3.0 and The Bad 8 Supersize v2.0 average 1,283 sales in June in the USA. This figure doesn't take into account sales of certain vehicles which are specific models inside a nameplate: BMW 5-Series GT, Dodge Challenger SE, Hummer H2 SUT, Ford Explorer SportTrac, Nissan Versa sedan, and the Chrysler Sebring convertible. Although we can't include the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor or Ford Flex EcoBoost or two specific variations of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class or diesel versions of the Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen or the V8-powered Hyundai Genesis or Ford's Fusion Hybrid or the Sport Wagon edition of Cadillac's CTS or the base version of the Mini Cooper or Porsche's Boxster Spyder (unless you have that info)...... Good 12 winners averaged 3,669 U.S. sales in June. Clearly The Good Car Guy is responsible for GoodCarBadCar.net's picks selling at a faster rate than those which were berated publicly on GoodCarBadCar.net.

JUST HOW BIG IS THE 2011 MINI COUNTRYMAN?

2011 mini countryman
Some would say - perhaps even I have said - that the term, "SUV" doesn't make any sense in the context of BMW's Mini brand. Mini, as in "miniature", is renowned for its ability to build fun-to-drive small cars; small cars which are, in modern times at least, a cut above similarly-sized vehicles. Though Mini might stand for many things, from retro British style to performance to premium positioning, the brand stands for small above all else. Thus, a sport-utility vehicle, or Sports Activity Vehicle as BMW calls them, shouldn't fit.

But what if the Mini Countryman is the Mini of SUVs? Among regular vehicles, few cars are shorter or narrower or lighter than the Mini Cooper, particularly in the North American market. Couldn't Mini fulfill an identical mission in the SUV sector? Or does this theory lead down a dangerous path, the end of which is marked by a itty-bitty Ford F-150 competitor with round headlights and a Union Jack on the roof?

2011 mini countryman
Arguments were also made against BMW's first SAV, the X5. Mercedes-Benz aficionados weren't quite as frightened by the first M-Class, even if it did look like a minivan. Of course, Porsche was castigated for introducing the Cayenne. Yet by the time Audi delivered the Q7, the reaction wasn't negative, it was more, "Hurry it up, will'ya." Very, very, very few automotive brands are without some sort of SUV/SAV/CUV/crossover in their showrooms in 2010: Chrysler, Jaguar, Lotus, and smart being the only non-exoticar manufacturers found lacking. Mini debuting the Countryman is as obvious a next step as Jeep revamping the Grand Cherokee.

Still, the voices of naysayers will persist. Their voices likely won't be as loud as the soccer moms who want to cram a 7-year-old in the back of a stylish alternative to their.... ahem.... Honda CR-V. What do potential Mini Countryman owners have to look forward to? Well, get this, they can expect to find a really small trucklet - a Mini SUV, if you will. Shocker. Read on after the jump for an in-depth look at the Mini Countryman's dimensions.

2011 mini countryman
At 161.3 inches long, the 2011 Mini Countryman is 15.7 inches longer than a regular Mini Cooper and 13 inches shorter than a Volkswagen Tiguan.

At 70.4 inches wide, the 2011 Mini Countryman is 4.1 inches wider than a Mini Clubman and 5.7 inches narrower than a BMW X5.

At 61.5 inches tall, the 2011 Mini Countryman is 6.1 inches higher than a Mini Cooper 6.3 inches lower than a Ford Escape

With 5.86 inches of ground clearance, the 2011 Mini Countryman is an inch closer to the dirt than a Volkswagen Tiguan, even 1.4 millimetres closer to the ground than a Honda Fit.

2011 mini countryman
On a wheelbase of 102.2 inches, the 2011 Mini Countryman has 5.1 inches more space between the wheels than a Mini Cooper and 1.8 inches less space between the wheels than a Chevrolet HHR.

With a turning circle of 38 feet, the 2011 Mini Countryman requires almost 2 more feet to do a 360-degree turn than a Mini Clubman but a foot less than a Volvo XC60.

With 41.3 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity, the 2011 Mini Countryman has 17.3 cubic feet more storage space than a Mini Cooper and 31.6 fewer available cubic feet than a Honda CR-V.

ONE YEAR WITH THE SMART FORTWO - BY THE NUMBERS

smart fortwo goodcarbadcar
A couple weeks ago The Good Car Guy began looking back at One Year With The Smart. For the first time in its brief existence, GoodCarBadCar.net has hosted a long-term test car. Reviewing a 2009 smart fortwo pure for one year has produced some interesting revelations, some impressive statistics, and a whole lot of contentedness. This look back continues with a look at the Numbers.

-----

11,499 - kilometres travelled by GoodCarBadCar.net's long-term 2009 smart fortwo in its first year of service with GCBC.

3 - provinces in which GoodCarBadCar.net's long-term smart fortwo has been driven: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

6.45 - average fuel consumption over the course of one year, measured in litres per 100 kilometres. This is equal to 36.5 miles per gallon (U.S.) or 43.8 miles per gallon (Imperial). The 2009 smart fortwo has a 36 mpg combined rating from the EPA.

5.67 - best fuel consumption achieved between fill-ups of premium gasoline, occuring during gentle driving through Nova Scotia's country roads during an October vacation. 5.67L/100km is equal to 41.5 miles per gallon (U.S.), half an mpg above the EPA's highway rating.

smart fortwo black and white
8.8 - worst fuel consumption achieved between fill-ups of premium gasoline, occuring right before the tank on which the best fuel consumption was achieved. That's just 26.7 U.S. mpg. The next-worst was 7.5L/100km, a far more tolerable 31.4 mpg.

12 - people who have inhabited the passenger seat, though not all at the same time.

526.9 - greatest number of kilometres (327.4 miles) shown on the trip meter. The fuel gauge led us to believe there was nothing left despite the fact that a few litres could yet have been sipped. The tank holds 33 litres.

smart fortwo winter

35 - visits to gas stations in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia (stops were never required in New Brunswick) during the 52 weeks between July 7/2009 and July 7/ 2010.

0 - CDs, otherwise known as compact discs, inserted into the smart's CD player so far.

1.09 - average price, in Canadian dollars, paid for premium fuel over the last year.

1.155 - highest price, in Canadian dollars, paid for fuel (November 5/2009).

1.056 - lowest price, in Canadian dollars, paid for fuel (July 10/2009 and July 16/2009).

70 - approximate percentage of smart fortwo driving which took place in the city - the real city part of the city - of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

JUST HOW BIG IS THE DODGE CHALLENGER?

dodge challenger
GoodCarBadCar.net has been both kind and harsh in commenting on the Dodge Challenger. In V6 SE form, the Challenger appears weak-kneed and geared towards the same people who buy the Chrysler Sebring Convertible. Found to be neither powerful nor sporty, the Dodge Challenger SE was afflicted with a dose of The Bad 8 leading up to 2009. It'd still be there if it weren't for even worse cars.

But then there's the decent R/T and oh-so-appealing Dodge Challenger SRT8. Perhaps even better than the SRT8's overwhelming Hemi V8 engine is its sublime styling. An aggressive, shark-nosed front end marries the heavy-duty slab sides to an evocative rear that's all very retro but in a classy way.

Not until a Dodge Challenger drives by do you get a sense for its vast dimensions, however. The Challenger, my friends, is a mighty car; far larger than it should be; far larger than a truly sporty car can be. Okay, that's just The Good Car Guy's opinion, right? So how big is the 2010 Dodge Challenger? Have a look at the Numbers after the jump for a detailed breakdown.

197.7 - total length bumper-to-bumper, in inches, of the Dodge Challenger.

  • 9.6 inches longer than the 2011 Ford Mustang
  • 7.4 inches longer than the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro
  • 52.1 inches longer than the 2010 Mini Cooper
  • As long as 1 LeBron James, plus 1.47 more LeBron on top of the first LeBron

57.3 - total height, in inches, of the Dodge Challenger

  • Almost 2 inches taller than the 2011 Ford Mustang
  • 6.1 inches taller than the 2010 Porsche 911 Carrera S
  • Taller than 1,445 iPhone 4Gs stacked on top of one another

75.7 - total width, in inches, of the Dodge Challenger
  • Nearly 2 inches wider than the 2010 Chrysler 300
  • Half an inch wider than the 2010 Mercedes-Benz ML350 Bluetec
  • If The Good Car Guy laid out across the front of the Challenger, the Dodge would stick out an extra 4.5 inches

PRICE COMPARISON OF EVERY MUSTANG, CAMARO, AND CHALLENGER

Pony cars, or muscle cars if you prefer, are selling rather well of late. What better time is there to buy a sporty new American car than in the lead-up to the summer of 2010, as the American automotive industry reinvigorates itself, when the deals and temperatures are equally hot?

Brand loyalty is a difficult thing to decipher. Are there any Chevrolet enthusiasts in America who'd be willing to buy a 2011 Ford Mustang.... if the Mustang was the better car.... if the Mustang was the better cheaper car? Then there's the big 2010 Dodge Challenger, a car with style and horsepower to spare in SRT8 form; a car lacking in both departments when seen as the run-of-the-mill SE. Would a former Ford Mustang owner, or a young guy who grew up yearning for a Camaro, consider a Dodge Challenger?

Let's assume brand loyalty means nothing. For the purposes of this article we'll ignore acceleration times, our subjective style opinions, and the gs each car pulled on Car & Driver's skidpad. Think of pony car purchasing in a purely financial sense. Will it be the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, or Dodge's Challenger that ends up appealing to your bank account? Find out after the jump.

2011 HONDA CRZ REAL WORLD FUEL ECONOMY TESTED BY EVO

honda crz
In issue 144 of evo magazine, the Honda CRZ was put through its paces alongside the diesel-powered Seat Ibiza FR TDI and the Volkswagen Scirocco 1.4 TSI 160. Although evo's editors were keen on discovering the extent to which the honda CRZ would live up to its predecessor, the Honda CRX, evo also wondered what relation the CRZ would have to the first-generation Honda Insight. Performance and fuel economy were equally important parameters in this test.

evo stuck with the manufacturer's claims for specific acceleration and top speed tests but fuel efficiency was rigidly tracked. Thankfully, evo didn't just drive a few hundred miles before spitting out a figure. The three cars were tested on a "B-Road Blast", a hard drive on twisty roads; then on a highway "cruise"; and finally the "urban crawl". It goes without saying the Honda CRZ evo tested wouldn't be identically equipped to those North Americans will be able to purchase soon. Obviously the Volkswagen Scirocco and Seat Ibiza aren't even available to us. Nevertheless, the Numbers you can read after the jump don't lie.

Before you go any further, keep in mind these are translated figures, not the actual Numbers you'd see in evo 144. The Imperial gallon is equal to 1.2009499 U.S. gallons. MPG figures after the jump are based on U.S. gallons.

B-ROAD BLAST
Honda CRZ: 28.7 miles per gallon
Seat Ibiza: 25.6 miles per gallon
Volkswagen Scirocco: 22.4 miles per gallon

THE CRUISE
Honda CRZ: 36.2 miles per gallon
Seat Ibiza: 35.9 miles per gallon
Volkswagen Scirocco: 28.2 miles per gallon

THE URBAN CRAWL

GM TO BRING CHEVROLET TO KOREA - BY THE NUMBERS

General Motors announced yesterday that Chevrolet, the most famous and best-selling of its four brands, will be introduced in Korea next year. GM has been a player in Korea for a long time, especially since the American conglomerate took control of Daewoo in 2002. Daewoo, now GM Daewoo, had been affiliated with with General Motors for a long time, licensing the production of older GM models in decades past. This move to sell the Chevrolet brand in South Korea, however, isn't meant to replace Daewoo models but to coexist with the native Korean company.

For a small country, South Korea has a gigantic population. More than 50,000,000 people live on a peninsula smaller than the state of Virginia. Though that sounds like a perfect recipe for traffic jams - and it is - the Korean automotive market remains hugely active. In March, for instance, the best-selling car was the Hyundai i45. Known here as the Hyundai Sonata, the i45 sold 14,575 copies. That's only a few thousand fewer sales than Hyundai achieved with the Sonata in the United States last month. Clearly it would be beneficial for GM's largest brand to play in a burgeoning market.

So, Chevrolet is westward bound to the Far East. Although it's not exactly clear which models Chevrolet will attempt to sell in South Korea, one model that's definitely on the way is the Camaro. The Chevrolet Camaro has shared a showstand with GM Daewoo, and GM is using the Camaro in its promotional materials for this move to Korea.

South Korea will mark Chevrolet's 131st market when sales officially begin in 2011. For plenty more Numbers relating to Chevrolet's global impact, keep reading after the jump.

2010 DODGE RAM HEAVY DUTY WEIGHS AS MUCH AS...

Fuel economy wonks and Car & Driver subscribers know better than to go searching FuelEconomy.gov for the EPA ratings of very heavy vehicles. One such unsearchable vehicle would be the 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Laramie Mega Cab 4x4. Now Dodge.... or Ram, whichever happens to be the title of the day over at Fiat-run Chrysler, goes out of its way to share provisional estimated Environmental Protection Agency mpg figures with the public even though the Ram 2500's GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating, the maximum allowable weight of the vehicle when loaded) is above 8,500 pounds. See, the EPA's mandate doesn't include testing (or forcing manufacturers to test) heavy-duty vehicles.

How does the EPA draw the line between light-duty and heavy-duty? Since 1990, vehicles not required for testing are those with GVWRs above 8,500 pounds. The 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Laramie Mega Cab 4x4 has a minimum GVWR of 8,800 pounds.

That being said, Dodge - or is it Ram? - says the Ram pickup, with the 2500 chassis in Laramie trim and Mega Cab 4x4 configuration, should get between 13 and 18 miles per gallon. In the May issue of Car & Driver, the 2010 Dodge Ram achieved 14 miles per gallon. And though the 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Mega Cab 4x4 has a base curb weight of 6,683 pounds, in Laramie trim with a handful of options the Ram Mega Cab 4x4 weighs 7,560 pounds. Hole. Eeee. Jump. Ins.

Ford and General Motors aren't about to share fuel economy estimates on the heavy-duty versions of the Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado, and GMC Sierra, at least not on their websites. Not that Dodge is owed any applause for equipping a gigantic truck with an enormous inline-six diesel and finding out that said vehicle will travel 14 miles on a gallon of gasoline in "mostly urban driving".

In truth, any paragraph in this article consumed by talk of fuel economy is off subject anyhow. No, you ought to take another hard look at the potentially planet-shattering curb weight of a 2010 Dodge Ram.
