February 2013 Top 14 Best-Selling Pickup Trucks In America

2007 Chevrolet Avalanche LTZ orange
Sales Of The Defunct Chevrolet
Avalanche Still On The Rise
The majority of America's top-selling trucks posted significant year-over-year increases in February 2013. Sales of the best-selling Ford F-Series are on pace to make 2013 the best year since 2006. The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are being helped by attractive purchase incentives. The Toyota Tacoma is making hay now that challengers are disappearing like Mafia turncoats.

Americans registered 162,755 new pickup trucks in February 2013. 89.1% were full-size trucks, including 191 Cadillac Escalade EXTs and 2263 Chevrolet Avalanches. Of the remaining 17,807 trucks sold, 71% were Toyota Tacomas.

January 2013 Top 14 Best-Selling Trucks In America

2013 Chevrolet Avalanche
An Increasingly Large Number Of Buyers Are Scooping
Up Chevrolet Avalanches Before It's Too Late
America's truck market features a quickly shrinking number of nameplates to choose from. Ford Ranger? Dead. Mazda B-Series? Forgotten. Dodge Dakota? She gone. Suzuki Equator? We don't have January numbers yet, but small they will be.

This leaves 13 different pickup trucks available in the pickup-friendly United States. Two of those trucks are dying a slow death: the Chevrolet Avalanche (up 20% in January) and Cadillac Escalade EXT (up 59%) are undeserving of their sentences.

At the top of the heap in January sat, as usual, the Ford F-Series. Sales of America's best-selling vehicle jumped 22% to 46,841, but the F-Series was outsold by GM's twins - the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra - by 1450 units.

These were the 14 best-selling pickup trucks in America in January 2013 - click any model name in the table below to find historical monthly and yearly sales figures from both the U.S. and Canada.

2012 Year End Top 16 Best-Selling Trucks In America

2008 Dodge Dakota red double cab
The Dakota Was Not America's
Best-Selling Truck In 2012. Or Ever.
Ford sold more F-Series pickup trucks in America in 2012 than in any year since 2007.  Ford put a lickin' on General Motors - the F-Series outsold GM's twins by 69,819 units - and outsold Japan's best-selling truck bya count of 4.5-to-1.

Indeed, the best-selling Japanese truck was also the best-selling non-full-size truck. The Tacoma was up 28% this year with a little help from the Ford Ranger's disappearance. The Tacoma beat its bigger sibling, the Tundra, by 39,744 sales.

The worst declines were reported by defunct pickup trucks like the Ford Ranger, Suzuki Equator, and Dodge Dakota.

America's acquired a truckload of pickup trucks in December, as the six most popular all posted year-over-year gains. Eight of the top ten trucks sold more often in December 2012 than in December of 2011.

Of course the F-Series was America's top seller. And of course GM took this one last opportunity in 2012 to use its twin powers to outsell the F-Series, by 622 units.

The list you're interested in, however, is in this 2012 year end best-selling trucks post. And it's ready for your perusal.

November 2012 Pickup Truck Sales In America

2014 Chevrolet Silverado crew cab red
2014 GMC Sierra interior
15 pickup truck nameplates collected 154,369 U.S. buyers in November 2012. 36% of those sales occurred in Ford showrooms. Sales of Ford's F-Series jumped 18% last month. Year-to-date, the F-Series' growth of 12% is slightly below the overall industry's 14% gains, but it's hugely impressive nonetheless.

General Motors collected a total of 45,991 pickup truck sales in November 2012. That's 25% of the company's total U.S. volume. GM has improved incentives of late, but even with sufficient inventory, sales have been in decline. The trucks are old; this isn't surprising. But now that GM has shown the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and the 2014 GMC Sierra, it isn't going to get any easier to convince customers to buy the aging GMT900 truck twins, not if they can wait a few months for the much improved 2014s.

18% of the new pickup trucks registered in America last month were sold by import brands. Sales of the Honda Ridgeline, Toyota Tundra, and fifth-ranked Toyota Tacoma are all growing at an above-average clip this year.

October 2012 U.S. Truck Sales And Minivan Sales

2012 Ram Lonestar red
Americans registered 40,029 new minivans in October 2012. No minivan sold less frequently than the only mini-minivan on sale, Mazda's 5. Sales of the 5 are down 38% so far this year; September's 21% slide was only about half that bad. Year-to-date, the Kia Sedona - production of which has stalled - and Volkswagen Routan are also in decline.

The segment's three leaders are selling significantly better this year than they did in the first ten months of 2011. Overall, America's new vehicle market is up 14% in 2012. Chrysler's Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, as well as Honda's second-ranked Odyssey, are all up at least 22%.

Americans registered 165,732 new pickup trucks in October 2012. Nameplates we now know to be done for, five of the 16 available last month, accounted for 1.6% of all pickup truck sales. The vast majority of trucks were full-sizers hailing from Detroit (perhaps assembled elsewhere). The Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ford F-Series, and Ram P/U were responsible for 81% of all October pickup volume.

U.S. truck sales chart October 2012
Pickup Truck Sales Chart
For the Silverado and Sierra, October was the best U.S. sales month since last December. October was the fifth time this year that Ford sold more than 55,000 F-Series trucks in a single month, the fifth time Dodge sold more than 25,000 Rams, and the fourth time Toyota sold more than 12,000 Tacomas.

As will always be the case in the future, historic brand and corporate totals (monthly and yearly going back to 2002) are now available through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, along with results for more than 260 currently sold vehicles. That's where you'll find out that Ford's missing 37,838 Ranger sales from last year.
