Niche Car Sales And Niche SUV And Truck Sales In America - September 2010

The 2010 Toyota Prius was very nearly one of America's best-selling cars in September 2010, falling about 800 units shy of the Chevrolet Impala. News has surfaced which shows Toyota is more intent than ever on expanding the Prius brand, an act which should have benefits on sales of the original Prius model. The Prius's main competitor, meanwhile, sold once for every six or seven Prii sold in September.

In other uncategorized vehicle segment news, the Kia Soul continues to walk all over the Scion xB and Nissan Cube. Could the 2011 Nissan Juke throw a wrench into this trio? Who knows what the Nissan Juke can do? It's so.... weird and so.... wonderful. The Volkswagen Passat CC continues to out-sell the "regular" Volkswagen Passat sedan and wagon; by better than 3-to-1 in September. The 2011 Volkswagen Passat has been unveiled, but what North America receives isn't totally nailed down.

Jacked up off the ground, niche-market vehicles like the Toyota FJ Cruiser and Jeep Wrangler fared well in September 2010. U.S. sales of the FJ Cruiser were up 245% last month; Wrangler sales jumped by 1763 units. BMW X6 sales doubled compared with September 2009's Sales Stats, but in contrast with the BMW X5, America's best-selling European SUV, well, there's no comparison. Smart buyers are chose the more intelligent vehicle 6.5 times for every misguided X6 purchase.

Minivan Sales & Muscle Car Sales In America - September 2010

U.S. sales of the Chevrolet Camaro fell 20.6% in September 2010 even as sales of the 2011 Ford Mustang increased 17.1%. Problem for Ford was that Mustang sales in September 2009 weren't all that hot while 2010 Chevrolet Camaro sales in September 2009 were smokin'. Camaro sales, thus, fell from a very high level. Mustang sales rose, yes, but from not so high a place. Put simply, the Camaro beat the Mustang in September 2010. Moreover, the Camaro's lead over the Mustang through the first three-quarters of 2010 is 7654 units. You can bet that General Motors will be talking about their muscle car sales victory in January 2011.

Of note, Dodge Challenger sales are up 47% this year. There's talk of a new Dodge Viper being Alfa Romeo 8C-based, a theory which didn't hurt sales of the current Viper in September; up 158%. Declining sales (-30% in September 2010) of the far more popular Chevrolet Corvette aren't surprising to anyone who's been following the Corvette trend in 2010.

Boring ol' minivans are where higher volumes are found. Every van in the Graph below posted substantial increases over September 2009's figures, not a difficult task for the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan. September '09 wasn't friendly to those twins. Going unmentioned in the Minivan Sales chart are the Kia Rondo (111 sales), Nissan Quest (4 sales) and vans like the Ford Transit Connect, Ford E-Series, Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Together, 19,002 of these commercial-oriented vans were sold in September 2010.

Sporty Car Sales And Premium Sporty Car Sales In America - September 2010

Honda's August 2010 burst of 694 CR-Z sales wasn't a burst, after all. It was just the beginning. The 2011 Honda CR-Z found 1236 new buyers in September 2010 in the United States.

Forget what this means for Honda's hybrid reputation - Toyota Prius sales were 11,394 in September - and pay attention to what this may do for Honda's dwindling sporting reputation. The Prelude is dead, so is the S2000, and Honda's luxury division stopped selling the Acura RSX a while ago. The CR-Z is nowhere near as sporty as those cars, but as the modern alternative to the Honda CRX, the CR-Z sends a signal that Honda could.... could... be serious about making fun cars again. Just remember one thing, Honda's dominance in the Graph below comes with ignorance of the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Hyundai sold 3230 Genesis coupes and sedans in September, the breakdown isn't known.

What's with the Audi R8 vs Audi TT conundrum? The TT, Audi's volume-oriented BMW Z4 rival, was about as frequent a sale in September as the Zune. The Lamborghini-derived R8, now available as the V10-engined 2011 Audi R8 5.2, out-sold the TT by 20 units. Popular though the R8 is in its ultra-low volume segment, this ain't normal. Year-to-date the TT has the R8 beaten by 792 sales.

Volvo's C70 has also been relocated into the Sporty Car Sales chart, but not for its fast-growing sales. Year-to-date the C70 has posted a 15.1% decline; September 2010 Volvo C70 sales were down 8.4%. But declining sales were the order of the day at far more prestigious brands, too. Porsche 911 sales fell 55%. Combined Boxster/Cayman sales were down 34.4%. Sales of the usually much-loved Mercedes-Benz SL-Class dropped 44.7%. A new BMW 6-Series is on its way, a fact which partially explains the 6-Series' September sales drop of 88.8%. 6-Series sales are down by 805 units year-to-date.

Details, as always, are in the Graphs below.

Large Car Sales And Large Luxury Car Sales In America - September 2010

As already mentioned, the 2010 Jaguar XJ has been such a hit for Jaguar that the less-expensive and similarly-modern Jaguar XF is selling at lower volumes. XF sales were cut in half in September 2010, XJ sales jumped an astounding 707% over the old-style Jaguar XJ.

Still, the XJ is by no means the most popular car in its category. Mercedes-Benz S-Class sales in September were up 55.2% and the BMW 7-Series has the Benz beaten by 21 units year-to-date. The dreadfully ugly but wickedly rapid Porsche Panamera is a hot seller, too. Behind the Panamera by 2852 sales through the first three-quarters of 2010, the Jaguar won't be making up that gap before New Year's Eve. Then take into account the Lexus LS's 8827 sales. Ignore the Audi A8 - however desirable we paupers find it, the wealthy ignore it.

In the mainstream Large Car category, a Graph which The Good Car Guy also fills with the Cadillac DTS and Lincoln Town Car, it certainly helps to be domestic. Well, only four of the cars listed are Japanese or Korean, but still, it's interesting to notice that of the 48,339 non-premium large cars sold in the United States in September 2010, more than 40,000 were domestics. Strangely, Lincoln Town Car sales were up 149%, perhaps as a result of news that the next Lincoln limo will be the nasally Lincoln MKT. The Town Car wasn't much loved 'round here.

The facts also provoke me to ask the question: why did 4856 buyers choose the oddly-designed Nissan Maxima when the Infiniti G37 was available for $140.00 more? For the winter benefits of front-wheel drive? C'mon. In the U.S. sales war you knew nothing about, "Nissan Maxima vs Infiniti G37", the G37 sedan was left with only 3056 sales in September. G37 coupes bumped up the total thanks to an extra 1366 sales.

Midsize Car Sales And Midsize Luxury Car Sales In America - September 2010

For reasons as varied as the requirement of brevity and the lack of ability to engage readers on every topic, not every car listed in a GoodCarBadCar.net Sales Stats Graph is mentioned when it comes time to actually analyze the figures. For this September 2010 edition of Midsize Car Sales and Midsize Luxury Car Sales in America, that's gonna change. Below is a comment for each car involved. Just want the straight goods? Scroll down and have a look at the Graphs.

Saying "Volvo" and "wagon" together is like saying "Canada" and "hockey". It's just automatically assumed that there's greatness up in here. Then why doesn't Volvo sell more V70s (28 in September)? And the S80? Bore. Ing.

The 2011 Saab 9-5 is a looker, a uniquely designed Swedish-American-Dutch sedan that'll be the only car for certain midsize luxury buyers; not even thinkable as a potential purchase for others. Saab's former GM luxury partner, Cadillac, is still trying to sell the STS - and doing a better job of it in September 2010 than September 2009 - but it'll be cool if Spyker-owned Saab can get the 9-5 ahead of the STS in monthly sales figures.

The Lexus GS and ES, along with the Acura RL, are dull members of this field not worthy of acquiring nearly as many buyers as they do. The Acura TL's strange design at least makes it stand out. Same goes for the Lincoln MKS. Everybody knows the Hyundai Genesis is a favourite at GoodCarBadCar.net. The 2011 Infiniti M37 and M56 are appealing and far more deserving of a look than the outgoing models. Both fortunately and unfortunately for Jaguar, the XF was out-sold by the all-new Jaguar XJ in September. Good, in that the more expensive model sold at a fair clip. Bad, in that the less-expensive car needs greater volume to pull in revenue.

The Audi A6, all-new 2011 BMW 5-Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class are the most well-known global players in this class, though that's not reflected in American September sales. E-Class sales stand at 44,730 through September 30/2010.

As for the mainstream midsizers, greater Volkswagen midsize popularity is found in the Passat CC, parked, ironically enough, in the Niche Car Sales group on GCBC. Toyota Venza sales made up 3546 of the Camry/Venza tandem's 34,315 in September. Suzuki Kizashi, nobody wants you. The Subaru Outback is one of the most popular Japanese cars in America. Every new Nissan Altima I see makes me think the design is so 2002. Mitsubishi Galant sales fell 51.7% in September 2010. Don't laugh, Mazda: sales of the 6 fell 21.6%. The 2011 Kia Optima is going to jack Kia sales up another notch. Sales of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata shot up 161% in September, which is sayin' something, considering the fact that, had Sonata sales stayed level, it would still have been ahead of the 2011 Buick Regal, Optima, 6, Galant, Kizashi, Passat, and the 2999-units sold Legacy. Speaking of the Regal, @asianmartin is blaming the lack of popularity on GM's marketing.

You might not have exact figures on fleet sales percentages for the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger, but you, like me, know it's high. Mercury Milan sales won't be helping out the Ford Fusion for many months - will Fusion sales rise accordingly? 2507 of the Honda Accord's 24,127 sales are of the Crosstour variety. I'm working on a conspiracy theory that says Honda's price for the Crosstour ($29,670) is what Honda pays you, not the other way around. How else to explain 2507 purchases of that thing? Finally, the Chevrolet Malibu: year-to-date sales are up 37.2%.

Compact Luxury Car Sales And Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales In America - September 2010

In the automotive market that is the United Kingdom, where new vehicle sales totalled 335,246 in September 2010, sales of the BMW 1-Series reached 5896. Follow me here: in the United States of America, where new vehicle sales totalled 959,049 in September 2010, BMW 1-Series sales reached 1155. In other words, the market with triple the sales had just one-fifth the 1-Series sales. You find this interesting? Of course you do, that's why you're staring at Graphs which tell the story of America's small luxury automotive Sales Stats for one specific month in 2010.

The relative affinity Brits hold for the 1-Series has nothing to do with the hatred Americans have for BMW. No way. The United States looooves BMW. The iconic 3-Series, one size up from the 1-Series in BMW's showroom, is America's best-selling luxury car. In fact, somewhat successful direct competitors of the 3-Series fall way behind the popular BMW in overall sales.

Take, for instance, the 2011 Audi A4, now on sale. You see lots of them around, right? The A4 is known to be a good car. In fact, The Good Car Guy even placed the A4 Avant in 2009's The Good 12 v2.0. And the A4 Avant's Teak Brown Metallic paint was profiled here a few days ago. Well, A4 sales fell 18% in September 2010 and stand at "just" 25,929 through the first nine months of 2010. BMW 3-Series sales were up 37.1% in September 2010. Through the end of last month, BMW had 73,395 3-Series under its belt.

Why do Brits love the 1-Series, then? Well, in all honesty, the 3-Series was one of the UK's best-selling cars in August, paving the way for the 1-Series to be #10 in September. But UK new car buyers are also offered two other 1-Series bodystyles. Engines galore. Different trim lines. Diesels. Besides, British buyers are even more badge-snobbish than Americans. Thus, if an extra £1000 nets you a basic 1-Series instead of an up-trim Focus, they'd choose the BMW every time. Popular though the 3-Series may be in the United States, its sales don't compare well with the best-selling mainstream compacts in America.

Subcompact Car Sales And Compact Car Sales In America - September 2010

Joined by 516 sales of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze in September, the gradually-deceasing Chevrolet Cobalt's total last month makes it look like "General Motors" and "small car" go together like, well, "General Motors" and "small car". But wait, the Cruze is supposed to be a really nice car. October should tell a very different story. Even so, don't be surprised if buyers don't respond favourably (at first) to a GM small car without huge incentives.

Cars of this type, both compact and subcompact, had a difficult road to tred in September 2009. Cash For Clunkers was over, and in the month prior, sales had spiked as most people who wanted a new fuel-efficient car got one in the month of August. To see September 2010 sales improve upon September 2009's totals should surprise no one. That being said, Toyota Corolla/Matrix sales were down last month and are down year-to-date, as well. Suzuki SX4 sales were down 38.8% in September 2010. Kia Rio sales were down 41.7% last month. Other than those cars and the currently-changing-over Cobalt, every single subcompact and compact car on sale in America improved on last year's figures.

Which, you know, says something about the Corolla's performance, in particular, something Toyota might not care about since the Corolla/Matrix was the best-selling small car in America in September 2010.

As for the 2011 Ford Fiesta, which of course wasn't on sale last year, sales have yet to reflect any efforts by Ford Motor Company to find more stock for North American dealers. This comes along with news yesterday that the Ford Fiesta is the best-selling car in the UK - again - with over 19,000 sales. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's over 19,000 Fiestas that somehow made it to UK Ford stores, unravaged by hurricanes and bad railways and bodystyle selections (ahem... no ugly sedans?) which didn't reflect potential buyers' tastes. Ford would've needed to more than double sales of the Fiesta in the U.S. last month just to be number two in the segment.

Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs In America - Through September 2010

A great number of factors come into play when a bunch of large, expensive vehicles sell a a faster rate one year than during the year previous. Incentives, of course, can play a part. Falling gas prices could do the trick. An improving economic situation for the wealthy among us? Yeah, that might have an effect, too.

The 2011 Land Rover Range Rover has a base price of $79,685. 2010 sales are up 15.4%. In fact, the Land Rover family's basic price of entry is $36,350, which nets you a 2011 Land Rover LR2. In 2008, Land Rover sold 8885 SUVs in the first nine months of 2008. That number improved to 18,385 over the first nine months of 2009. So far in 2010, 22,289 Land Rovers have been sold. Point to whatever factor you like, but one way or another, a whole lot of wealthy people are buying a lot of expensive vehicles.

Moreover, the percentage sales improvements posted by some other large, expensive SUVs are even greater plus they come with higher volumes.

Fact: through three-quarters of this year, Mercedes-Benz has sold over 50,000 SUVs in the United States. Call'em crossovers if you like, Mercedes has still sold over 50K. In other words, Mercedes-Benz has more SUV sales in America this year than all of Volvo's models combined.

These are the Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs In America over the course of the first nine months of 2010.

#10 - Land Rover Range Rover: 6355 ......... +15.4%

Top 10 Best-Selling European Cars In America - Through September 2010

The lower volume levels at which most luxury automakers play necessitate the acceptance of significant year-over-year percentage changes. Some years, a Germany-based luxury automaker can flaunt huge gains, like Mercedes-Benz's 67.3% improvement in E-Class sales in 2010. For others, like Audi with their A4, a significant 7.3% drop is to be accepted as part of doing business on the high-dollar playing field. "Wait for the new model", they'd say.

What makes this somewhat hard to believe is the impact Volkswagen has (or doesn't have) on the American automotive landscape. Like crop circles which show up rarely but manage to steer the public conscience anyway, Volkswagen's total sales volume in the United States is less than the sales of Honda's Civic so far this year. Despite these paltry numbers, Volkswagen's always the talk of the town. Whether it's the all-new and much cheaper 2011 Volkswagen Jetta or a new diesel engine for the Touareg SUV, Americans love to discuss Volkswagen. They just don't love buying them.

Of course, Volkswagen's plans for the aforementioned 2011 Jetta include much, much higher sales volume. More car for less money should work, right? After that, a replacement for the mucho-expensivo Passat will be supposedly more in keeping with American tastes. Volkswagen intends to be the planet's largest automaker.

To do so, the company will need to fare a lot better in the planet's most car-crazy nation. The regular Passat needs to find its way onto the list you see below. There shouldn't be so many luxury cars in the gap between the Jetta and other VWs. And the Top 10 Best-Selling European SUVs In America list probably needs a great Volkswagen presence, as well.

And one more thing: if your Volkswagen was built in Mexico, it's still a European car.

#10 - Volkswagen New Beetle: 14,747 ... +26.6%
#9 - Volkswagen Passat CC: 20,893 ...... +37.6%
#8 - Volkswagen Golf: 22,225 ............ +97.8%
#7 - BMW 5-Series: 24,476 ................. -17.6%
#6 - Audi A4: 25,929 ......................... -7.3%
#5 - Mini Cooper: 34,588 .................... -1.2%
#4 - Mercedes-Benz E-Class: 44,730 ...... +67.3%
#3 - Mercedes-Benz C-Class: 46,160 ...... +17.1%
#2 - BMW 3-Series: 73,395 .................. +9.2%
#1 - Volkswagen Jetta: 87,107 ............. +7.3%

Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese SUVs In America - Through September 2010

There was a time when soft, car-based, "cute-utes" with limited off-road capabilities were mocked. The "SUV" label didn't apply; the term "crossover" hadn't yet been coined. Now everybody and their dog drives a soft, car-based cute-ute. Most people choose a Japanese version.

Oh, Japan can do tough and rugged as well. In fact, the 2010 Toyota 4Runner was a return to the 4Runner of old. Square-jawed and proficient in all types of 4x4ing, the new 4Runner has been attracting way more clientele than the old model. Still, if a popular and respected Japanese utility vehicle is what you're after, rugged ain't it. The Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, and Subaru Forester are cars on stilts, and all the better for it.

Here are America's Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese SUVs. Call'em CUVs or crossovers if it makes you feel better.

#10 - Toyota 4Runner: 33,177 ... +153.8%
#9 - Acura MDX: 33,187 ............ +58.9%
#8 - Nissan Murano: 40,803 ......... +4.0%

#6 - Subaru Forester: 64,121 ....... +6.0%
#5 - Lexus RX: 67,896 ............... +4.4%
#4 - Nissan Rogue: 71,765 ......... +20.4%
#3 - Honda Pilot: 76,224 ........... +23.7%
#2 - Toyota RAV4: 126,391 ........ +18.8%
#1 - Honda CR-V: 144,286 .......... +1.4%

Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese Cars In America - Through September 2010

That which makes a Japanese car Japanese is not its place of manufacture. For one thing, parts come from all... er, parts. The design was not completed and signed off at the factory. And the company that receives the profit at the end of the day didn't build its global headquarters in the middle of Ohio.

So despite the fact that many of these cars (and eventually probably all of these cars) are American-made, they're Japanese. Why? Because the logo on the grille represents a Japanese company. This is why The Good Car Guy would (perhaps) even argue that the Saab 9-2X was Swedish. Perhaps.

Regardless of your take, here are America's Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese Cars. Take note of the declining sales of each Toyota model on the list. Clearly, in a year where auto sales were bound to rise, all that Recall stuff Toyota suffered through early on in the calendar was hurtful.

#10 - Subaru Outback: 66,384 ......... +95.0%
#9 - Nissan Sentra: 71,540 ............... +9.8%
#8 - Nissan Versa: 76,736 ............... +20.4%
#7 - Mazda 3: 83,111 ..................... +9.6%

#3 - Toyota Corolla/Matrix: 209,186 .... -2.3%
#2 - Honda Accord: 235,631 .............. +6.9%
#1 - Toyota Camry: 250,830 .............. -4.7%
