November 2012 Sporty Car Sales And Premium Sporty Car Sales In Canada

2013 Scion FR-S red rear angle
Lexus Canada sold twice as many ISF sedans in November 2012 than in November 2011. In November 2011, three were sold. In November 2012, six were sold.

The totals are small, but be thankful Lexus tells us the totals at all. Most companies don't share such specific sales data: you won't see BMW M3 sales listed here or Benz C63 AMG numbers, either. Volkswagen Canada doesn't even share GTI figures like they did just a few months ago.

Elsewhere at Toyota, the Scion FR-S outsold Scion's own tC by 30 units and despite having only been on sale since June, the FR-S is but 132 sales behind the less costly tC on a year-to-date basis. In otherwords, the FR-S is hugely important to Scion, both from a volume and profit perspective. It is now one of the brand's two most popular models in North America, and Scion charges more for the FR-S than any other of its products. Not surprisingly, the FR-S produces 2.8 times the volume of its Subaru twin, the BRZ.

We spent some time last month discussing the Audi A5's Canadian success and the small role American muscle cars play in Canada. Fast forward: not only did the A5 outsell the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro in November 2012, it outsold the Ford Mustang, too.

Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we don't know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above.

November 2012 Large Luxury Car And Large Luxury SUV Sales Figures

2013 Porsche Panamera V6 Ruby Red
Yikes. An Ugly Red Car With Red Wheels?
Audi, BMW, Lexus, and Porsche posted huge year-over-year Canadian sales increases with their flagship sedans in November. Of course, these are very low-volume cars, and massive gains - 89%, 160%, 84%, and 156%, respectively for the A8, 7-Series, LS, and Panamera - translate to relatively small volume increases.

In November 2012, the A8 brought in an extra eight sales for Audi compared with November 2011. BMW rather fittingly added 77 sales via the 7-Series. Lexus LS sales improved by 16 units. Porsche sold 25 more Panameras last month than in the same period a year earlier.

This doesn't mean the cars aren't huge sources of profit for luxury automakers. But in terms of the cars you see on Canadian roadways, the eight cars from the first table below accounted for just 0.27% of all the new vehicles sold in Canada in November 2012.

In the second table you'll see the significantly more popular large luxury SUV category. Between the GL-Class and very rare G-Class (there is no available breakdown between the two models), Mercedes-Benz found 189 buyers for their biggest SUVs, triple the number achieved by Mercedes-Benz's biggest sedan and its coupe sibling.

November 2012 Pickup Truck Sales In Canada

2014 Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab red
Chevy's 2014 Silverado Frightens Horses
21,149 new pickup trucks were registered in Canada in November 2012. 34% of those trucks were Ford F-Series pickups. In all, 90% of the trucks sold last month were Rams, GMs, or Fords.

41% of the other 10%, all of which were trucks built by Japanese automakers, were Toyota Tacomas. Only 38 of the Tacoma's 897-unit total were rear-wheel-drive trucks. Only 13 of the Toyota Tundra's 555-unit total were rear-wheel-drivers.

Ford doesn't break down F-Series sales by drivetrain or bodystyle. If GM's results are anything to go by, it's not hard to see that crew cabs play a major role in the modern truck market. 62% of all GMC Sierras and 60% of all the Chevrolet Silverados sold in Canada in the first eleven months of this year were crew cab models. In fact, in GM's Canadian showrooms, where truck sales are slowing, crew cab sales are way up.

November 2012 Commercial Van Sales In Canada

Canada November 2012 commercial van sales chart
Click Chart For Larger View
Canadian business (and maybe even a few families) registered 2549 cargo and personnel-carrying vans in November 2012, a huge 45.7% improvement compared with November 2011. This all occurred despite the fact that the best-selling commercial van, Ford's soon-departing E-Series, slid 24% on a year-over-year basis.

GM's twin vans took over as the two best sellers, Ford's Transit Connect came within twelve sales of overtaking the E-Series, and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter's leap brought the German within 43 sales of tying the usual top-selling Ford.

Through the first eleven months of 2012, the Ram Cargo Van is Chrysler Canada's 16th-best-selling model. The NV ranks eleventh among Nissan brand vehicles, ahead of the Xterra, Quest, Armada, 370Z, Cube, Leaf, and GT-R (in that order). The Sprinter sells more often than all but four Benz model ranges. Among the whole Ford Motor Company, the E-Series ranks eighth in volume; the Transit Connect eleventh, ahead of the Flex, Expedition, and every Lincoln. Meanwhile at General Motors, the Express generates greater volume than all but eleven models; the Savana is 13th, right behind the GMc Acadia.

November 2012 Minivan Sales In Canada

2012 Kia Rondo molten red
From third last month, the Kia Rondo moved up to the second slot in November, right behind the Dodge Grand Caravan, Canada's best-selling minivan.

Canadians registered 7600 new minivans in November 2012. From a Chrysler Canada market share perspective, it was most definitely not the absurdly dominant month to which the company is accustomed. "Only" 47% of the minivans sold in Canada last month were built in Windsor, Ontario. Year-to-date, Windsor-built vans own 54% of the minivan market.

Mini-minivans were responsible for 31% of the category's November 2012 volume. Those three vans - the Rondo, Chevrolet Orlando, and Mazda 5 - accounted for just 14% of a much smaller overall minivan market a year ago. Canada's minivan market was up 16% in November.
