TOP 5 INTERESTING FACTS & FIGURES FROM APRIL 2009'S GLOBAL AUTO SALES STATS

Attempts to force GoodCarBadCar.net back onto the typical Lowdown or $$$ Mondays, Top 5 Tuesdays, 3 To Beat Wednesdays, Numbers Thursdays and Across The Pond Fridays have been difficult withthe move of GoodCarBadCar Towers and an ignited effort of TGCG at hypercube.ca. This being Tuesday, however, and a day near the beginning of the month (Happy Cinco de Mayo), The Good Car Guy is intelligent enough to connect a Top 5 with Sales Stats.

Read on for the most fascinating and/or ironic facts related to the sale of automobiles around the world.

    -----

#5 - 73.70% @ SUZUKI USA: During the 30 days of April/2008, Suzuki sold 9,669 vehicles. This year, the same number of selling days (26) resulted in just 2,543 vehicles sold to American consumers.

#4 - 3,154 @ TOYOTA USA: With sales down 42,19%, on average, Toyota sold 3,154 fewer cars each day in April of 2009 than they could muster in April of '08 when 7,475 vehicles exited dealer doors across America each day.

#3 - 8,595 @ BUICK CHINA: All tolled, General Motors sales in Canada were down 23.6% to 29,476. Buick sales in China were up a hugely significant 63.6%, taking Chinese Buick sales to 38,071. That makes GM's Buick division better in China than all of GM is in Canada to the tune of 8,595 extra vehicles.

#2 - 203,000 @ TATA: So far, approximate sales revenue from the Tata Nano $512,600,000 on sales of 203,000 Tata Nanos in India.

#1 - 184,706 @ TOTAL FRANCE: While total French "light-vehicle" sales were down 7% compared with April of last year, Citroen (+1.8%), Suzuki (+3.1%), Hyundai/Kia (+6.1%) Dacia (+15.2%), Volkswagen (+16%) Audi (+20.7%), and Seat (+23.7%) posted gains. BMW sales in France were shot through the floor (-43.9%) while Opel fared slightly better with a year-over-year drop of 41.2%.

WATCH TATA NANO TEST DRIVE WITH JAGUAR XFR

Forgettable though this fact is, the original Volkswagen Beetle wasn't the much-loved car we know it to be when it first debuted. That's no attempt at suggesting the diminutive Tata Nano will sell on the scale of the Type 1 or be the cultural success, either. Simply put, GoodCarBadCar.net is reserving the right to hold off too much opinion-spewing until the Tata Nano has been received or seen by more North Americans. In the clips below, two drivers take test drives in the Tata Nano, which we must add, is very different to the Jaguar XFR (also seen in video below) at the opposite end of Tata's automotive spectrum.

    WATCH TATA NANO PRODUCTION DEBUT

Ratan Tata has again revealed his company's 1 lakh car, the Tata Nano, in a massive display to the media. After delays which struck the company as a result of farmers and the original manufacturing site, the Nano is only going "on sale" at the beginning of April but won't be delivered until early summer. That's about six months behind schedule. Nevertheless, thousands of Indians will almost certainly be pleased with the likelihood that, in a couple months, their family can move off the scooter and into a car for just $2,500. Watch CNN's coverage of the Nano debut below.

ACROSS THE POND - TATA NANO

From the first week of April, residents of India will be able to purchase a Tata Nano for about 100,000 rupees. That's the equivalent of $1,958.74 USD as I type. The Nano isn't pretty, but it is the product of a massive industrial conglomerate that reaches from Tetley Tea to Jaguar and Land Rover automobiles. For The Good Car Guy's indivualized spec sheet of the new Tata Nano, keep reading.

    $2.7B + $2.5B = $2.3B? FORD SELLS UP

It's official....aly depressing for Ford's accountants. Tata, a gigantic Indian industrial conglomerate, has purchased two historic and evocative British automotive brands from Ford Motor Company.

Ford paid $2,500,000,000 for Jaguar back in 1989. Ford paid $2,700,000,000 for Land Rover in 2000. With an approximate inflation adjustment, Ford's $2.5B into Jaguar works out to around $4.3B now, and the $2.7B it cost Ford to snag Land Rover from BMW works out to about $3.3B now. Ish.

So if you want to make Ford look really, really, really bad, figure the math like this: Ford paid $7,600,000,000 for Jaguar and Land Rover and sold the two as a set for $2,300,000,000. Ford's beancounters say, "Umph!" Ratan Tata says, "Result."

Ford is even going to contribute $600,000,000 to employee pension funds. Thankfully, Tata is leaning towards maintaining the current workforce level in the UK of 15,300 workers.

As of 9:17am EST, Ford's "Global Sites" still included Jaguar and Land Rover. Who knows, they could be there for a while. Awkward.

    AUTO NEWS VIA QUOTES

"Mercedes-Benz is the taxicab of choice in Germany, which shows if you have the right products, being the airport car won't hurt you." Ford President of the Americas, Mark Fields, speaking to the fact that Lincoln could attain limo+cool status.

    "
America has never been more ready for a car like this." smart USA President, David Schembri, speaking at the delivery to one of smart's first American customers.

"I think Chrysler has cut a lot."
United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger believes that new labour agreements should be enough to stave off more cutbacks at American automakers.

"...we know what we're doing when it comes to combining industry-leading safety with industry-leading value." John Krafcik, a Hyundai VP, after noting that Hyundai produces more IIHS Top Safety Picks than BMW, Mercedes-Benz, or Toyota.

"I feel more than happy with today." Former two-time F1 champ Fernando Alonso after his first day of testing back at Renault.

"We are in discussion with Tata Motors on dealers and distribution of these brands. We are looking at an interesting set up." Alfredo Altavilla, Vice-Chairman of Fiat India speaks of Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Ferrari being introduced in the world's second-largest nation.

"Everyone wants to pollute less; that's a no-brainer. What we've heard from our customers is if Bentley can be socially responsible that would be a positive.'' Bentley spokesman David Reuter figures the ultra-rich are about as socially conscious as the rest of us.

"Everybody at Rolls-Royce is delighted with this tremendous result which marks our fifth anniversary in the best possible way." Rolls-Royce's CEO, Ian Robertson, appears to ignore the multiplicity of decades prior to BMW's Rolls-Royce, but is happy with a worldwide sales increase of 25% and total Indian sales of eleven.

"We don't look at this as a car ad as much as we look at it as a statement." Scott Keogh, VP of Marketing at Audi, plays up the importance of Audi's Paramount Pictures-produced Super Bowl ad.

    THE TATA XJR?

Consider it a safe assumption that you'll never see an XJR, XK, or XF rebadged as a Tata. Reports are also pushing speculation into safe assumptions that Tata is about to land Jaguar and Land Rover for $2,000,000,000, however.

Time the purchase of Ford Motor Company's remaining British outposts with the debut of a $2,500 People's Car, too. Then again, the Tata Group also owns hotels with rates as high as $2,795 per night in Mumbai, charter planes for Bollywood stars, and high-end jewellery stores, in addition to Tetley Tea, Tata AIG Life, Tata Cummins, and Tata McGraw Hill. Head honcho Ratan Tata says that when a company is bought by the Tata Group, things remain the same, "except now it's owned by someone in India".

If Tata truly is successful in this purchase, we should hear by the end of 2007. Another Indian company, Mahindra & Mahindra, was a bidder for Jaguar, along with One Equity Partners.

For Jaguar bosses, the worst part of the news is the extra 1,000 miles in their commute to company headquarters. India is a lot farther away than Michigan.
