Canada Midsize Car Sales - February 2013

2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid venetian red pearl
The Ford C-Max outsold the Toyota Prius V by six units in Canada in February 2013. The Ford, which GoodCarBadCar reviewed a couple weeks ago, is now two sales ahead of the Prius V through two months. The V, remember, sells more frequently than the conventional Prius in Canada. Toyota Canada sold 176 Camry Hybrids in February; 352 this year.

Hybrids are doing more and more for manufacturers competing in Canada. Mainstream sedans obviously have a greater impact, volume-wise, than high-tech green cars like the Chevrolet Volt. The Malibu, which doesn't sell half as often as the class-leading Ford Fusion, sold eleven times more often than the Chevrolet Volt in February.

This isn't a mark on the Volt, nor does it say anything about the future impact of plug-in cars. But you come here to find out what has happened. And despite its intriguing electric capabilities, the Volt's high price means it hasn't been able to compete with normal sedans like the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, and Hyundai Sonata, top-selling midsize sedans which are or will soon be available in hybrid form.

Speaking of which, the class leader has built up quite a lead over its rivals early in 2013. Ford Fusion volume in Canada through February is 25% stronger than Hyundai Sonata volume.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these vehicles can be accessed by clicking a model name in the sortable tables below or by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page. You can rank vehicles by year-to-date volume or February sales or by year-over-year change by clicking column headers in any of the lists. Click the accompanying chart for a larger view. And feel free to make suggestions on how GCBC should break down Canada's midsize category.

February 2013 Midsize Car Sales In America

2013 Ford C-Max Ruby Red front angle
The Ford C-Max Has Been Able To Outsell
The Toyota Prius V Without Too
Much Trouble. The Original Prius Isn't
So Easy To Knock Off Its Perch.
It's supposedly lonely at the top, but apparently not in February, not in the U.S. midsize car segment. The Camry accounted for 23% of the 140,006 cars sold by the seven leading midsize nameplates in America in January. The seventh-place Kia Optima trailed with 8%.

In other words, the Camry was way out in front, 7973 sales in front of the second-ranked Honda Accord and 20,645 sales ahead of the Optima.

Of the 158,888 sales sold by the same seven leading cars in February, the Camry was responsible for 20%, a three percentage point drop. The Optima's share was only a hair better. The Camry was just 3271 units ahead of the Accord in February. And the Accord's lead over the next two best-selling models, the Ford Fusion and Nissan Altima, shrunk to just 124 and 274 units, respectively.

As you can see in the chart, the leaders of the pack didn't suffer through a lonely February, not at all. With the Camry stumbling, Toyota will stir up incentives in March in order to expand the car's lead over its closest midsize competitors. Prius sales are also sliding, but don't expect Toyota to let that decline linger.

Compare the Ford C-Max (which GoodCarBadCar is testing this week) with the Toyota Prius V if you must. It's quite a bit smaller and quite a bit more attractive. The Ford outsold the Prius V by 605 units in what was, for Toyota, a down month for its bigger Prii. The original Prius, however, still outsold the C-Max by a 3.6-to-1 count in February.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these vehicles can be found by clicking a model name in one of the tables below. You can also make a selection at GCBC's Sales Stats page. Nine of America's 20 best-selling passenger cars are represented in this post, total sales of which (excluding the not terribly Prius-derived Prius C) accounted for 19.4% of new vehicle sales in America in February 2013.

January 2013 Midsize Car Sales In Canada

2013 Suzuki Kizashi Blaze Red
It's not exactly the order you'd expect. January 2013 Canadian midsize car sales results showed the Suzuki Kizashi outselling the Subaru Legacy. The Mazda 6 outsold the Kia Optima, Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu, Dodge Avenger, and Volkswagen Passat, not to mention the Kizashi and Legacy. Toyota's Prius V outsold the Honda Insight, Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Volt, and Toyota Prius Plug-In, and did so with 31 units to spare.

And the Ford Fusion was Canada's top-selling properly midsize car in January, outselling 2012's best seller, the Toyota Camry, by 473 units. The Camry fell to fourth spot, behind the surging Honda Accord and the Hyundai Sonata, which recorded its best January ever, a feat Hyundai Canada accomplished with the Santa Fe last month.

Sales of the Camry Hybrid rose 7.3% to 176 in January 2013, equal to 22.3% of overall Camry sales.

Toyota Canada is generous with model breakdowns. There are hybrid versions of numerous other midsize cars, but sales figures for those hybrids aren't made available, sadly.

You'll notice a change in the way midsize cars are separated in the tables below, tables which are now sortable. You can click the accompanying chart to see all these vehicles lumped into one pot. January 2013 Midsize Car Sales In America

2013 Dodge Avenger Red
The Dodge Avenger Outsold The Generally
More Popular Chrysler 200 In January 2012
In January 2013, America's new vehicle market grew 14% compared with January 2012. Numerous midsize cars, including the Chrysler 200; Dodge Avenger; Ford Fusion; Honda Accord; and Volkswagen Passat, reported increases significantly greater than the overall market's improvement.

Many others, including the Buick Regal; Mazda 6; and Honda Insight, posted dreadful year-over-year declines. Buick Regal volume has been eaten alive by the Buick Verano. The Mazda 6 is about to be replaced. The Honda Insight hasn't found more than 1000 buyers since March of last year; not more than 2000 since April 2011.
