September 2012 Sporty Car Sales And Premium Sporty Car Sales In Canada

2013 Volkswagen GTI Cabriolet red
Whatever the presence of this car says about the future of the Volkswagen Eos in North America, what's most frustrating about Volkswagen Canada (from a sales analyst's persepective) is the move the company's made away from releasing detailed sales results.

Even as the U.S. division reported separate data for the Passat, old Passat wagon, and the CC, Volkswagen Canada insisted on releasing information only for the overarching Passat nameplate. As if that wasn't bothersome enough, around the same time Volkswagen of America began issuing sales reports for the Golf R, Volkswagen Canada stopped separating the Golf and GTI numbers. We can only assume that if Volkswagen began selling the Golf Cabriolet in Canada once again, the Eos's days may be numbered. And separate sales info for the Golf and Golf Cabrio would likely not appear.

Venting complete, let's talk about what we do know. After all, Honda doesn't release separate data for the Si-branded Civic, Mazda doesn't offer a 3/Speed3 breakdown, and Impreza sales and Impreza WRX sales are tallied together as one car at Subaru. So perhaps we should give Volkswagen a break.

Volkswagen's premium Audi division sold 184 A5s in September 2012, up 25% from the same period of a year ago. A5 sales are down slightly this year. The TT, on the other hand, was down 24% in September but is up slightly this year. In the German sports car/roadster arena, Mercedes-Benz leads the year-to-date standings with 452 sales.

The TT's in second spot, the BMW Z4 in third, and Porsche's rising Boxster remains stuck in fourth. The initial Boxster surge which was felt in the summer (65 were sold in June and July) has given way to more realistic volume in August and September. Combined, these four cars and the Porsche Cayman found 98 buyers in Canada last month. The aforementioned Audi A5 was nearly twice as popular as that whole quintet. Oh practical concerns.

Porsche 911 sales dropped 18.5% in September 2012, nearly endangering its status as the top dog in the elite VW Group sports car family. Audi R8 sales fell 10.5% but came within five units of the 911. Mercedes-Benz sold 45 SL-Class hardtop convertibles; total BMW 6-Series sales hit 33. Low 911 totals didn't stop Porsche Canada from celebrating in September. More Porsches were sold in the first nine months than in all of 2011, record-setting year that it was. But 75% of the Porsches sold in September were Cayenne SUVs.

Historical monthly and yearly sales results for 282 different vehicles can be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or, for non-mobile users, near the top right of this page. Click any model from the tables below to go directly to its specific sales results page.

After the jump you'll find detailed September and year-to-date sales info for a large number of coupes, roadsters, and general sporting derivatives. The Audi A5 and BMW 1-Series are listed in this luxury cars post, as is the whole Lexus IS range. The whole Fiat 500 range, including the 500C shown below, is displayed in this small cars post, where you'll also find the Mini Cooper family. Via the Gran Coupe, BMW's 6-Series is also linked with large luxury cars. The two accompanying charts rank cars by volume rather than listing alphabetically; click any of them for a larger view.

Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we don't know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above.

September 2012 Minivan Sales And Truck Sales In Canada

2012 Mazda 5 copper red mica side angle
Canadians have registered 77,004 minivans in the first three quarters of 2012. That's up 2.1% from 75,400 in the first three quarters of 2011. But that rise is in large part due to the introduction of the Chevrolet Orlando, a seven-seater which only went on sale at the end of last year's third quarter. Excluding the Orlando, Canadian minivan sales fell to 72,417 from 75,317, a 3.9% decline.

The Orlando and its two rivals from Mazda and Kia account for 16.9% of all minivans sold or leased in Canada. Chevrolet's version of the mini-minivan concept leads the segment, albeit narrowly. Mazda's more conventional sliding-doors-and-all take on the mini-minivan idea is 271 sales back; the Kia Rondo is another 205 sales behind the Mazda.

In the United States, Chevrolet doesn't sell the Orlando and Kia gave up on the Rondo. The Mazda 5 is responsible for just 2.3% of all U.S. minivan sales. And though one might believe that the greater attention paid to the mini-minivan category in Canada would limit the best seller's lead, it doesn't. While the market share owned by the best-selling Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country in the U.S. (where mini-minivans are ignored) stands at 45.8% this year, the same two vans own 59.4% of the Canadian minivan market. The Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey, strong sellers in America, suffer under the Grand Caravan's rule in Canada.

Canada truck sales chart September 2012
Pickup Truck Sales Chart
227,172 pickup trucks were sold in Canada between January and September 2012. Import brands, with their five representatives, were responsible for 8.5% of all truck sales in the first three quarters of 2012. In the U.S., where import brands sell six truck nameplates, Honda, Nissan, Suzuki, and Toyota were responsible for 17.7% of all truck sales during the same period. Moreover, in the U.S., 16 truck nameplates accounted for 13% of all new vehicle sales in the first three quarters of 2012. But 15 truck nameplates accounted for 17.4% of all new vehicle sales in Canada during the same period.

Contrary to popular belief, it appears as though Canadians like trucks more. Added to that point, Canadians also like Detroit's trucks more than Americans do.

September 2012 Large Luxury Car Sales And Large Luxury SUV Sales In Canada

Cadillac Escalade 22-inch 7-spoke wheels machine finished
BMW's 7-Series scored a win over the usually victorious Mercedes-Benz S-Class (and its CL-Class coupe sibling) in September 2012. The 7-Series sedan has been joined by a four-door version of the 6-Series, the Gran Coupe. The 6-Series will continue to be listed alongside more overtly sporting cars elsewhere on GoodCarBadCar.net.

Also rare was the Lexus LS460's ability to outsell the Jaguar XJ. Lexus did not sell any LS hybrids in September. Five have been sold in the first three quarters of 2012. The XJ was the only car in the category to suffer from declining year-over-year volume in September. The XJ, LS, and S-Class are all down on year-to-date terms, as well.

Also in September 2012, Mercedes-Benz's GL-Class, along with its unrelated and very rare G-Class partner, outsold the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX56, Land Rover Range Rover, and Lincoln Navigator combined. This is with GL (and G-Wagen) sales falling. In fact, sales of all three Escalade variants also slid on a year-over-year basis. So did sales of the dearly departing Range Rover and the aging Lincoln Navigator.

For the second consecutive month, BMW X1 sales declined on a year-over-year basis. September's 50% slide was harsh, but the X1 remains BMW Canada's best-selling X model this year. Sales of the X5 and X6 are down slightly this year. The X3 posted a 61% increase in September and is up 7.5% through the first three quarters of 2012.

In September 2012, the X3 outsold all its direct rivals from Acura, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo. Among premium brand SUVs and crossovers, only the Lexus RX sold more frequently. 64 of the 711 RXs sold last month were RX450h hybrids.

On a much smaller scale, September was Porsche Canada's month. In the first three quarters of 2012 Porsche generated more Canadian sales than the company managed in the whole of 2011, and 2011 had been Porsche Canada's highest-volume year in history. The Cayenne is obviously a big part of that. 74% of the Porsches sold in Canada in September were Cayennes. 52% of the Porsches sold in Canada so far this year have been Cayennes. 44 of the 219 Cayennes sold last month were diesels. And the Cayenne ranked 20th among luxury vehicles in September, ahead of the Acura TL, Audi A5, and Lexus IS.
