Audi more than doubled U.S. Q7 sales in February 2013. Porsche sold an extra 516 Cayennes compared with February 2012, a 79% improvement. Volkswagen Touareg volume grew by 113 units. Combined, the Q7, Cayenne, and Touareg sold 2929 copies. In an uneventful month for the Acura MDX, it outsold the VW Group trio by 20 copies. The BMW X5 outsold the trio by 1002 units.
Viewed another way, however, the three big Germans from Volkswagen outsold the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Infiniti JX, and Land Rover's LR2, LR4, Range Rover, and Evoque combined.
The Cayenne is much more important to Porsche than the Touareg is to Volkswagen; more important than the Q7 is to Audi, as well. It's also the best-selling single member of the trio. 42% of the Porsches sold in the United States in February were Cayennes. The Touareg, admittedly Volkswagen's most expensive model and presumably a rather profitable one, accounts for less than 3% of Volkswagen brand sales. 6% of VW Group U.S. sales in February came from one of these three SUVs.
And Lexus sold 6938 RX350s and RX450h crossovers in February 2013.
For the first time, GoodCarBadCar is including the Buick Enclave with this group of "midsize" luxury SUVs and crossovers. The Enclave is priced from $36,945, some $8000 north of the segment-leading mainstream Ford Explorer and about $3000 below the segment-leading premium Lexus RX. So GCBC gives you the opportunity to see the Enclave compared both here and there.
It may be a stretch to say the Enclave is a rival of the Mercedes-Benz ML and BMW X5. No, it is a stretch. But we're not suggesting the Volvo XC70 is a Porsche Cayenne alternative, either. Or that the Lexus RX compares as easily with the BMW X1 as it does with the Acura MDX. We've also added the A4 Allroad - combined sales of the Allroad and A4 appear in the luxury car sales chart. To subdivide the luxury SUV/CUV category any further would only make comparisons difficult.
Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for every one of these vehicles can be accessed by clicking a model name in the sortable tables below or by making a selection at GCBC's Sales Stats page. Non-mobile users can also use the dropdown menu near the top right of this page. GoodCarBadCar published a list of February 2013's 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers on the first of the month. Larger and/or more costly luxury SUVs were profiled last week.
