Following a trend which saw Ford and Ram report record Canadian truck sales in 2012, the pickup truck market continued to grow in Canada in February 2013. Even as the overall auto industry reported a 3.3% decrease in overall volume, 1.1% more pickup trucks were sold in February. 

More importantly, this increase occurred in spite of the decrease in the number of available truck nameplates. The Ford Ranger was Canada's sixth-best-selling pickup in February 2012, but it has been wiped off the North American radar by its parent company. Chrysler also stopped selling the Dodge Dakota, although only four were sold at this time last year. Although in their current form they're not yet extinct, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon contributed way less to the truck market's total output this year than last, as well.

In conjunction with this disappearance of Detroit's small trucks, sales of Japanese brand pickups declined in February, as well. From the Toyota Tundra's 8.4% slide to the Nissan Frontier's 32.1% drop, all five Japanese brand trucks sold less often in February 2013 than in February 2012.

Through all of this, sales of full-size American brand trucks improved significantly last month, so much so that the truck market's total volume grew. February 2013 Ford F-Series volume grew by 691 units. The Ram Pickup was up by 298 units. Combined, the four full-size General Motors trucks recorded a 519-unit increase. The increases generated by GM's main set of twins - the Sierra and Silverado - weren't enough to conquer Ram, however, which on its own outsold the GM twins by a scant 44 units.

The majority of America's top-selling trucks posted significant year-over-year increases in February 2013. Sales of the best-selling Ford F-Series are on pace to make 2013 the best year since 2006. The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are being helped by attractive purchase incentives. The Toyota Tacoma is making hay now that challengers are disappearing like Mafia turncoats.

Americans registered 162,755 new pickup trucks in February 2013. 89.1% were full-size trucks, including 191 Cadillac Escalade EXTs and 2263 Chevrolet Avalanches. Of the remaining 17,807 trucks sold, 71% were Toyota Tacomas.

An Increasingly Large Number Of Buyers Are Scooping
Up Chevrolet Avalanches Before It's Too Late

America's truck market features a quickly shrinking number of nameplates to choose from. Ford Ranger? Dead. Mazda B-Series? Forgotten. Dodge Dakota? She gone. Suzuki Equator? We don't have January numbers yet, but small they will be.

This leaves 13 different pickup trucks available in the pickup-friendly United States. Two of those trucks are dying a slow death: the Chevrolet Avalanche (up 20% in January) and Cadillac Escalade EXT (up 59%) are undeserving of their sentences.

At the top of the heap in January sat, as usual, the Ford F-Series. Sales of America's best-selling vehicle jumped 22% to 46,841, but the F-Series was outsold by GM's twins - the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra - by 1450 units.

2012 Year End Top 15 Best-Selling Trucks In Canada

17.3% of the new vehicles sold in Canada in 2012 were pickup trucks. Of those 290,481 trucks, 36.6% were Ford F-Series pickups, 29.4% were GM trucks of one kind or another, 23.8% were Ram Pickups, and 8.9% were Japanese brand trucks. Of the 25,843 Japanese brand trucks which were sold in Canada in the twelve months of 2012, only 41.6% were full-size Tundras and Titans. 

Canada's pickup truck market declined by 2% in 2012, but one must remember that the loss of nearly 6000 units came about even as two vehicles entered extinction, contributing 13,967 fewer sales, and two small GM twins went on hiatus and were thus responsible for 2269 fewer sales. Set just the Ranger and Dakota aside and you'll find that the market for Canada's remaining 13 trucks grew 3% in 2012.

For the first time ever, one nameplate found more than 100,000 Canadian buyers in a calendar year. Ford F-Series sales rose 10.4% to 106,358 in 2012. Keep in mind, Canada's overall new vehicle market grew 5.7%, so the gains generated by the F-Series, Ram, and Toyota Tacoma - the best-selling small truck - were significant. The improved sales of the F-Series, 10,033 extra units, was better than the total volume achieved by Suzuki and Land Rover combined.

In other words, the Ford F-Series was the best-selling truck in Canada in 2012. Combined, the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado twins outsold the (Dodge) Ram Pickup by 9400 units. In 2011, the General Motors twins outsold the Ram by 22,906. Sales of the twins slid 9.8% in 2012. This wasn't unexpected given the soon-coming nature of their replacements. Moreover, Sierra sales were coming off a major league high in 2011, so the decline doesn't pull GMC back below the totals achieved between 2004-2009.

Toyota has never sold this many Tacomas in a single year in Canada. Toyota Tundra sales are down 37% from 2007's high. Nissan Canada didn't sell as many Titans in 2009 and 2010 combined as they did in 2012. And though Ridgeline sales are up year-over-year, 2012 was still the second-worst year on record for the unibody Honda.

Canadians acquired just 19,493 pickup trucks in December 2012, down 20% from 24,604 in December 2011. Three of Canada's four best-selling trucks posted serious year-over-year declines, leading to a loss of 3546 units, and that's before we consider the impact of Ford's now defunct Ranger.

Ford sold 1006 Rangers in December 2011 but not a single one in December 2012, the first such month since Ford announced the end of North American Ranger sales. Ram, by which we mean Dodge, didn't report a single Dakota sale, but we've become accustomed to the missing Ram sibling. The loss of 1006 Ranger sales weren't made up by the F-Series, not this month. F-Series sales dropped 11.6%.

Of course, Ford set records with its full year F-Series sales. In 2012, Ford sold more than 100,000 F-Series pickups for the first time ever. In fact, this was the first time any nameplate has ever sold on more than 100,000 occasions in Canada. It helps that Ford has seemingly millions of different F-Series variants.
