Minivan Sales And Muscle Cars In Canada - September 2010

In the more price-sensitive Canadian market, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro doesn't appear likely to challenge the on-sale-now 2011 Ford Mustang for muscle car sales supremacy. Unlike in the United States, where the Camaro seems to have locked up the title for 2010's best-selling muscle car/pony car with an apparently insurmountable lead, Canadian buyers spread their love to the less-expensive Ford. The 2011 Ford Mustang has a base price of $22,999. The 2011 Chevrolet Camaro has a base price of $26,995. The 2010 Dodge Challenger, by the way, currently starts at $25,995.

It happens to be The Good Car Guy's opinion that, in this segment at least, the least-expensive model is also the most appealing. The same can't be necessarily be said of maximinivans. The Dodge Grand Caravan is.... alright. What you really want, however, is a 2011 Toyota Sienna, the Swagger Wagon. In Canada, the Sienna and just-coming-on-stream 2011 Honda Odyssey will be fighting for second place for the foreseeable future. Grand Caravan sales, even without the Chrysler Town & Country, were still 4232 units strong in September. As it stood at the end of September 2010, the Toyota Sienna was leading the outgoing Honda Odyssey model by about 1800 sales.

In the mostly-separate Mazda 5 vs Kia Rondo sales battle, the Mazda (which also happens to be ahead of the Honda Odyssey year-to-date) leads the Rondo by over 500 sales through the end of September.

Minivan Sales And Muscle Car Sales In Canada - August 2010

The Kia Rondo's struggles in the United States that Kia's given up on their miniature minivan in the American market. But minivan market share in Canada leans favourably in the Kia Rondo's direction. Through eight months of 2010, the Kia Rondo is only 321 unites behind the Mazda 5, but the trend line is sliding toward Kia. The Rondo beat the 5 in July after coming close in June and being slaughtered in May. It'll be a fight to the finish.

Further up the minivan scale, the Dodge Grand Caravan (and slow-selling Chrysler Town & Country) nearly out-sell all other minivans combined. If the Chrysler/Dodge duo's sales hadn't slid 23.1%, the two would have carved out a slice greater than half the pie. Both the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna posted huge improvements over August 2009's totals.

In the more exciting but less conspicuous muscle car segment, the Ford Mustang laid a beatdown on the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger in Canada in August 2010. Now that the 2011 Ford Mustang is fully on-stream at Ford Canada's dealerships, the Camaro has a much tougher fight on its hands. Chevrolet sold 44 fewer Camaros in Canada last month than in the same period of 2009; Ford Mustang sales jumped 17.2%. The Chevrolet Corvette and Dodge's Viper and Challenger all posted gains in August, as well.

MINIVAN SALES AND MUSCLE CAR SALES IN CANADA - JULY 2010

For the vast majority of automakers, victory isn't everything. Being able to say, "We sold the most _____", doesn't feel quite as good as making trunkloads of money. Don't worry your pretty little head off - Dodge will forever be inclined to proclaim the Grand Caravan as Canada's best-selling minivan. But take into consideration the percentage of 2010 Dodge Grand Caravans which were sold to fleets (likely at no profit to Chrysler) and the rest which went to regular consumers with around $7,000 in incentives, and you begin to see Honda's contentedness.

See, every time Honda sold an Odyssey in Canada in July 2010, Chrysler/Dodge sold five minivans and 65% of the sixth van was out the door. But while the base price of a Dodge Grand Caravan had plummeted to $20,945, the $31,690 Odyssey wasn't likely much cheaper than $26,000.

You might also be interested to know about a few minivan competitors not in this Graph because, well, they ain't minivans. Toyota Venza sales were 1,045 in July. 464 units of the Ford Flex were sold in Canada in July. Dodge Journey sales reached 2,268.

As for muscle car sales in Canada, only the best-selling 2011 Ford Mustang posted a decline in sales compared with July 2009. Camaro sales shot up 49%; Mustang sales fell from 898 to 880.

MINIVAN SALES AND MUSCLE CAR SALES IN CANADA - JUNE 2010

honda odyssey
There are tens of thousands of casual auto industry observers (and experienced automotive critics, too) who are under the strong impression that price is not part of a vehicle buyer's decision making. They're completely right.... at least when discussing certain vehicle segments. Price is irrelevant to the buyer who can't decide between the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Lamborghini Gallardo. Price may only be partially relevant to the loyal Michigander whose truck lease is about to expire. But when it comes to the buyers of minivans in the great nation of Canada, price matters.

Chrysler sells minivans with two different names in Canada. First, there's the slow-selling Chrysler Town & Country, just 449 sales in June. It's at least the Dodge Grand Caravan's equal in the States, but the Grand Caravan is Canada's favourite. Combined, their June 2010 sales were worth more than half of the minivan pie. As of this moment, Dodge.ca lists the Grand Caravan's base price at $20,945. Few would argue that the Honda Odyssey isn't the better van, but Odysseys start at $31,690. The Odyssey was Canada's fifth-best-selling minivan in June 2010. The four which sold more all have a lower base price.

Muscle cars tell a slightly different story. Only slightly. Now that the 2011 Ford Mustang is on stream, its fast and cheap V6 versions are attracting consumers faster than Chapmans Li'l Treats on a hot summer's day. It doesn't hurt that the Mustang 5.0 GT is a fair deal, too. Or that the Chevrolet Camaro costs more.

CANADIAN SALES OF MINIVANS AND MUSCLE CARS - MAY 2010

mazda 5
Minivans and muscle cars, the bane and dream of the every man. You're the rational man, but a man whose image must be beautifully garnished. So the Dodge Grand Caravan sits in your driveway with a 2011 Ford Mustang GT 5.0. Or perhaps it's a Mazda 5 with a Dodge Challenger, or a Toyota Sienna with a Chevrolet Camaro.

Who'm I kidding? This is a Sales Stats post, a place for realists; not dreamers. For convenience, Graphs are being combined over the summer months because The Good Car Guy needs to play more frisbee and spend more time at the beach. Forgiveness, please.

Keep in mind, these sales figures for minivans and muscle cars like the Camaro and Mustang reach all the way back to May. (Data was late arriving. Forgiveness. Please.) The impact of Swagger Wagon ads may not have been fully felt. On the other hand, Canadians love to buy automotive products a size below their American counterparts, so the Mazda 5's success shouldn't surprise. Ford's newly-found wild popularity in Canada gels nicely with the Mustang's huge lead over the Chevrolet Camaro, too. Year-to-date, however, the Camaro was out in front by 274 units as of May 31st.

AMERICAN MUSCLE CAR SALES IN CANADA - APRIL 2010

dodge challenger
Although the stage has been set for Chevrolet Camaro domination in this category for months now, April's Canadian Sales Stats revealed that the Dodge Challenger didn't get along with the set designers. Perhaps incentives helped, perhaps it's Canada's fondness for Chrysler products, perhaps potential Mustang owners are waiting for an influx of hi-po 2011 Ford Mustangs. Whatever it is, the Dodge Challenger sold better than both the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang in April.

Indeed, Ford Mustang sales were down from 641 last April. The Camaro, of course, was brand new to the market last year at this time. Dodge Viper sales, for what it's worth, fell 83.3%. Back at Chevrolet, sales of the Corvette were up nearly 50% from April of 2009.
