Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese SUVs In Canada - November 2010

The Subaru Forester surged forward from 686 sales in October 2010 to nearly overtake the Honda CR-V with 955 November sales. There were 25 selling days in November: Subaru sold 38 Foresters per day. In October, there were 25 selling days, as well. Subaru sold 27 Foresters per day. With somewhere around 90 Subaru dealers in Canada, each dealer was able to sell about 10 Foresters in November, on average, a pleasing two or three car jump from October levels. Toyota has nearly that many dealers in Ontario alone. Of course, Toyota dealers have the privilege of selling popular vehicles other than the RAV4 - the Highlander being a good example - while Subaru dealers must fend for themselves off the Outback, Legacy, Impreza, and... ahem... Tribeca. But it's interesting to see what Subaru Canada can do with a relative handful of dealers.

Of course, Mitsubishi dealers were able to sell about 22 Outlanders each, on average, in November 2010. Charging headlong into a North American trend which says the Outlander shouldn't be successful, Mitsubishi Canada found 872 buyers in November. The attractive Outlander found just 888 buyers in the United States last month, that's in a market which is more than seven times the size of Canada's.

The 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander starts at $25,498 in Canada and $21,995 in the USA. That Canadian base price is $903 more than the starting MSRP of the 2011 Toyota RAV4. Perhaps worthy of remembering is the tremendously successful Hyundai Santa Fe, another Asian vehicle which normally goes unmentioned in this group of Japanese best-selling utility vehicles. Hyundai sold 2231 Santa Fes in November. (Kia sold 1236 Sorentos.) The 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe has a base price of $22,999.

Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese SUVs In America - November 2010

Two of these vehicles were in The Good 12 Supersize last year. The problem they face is the lack of a supersized version of The Good 12 this year, there are only 12 spots for all vehicles, not the 24 total from last year. Subaru Forester, Toyota 4Runner: apologies in advance for your dismissal.

There was no doubt when the 2010 Toyota 4Runner was released that it was going to be a renewed hit. The dramatic 140.5% increase in November 2010 is no surprise. The 4Runner has actually slipped in the context of the most popular Japanese SUVs in America, but sales are way up from last November and should be able to remain steady for some time. The Toyota Highlander also possesses renewed vigor, handing the Honda Pilot its lunch. Take note of the 2011 Nissan Juke not on this list - Juke sales in November were 3373, up from 2103 in its first month on sale, October.

These are the ten most popular Japanese SUVs and crossovers in America from November 2010.

Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese SUVs In Canada - October 2010

There's a theory going around, mostly correct, that says the Canadian automotive market is more price-sensitive than the U.S. automotive market. Rather than being turned on by the car, the theory says, Canadians are turned on by the financing deal. Among a group of decent automobiles, the vehicle with the best financing arrangement garners the sale. This theory makes complete sense in almost every analysis of Canadian auto sales, but when looking at sales of Japanese utility vehicles, it falls apart just a little bit.

Have a look at the Honda Pilot. Now look at its luxury-oriented partner, the Acura MDX. True, MDX sales plummeted in October 2010, but only compared with a massively extraordinary October 2009. Pilot sales dipped only a bit but were still 201 units behind the MDX's total.

Now consider the Toyota Highlander. You don't even see it on this chart, but its 225 sales pale in comparison to the 659 put up by its luxury-oriented partner, the Lexus RX. The 2011 Lexus RX350 has a base price of $47,050; the 2011 Toyota Highlander has a base price of $31,500. The 2011 Acura MDX has a base price of $52,690; the 2011 Honda Pilot has a base price of $34,820. Is this a blemish on the price-sensitivity theory or representative of the fact that Canadians simply prefer the 2011 Ford Edge to the Pilot and Highlander but don't prefer the 2011 Lincoln MKX to the RX and MDX?

Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese SUVs In America - October 2010

The most popular Japanese SUVs in America in October 2010 were all more successful this year than last. Sales increases ranged from a relatively low 2.2% gain for the Nissan Murano to the 1161.5% improvement put up by the Toyota 4Runner, a Good 12 Supersize winner. Five of the vehicles in the list below also made it into the more prestigious Top 10 Best-Selling SUVs In America group, the Honda Pilot wasn't far from it.

Officially, The Good Car Guy isn't a fan of the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Lexus RX350, or Honda Pilot, but that wouldn't stop GoodCarBadCar.net from declining to extinguish these vehicles from the Marketplace, a rare decline indeed. Sure, the CR-V and Lexus are dull. The Rogue is awkward and the Pilot is ugly, but none of these vehicles are trademark bad. Any CR-V buyer should take a longer look at the boxy Honda Element, even as Rogue buyers should consider the smaller 2011 Nissan Juke; RX350 customers should be squeezed into an Audi Q5; and Honda Pilot buyers should examine a Toyota 4Runner. If people are still intent on the CR-V, Rogue, RX, and Pilot, so be it. Perhaps they're a bit dull, too.

Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese SUVs In Canada - September 2010

Light trucks, an official category in which all vehicles mentioned below fall, has made up 53.9% of the Canadian new vehicle market so far this year. Import nameplates, a category in which all vehicles mentioned below fall, has made up 53.7% of the Canadian new vehicle market so far this year. Contrast these numbers with passenger cars (46.1%) and General Motors/Ford Motor Company/Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep (46.3%). Now you're seeing part of the why and how sales of SUVs and crossovers like the ones below have risen sharply in 2010.

Mazda Tribute sales in 2010 are up 8.9%. Honda Pilot sales are up 19.3% through the first nine months of 2010. Mazda CX-7 sales dipped by four units in September but are up 48.7% on the year. Acura MDX sales rose 11.8% in September 2010. Subaru Forester sales are on the level. Nissan Rogue sales jumped 60% in September. Sales of the 2010 Honda CR-V are up 43.3% through the first three quarters of 2010. Only the Toyota RAV4 (up in September), Mitsubishi Outlander, and Lexus RX have failed to match last year's totals.

One interesting final note before you examine the list of Canada's best-selling Japanese SUVs. Canada's 2010 Mazda Tribute out-sold its U.S. counterpart by six units in September 2010 and is up by 1676 sales through the end of last month. The U.S. new vehicle market is seven-to-eight times larger than the Canadian new vehicle market. Explanation?

#10 - Mazda Tribute: 299

Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese SUVs In America - Through September 2010

There was a time when soft, car-based, "cute-utes" with limited off-road capabilities were mocked. The "SUV" label didn't apply; the term "crossover" hadn't yet been coined. Now everybody and their dog drives a soft, car-based cute-ute. Most people choose a Japanese version.

Oh, Japan can do tough and rugged as well. In fact, the 2010 Toyota 4Runner was a return to the 4Runner of old. Square-jawed and proficient in all types of 4x4ing, the new 4Runner has been attracting way more clientele than the old model. Still, if a popular and respected Japanese utility vehicle is what you're after, rugged ain't it. The Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, and Subaru Forester are cars on stilts, and all the better for it.

Here are America's Top 10 Best-Selling Japanese SUVs. Call'em CUVs or crossovers if it makes you feel better.
