The Ford C-Max outsold the Toyota Prius V by six units in Canada in February 2013. The Ford, which GoodCarBadCar reviewed a couple weeks ago, is now two sales ahead of the Prius V through two months. The V, remember, sells more frequently than the conventional Prius in Canada. Toyota Canada sold 176 Camry Hybrids in February; 352 this year.
Hybrids are doing more and more for manufacturers competing in Canada. Mainstream sedans obviously have a greater impact, volume-wise, than high-tech green cars like the Chevrolet Volt. The Malibu, which doesn't sell half as often as the class-leading Ford Fusion, sold eleven times more often than the Chevrolet Volt in February.
This isn't a mark on the Volt, nor does it say anything about the future impact of plug-in cars. But you come here to find out what has happened. And despite its intriguing electric capabilities, the Volt's high price means it hasn't been able to compete with normal sedans like the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, and Hyundai Sonata, top-selling midsize sedans which are or will soon be available in hybrid form.
Speaking of which, the class leader has built up quite a lead over its rivals early in 2013. Ford Fusion volume in Canada through February is 25% stronger than Hyundai Sonata volume.
