November 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In Canada

2013 Honda Civic interior
The Updated Interior Of Honda's 2013 Civic
Canada's new vehicle market posted a 4% improvement in November 2012, gains which could have been much greater were it not for the losses posted by some of Canada's best-selling models. Dodge's Grand Caravan fell 3.2%, or 112 units. Dodge's Ram P/U, Canada's second-best-selling vehicle, fell 2.4%, or 129 units.

And Canada's best-selling car from November 2011, still Canada's best-selling car, fell by 1756 units year-over-year. Last year at this time, Civic sales had risen 62% compared with November 2012. In other words, Honda Canada could afford a 26% drop in Civic sales. Even as Hyundai Elantra sales rose 39.5% compared with November 2011, the compact Hyundai ended the month 954 sales behind the Honda.

For the Hyundai to have overtaken the Civic, Elantra sales would have had to jump 72%. That didn't happen. And despite its 26% drop, the Honda Civic easily ended November 2012 as Canada's best-selling car while expanding its year-to-date lead to 10,528 units. Oh, and an updated 2012 model goes on sale soon.

The Kia Rondo and Chevrolet Orlando landed on Canada's list of the 20 best-selling cars for the second consecutive month. Typically, minivans are only eligible for Canada's best-selling vehicles list. But the Orlando and Rondo aren't so easily classified. If you don't want to consider the two Mazda 5 alternatives as passenger cars, the next-best-selling cars in November were the Subaru Impreza, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Dodge Dart.

Much more could be said about November 2012 new vehicle sales volume in Canada, and much will be said. GoodCarBadCar will soon post a best-selling SUV list and added to that will be a best-selling truck list, and shortly, yet more for best-selling vehicles, best-selling luxury vehicles, worst-selling vehicles, and full vehicle rankings.

Below, Canada's 20 best-selling vehicles in Canada are listed by November 2012 volume. As, always, you can access historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all these vehicles through GCBC's Sales Stats home.

November 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs In America

2013 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum Cayenne Red
America's 20 top-selling SUVs and crossovers accounted for 219,682 of America's 1.14 million new vehicle sales in November 2012. The Ford Escape trailed the leading Honda CR-V by 1363 units, but was the highest-selling of four American brand SUVs in the top five. Year-to-date, the CR-V's 15,042-unit lead over the Escape is not something that can be overcome in December, particularly if CR-V sales continue to rise and Escape sales continue to fall.

The chief newcomer on November 2012's list of the 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers in America is the Nissan Pathfinder. With 23% of its year-to-date sales coming in the eleventh month of the year, the Pathfinder nameplate owes much to the fourth-gen model that was recently introduced with more of a crossover angle.

The best Pathfinder sales year in the last decade was 2005, when 76,156 were sold. It seems unlikely that Nissan could sell 8000 Pathfinders each month now, but if it did, that 96,000 annual rate would have a hugely negative impact on the Murano, or at least one would think. Ford is doing a fine job of selling a big crossover-that-used-to-be-a-truck, the Explorer, alongside the smaller Edge and the better-selling Escape. Perhaps Nissan can do the same with the Pathfinder, smaller Murano, and better-selling Rogue.

All 265 Vehicles Ranked By U.S. November 2012 YTD Sales

12 different auto brands are represented in this month's top 20 list, although they hail from just eight different auto manufacturing entities. The Lexus RX was the only premium brand vehicle to crack the top 20, although you will soon be seeing in this month's luxury SUV sales post that Cadillac SRX sales shot up 13% to 5340 and BMW had a great month with the X5 and X3.

GoodCarBadCar makes all these sales figures readily available through the Sales Stats homepage where you can select any make, model, overarching manufacturer, or the total market. America's 20 best-selling cars have already been published along with brand-by-brand rankings and the country's five favourite trucks.

The Focus Is Now America's
Best-Selling American Brand Car
America's 20 best-selling passenger cars accounted for 326,816 of America's 1.14 million new vehicle sales in November 2012. Knocking the Toyota Camry off its normal top spot was the Honda Civic, sales of which shot up 76% in November. Presumably the result of a clear out of 2012s, the Civic's 30K month was only part of American Honda's November surge.

The Accord is also in the midst of a model changeover, and as customers clamour for the new model, others enjoy the deals they found on the outgoing midsize Honda. Accord sales jumped 83% in November 2012. Although there are some mighty big year-over-year improvements in this top 20 list, none beat the Accord's, and only its better-selling little brother comes close.

2012 was the first year since 2008 that Honda's sold more than 300,000 Accords, and the year isn't over yet. With a half-decent December, 2012 will also be the first time since '08 that Honda's sold more than 300,000 Civics to American customers. Toyota looks likely to sell 400,000 Camrys for the first time since 2008, as well.

All 265 Vehicles Ranked By U.S. November 2012 YTD Sales

That's the podium discussed. Move past the top three and you'll find two more Toyotas, including the four-pronged Prius lineup, which was ranked ninth in November. The best-selling American brand car was the sixth-ranked Ford Focus. The Focus is now 1338 sales ahead of its big brother, the Fusion, in the race to end 2012 as the best-selling Detroit-badged car. There are three Hyundai/Kia products in the top 20, three Germans, one Subaru, and one Mazda.

You can find detailed historic monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these models by selecting a make and model (or just a make, or a manufacturer, or the total market) at GCBC's Sales Stats home. GoodCarBadCar ranked more than 30 brands by November 2012 U.S. volume earlier today. America's five top trucks were posted only minutes ago, and the best-selling SUVs and crossovers are coming up.

For now, get to know these 20 cars, America's favourites in November.

Hyundai USA Reports November 2012 Sales Figures Early

2013 Hyundai Sonata SE red
Hyundai USA boss John Krafcik went on Twitter early this morning to report the automaker's U.S. November 2012 sales figures.

Hyundai sales in America rose 7.8% from 49,610 to 53,487 units in November 2012. Year-to-date, this takes Hyundai's eleven-month total up to 643,572 units, a 48,646-unit improvement over the first eleven months of 2011. That equals an 8.2% improvement.

This is newsworthy for two reasons besides the fact that at GoodCarBadCar.net, any North American automaker reporting monthly sales volume sees its numbers published here, always and forever. But Hyundai reported early this month - 35 other brands won't report until at least Monday morning.

Also, many people expected the news of Hyundai and Kia's incorrect mileage claims to hurt U.S. sales in November. While we could still see such an event, and though that factor may have been at play, the fact that sales didn't fall when news of the improper testing was fresh suggests consumers may actually understand the meaning of a one mile per gallon loss, particularly when many Hyundais and Kias still rank near the top of their class in fuel efficiency.

All 265 Vehicles Ranked By U.S. November 2012 YTD Sales

We've come to expect the U.S. gains being posted by Hyundai, GM, and Ford to fall beneath the industry's overall growth as Toyota and Honda retake market share that had briefly fallen away. The overall new vehicle market in America will likely post something like a 12.5% November improvement, some way beyond Hyundai's 7.8% jump. Edmunds says Honda sales are likely to shoot up 34% and Toyota should post a 14-18% gain.

Krafcik also stated that Sonata sales were up 13% in November 2012. Elantra sales rose 28%. That should take the brand's two most popular nameplates up to approximately 17,700 and 15,800 sales, respectively. For the midsize car, this should return the nameplate to a place where its beating 2011's pace, although just barely. Through ten months, the Sonata, America's 15th-best-selling vehicle, was down 0.4%.

Again, check this space on Monday, December 3, for constant updates of manufacturer volume in both Canada and the United States as well as U.S. best seller lists and model-by-model updates.

October 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In Canada

2013 Honda Accord burgundy
With its first 1000+ performance since August of last year, the Honda Accord surged ahead of all midsize rivals to find its place among Canada's eight best-selling cars in October 2012. The Accord hasn't been on Canada's best-selling cars list since last August, when it ranked 20th out of 20 cars. Accord sales had plunged 19% back then. Accord sales jumped 177% this October.

You'll notice another Honda nearer to the top of this month's Canadian best-selling cars post. You'll notice the Civic near or at the top every month. The best-selling Honda Civic expanded its lead over the second-ranked Hyundai Elantra to 9574 units.

Missing from this October edition are two sub-1000-unit cars, the Kia Optima and Subaru Impreza. Oddly strong performances by the Chevrolet Orlando and Kia Rondo, two cars GoodCarBadCar also lists with minivans, helped to eliminate the more conventional Optima and Impreza.

As will always be the case in the future, historic brand and corporate totals (monthly and yearly going back to 2004) are now available through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, along with results for more than 260 currently sold vehicles. That's where you'll find out that Kia last came close to 1000 Rondo sales in July 2010, when 947 were sold.

Canada's 20 best-selling cars all sold at least 1000 copies in July. The BMW 3-Series was not in that group, and it missed this month's top 20 by just six units.
