MIDSIZE LUXURY CAR SALES AND LARGE LUXURY CAR SALES IN CANADA - JUNE 2010

acura rl silver
Take a second to compare the Midsize Luxury Car Sales Graph below with the one from May. What's different? Keep looking, keep looking. Okay, you give up?

I don't blame you for not being able to spot that Acura's RL isn't a part of the June 2010 edition, but was present in May 2010's Graph. Rumours started up over the last week about the demise of Acura's RL. Acura calls it their flagship, however, and denies the rumours. Of course, this caused The Good Car Guy to point out that the RL has almost ceased to exist anyway, as evidenced by this Graph. Acura didn't sell a single RL in Canada in June. In June of 2009 Acura Canada only sold 10. Acura has only sold 22 RLs in Canada over the course of six months in 2010.

The segment we call "midsize luxury" isn't an easy one to join. The long-established Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series dominate globally at the top end. Lower down on the price scale, the Lexus ES and Acura TL are popular in North America. Even the excellent Audi A6 is all but ignored in Canada, and this from a brand with rapid sales growth and the distinct possibility of fulfilling its desire to be the planet's biggest luxury automaker sometime later this decade.

Audi came perilously close to achieving RL-status with its R8 in the Large Luxury Car segment. The 2011 Audi A8 should help Audi sales stay away from a big fat zero. But it's unlikely that Audi can catch the BMW 7-Series or Mercedes-Benz S-Class anytime in the near future. Signifiers of true financial success, the 7-Series and S-Class are like McMansions or 160GB iPods: unnecessary, but nice to have.

COMPACT LUXURY CAR SALES AND ENTRY LUXURY CAR SALES IN CANADA - JUNE 2010

The BMW 3-Series was shining bright last month, becoming Canada's 15th-best-selling car in June 2010. Mercedes-Benz made it appear as though the gap was closing in May, but BMW spread things wide open in June.

Way down the list of small/entry luxury cars is the Lexus IS. Ranked 7th in its class in June, the IS is more like the 3-Series than some of the 3-Series' other rivals in offering sedan, convertible, and high-performance versions. It doesn't seem to matter, the IS is not one of Lexus' well-known nameplates in Canada.

Nor is the HS. Far more attractive to hybrid-conscious Americans, the HS250h appeals to Canadians about as much as a winter vacation in northern Russia. If you want a good compact luxury car, look at any of the other offerings which entice with a better blend of efficiency, power, and looks. Other than the Lexus HS, which wasn't on sale last year, and the Volvo C30, which increased June sales by 1 unit, every compact luxury car on sale posted declining sales in June 2010.

MIDSIZE CAR SALES AND LARGE CAR SALES IN CANADA - JUNE 2010

vw passat 2010
25% of Canada's Top 20 Best-Selling Cars from June are in the Graphs below. It was recently pointed out that 65% of Canada's favourite cars were of the small variety. The differences between the Canadian and U.S. markets are striking.

Still, there are some very favoured cars shown below. The Ford Fusion approximately three buyers for every ten who go to an F-Series pickup. That's sayin' somethin'. By the way, Camry and Venza sales are joined, but in Canada it was the Venza which stole the show in June, beating the Camry's 1,048 units by 14.

Then are those vehicles which attract consumers on very rare occasions. Mitsubishi's Galant is all but forgotten, almost Diamante-esque in its forgettability. For whatever reason, and it's actually fairly hard to come up with one, the Suzuki Kizashi still can't find any driveways other than the ones leading toward Suzuki showrooms. and the Volkswagen Passat? Well, it's time for the New Midsize Sedan.

Large sedans can still do okay in Canada, but it's a rare breed. The Chevrolet Impala is priced to sell. Dodge Charger sales were stronger tha the Chrysler 300's by 48 units. Ford Taurus sales dove a bit from April to May but are back into the swing of things now. Large cars certainly aren't at the forefront of the Canadian buyer's mind right now, but you can't escape the fact that many large cars are more appealing than they were when Canadians were actually buying them ten or twenty or thirty years ago.

COMPACT CAR SALES AND SUBCOMPACT CAR SALES IN CANADA - JUNE 2010

subaru impreza red
65% of Canada's most popular cars can be found in the two Graphs below. Were the Kia Soul placed here instead of the Niche Car Sales chart, that number would rise to 70%. To Canadians, size doesn't matter. Value, however, is of great importance. Small cars offer the equipment we require, just enough space for a small family, and the sort of efficiency small crossover buyers can only dream of (or remember from their previous car).

Subcompact cars and compact cars aren't the halo vehicles of any automaker's fleet. In certain cases, nonetheless, the power of these cars has helped to make a brand. Take the Honda Civic, for instance. The Civic is either the most well-known Honda or the second-most well-known Honda. Five years into the eighth generation and the Civic is still Canada's best-selling car, not just in June, but in the first half of 2010.

On the other side of the coin are automobile manufacturers who know they've got to start caring about these segments but haven't actually done so. The Subaru Impreza is a fine car, Driven by The Good Car Guy and considered to be a Corolla competitor with an extra dose of fun-to-drive; excluding low-volume performance derivatives like the WRX and STi of course.

Subaru will tell you about their rapid sales growth in North America, and they're not lying. Yet Subaru finds its Impreza ranked way back in the field of compact cars thanks to a high base price - $20,995 compared to the Civic's $15,990 - and all-wheel drive can't account for $5K. Perhaps Subaru is content to remain an idiosyncratic firm, but they say they're ready for the big time. Start with a viable compact competitor and consider selling a subcompact, too. More cars on the road will mean more people seeing your cars on the road, and that'll help sell more of the expensive Outbacks and Forester XTs.

SMALL SUV SALES, MIDSIZE SUV SALES AND LARGE SUV SALES IN CANADA - JUNE 2010

honda element
Break it down like this: the Ford Escape is inexpensive, spacious, fuel-efficient (enough), powerful (enough), and well-freakin'-known. Sales are through the roof. To go along with that, sales of the very, very similar Mazda Tribute are higher in Canada (pop. 34,160,000) at 505 than they are in the United States (pop. 309,783,196) at 306 units. So tweeted.

People be lovin' the Ford Edge. Considering GM's three Lambda platform CUVs would fit comfortably into the midsection of the Midsize SUVs & Crossovers Graph (Enclave 367, Traverse 562, Acadia 460), the fact that the three couldn't combine in Canada to out-sell the Ford Edge in June is startling.

The sales volume of large SUVs may be small in Canada, but one look at the figures and it ain't hard to see how General Motors makes money. Along with the four jumbo SUVs in the Graph below, the same platform gives us sales of the Cadillac Escalade, Escalade EXT, and Chevrolet Avalanche. That's 836 sales of expensive vehicles in a small market, vehicles which aren't the most costly to build. That's before you include the not-so-dissimilar pickup trucks.

NICHE CAR SALES AND NICHE SUV AND TRUCK SALES IN CANADA - JUNE 2010

chevrolet hhr panel
SUV coupes, an oxymoronic amalgam of two primarily offbeat terms themselves, haven't exactly set the Canadian Marketplace on fire. True, BMW and Acura don't require the X6 and ZDX to be world famous. These two vehicles are built using donated architecture and sell at higher price points. Even so, BMW X6 and Acura ZDX Sales Stats are abysmal.

All GCBC Graphs point to the fact that The Good Car Guy hates localized visual inspections when used as evidence to support car sales theories, but out of the two ZDXs seen on roads near GCBC Towers, one driver didn't have enough headroom and the other was a manager at the Acura dealership. Both vehicles are members of The Bad 8 Supersize v2.0.

Every time Nissan dealers in Canada sold a Cube in June 2010, Canadian Kia dealers sold 6 Souls. Selling souls is something I strongly discourage, but the selling of Kia Souls is one reason Kia has become a serious automotive player, particularly in the value-minded market known as Canada. The advent of Scion dealers in Canada come autumn could potentially make the Cube an even rarer sight once the xB begins attracting buyers.

And what is it about the Chevrolet HHR that Canadians despise so much? The Good Car Guy's review in the Chronicle-Herald a few years ago wasn't exactly full of praise, but it's still weird to see a car posting 35-times stronger sales in the USA: 6,004-171 in June. June 2010 sales of other niche automotive products are in the charts below.

CHEVROLET vs FORD : BOWTIE vs BLUE OVAL - JUNE 2010 IN CANADA

2011 ford edge
Last month in Canada, Ford sold nearly twice as many new vehicles as Chevrolet. Chevrolet, by the way, was the second-best-selling auto brand in Canada in June. Indeed, June 2010 was an especially good month for the Blue Oval, and Ford Motor Company overall, its best month since May 2000. Through the first six months of 2010, both Ford and Chevrolet are ahead of their 2009 pace, Ford by 23,383 units and Chevrolet by 6,631. Yet Ford has clearly captured the hearts and minds of Canadian automobile consumers in almost every segment.

Ford's pony car, the iconic Mustang, was the most popular muscle car of all in June. The Ford Escape was Canada's best-selling utility vehicle. The Ford F-Series, responsible for approximately one-third of all Ford sales, is famous for being Canada's favourite truck, even delving way back into history. One look at Canada's Top 20 Best-Selling Cars list will tell you plenty about the Fusion's favoured status - it was Canada's highest-selling non-small car in June.

Of course, Chevrolet shares a lot of its glory with Buick, Cadillac, and GMC. Combined, however, General Motors was only good for 25,646 sales in June, including a few at Saturn, Hummer, and Pontiac.

SALES OF SPORTY CARS AND PREMIUM SPORTY CARS IN CANADA - JUNE 2010

hyundai genesis coupe
Hyundai Genesis Coupe sales in Canada rose 66.1% last month. June was a good month for Hyundai, there's no doubt, and the Genesis Coupe's sales jump wasn't even the most noteworthy for Hyundai Canada. Sonata sales jumped 99% from June 2009 and the Tucson posted a 154% year-over-year gain. For the purposes of the Graphs below, however, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe's wild success speaks loudly about the sort of badge required to sell halo cars. Put the Genesis Coupe's June sales (543) in context with the Nissan 370Z's year-to-date sales: through six months of 2010, Nissan has sold 574 370Zs.

Despite the availability of a V10 in BMW's 6-Series, the spectacular driveability of the Audi R8, the easy aggression of Nissan's GT-R, and the beauty of Jaguar's XK, buyers are turning to the more expensive Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG more frequently in Canada. For the second month in a row, the Gullwing-doored SLS AMG beat those other cars in Canadian sales. The SLS is new, true, but it's not hard to see the appeal of a slightly retro car with an engine that sounds like this. Hey, Mercedes-Benz Canada made sure the price came in under $200,000...... at $198,000.

MINIVAN SALES AND MUSCLE CAR SALES IN CANADA - JUNE 2010

honda odyssey
There are tens of thousands of casual auto industry observers (and experienced automotive critics, too) who are under the strong impression that price is not part of a vehicle buyer's decision making. They're completely right.... at least when discussing certain vehicle segments. Price is irrelevant to the buyer who can't decide between the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Lamborghini Gallardo. Price may only be partially relevant to the loyal Michigander whose truck lease is about to expire. But when it comes to the buyers of minivans in the great nation of Canada, price matters.

Chrysler sells minivans with two different names in Canada. First, there's the slow-selling Chrysler Town & Country, just 449 sales in June. It's at least the Dodge Grand Caravan's equal in the States, but the Grand Caravan is Canada's favourite. Combined, their June 2010 sales were worth more than half of the minivan pie. As of this moment, Dodge.ca lists the Grand Caravan's base price at $20,945. Few would argue that the Honda Odyssey isn't the better van, but Odysseys start at $31,690. The Odyssey was Canada's fifth-best-selling minivan in June 2010. The four which sold more all have a lower base price.

Muscle cars tell a slightly different story. Only slightly. Now that the 2011 Ford Mustang is on stream, its fast and cheap V6 versions are attracting consumers faster than Chapmans Li'l Treats on a hot summer's day. It doesn't hurt that the Mustang 5.0 GT is a fair deal, too. Or that the Chevrolet Camaro costs more.

MIDSIZE LUXURY SUV SALES AND LARGE LUXURY SUV SALES IN CANADA - JUNE 2010

cadillac escalade
So you're looking to start a brand new automobile manufacturer with a base in Canada, a country just north of your largest market; but a country with a healthy marketplace itself. The first thought that crosses your mind is the need for new product. How about a jumbo luxury sport-utility vehicle?

Uh... no. Sure, large SUVs have their place, but that place is hardly known as "Canada". Totalled together, June sales of every large luxury SUV competing for buyers' hearts and minds in Canada don't add up to much more than half of Canada's best-selling small luxury SUV's sales in June. The Mercedes-Benz GLK found over 700 homes in June. Large luxury SUVs found fewer than 400.

Perhaps midsize luxury SUVs would be a better place to start. Since most of the best-sellers are already built in Canada, maybe southern Ontario could turn into the midsize luxury SUV equivalent of supercar heaven, aka Modena, Italy. After all, the Canadian-built Lexus RX was more popular than the German/Egyptian/Mexican/Brazilian-built Mercedes GLK. Acura's MDX and the Lincoln MKX are finding buyers with ease, as well.

SMALL LUXURY SUV SALES IN CANADA - JUNE 2010

mercedes glk
Maybe Canadians like their small luxury utility vehicles with an added dose of butch. Perhaps we're extra keen on European luxury, not the sort that comes across the border from the States. Whatever the reason, GM's brand-spankin new Cadillac SRX is just doing alright in Canada even though Americans are scooping up SRXs like they're a limited time offer.

Canadians, however, still prefer the Mercedes-Benz GLK350 4Matic. Doubling your competitors sales isn't easy in the automotive biz, particularly when the segment is known to be fiercely competitive and fast-growing. Yet Mercedes-Benz GLK sales topped 3,000 in the first half of 2010; no other luxury SUV in the Graph below has yet reached the 1,700 sale plateau. Canadian sales of small luxury SUVs in June are below.

TOP 5 BEST-SELLING TRUCKS IN CANADA - JUNE 2010

ford heavy duty trucks
Back on top with resounding Sales Stats in June 2010, the Ford F-Series conquered Canada with a 26.8% increase over June 2009. As seen on GoodCarBadCar.net already, the Ford Escape finished the month with a dominating victory among utility vehicles while the Focus and Fusion both finished inside the top 7 among Canada's best-selling cars. Things are very, very good for Ford Canada these days. GM's trucks knocked the F-Series down a peg in May - but no longer will Ford pickups stand for such injustice.

And look who's paying a visit to Canada's best-selling trucks Graph..... it's the Toyota Tundra. GM's tiny trucks couldn't hang on for a second consecutive month; the Toyota Tacoma had a chance; the Honda Ridgeline didn't; and the Tundra squeaked through. Stuck in the middle yet again is Dodge's Ram truck. Or the Ram. Or is it Ram Truck? Whatever. The antiquated Ford Ranger fights its way on routinely with a low, low price. Then again, most of these other trucks are available with thousands and thousands of cash back in incentives.

TOP 10 BEST-SELLING SUVs IN CANADA - JUNE 2010

gmc terrain
1660 + 791 = 2451. If, as so many critics say, General Motors didn't split up their vehicles and market them under different brands but sold just as many cars and trucks, the GMC Terrain's 791 sales would lift the Chevrolet Equinox from the fifth most-popular utility vehicle in Canada to the second most-popular. A fair jump. And a fair criticism, although perhaps unfounded. Then again, has General Motors ever considered discussing this issue with the 791 Canadian buyers of GMC Terrains to find out?

Naturally, as expected, as usual, the Ford Escape was the dominant player in Canada's SUV/crossover/utility vehicle category in the month of June. SUVs ranked 2nd, 3rd, and 4th combined only beat the Escape by 18 units. These are high profile vehicles, too - Hyundai's Santa Fe, the Toyota RAV4, and Honda CR-V - but the Escape consumes the collective Canadian vehicle buyer's mind like little else.
