Canada Small Car Sales - February 2013

2013 Volkswagen Jetta Tornado Red
Canada's seven best-selling cars accounted for 16% of the auto industry's February 2013 sales volume. Those seven top-selling cars were all, in a manner of speaking, small car rivals from the compact class.

Meanwhile, Canada's seven top-selling subcompact cars, many of which feature distinctly compact-like interior dimensions, were responsible for 5% of the new vehicle market's volume in February 2013. The most popular compact, Canada's first-ranked Hyundai Elantra, outsold the most popular subcompact, Hyundai's Accent, by a three to one margin.

Small cars of a wide variety, from the Fiat 500 to the Impreza-derived Subaru XV Crosstrek, put up fairly decent numbers in small-car-loving Canada, although Cinquecento volume has fallen in two consecutive months.

In other words, Canadians can choose between a huge number of different small cars and small car types. Yet with amazing frequency, Canadians choose to drive a fairly conventional car from Hyundai, Honda, Mazda, Toyota, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, or Ford, rather than a hybrid hatchback from Toyota or a retro-styled coupe from Mini or even an itty-bitty crossover from Nissan.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these small cars can be accessed by clicking a model name in the sortable tables below or by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page. You can rank vehicles by year-to-date volume or February sales or by year-over-year change by clicking column headers in any of the lists. Click the accompanying chart for a larger view. And feel free to make suggestions on how GCBC should break down segments.

January 2013 Small Car Sales In Canada

2013 Kia Sorento red
Ideally, A Kia Rio Buyer
Eventually Buys One Of These
After crushing all rivals in December, Honda Civic volume predictably fell harshly in January 2013. The Civic was still Canada's second-best-selling small car; Canada's second-best-selling car overall. The Hyundai Elantra took top honours. Hyundai's own Accent was, unusually, Canada's second-best-selling subcompact, trailing the Kia Rio by 45 units.

Canada's subcompact segment features a great deal of parity, regardless of its consistent leaders. Assuming you see the subcompact category as GoodCarBadCar does - nine cars, ranging from the Sonic to the Prius C - then 4196 sales were completed in January 2013. The top-selling Rio grabbed fewer than one in five subcompact sales; Toyota's two slower-sellers owned 10% of the market. Mazda 2 sales fell 24%, and the 2's market share was just 6.8%. But for an eighth-place car, 6.8% market share isn't dreadful.

The bigger problem facing subcompacts is the inexpensive nature of compacts. It doesn't help that crossovers based on subcompact chassis are becoming more prevalent. Nine subcompacts accounted for 4.4% of the overall Canadian market in January. Canada's two best-selling compacts - the Elantra and Civic - were responsible for 5.7% of the market.

Are subcompacts important? Yes, they're a great way to get young, first-time buyers into the fold. A Rio buyer may turn into a Forte or Optima buyer, hopefully even a Sorento buyer. But it must be hard work, the building of small cars which earn the slimmest of profit margins and don't sell in the largest of numbers.

January's small car post has been significantly altered, just as it already was in the United States. If you have an opinion on how segments should be broken down, feel free to share your opinion by contacting me. The tables below are sortable. The accompanying chart can be clicked for a larger view. December 2012 And 2012 Year End Small Car Sales In Canada

4085 Fewer Mazda 2 Hatchbacks Were Sold In Canada In 2012 Than In 2011

More than twice as many Civics were sold by Honda Canada in December 2012 than any other vehicle, including the second-ranked Hyundai Elantra. Honda Fit sales jumped 982%, but that year-over-year change is a relatively meaningless number. Fit sales plunged 98% at this time last year from 2010 levels, when 1655 were sold.

Compared with December 2011, numerous subcompacts reported serious declines in December in 2012. From the Chevrolet Sonic to the Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent, Mazda 2, Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris, sales dropped. On a twelve-month basis, 2012 was a good year for small cars, subcompacts included.

Canada's overall new vehicle market rose 5.7% in 2012. Above-average gains were reported by the Sonic, Fiat 500, Fit, Kia Rio, growing Mini Cooper family, smart fortwo, and the Yaris, as well as bigger small cars like the Focus, Civic, Elantra, Forte, Lancer, Impreza, and Corolla.

The most serious declines (by small cars which aren't defunct) were reported by the Mazda 2 and Kia Soul. Scion's xB and xD are forging on but don't appear to have a future, and 2012's declines explain why.

As always, you can find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for these small cars and any other vehicle by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats home or by clicking the model name in the table below. Fortunately, the table below is now sortable. Click the column headers in the table to sort by December 2012 volume or 2012 year end volume or re-sort alphabetically.
