February 2013 Mini USA Sales Charts

2012 Mini Coupe
Mini USA reported a 13.6% year-over-year decline in February 2013 as sales of the company's core car models slid sharply. Countryman volume jumped 28.4%; sales of the Mini Roadster shot up 64.5% in comparison to its first month on sale, February 2012.

Through the first two months of 2013, sales of the Cooper Hardtop are down 9.2% to 3640. The Convertible has fallen 39.1% to just 298 units. Sales of the Mini Clubman are down 45.8% to 407. Mini Coupe sales are down 46.3% to 215 units - it's the lowest-volume Mini variant. Two months of selling the Roadster have brought about 346 sales, up 215% from the 110 Mini sold in February of last year. Countryman volume has risen 20.6% to 3078 units. That's 38.6% of total Mini volume.
Mini USA brand share chart February 2013
The Mini brand was worth 16.8% of BMW-Mini USA volume in February 2013, down from 19% a year ago, down from 18.2% in January.

In comparison to potential competitors, Fiat 500 sales rose 2.3% to 3302 units in February. The Beetle was integral to Volkswagen USA's growth in February as sales of the Jetta sedan fell 11.1% and Passat volume dropped 8%. Total Beetle sales hit 3696, up 184% from February of last year. 705 of the 3696 units were Beetle Convertibles, the remaining 2991 were obviously hardtops.

Mini car sales rose 10% in the first month of 2013 as total U.S. auto sales volume jumped 14%. Sales of the Cooper Hardtop, Cooper Convertible, and Countryman increased on a year-over-year basis. Clubman sales dropped 4.6%; the Coupe ws down 34%. The Clubman ended 2012 down 16% compared with 2011.

Mini accounted for 18.2% of BMW of North America LLC's total volume in January 2013, up from 16.9% in the same period of 2012. Much of the Mini brand's importance, volume-wise, stemmed from the fact that the company's best-selling model, the BMW 3-Series, fell 28% to just 4831 sales in January. At this point last year the 3-Series was worth 33.9% of BMW Group volume in America. Last month that figure fell to 23.9%, and Mini played a part in picking up some of the slack. Sales of the 1-Series, 5-Series, and 7-Series also fell, but BMW added 1165 X1 sales to the count.
Mini USa January 2013 breakdown

Mini, meanwhile, added 165 sales from the Roadster, a car that wasn't on sale at this time last year. Exclude it from the equation and Mini sales were actually up just 5.4%. Mini was America's 29th-ranked brand in January. Fiat sold 2503 cars - a 31% increase - which was enough to make the Italian brand America's 31st-ranked make. Volkswagen sold 1730 Beetle hardtops, a 25% jump, and 502 Beetle Convertibles for an overall Beetle increase of 59%, or 831 units, and a total of 2232 sales

Mini USA Sales Chart - December 2012 And 2012 Year End

2013 Mini Paceman JCW
The Mini brand accounted for 14.7% of all BMW Group USA volume in December 2012 and 19% in the full calendar year of 2012. Overall, Mini sales rose 15% in 2012 compared to 2011's 57,511 U.S. sales.

Of the 8612 extra Mini sales, 2371 occurred because of the Roadster, which wasn't on sale in 2011. The Coupe, which only found 953 in the latter stages of 2011, increased its total by 1927 units. Cooper Hardtop sales grew 4.3%, or 1211 units. And the Countryman, Mini's second-best-selling variant in America, generated an extra 4329 sales, a 25.9% increase.
Mini USA 2012 year end car sales chart
But that's 9838 extra sales, and Mini volume in the United States only grew by 8612. Blame the Convertible just a little bit. Sales of the non-Roadster Mini droptop fell by 151 units, a 3% loss. Clubman sales slid 15.7%, or 1075 units, to 5769. The Clubman is still Mini's third-best-selling variant, just as it was last year, but it only accounted for 8.7% of all Mini USA volume in 2012.

I remember listening to a conversation in which a youthful Porsche 911 fan was told by a Porsche aficionado that he, the youthful fan, should stop liking the 911 Targa. "It doesn't fit with the 911 ethos," the Porsche snob said. On paper, the aficionado was right - the Targa is a bit of a poseur's Porsche. You can have a 911 that's better drive if you purchase a basic 911 Carrera. But I've come to believe that what's written down in physics textbooks isn't always right in the automotive world.
Mini USA car sales chart December 2012
How does this relate to Mini? As an auto enthusiast and a Mini fan, I feel that I'm not supposed to like the upcoming Mini Paceman. But seeing one on the road for the first time on New Year's Eve, I do like it. A lot. And it makes the Countryman seem unnecessary and more than a little gauche. True, the JCW Paceman in the above image is a also bit over the top.

We'll be seeing Mini Paceman sales in this chart soon, but don't be surprised if it doesn't become a major player. After all, we're not supposed to like these maxi Minis.

November 2012 Mini USA Sales Chart

Mini USA sales chart November 2012 YTD
2012 Mini model lineup
Mini accounted for 14% of all BMW Group sales in America in November 2012. With just one month remaining, just under one out of every five BMW Group sales has been a Mini.

It wasn't that November 2012 was such a bad month for Mini. Year-over-year, sales rose 11%. The Mini Coupe was the brand's only model to suffer a year-over-year decrease, although it was a sharp one; a 48% drop.

BMW, however, had a stellar month. Sales of the company's two most popular models, the 3-Series and 5-Series, reported increases of 42% and 64%, respectively. The 3-Series sold more than twice as often as the whole Mini division.

Mini USA Sales Chart: January-October 2012

2013 Mini Cooper hardtop red
With just one sale to spare, Mini squeaked out a win over the Scion brand in October 2012's U.S. sales rankings. A victory for 24th spot, but a victory nonetheless, one which Mini doesn't look capable of achieving for the full calendar year. Through ten months, Scion is 7958 sales ahead of BMW's British small car division.

In 2011, Mini ended the year 8240 sales ahead of the FR-S-less Scion. In 2010, Scion beat Mini by 34 sales.

More to the point, Mini's non-Countryman cars - the Hardtop, Convertible, Clubman, Coupe, and Roadster - outsold the Fiat 500 by 333 cars in October 2012. After a dominant September for the Countryman, October sales of the biggest Mini slid 9% year-over-year. But the original BMW Mini Cooper/Cooper S/JCW Hardtop jumped 17% to 2434 units. Clubman sales also rose 16%, and with 595 units in total, accounted for 10.1% of all Minis sold in America last month. Year-to-date the Clubman accounts for just 8.9% of Mini USA volume.
Mini USA car sales chart October 2012
Click Chart For Larger View
Overall, the Mini brand was responsible for 18.2% of all BMW USA sales in October. Through ten months, Mini has found 20.4% of all BMW-Mini U.S. buyers. The Mini division outsells all individual BMW cars save for the 3-Series, 78,081 of which have been sold this year. October happened to be a very good month for the 3er - sales jumped 26% to 9729, good enough to make BMW's most popular model America's 15th-best-selling car.

As a visual aid, the above chart has been sharpened by the removal of a few months of 2012 results. You can still go back in time to see Mini USA sales figures from the first quarter or any month since by scrolling through the Mini Sales Chart section of GCBC. Mini sales are also generalized as a brand here, as Countrymans here, and as non-Countryman Coopers here.

Mini USA Sales Chart: January-October 2012

2013 Mini Countryman John Cooper Works
The Countryman had been creeping close throughout the summer, but September marked the month in which Americans registered more Countrymans than regular Cooper Hardtops.

Combined, non-Countryman Minis - the Hardtop, Convertible, Clubman, Coupe, and Roadster - accounted for the majority of Mini sales, but they clearly make up the majority of available Minis, as well. The Countryman was the best-selling Mini variant in America in September.

Regardless, Countryman sales jumped 66% in September 2012. The Coupe and Roadster weren't on sale at this time last year, but other year-over-year comparisons weren't so kind to BMW. Hardtop sales fell 5%, Clubman sales dropped 9.5%, and Convertible sales plunged 31.5%.

The Mini brand was responsible for 18.4% of all BMW-Mini sales in America in September. BMW's four X models accounted for 34% of the company's U.S. volume.

Mini USA Sales Chart: January-August 2012

2013 Mini Roadster top operation
For the first time ever, in the long history of the Mini Roadster, the two-seat softtop Mini outsold the two-seat hardtop Mini Coupe in the United States.

The Roadster's been on sale since February.

Mini's U.S. dealers sold five more Roadsters than Coupes in August 2012In the last full month of summer, Mini USA sold a total of 644 droptop Cooper Convertibles and Roadsters. Assuming Fiat USA's hardtop/convertible ratio is approximately the same as Fiat Canada's (where 24.3% of the Cinquecentos sold in August were convertibles), we can figure on around 1000 500C sales last month in what was Chrysler's best U.S. Fiat 500 sales month so far.
Mini USA sales chart January-August 2012
Overall, the news at Mini USA was a real bright spot for BMW of North America, LLC, as sales at the parent brand plunged 19.1% in August. In fact, if we exclude the new-to-America X1, a SAV which wasn't on sale a year ago, equivalent BMW sales actually dropped 21.6%. The 6-Series was the only BMW passenger car with improved year-over-year volume. The X3, X5, and X6 improved 19%, 21%, and 5.5%, respectively.

Over at Mini, however, Countryman sales jumped 219% from 642 to 2050. The Cooper/Cooper S Hardtop was up 49% to 2333. Clubman sales fell by just one unit; the Convertible was down by only 23 sales. Overall, in a market which climbed 20%, Mini sales jumped 84%. Mini was America's 27th-ranked brand, up from 30th in August 2011.

The above chart, which you can click for a larger view, breaks down Mini's U.S. sales volume by specific model. It would be nice to know the S and JCW totals, as well, but the data Mini USA does make available is fortunately much more informative than the information provided by many automakers.

In Mini's best July since BMW began selling the brand in America, six different models found 5855 buyers. 77% of those buyers opted for a Countryman or the company's best-selling Cooper/Cooper S hardtop.

2011 Mini Paceman concept
Mini accounted for 22% of BMW's total U.S.volume in July 2012. The 3-Series, down 11% year-over-year, outsold the Mini brand by 1798 units. BMW's next best-selling model, the 5-Series, trailed the Mini brand by 155 units.

Mini USA Sales Chart - January - June 2012

2013 Mini Clubvan cream
BMW's U.S. Mini division sold 5995 cars in June 2012, taking the company's year-to-date total up to 32,059 through the first half of 2012. That's 7.5% better than Mini's first-half total from 2011, but keep in mind, Mini added two new models to the fold.

Those two models - the Coupe and Roadster - found 252 and 224 buyers in June, respectively. Together, these fifth and sixth Mini versions accounted for 8% of Mini's January-June U.S. volume through six months.
Mini USA June 2012 auto sales chart
Countryman sales continue to rise, up 28% in June 2012 and 14% year-to-date. It's a good thing, as the Coupe and Roadster add little to Mini's total and Cooper/Cooper S Hardtop and Clubman/Clubman S sales are in decline. Sales of the core Mini, the Cooper Hardtop, are down 2.5% this year. The Clubman, Mini's third-best-selling model, is down 29%. The Hardtop is still responsible for seducing 46% of Mini buyers. At this point last year, the core Mini had found 15,105 buyers, or 51% of Mini's U.S. volume.

Mini USA Sales Chart - January-May 2012

2011 Mini Countryman WRC Rally Car
To go along with the 6153 Minis sold in the United States in May 2012, Americans also acquired 4003 Fiat 500s, and 3002 Volkswagen Beetles. Scion found 897 iQ buyers; smart fortwo sales jumped 43% to 703.

On the subject of Mini in particular, sales rose 6.1% in May and are up 6% through give months. Mini sold 5801 vehicles in the United States in May 2011. Mini sales reps now have two more cars to work with than they did a year ago. With a 123-unit increase from the Convertible, 66 more Countrymans, plus the 541 Coupes and Roadsters, Mini did indeed manage to post that narrow year-over-year increase. Without the Coupe and Roadster, Mini USA was down 3.3% in May and is off last year's pace by 2.5% year-to-date.

America's new car market grew 13% in the first five months of 2012. This means Mini USA's growth is not as healthy as the overall market's. BMW's own BMW brand is up 14% in 2012. At this point last year, the Mini brand accounted for 21.1% of all BMW-Mini sales in America. That figure has fallen to 19.9% in 2012 despite the addition of Coupe and Roadster Minis.

Mini's reliance on new bodystyles to supply a small amount of growth shouldn't come as a shock to auto observers who've already realized that the Fiat 500 and 500C outsold their two direct Mini rivals by 674 units in May. The 500L looks like too much of an ugly duckling for Fiat to steal more sales from Mini.

Mini USA Sales Chart - January-April 2012

2011 Mini Countryman White
With the addition of two more models, Mini USA sales are up 13.7% this year to 19,911 units through four months. April volume slid 11.1% as sales of the four cars which were available at this time last year slid, in some cases rather harshly. Mini Clubman sales were down 37% in April, for example.

Year-to-date, sales of the regular Cooper Hardtop (including the S and JCW models) are down 4%. The Convertible is down 5.1% to 1503 units. Clubman sales have plunged 25.3%. The Countryman, meanwhile, is up 13.1%.

Mini's Coupe and Roadster have combined to add 1538 sales. The Mini brand is up by 1124 sales when all models are totalled. America's overall new vehicle market was up 2% in April 2012 and has climbed 10% this year. The overall Mini brand has been responsible 19.4% of all BMW USA sales volume in the first one-third of 2012. Mini, as a whole, is up 3636 units on the 5-Series, but BMW has sold 33,701 3-Series sedans, coupes, convertibles, and wagons.
2012 Mini U.S. sales chart
As for other niche-market small cars, sales of the Volkswagen Rabbit are up 551% to 6738 so far in 2012. The Scion iQ found 3485 U.S. buyers in the first four months of this year. smart fortwo sales jumped 75% from 1734 in the first four months of 2011 to 3028 in the first four months of 2012. 12,699 Fiat 500 hardtops and convertibles have been sold. In Canada, Fiat sales results are broken down by bodystyle.

Sales figures for every model currently on sale in North America can be accessed through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page. Mini sales are divided into Countryman and non-Countryman totals as BMW Canada doesn't provide a breakdown of Hardtop, Convertible, Clubman, Coupe, and Roadster sales. Mini USA 2012 Q1 Sales Chart

2012 Mini Cooper Hardtop Red With white roof
Although U.S. sales at BMW's Mini brand slid 3.6% in March, the first quarter of 2012 has been kinder to Mini than the first quarter of 2011. Of course, Mini's had a little help from new models this year. The Coupe and Roadster have delivered 990 extra sales to Mini this year that weren't available a year ago.

2012 Mini Cooper S Countryman White Black roofMini sales, of course, have risen by more than 990 units. Sales of the regular, original Mini two-door hatch are up 5.4% so far this year. The Mini Convertible and Clubman have struggled, falling 3.5% and 19.3%, respectively, in the first three months of 2012.

Nevertheless, even in March, the Convertible was more than three times more likely than the Roadster to find a buyer in March 2012. The Roadster is the car with the lower price of entry, but it's also the car with fewer seats.

The chart below shows how much emphasis BMW continues to place on the Mini they first brought to market more than a decade ago. 48% of Mini's U.S. sales in the first quarter came from the so-called Hardtop. Of the remaining sales, 56% have occurred on the Countryman's side of the showroom. The next-best-selling model is the Clubman, which at first glance indicates that even Mini buyers require their cars to be spacious. Relatively speaking.

As a whole, Mini was responsible for 19% of BMW of North America LLC's U.S. sales volume during the first three months of 2012. BMW 3-Series sales totalled 24,698 in that time frame, the 5-Series reached 12,709 units, and the X5 was responsible for 8675 sales.

Mini USA 2011 Sales Chart

2012 Mini Coupe White with Red Stripes
Whether sales of the regular Mini have suffered because potential Cooper buyers have gravitated toward the Countryman or because of the presence of the Fiat 500 or... just because, U.S. Mini sales suffered in 2011.

Wait a second, didn't Mini report a 14.9% year-over-year increase on January 5? Yes, of course they did. But Mini accomplished that 11,687-unit increase (from 2010's 45,644) with 17,061 extra sales from models which weren't present last year. Subtracting the Countryman and Coupe from the equation, sales of Mini's regular hardtop Cooper, the Convertible, and Clubman were down 11.5%. Worst off was the Convertible, sales of which slid 29.3%. The Clubman was down 18.4%. This means the original Mini - well, not the original original, but you know what I mean - was down just 5.4%.

2011 Mini Countryman White
Nevertheless, America's new vehicle market was up 10.3% last year, meaning Mini wasn't just down from last year; they were down in a market that was up, and significantly so. It's entirely possible that at least some of the Countryman buyers were about to be Mini Cooper Clubman buyers but chose the bigger model since it became available at the right time. But it's hard to make that argument when the Countryman brought in 16,683 clients.

If those 16,683 customers were just Mini buyers who happened to choose the Countryman, buyers who would've otherwise chosen a smaller Mini if the Countryman weren't available, then the Countryman's absence would have translated to a 35.3% improvement in sales of the Hardtop, Convertible, and Clubman. Such an improvement would hardly be believable as Mini would then have been on a scarcely possible Kia-like pace, particularly implausible given that Mini sales were up just 0.9% the year before.

This is all speculation, of course. What we do know is that Mini sold fewer copies of their previously core models while selling more Countrymans and a handful of Coupes, too. The U.S. Mini sales chart below bears that out. Just click it for a larger view.

Mini USA Sales In May 2011 - The Countryman Is Necessary

2011 Mini Countryman White Profile
BMW, America's most popular luxury auto brand in May, has been selling Mini brand cars in the United States since the 2002 model year. Initially, Mini sales were much higher than BMW forecast; the German executives hadn't realized just how easily a retro British hatchback could capture attention in the U.S.A. Mini sales were then boosted by the introduction of the less practical Convertible and more practical Clubman in later years.

Then, just a few months ago, Mini began offering the Countryman for sale, a few days before The Good Car Guy drove it. It's hard to call the Countryman an SUV, not just because that term has increasingly been replaced by relatively meaningless crossover designation, or simply CUV. Calling the Countryman a crossover or CUV is a stretch, too. But it is a 4-door Mini with overtly rugged styling and a bigger cabin. Whatever you call it, it's now hugely important to BMW's Mini brand.

That fact becomes more obvious when studying the first chart below. In May, the Countryman accounted for about three out of every ten Mini sales. That's more than the Mini Convertible and Mini Clubman combined. The second chart tells the story of the first five months of 2011 wherein Countryman sales started with a gradual ascent as supply came on stream. By May 31st, 27.3% of all new Minis in the USA were Countrymen/Countrymans.

2012 Mini Coupe White ProfileDon't go confusing the Countryman with the Honda CR-V or even the Volkswagen Tiguan. VW, for instance, sold nearly twice as many Tiguans as Mini sold Countrymen/Countrymans in May. And for every Mini Countryman sold, Honda sold 9.5 CR-Vs last month, and it was a bad month for the CR-V.

But that's beside the point. Mini doesn't introduce models intending to take over mass market segments. Anyhow, we're studying the Countryman's impact on the Mini fleet. This leads us to discover that, without the Countryman in May, Mini would've been down 3.4%. So far this year, the Countryman has helped Mini post an 18.7% improvement. But without the Countryman, Mini's year-over-year jump is just 6.3%, not nearly as healthy as the overall new vehicle market's 14% improvement.

Perhaps more stressful to BMW's Mini executives is the declining interest in the Convertible and Clubman. In 2011, sales of the Mini droptop are down 26.2% (May was even worse at -40.5%) and the stretched Mini is off 19.4% (again, May was worse at 27.5%). Fortunately, the Countryman is here and sales of the regular Cooper and Cooper S Hardtop hatch are up 25.6% through five months. Also, the 2012 Mini Coupe isn't far off. That'll further assist Mini in its quest for niche market domination over Scion and Fiat.
Mini USA Sales Chart May 2011
Mini Cooper USA Sales Chart 2011 Year To Date
Mini is now a vital part of the BMW family. In terms of overall volume, the Mini brand did more for BMW USA in May than any other product line save for the 3-Series. More than two in every ten BMW USA sales in 2011 have been Minis of one variety or another, as you'll see in the chart below. BMW sold 5604 SAVs in May, admittedly more expensive vehicles than what you see on the Mini side of the showroom. But the Mini family topped the BMW SAV family, not an easy task, regardless of their respective price points.

The BMW Group's May 2011 market share in the United States was 2.5%. By itself, Mini's market share last month was 0.55%, some way better than the 0.37% Mini owned in Canada in May. However, it's worth mentioning that the Mini Countryman has an in-showroom rival in Canada that's not present in neighbouring America: the X1. Mini found 178 Canadian Countryman buyers last month; BMW sold 298 X1s. Also, sales of the rest of Mini's fleet were down 25.3% in Canada, but the brand was up 10.2% because of the Countryman's introduction.
