Year-over-year, Canadian new vehicle sales fell 2.2% in January 2013. Keep in mind, Canadians registered 10,846 more vehicles last month than in the equivalent period of 2011, a 12.8% increase.  So while Canadian sales of the Audi Q5, for example, fell 11% compared with January 2012, Q5 volume is up 16.3% compared with January 2011 and 174% compared with January 2010.

2012 was nearly a record-setting year in Canada. Matching that level of sales in the lowest-volume month of 2013 wasn't going to be easy for some manufacturers, and that doesn't mean 2013 won't end as the higher-volume year. Rare was the luxury utility that posted a year-over-year Canadian sales improvement in January 2013. Sales of the BMW X1 fell 68%. Range Rover Evoque volume fell 31%; the Land Rover LR4 was down 43%. Audi Q7 sales dropped 36%. Lincoln's MKT and MKX slid 40% and 25%. Sales of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class slid 42%. And Volvo Canada posted a 37% decline in XC90 sales.

There were improvements, of course. The Acura RDX, BMW X3, Infiniti EX, Range Rover Sport, and Porsche Cayenne reported the most notable increases. But while premium brands landed in 18th and 19th spots among SUVs and crossovers in December, 17th and 20th in November, and 18th and 20th in October, only the Q5 finished in January's top 20.

For the third time in three years, Canadian sales of the Audi Q5 improved in Canada. After rising 58% in 2010 and 47% in 2011, Audi Q5 sales jumped 37% in 2012.

Yet even with these gains, the Q5 still wasn't quite the best-selling premium brand SUV or crossover in Canada last year. The Lexus RX outsold the Audi by nearly 1000 units last year. The Q5 outsold the next-best-selling Germans by 873 and 1135 units, respectively.

Mercedes-Benz GLK sales fell by 15 units to 5279, but that's some way off the GLK's best performance from 2010. Despite the X1's influence in BMW showrooms, Canadian X3 sales reached their highest level ever in 2012.

GoodCarBadCar.net displays the Lexus RX and Cadillac SRX with both small and midsize competitors. Distinguishing the border lines for categories like this is harder than it's ever been, so one could argue that there's no point in trying. In the case of the RX, it doesn't matter whether it's being compared with smaller, less expensive utilities or larger, more expensive utilities - it's easily Canada's favourite luxury crossover. With 742 sales, the RX450h outsold the Land Rover LR4, Lexus's own GX460, Lincoln's MKT, and the Volvo XC90. Of course, the RX nameplate benefited more from 6388 RX350 sales.

Meanwhile, the SRX is easily Cadillac's best-selling model in Canada, but Cadillac is a much smaller player here than it is in its home market of America. As a whole, the brand accounted for 0.4% of all new vehicle sales in Canada in 2012. In the U.S., Cadillac's share of the overall new vehicle market was a more tolerable 1%. Yes, four out of every thousand vehicles sold in Canada is a Cadillac, but one out of every 100 vehicles sold in America is a Cadillac. Compare that with Audi, which accounts for 1.2% of Canada's new vehicle market and 0.96% of the U.S. market.

And how has Audi become so successful in Canada; in a market which doesn't buy as many luxury vehicles? With the Q5, of course. Audi sold 4.7 times more Q5s in America in 2012, but that's in a market that's 8.6 times the size. The Q5 was Canada's favourite Audi in 2012, while in the U.S. the A4 family sold on 9859 more occasions.

The Audi Q5 has a base price of $39,900 in Canada. Another hit for the VW Group, Porsche's Cayenne, has a price which ranges from $56,600 and $166,600, excluding options. Porsche Canada sold a record number of Cayennes in 2012.

As always, you can find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for these SUVs and any other vehicle by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats home or by clicking the model name in the table below. November 2012 Small Luxury SUV Sales And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In Canada

2013 Infiniti JX35 Sangria Red
The Audi Q5 was Canada's 17th-best-selling SUV in November, three spots ahead of the Lexus RX, the only other premium brand member of Canada's top 20. Q5 sales shot up 75% to 683 units, enough to make November the Q5's best month ever. Year-to-date, the Q5 was only 101 sales behind the A4 as Audi's top-selling model, having outsold the A4 by 239 units in November 2012.

Lexus's RX, meanwhile, accounts for 47% of all the Lexus vehicles sold in Canada in the first eleven months of 2012. That's down from 50% in the same period of 2011, not because RX sales are shrinking - they're up 7% - but because the ES and GS families have kicked into a higher gear.

At BMW, 48% of the brand's Canadian volume is branded with an X, from the top-selling X3 to the X1, X5, and low-volume X6. Aside from those four models and the 3-Series, BMW's five other nameplates only account for 17% of the brand's Canadian sales.

Inside Infiniti showrooms, where the company's midsize seven-seater will soon become the QX60, the JX35 (for now) is responsible for 27% of the brand's year-to-date sales. The JX has only been on sale since April. Since its on-sale date, the Infiniti JX35 has accounted for 35% of Infiniti's volume and has outsold the next-best-selling G (soon to be the Q50 and Q60) by 286 units.

As always, you can click any model name in the tables visible after the jump to see historical monthly and yearly sales figures. Or you can select any make or model at GCBC's Sales Stats home.
