2012 Year End Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In The United Kingdom

2014 Ford Fiesta race red 5-door
The Ford Fiesta once again ended a calendar year as the best-selling car in the United Kingdom. In 2012, not only did the Fiesta post a 14% year-over-year increase in UK registrations, it overcame last year's decline to record a 6% improvement compared to 2010.

In second spot, the Vauxhall Corsa posted the second-best year-over-year increase among the ten most popular cars in the United Kingdom. The Ford Focus fell from second spot in last year's rankings to third this year; Vauxhall's Astra moved up from fifth to fourth; and the Volkswagen Golf did the opposite.

Nissan's 16% jump in Qashqai registrations was best of the bunch. The Qashqai, assembled in the north of England by workers in Sunderland, accounts for 43% of all Nissans sold in the UK.

After trailing much of the year, the BMW brand took over from Audi as the best-selling premium brand in the United Kingdom by outselling Audi by 5389 units in December 2012. The 3-Series and 1-Series obviously played the largest roles in that event. The two small BMWs are responsible for six out of every ten BMW registrations in the UK.

These were the ten most frequently registered cars in the United Kingdom in the year 2012. These ten best-selling cars combined to account for 30% of the new vehicles sold in 2012 in the United Kingdom.

The rankings of the ten most frequently registered cars in the United Kingdom were quite a bit different in December 2012 than in the prior month.

The usual best seller, Ford's Fiesta, was not the best-selling car for the second consecutive month, and in fact, dropped all the way to third spot as registrations dipped 8% compared to December of last year.

This enabled not only the Ford Focus, but Vauxhall's Astra, to overtake the Fiesta in December. Ford reported a 30% increase in Focus registrations. Year-to-date, the growth achieved by the Focus, Astra, and Volkswagen Golf was well below the industry's 5% improvement. Indeed, Golf sales dipped 2%.

GoodCarBadCar.net has also posted the 2012 year end best-selling cars list for the United Kingdom. Many of these cars remain, but the most British among them does not.

2013's The Good 12 - BMW 328i - $35,000-$40,000

BMW 328i
Until the F31-generation 3-Series Touring arrives and shows us what rooflines were meant to be, the 3-Series sedan does a fine job of showing us what a luxury car ought to be.

The Good 12 2013 logoBMW is still benefiting from its long cultivation of the 3-Series brand. You can have at least this much horsepower and at least this much equipment for substantially less money in just about any 3-Series rival. Yet the 3-Series remains the more desirable car.

It still handles wonderfully. Of course there's not the delicacy you'd enjoy in a 2002tii - get over it. And no, it doesn't steer like an E30 M3. Neither do any of the 328i's competitors.

Apparently, most buyers don't care about the 3er's dynamic decline, nor do they appear concerned about its expense. We want a mix of power and efficiency, a blend of luxury and lightness, a union between handling priorities and ride quality. The 328i provides the right brew, and does so while looking better than it has since 1991.

As for the advancement of the breed, the 328i now has as much horsepower as the E36 M3 of 1998. In fact, the 328i now has 8% more torque than that car and only weighs 9% more. The EPA city fuel economy rating has improved 35%, the highway figure is 27% better. The state of the modern sport sedan ain't so bad after all.

-----

Engine: 240 horsepower; 255 lb-ft of torque from a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder

Base USD/CAD Price: $36,500 / $39,990

City Fuel Economy: 22-23 miles per gallon

It's Not Perfect: If the market determines whether an item is priced appropriately, the 328i is perfectly priced. But to those of us who didn't pay the price, the 328i is the most expensive car of its kind with the most expensive options.

Sales Stats: The overall 3-Series range is America's best-selling premium vehicle line; Canada's too. Its best-selling competition, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, is selling better than it has in years, however.

Viable Alternatives: The Audi S4 is quick. The Volvo S60 is comfortable. There's a new Lexus IS on the way. The list goes on.

November 2012 Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In The United Kingdom

2013 Ford Focus Estate Colorado Red
Clear and bright like a winter's day in Dover Denver, Colorado, is the obvious way in which the United Kingdom's new vehicle market bears no resemblance to the North American market. The Ford Fiesta is the UK's best-selling car this year, as it was last year, but in the United States, the Fiesta is the 72nd-best-selling vehicle.

Need more evidence? Consider the fact that three of the nameplates on this list of the UK's 10 best-selling cars in November aren't even available in North America.

Ford UK also sells a three-door Fiesta but doesn't sell the ugly Fiesta sedan. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is still available as a wagon, or rather an estate, in the United Kingdom.

All of these cars can (and regularly are) purchased with diesel powerplants. And of the seven nameplates on this list which are on sale in North America, only one is sold here with a diesel engine: the Volkswagen Golf.

Of course, the Golf, sales of which rose 5% to 5165 units in November, can be had in the UK with a 168-horsepower diesel. In North America, diesel bhp tops out at 140. The Golf is America's 90th-best-selling vehicle, trailing the Mini, Fiat 500, Dodge Challenger, BMW X5, and Toyota Venza.

This list presents the 10 most popular cars in the United Kingdom from November 2012. Just as many of these cars posted huge year-over-year gains last month, the SMMT says the UK's overall market posted a 11.3% increase in November and is up 5.4% to 1.9 million sales through the first eleven months of 2012.

November 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In America

2013 Ford Focus 5-Door red
The Focus Is Now America's
Best-Selling American Brand Car
America's 20 best-selling passenger cars accounted for 326,816 of America's 1.14 million new vehicle sales in November 2012. Knocking the Toyota Camry off its normal top spot was the Honda Civic, sales of which shot up 76% in November. Presumably the result of a clear out of 2012s, the Civic's 30K month was only part of American Honda's November surge.

The Accord is also in the midst of a model changeover, and as customers clamour for the new model, others enjoy the deals they found on the outgoing midsize Honda. Accord sales jumped 83% in November 2012. Although there are some mighty big year-over-year improvements in this top 20 list, none beat the Accord's, and only its better-selling little brother comes close.

2012 was the first year since 2008 that Honda's sold more than 300,000 Accords, and the year isn't over yet. With a half-decent December, 2012 will also be the first time since '08 that Honda's sold more than 300,000 Civics to American customers. Toyota looks likely to sell 400,000 Camrys for the first time since 2008, as well.

All 265 Vehicles Ranked By U.S. November 2012 YTD Sales

That's the podium discussed. Move past the top three and you'll find two more Toyotas, including the four-pronged Prius lineup, which was ranked ninth in November. The best-selling American brand car was the sixth-ranked Ford Focus. The Focus is now 1338 sales ahead of its big brother, the Fusion, in the race to end 2012 as the best-selling Detroit-badged car. There are three Hyundai/Kia products in the top 20, three Germans, one Subaru, and one Mazda.

You can find detailed historic monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these models by selecting a make and model (or just a make, or a manufacturer, or the total market) at GCBC's Sales Stats home. GoodCarBadCar ranked more than 30 brands by November 2012 U.S. volume earlier today. America's five top trucks were posted only minutes ago, and the best-selling SUVs and crossovers are coming up.

For now, get to know these 20 cars, America's favourites in November.

October 2012 Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In The United Kingdom

2013 Volkswagen Passat Alltrack
Many Of The UK's Best-Selling Cars
Are Also Available In North America.
This Passat Alltrack, However, Is Not.
Not mentioned in the table below because of lower October 2012 UK sales results are the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Fiat 500. Respectively, they are the United Kingdom's ninth and tenth-best-selling cars through the first ten months of 2012. The C-Class trails the Volkswagen Polo by 4512 units; the Fiat 500 trails the C-Class Benz by 3212 units.

At the top of the heap sits the still-surging Ford Fiesta. The SMMT says UK new vehicle sales are up 5% this year, but Fiesta sales have risen 14.6%. Vauxhall's Corsa sales growth has also outperformed the industry with a 17.1% gain, though Corsa sales slid slightly in October 2012.

No car recorded a better year-over-year improvement last month than the Vauxhall Corsa, sales of which jumped 38.3%. Astra sales remain off last year's pace, but October still stands as a bright spot. Sales of the Nissan Qashqai were up 27.9% in October and, among industry leaders, the Qashqai's year-over-year growth through ten months is tops.

Both the Volkswagen Golf and Polo reported drops in October; both cars are down year-to-date, as well. Overall, however, the Volkswagen brand was up 11.3% in October and is up 3% this year. Ford remains the United Kingdom's best-selling brand, outselling Vauxhall by more than 47,000 sales and Volkswagen by nearly 85,000 sales, but the Blue Oval goes it alone. Volkswagen has in its fold a stable of brands, including the UK's fourth-best-selling brand, Audi. UK auto sales brand rankings for October and YTD will be published on GoodCarBadCar in the coming hours.

For now, get to know these 10 best sellers, 70% of which are available in some form on this side of the Atlantic.

October 2012 Top 30 Best-Selling Luxury Vehicles In America

2013 Audi A4 allroad volcano red
Volvo missed America's list of 30 top-selling premium vehicles by just 15 sales in October 2012. Two Volvos were present in this space as recently as August, but the XC60's 82% jump (to 1562 sales) wasn't strong enough, and the S60's 34% decline (to 1153 sales) was bad enough to keep Volvo away.

Cars like the Acura ILX, Lexus GS, Audi A5, Cadillac ATS, and Lexus CT200h all sold more often than the Volvo S60 in October 2012, yet none of those cars sold frequently enough to crack the top 30. The ATS certainly appears to have had an impact, regardless. CTS sales plunged 40% to just 2344. The XTS sold more often in October. Last month the CTS was America's 13th-best-selling luxury vehicle; in October it dropped to the 19th position.

Total ATS and CTS sales didn't measure up to last October's CTS total, either, as the totals achieved by Cadillac's two entry-level cars were 7.9% down on the CTS's 3918-unit October 2011. And October 2011 CTS sales were down 7.6% from the prior October. All that said, the ATS is just getting going, having only been on sale since the latter part of September. Cars.com lists 5767 ATS sedans in Cadillac's U.S. inventory. That's nothing compared to CTS inventory: 9871 sedans, 4468 coupes, and 571 wagons.

At least the sharp declines recorded by the CTS and Escalade were covered up by the success of the XTS and fifth-ranked SRX, America's 18th-best-selling SUV in October. Cadillac sales rose 14.5% year-over-year. Lincoln was down 15.4% as only the low-volume Navigator and MKT posted gains.

There's much more to the October edition of this best-selling luxury vehicles post than Volvo's failings and Cadillac's fratricide. BMW 3-Series sales shot up 26% in October to 9729, good enough to land the top spot in this group and the 15th position in America's best-selling cars group. Direct 3-Series rivals can be spotted in second place, tenth place, and twelfth.

In The UK, Where Audi Is The Best-Selling Premium Brand
Audi just started separating the sales figures of its A4 sedan from the A4 Allroad. For consistency's sake we'll keep them together at least until the end of the year. But you can see that 13% of the A4s sold were Allroads, and you can see all A4 Allroad sales figures here. If you want an Audi wagon, the A4-on-stilts is now your only option. Ranked twelfth with the Allroad, the A4 drops to 15th without it. Audi USA's next-best-selling automobile in October was the 18th-ranked Q5, sales of which dipped 7% year-over-year. Rivals from BMW and Mercedes-Benz both sold more frequently. The X3 moved up from 15th spot last month to 11th in October.

Removed from September's 30 best-selling luxury vehicles post were two products from Infiniti and Acura, the FX and ILX, respectively. Oh, how Japanese luxury automakers love to end a given name with the letter X. The BMW X1 and Porsche Cayenne stepped in to fill the void.

As will always be the case in the future, historic brand and corporate totals (monthly and yearly going back to 2002) are now available through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, along with results for more than 260 currently sold vehicles. That's where you'll find out that Volvo sold 38,546 S60s in 2002.

After the jump, 30 premium vehicles are ranked by October 2012 U.S. sales volume. Get to know the year-to-date data, too. We're only two months away from year-end results.

Red font indicates year-over-year declining sales
GCBC qualifies all vehicles from Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Acura, Cadillac, Audi, Infiniti, Lincoln, Volvo, Land Rover, Porsche, and Jaguar while also making exceptions for overtly premium cars like the Chevrolet Corvette, Nissan GT-R, Volkswagen Touareg, Hyundai Equus, and (reluctantly) Hyundai Genesis. Buick's lack of anything truly high-end hinders its value-priced vehicles from qualifying as premium, despite the image Buick held in a previous era. Yes, this means the B-Class is eligible because of the S-Class; the A3 because of the R8, to an extent. Unfortunately the lack of data separating vehicle trim lines from one another (F-150 XL vs F-150 Platinum, for example) means vehicles like the GMC Yukon Denali and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 aren't included. None of this should lead you to believe the Chrysler 300 and Toyota Avalon and Buick Enclave aren't luxurious, particularly as they're viable competitors for true premium players.
